What I learned doing this assignment…..set-ups and payoffs can function a little differently in that the “payoff” can continue to generate mystery, intrigue and instead of a “Closed Loop” answer of a “traditional” payoff, by using an Open Loop it will keep the reader/audience engaged and ultimately obsessed to keep watching the entire series. Changes I’ve made so far are in my Concept and Unique World. I will continue to improve and still need to work on my Summary, Characters, Episodes and Seasons. But the beauty of the process is I now have plenty of material and ideas to continually make it more intriguing.

    Phyllis Presents Non-Stop Intrigue

I found places in every section of my pitch bible to rewrite, especially the Summary, which I did a major “intrigue” revision on. The results were a sharper, punchier version of my earlier draft.

I learned from this assignment that the intrigue patterns were helpful with lines and sections of paragraphs. I would just go through and try my sentence each way until I got the best one possible. I also tried to improve set-ups and pay-offs, giving the reader information while maintaining questions or open loops. This was a difficult exercise and I’m sure I will have more revisions in the future.

My current pitch bible is overwritten in places and needs to be trimmed. I began by cutting out some fluff in the summary which spans the first season, but more cutting will be required to get the entire pitch bible down to the eight-page target. I began to read each sentence to determine if I could categorize it as meeting one of the ten ways to make it more intriguing. If not, I try to rewrite it within the ten ways or determine if it can be cut completely.

What I learned doing this assignment is that what you take out is often more important than what you put down in the first place.

What I learned from doing this assignment is I’ve found many ideas in my frame work to ad to the pitch bible. This is a work in progress I’ve opened many loops to keep intrigue for future seasons. My writing is now deliberate to not waste a sentence if it does not create interest in the big picture.

What I learned from doing this assignment is that editing feels very natural to me.

As a published author, I’ve had a lot of practice in “tweaking,” so this wasn’t the most difficult part of the class for me. (Plotting definitely was my biggest challenge.) However, I never considered all the ways to rewrite a sentence, and that was some great information. It really boils things down for me. I do feel writing is very intuitive for me, but part of that is the time I’ve taken using courses like this one to aid me in becoming a stronger writer. One of the issues I KNOW I have is “overwriting.” So I spend a lot of time stripping unnecessary words from my work. I used to be married to particular paragraphs, avoiding the cutting and slashing that my novice writing self found so traumatic and formidable. I’ve become a little desensitized, out of necessity, so now it’s just a matter of recognizing the places I can delete.

I learned from this lesson a very good method to do a rewrite. Going into a rewrite with a specific goal in mind for that rewrite leads to better results than just trying to make random improvements.

This process, which I should probably do yet another time, has really punched up my bible. At this point ist’s become a reasonably good overall picture of the series I want to create.

What I learned: Punching up the areas that were flat and removing fluff and making sure I incorporated more setups/payoffs into the Pitch Bible elevated it by giving it more intrigue and gave me ideas of how I can incorporate that intrigue into the episodes. It also gave me several new title ideas for the series.

    Marie’s Presents Non-Stop intrigue

What I learned doing this assignment is to discover places that needed intrigue in my TV Pitch Bible and to check the setups and payoff, to brainstorm replacement lines by using the intrigue pattern. It was fun and brought new ideas to my show but suddenly, I understood that my plot couldn’t feed 6 seasons and I ended up spending time rethinking the whole show. I think I elevated the story and have understood the processof writing with intrigue. I have lots of work to put my new bible together but I’ll try to go fast and forget perfection…

What I learned today…using payoffs as launchpads into new intrigue and mystery.

I went through my bible and found several places where the intrigue could be ramped up.
