What I learned is I need to use IMDbPro to find producer contact info.

    1. I’ll market to producers.

    2. Use IMDbPro to find producers’ contact info. Send letters. Make calls.

    3. Ditto.

    Hi Jeff,

Not finished with lesson twelve yet, reading everyone’s letters, but wanted to see what’s next. It’s kind of the do or die moment we’ve all been headed for. Yikes. I would love to know if you or everyone else get any hits for their script. — Liz

That’s a great idea, Liz. Since we all know each others’ projects we have a vested interest in how things go from here. Let’s share whatever success we get with script requests, reactions etc.

It’s a deal. I wonder how we could all be notified is someone posts something about what they’ve sent out, or a response. I only get notifications if someone posts to my comments.

We could always set up a private Facebook group for people in this class. That way it’s easy to keep up with everyone’s successes. Also, we could post that we are looking for readers instead of having a formal writing group.

Fantastic idea! I’m all in! Also, here’s a thought – I belong to three different screenwriting groups and we read each other pages beforehand (one group reads an entire script beforehand and then that session is devoted to that one script. In the other two meetups, we’ll read anywhere between 10-20 pages beforehand of 2-3 scripts. In all meetings, we give the writer positive notes and then constructive feedback. Each meeting runs anywhere from 2 – 2.5 hours. Is there any interest out there in starting up one for our group?

I am getting together a roster of email addresses from the people in this class who want to stay in touch. After I get all the names (I’m giving you three days to respond), I’ll send an email out with everyone’s email. No one oversees the emails sent out. Once everyone who wants to be on the list gets the first email, anyone can reply to all and notify us of what you’re up to. That way, we won’t have to wade through the forums. You can tell us what steps you’ve taken to sell your script, replies you’ve received from producers, etc., accomplishments and anything else that you feel would be helpful to share with the group.

Please list your email address as a reply to this message, if you want to be a part of the email group.

        Hi Jeff,

No, I just sent the letter today. I hope there is a way to all be in the same forum and all be notified as soon as someone posts something, instead of trying to remember to check. I know, I’m looking right now for two other notifications, not sure where I’ll find them. Hope they’re critiques of my letter. Only have one so far, but I was out of town and fell behind so I didn’t get to be first in line like you and get forty critiques. LOL

Good idea. You need a good letter, but it shouldn’t take much time. You’re almost there.

There’s a little yellow circle with a star in it above the forum for the lesson. It has to do with favorites. I also clicked that I wanted to receive emails if a reply was posted. The amount of notifying emails became maddening within just a couple of hours. I unchecked that. Thirty-eight people adds up to a lot of activity, but maybe another lesson with the purpose of posting that you sent out queries, and the responses received would work. I haven’t gotten a reply about creating something like that yet, but will probably in a few days.

What I learned doing this assignment is that the writing is only the first half of the job. The second half begins now. But I have a much better understanding of the system, and I have better tools to maneuver with.

    Mark’s Marketing Campaign

    1. I am going the route of Campaign #6: Marketing to Producers

    2. Armed with the tools that have been developed in this class like the High Concept, the Elevator Pitch, The Pitch Fest Pitch and the Query Letter, I feel confident enough to put these approaches into action.

    A. Sending out Query Letters to producers connected with my target actors and similar films.

    B. Identifying smaller producers on IMDBpro (maybe Linkedin, FB, Twitter too)

    C. Sending Queries to them

    D. Using Six Degrees of Separation to see if any of my contacts are connected to producers I want to target.

    E. Calling production companies and using the phone pitch to get script requests.

Review script, make sure it is the best it can be

Develop query email to reflect the best hook possible with a 3 line synopsis that is a hook in itself.

Send out to actors who can play lead rolls, using contact information in IMDB Pro.

Thanks you for a great class.

    Elizabeth Yanders’ Marketing Campaign

I’ve learned a great deal in this class, and thought there wasn’t much more, especially in the last class. It’s a pleasant surprise to learn there are many ways to market your script, and it’s good to have the steps and pitfalls laid out.

Marketing Campaign #6: Marketing to Producers is the most relevant after taking this class. However, there are other strategies listed in several different campaigns that could be combined with #6 and are worth a try.

I will use the things I’ve learned, written, and created in this class to aid in my campaign.

I’m cleaning up my script now. Next week I plan to send out query letters to producers. I have names, but would like to learn a little more about them, and yes their email, etc. I’m also sending a query letter to an actor’s production company.

I am entering a contest that requires second round Austin Film Festival script winners (which I am, but didn’t know it was worth much), and a contest for underrepresented female writers over forty-five. Both of these contests promise meetings with top execs and support for a year. There’s a Missouri script contest deadline coming up (odds should be good since there can’t be a whole lot of scripts based in Missouri), and since my script is based in Missouri, I’m entering that too. The winners (three winners mean my odds are even better, except horror probably takes those odds down) will go on a learning retreat and visit the place that inspired their scripts. There’s no place like a past home.

MARKETING CAMPAIGN #6: Marketing to Producers

MARKETING CAMPAIGN #1: Can’t Travel (or I don’t want to move to LA)

Strategy 14: Select Contests that Get Industry Recognition

Strategy 11: Send Out Quality Query Letters

MARKETING CAMPAIGN #2: Coming to L.A.

Strategy23: Attend a Live Pitch Fest

MARKETING CAMPAIGN #3: Getting An Agent

MARKETING CAMPAIGN #4: Promoting A Contest Win

    MARKETING CAMPAIGN #10: Attaching Actors

I wish everyone well in this class and hope to stay in touch so I can hear great things.

What I learned doing this assignment is that one must have a well written script, pitch and query letter before we embark on the next part of our journey… the marketing campaign. Having the proper tools and a thought out plan are integral.

    Plan of action:

    Marketing campaign #6

    Marketing to producers.

    I got IMDbPro.

I have already pitched my concept to a producer. A small one but it’s a start. He was intrigued and asked for my script.

I’m reviewing my script and applying the notes I’ve learned from this class. I’m going to give him the revised script ASAP.

I want to thank Hal and Cheryl for a great class and I wish you all well. If any of you want to stay in contact, my email is johnvanis@hotmail.com.

    ASSIGNMENT

    Guil’s Marketing Campaign

What I learned doing this assignment is that by starting with one campaign strategy, it feels less overwhelming. Writing a great script is hard enough, then having to figure out how to best market the script is another difficult task. By choosing one strategy, it helps to narrow down our best possibility for success.

    1. Read through the 10 Marketing Campaigns and select ONE that you’ll take action on immediately.

MARKETING CAMPAIGN #6: Marketing to Producers

    2. Taking that campaign, make a plan of action, listing the actions you’ll take.

    1) I’ll refine the query letter until it is ready to go out.

    2) I plan to get another opinion on the script to make sure that the writing is as solid as it can be whether it’s through coverage, classmates or through other connections.

    3) By going through the IMDb exercise again, I will come up with a list of ten producers to start with (not as overwhelming), small producers who work with low budget movies and produce the genre I’m working in.

    3. Tell us the first action you are going to take… and take it.

To rework my QT and Phone Pitch until I nail them.

Btw, if anyone wants to keep in touch so we can help each other out with our work, please let me know 🙂

    Stephen Maynard’s – Marketing Campaign

What I learned doing this assignment is we’re now equipped with information and tools with which to market our scripts.

I have selected Marketing Campaign #6: Marketing to Producers and Marketing Campaign #10: Attaching Actors. I will attempt to communicate via email.

I’ll refine and abbreviate my Q Letters to tailor them for email expectations. Short and sweet? Sell the High Concept HOOK. One email targeting selected actors, one targeting select producers.

I’m going to take IMDb up on their offer for one free month of access. I’ll identify producer matches and actor matches for my screenplay.

Thanks, Cheryl, thanks, Hal. You have enlightened us on another essential element for success. Another remarkably important class filled with remarkably talented people.

I love you all, each and every one of my dear mates.

    • mark Morris

Yes, Jeff I plan to do some calls once I identify some likely prodcos and producers. So far though, many of the producers who are linked to Sci-fi TV series like mine don’t have contact info listed, or its just the agent or manager or legal that’s listed.

Maybe they’re too high on the food chain and I have to get down to smaller producers who give out contact info. Still working on it. If I see a prod co phone number I’ll try the phone pitch – it’ll be a simple read of what I have written down (I guess til they throw me a curve ball and get off the script!)

What I learned: It all starts with a powerful script. One a producer wades through inside a query letter. One he/she deduces whether it has substance, whether a writer is going to be easy to work with and whether they can write in the first place. Many writers, who can write, are left groveling in the dust, unclear about marketing. That leaves them struggling until they figure it out. That in itself is a lesson. Thanks.

    Karen Crider/ Marketing Campaign

Reworked concept: A frenzied, teen struggles to fit into her tutu after doughnut-binging during Covid 19.

Logline: A teen dreams of being a ballerina, but struggles against her father’s will, a bully competitor, and a doughnut addiction that threatens to end her career before it begins.

Theme: Does the ballerina make the tutu, or does the tutu make the ballerina?

    Restructure the query letter.

My mantra: Believe in yourself, even when the writing refuses to. Keep going, until the writing backs the belief. Submit, so it does the same for producers…

Strive for excellence in writing scripts. Go over the query letter/polish it, taking in consideration the critiques received.

-Focus on the correct genre; One writer said my work seemed more like a drama, than a comedy. But I do recall Hal saying, a comedy requires a laugh a page. I thought at the time, that that seemed minimal. I do strive for more than that. I will go with the comedy genre.

    -utilize manager lists.

-Seek producers through magazines such as Variety, IMDB, online lists, manager lists, etc.

    -Seek a manager

    -Coverage;

    -Network with others.

    -Consider courses.

    -Query for managers.

-Emphasize a script that has something in common with past successes–e/g/ Dead Poet’s Society.

-Strive for a movie that is fresh and innovative, not a carbon copy of someone else’s.

-Strive for a professional looking script with correct formatting.

    -Consider contests.

-Pare down hook, premise and logline that grants a clearer focus of the script.

    -Query incessantly.

-Take advantage of places where one can market/network: Writer’s groups, social events, festivals, events,

    – Investigate markets—to see what they are buying.

-Consider the cold call—be ready to deal with the busy office worker, the indifferent-minute-of-my-time associate. Understand what it is to walk in their shoes.

-Be aware that it’s important the writer bring something to the table, even if it’s just enthusiasm for the project and a willingness to take notes and act on them.

-Make sure all my scripts are registered with the Library of Congress.

-Develop a notebook/ spreadsheet of concepts, titles, clippings, insights—a diary to refer to now and then.

    -Try to read more scripts,

    -more training.

    -attend conferences, workshops

-be prepared to pitch wherever you are.

-Submit only a well-prepared script. The best-you-can-write, script.

-Though I tend to go my own way, networking is valuable.

-Go to conferences. Take advantage of professional panels who critique scrips anonymously.

-Do your best to read journals on screenwriting.

    -Take a formatting course..

-Continue to strive for excellence, knowing that’s what it takes to produce interest.

    – Network at conferences. Share your work, Take an interest in the work of others.

    – Take part in public speaking. I’ve done this in the past with good results. The feedback’s amazing.

    -Share markets,

-Celebrate rejections, your work is at least out there. Re-write to get even. lol

-Join professional sites. Listen more than you speak. Take their advice.

-Persistence is the hallmark to excellence. When one has written for decades, to continue is like breathing.

-Keep sending out and producing more. Enjoy writing for the sake of writing. That in itself is a form of learning. More scripts will benefit from this experience. Something worth appreciating no matter where I’m at in screenwriting.

What I learned doing this assignment is, I now have a fantastic roadmap to use. It breaks each campaign down into simple sand clear strategies.

    Marketing Campaign #1: Can’t Travel

Strategy #1: Great Writing is the Key to Your Success

I will go through “Laredo” for one last rewrite. It has been seen my numerous fellow writers and now I feel, with one final polish, it’ll be worthy of a “Recommend” or “Consider,”

Strategy #14: Select Contests that Get Industry Recognition

I’ve entered Laredo into the ScreenCraft Family Screenplay Contest and will continue entering the script into several more contests looking for family scripts,

Strategy #15: Target Small Producers and Indie Producers

Using the Hollywood Creative Directory, IMDB, and other resources I will locate those producers specializing in family films, especially those about a dog.

Strategy 11: Send out Quality Query Letters

Based on what I’ve learned in these classes I feel more equipped than ever to compile attention-getting, hook-filled letters.

I learned that planning a campaign is a great way to get good results.

Since we coming into the time of year when people are getting ready for their long holiday hiatus, this is my strategy:

Use this time to make sure my pilot and pitch bible are as good as I can get them.

Get coverage, enter contests. I will rewrite according to coverage notes.

I will continue to watch all of the horror series coming out, take note of the producers and directors and try to connect to them on Linked In/Facebook.

Use IMDB and Linked in to get a network of producers and managers.

Mid-January I will start going out to both producers and managers.

Marketing previously hasn’t been the easiest thing to do and I can already feel the resistance to doing it. So it’s extremely helpful to see a “map” that I can use and develop a doable plan that, activated, can only “stretch” me. The more I realize that the victory is in the actions and the results are not up to me and I can leave them to that “Big Producer in the Sky,” the more easily I can proceed.

My first primary campaign is to focus on producers who could be looking for my (and my co-writer’s) scripts.

My secondary will most likely be to approach literary agents who are seeking new, skillful screenwriters.

My first step will be to create a list of producers.

I think the most important thing I learned from this lesson is that there is ALWAYS something I can do, always some action I can take to get my scripts “out there”.

What I learned in this assignment is that I’m grateful to the class for helping me know how to casually talk about my project to others — including how to talk to myself about it. I was encouraged to find that I had hooks and marketable components. It’s been a big confidence boost.

I’m going to stick with Strategy #1. I’m going to take what I have learned in this class and use it to rewrite my script. It seems like if I get Strategy #1 down, all the other pieces will be a lot easier.

I may follow with a respected international screenwriting contest and see how I do.

I’d love to hear how you all do with your query letters – or other strategies!! Best of luck! I hope we find a way to stay in touch!

      Hi Cara

I’m working with Screenwriting U to see if they would provide those who want to keep in touch with others, a list of those people’s emails.

I’m not sure what will come about from this request, so here’s my email: sgdexter@earthlink.net

I’m working on adding a bit of Christmas to Laredo, as you suggested. Great idea!

      Take care.

      Hi,

      Thanks,

      Liz

    Lonnie’s Marketing Campaign.

What I learned: There are many ways (10) to set a marketing plan in place. This forced me to focus on the best plan for me.

May marketing campaign is #3: Getting an agent, or, manager

Plan: To search IMBDpro, linkedin, and virtual pitchfest for manager and/or agent in my genre (s).

Step #1 – Search Virtual Pitchfest for a manager and or agent and start sending out the query letter.

With 2 scripts completed in similar genres, and 2 synopsis completed for 2 more, I feel that an agent is the way to go.

    Phyllis MacBryde – Marketing Campaign

What I learned is to elevate my marketing campaign to a professional level.

    My POA is as follows:

    1. Identify film’s target audience and test assumptions

    2. Join Facebook groups whose members may be interested in the subject of my film

    3. Build a website to use as a marketing tool

    4. Shoot and edit doc short for purposes of building an audience and gather analytics from work-in-progress screenings

    5. Add early press to my marketing assets

    6. Continue to watch/attend producer panels

    7. Network and look for paths to possible referrals

    4. What I learned from this assignment is that “marketing yourself with average writing will create a very negative reputation for you.” That warning tells me that I have to hold off from marketing for the moment and get on with Phase 3 of MSC-16. But I’ll be applying the lessons learnt in this program when the time is ripe.

    3. Notwithstanding the above, I will go for Marketing Campaign 1, Strategy 14: Select contests.

I will also go with Marketing Campaign #10, Strategy 1 – getting coverage from a coverage service.

My first action will be to research screenwriting contests and find a contest based on my needs.

These two actions will hopefully help me get feedback without prematurely burning my reputation with producers.

p.s. Good luck to you all in your new career as screenwriters!

What I learned doing this assignment is…

This lesson — and course — showed me multiple avenues to take for this aspect of the profession, which is a much more complete plan of attack than only writing query letters.

Extremely helpful course! Thank you, Croasmuns!

    1. Marketing Campaign #7: Building Your Network

    2. List of Actions:

-Contact friends with industry connections to find student or upcoming filmmakers interested in producing a short script for their sample reels (translating to a produced work credit for me)

-Reach out to those contacts for networking and interest

-Send the short script for their consideration

-If successful, include short film in portfolio

    3. First Action:

    -Revise query letters
