    Karen Crider, Maximum Interest part 1

    What I learned: The essence of this scene is to drive home the subject matter, which is doughnuts, and lead this subject into my protagonist’s life. I chose metaphor to highlight surprise, uniting a side attraction that drags in a more interesting setting. The first three pages are the grabber of any script. The place that sets the impetus for the story. I have re-written this scene numerous times, before I settled on this slant. Thanks.

    HOW TO TRAIN YOUR TUTU

    Karen Crider

    FADE IN

    EXT. TOWN OF GENOA, MINNESOTA-DAY

    Within the lakes and woods of Minnesota, reclines a town where tourist’s travel for miles, searching for a fix for their doughnut-dependent-addictions; the chocolate monkey that squats their backs,

    desperate for doughnuts: glazed, powdered, jellied; sweet to the palate, gooey to the touch –a seduction to the flesh.

    The addicts follow their doughnut-dependent-scent like a blood hound, a fox: past Cub Foods, Syd’s Antiques, and even the post office where they read the sign: Genoa, MN. 56401.

    In the early morning light, their vehicles whiz past the bleak, back alleys, the grottos of the accursed; the flop-houses of the forlorn;

    eking out their subsistence inside the deep-dank cellars of the lost; groveling in desperation; those unable to halt the need that beckons the high.

    One that becomes greater without a more powerful fix to remedy it; a withdrawal from the dregs of addiction; one that requires:

    the chills, the shakes, the pain of it all, until desperation demands they sniff out their dealer, ignoring the police who already appear waiting in line;

    they boldly enter the parking lot of, ARCHIE’S DOUGHNUT SHOP.
