    Tom’s Episode Descriptions

Ugh. This one was exhausting. I learned this time around how to start thinking about episode descriptions, and how to ultimately fill in the gaps. I’m surprised by much I struggled to fill in those blanks, but I am pretty happy with the rough draft outcome.

    Ep. 1

When a political protest turns deadly, a spark ignites that will ultimately lead to humanity’s extinction. Florida Man, a lone wolf conspiratorial theorist, is drawn to the event because of a possible false flag warning. Arriving to the event, it is already on the verge of eruption. It is like a powder keg awaiting a spark. Cultural divide. Whose lives matter? Politics in the name of God. Guns and babies. And then it happens, it goes from two sides standing off to people running for their lives. Active shooter.

Three Months Earlier: Nine people who will attend the protest come together for a support group to help people struggling with loss during the pandemic, facilitated by two post-doc students. Trying their best to make everyone feel welcome and safe, Eddie and Tiffany try to tread water in a sea of awkwardness. Desperate, to bring the group together, Tiffany tells them that they are connected in a deep and profound way.

    Ep. 2

The tragedy of the group is that they feel alone, but hope exists because they share a connection. Learning to see the strength they share in one another and by attending the group session, they begin to open up. Some share profound insight, others offer encouragement, and then there’s Florida Man, who pours himself out and just keeps on pouring.

Still struggling to see past their differences, Eddie and Tiffany help them deal with grief and sometimes discover the unique struggle each of them are experiencing. As the meeting is closing, Florida Man hears a comment that triggers a memory from this past week that feels false or forced.

    Ep. 3

“Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.” Henry David Thoreau said that, Florida Man is living it. Florida Man’s insecurities take center stage as he struggles to admit his fears, falling victim to paranoia and threatening the success of the experiment.

Florida Man’s sharp decline from one week to the next begins to shed light on the overall mental health of the group. Using Florida Man as a scapegoat for their own issues, the begins to judge him unfairly, which leads to resentment and criticism. Eddie and Tiffany struggle to reign in the group. On the verge of losing control, Angela blurts out that she almost killed herself last night, but this group gave her something to hang on for, even if for just one more day.

    Ep. 4

A cosmic bond begins to thread itself through the group. Still struggling to see their commonalities, they believe there is something connecting them to this group. Eddie takes the lead, creating some animosity in Tiffany as he helps Angela open up about her past, suicidal tendencies and her search for meaning.

Florida Man begins to trust Angela and leans on her as he begins to experience flashbacks of past abductions making him question the nature of reality. Florida Man ultimately turns his suspicions on the Janitor, an older man who has been working in the background tirelessly.

    Ep. 5

The delicate balance of the group is not about influencing them, but rather giving them the opportunity to discover their potential. Where a thought can create worlds, a whisper can destroy them. While discussing music, Eddie shares his love for the concept of nostalgia and Florida Man realizes that his worlds can inspire or turn people against one another.

After FM declares his love for rap music, Peter Cetera takes offense claiming that it shouldn’t even count as a musical genre. When the group begins to poke fun at Peter Cetera’s name, Peter goes on the defensive and threatens to leave the group. Eddie talks him off the ledge, and helps everyone to see that they are on the same side. Eddie promises Peter that if he comes back next week he’ll give him the opportunity of a lifetime.

    Ep. 6

He who tries to be everything to everyone will always come up short. Eddie and Tiffany realize that it isn’t about winning every battle with the group, but rather winning the war. To everyone’s surprise, Peter Cetera returns unable to resist the “opportunity of a lifetime” that Eddie promised. Believing that if given the opportunity he could out sing the real Peter Cetera on his worst day, he is given the opportunity to outshine the man who’s shadow he’s lived in his entire life. The real Peter Cetera enters the room as a guest of Eddie’s and they perform a duet/battle.

Tiffany becomes frustrated that Eddie did not consult with her about bringing in Peter Cetera, and Florida Man’s suspicions are reignited by the musician’s arrival. The group then learns about about the long and tense rivalry between Trish and Poe.

    Ep. 7

A group divided cannot change. As the connection between Poe and Trish is revealed, the group begins to divide taking sides and creating a stark division amongst the group. Even Poe and Tiffany begin to verbally attack one another putting the fate of the group at great risk. As the Janitor just watches silently, Florida Man starts to interrogate his motives and presence deepening the concern of Eddie and Tiffany.

Dani steps in as a mediator, bringing her past into focus with the group. Tiffany becomes deeply concerned about the ethical constitution of what they are doing, but Eddie reminds her that they are running out of time.

    Ep. 8

Eddie and Tiffany learn to tread lightly when waltzing through landmines. Becoming concerned about the potential long-term affects of their experiment, Tiffany and Eddie observe Florida Man take a turn from the worse believing that he and FM are actually the same person in two different times. Continuing to unwind, Florida Man starts connecting dots that no one else can see or understand.

FM steps up and tries to help him see that there is no way they could be the same person by sharing a personal experience and opening up about his deepest desire to be a rapper. Florida Man’s rambling takes a potentially violent turn, believing that someone is in his head and controlling his thoughts. Believing the integrity of their experiment is lost, Tiffany explains to the group that their connection is not a coincidence and they have a much deeper connection than they realize.

    Ep. 9

Eddie and Tiffany admit that pandemic support isn’t the real focus, but that they are study human connection. Feeling taken advantage of, Poe lashes out and reveals his past and his leadership position in a far left group of activists. Florida Man’s paranoia climaxes causing him to relive past abductions, and Poe finds himself starting to believe that there may actually be something to Florida Man’s conspiracy rants.

Amongst the breakdown of the group, and the lack of trust surrounding Eddie and Tiffany, the group collectively decides that this is not working and next session will be the last.

    Ep. 10

The experiment is on the verge of failure. The group is not coming together as Eddie and Tiffany had hoped. Most of the group has come to the conclusion that the meetings aren’t helping and wish to wrap it up.

As Stu is about to walk out, Florida Man has a moment of clarity and asks him a personal question causing Stu to go deep into a memory. While Florida Man makes an effort to help Stu, and pursue a path outside of his own interests, he is rewarded with an epiphany and realizes that they have been abducted and they are aboard an alien vessel right now.

    Ep. 11

Florida Man puts all the pieces together and goes from being paranoid and possibly crazy to actually be right this entire time. Explaining that he can remember his past abductions now and how they all had a common element, the group is highly suspect of Florida Man.

Demanding answers about everything, Florida Man’s animated nature becomes aggressive until finally Eddie and Tiffany admit the truth. They are in fact aliens, and they are aboard an alien ship. The rest of the group goes ballistic, but Tiffany gets their attention and explains that they are all here because Jenny and many others are going to die if they don’t learn to work together.

    Ep. 12

The group turns to Jenny, as she tries to make sense of what is happening. The gravity of the situation weighs differently on everyone, and the thought of somehow working together feels impossible, even to save Jenny. The group then starts to turn on Eddie and Tiffany, but they prove they are not lying by removing the false interior of the church basement and revealing the inside of the vessel. Tiffany explains that all their memories from week to week were manipulated and the moment they walked out of the door, they entered a trance and were eventually brought back in believing an entire week had passed.

Realizing he has been right and wishing he was wrong, Florida Man has gone from a hardened lone wolf to someone who cares about others. Trying to make sense of the situation, Florida Man finally buckles and has a nervous breakdown. Eddie and Tiffany pull back the final current revealing the full truth—he is all alone. The other members of the group fade away.

    Ep. 13

Florida Man finds himself all alone with Eddie and Tiffany. He is terrified and begs to understand why this is happening to him. The Janitor sits next to him and explains his importance in upcoming events and that he must stop a deadly act of violence, which will cascade into what ultimately leads to the extinction of mankind.

Florida Man wakes up in his bed with his memories intact on the day of the protest. Getting up, he has evolved from a man who believed that corruption was out of his control and that it was easier to blend in, to someone who is ready to put his life on the line stop an event from turning deadly. Arriving at the event, he concocts a plan to find the others, but they have no recollection of Florida Man, since they were never actually on the ship with him. Florida Man realizes though that the illusions of them were accurate representations of their personalities, so while they don’t know him, he knows them.

Ultimately, he finds a way to bring the group together and save Jenny, but the violence still erupts in a different way than it did originally. Watching from afar, Eddie, Tiffany and the Janitor are left wondering if humanity’s fate is already sealed.

    Megan’s Episode Descriptions

What I learned doing this assignment is…that it can be difficult to focus on only the A storyline when describing the episode. My inclination is to want to outline the entire episode with each of the separate storylines. Focusing on just the A storyline makes me wonder if my episodes are too light (which I don’t think they will be once the other storylines are added).

I know right now I have too much of my B and C storylines in this draft, but rather than keep revising and getting farther behind, I’m just going to post for now and move on.

    SEASON 1: WORLDS APART

    Episode 1:

When a cute boy asks painfully shy Lexie Abbott to be his biology partner, she accidentally dumps a tray of owl pellets on his lap. She runs to her favorite place in the world to hide: the school library. Her childhood best friend Betsy finds her almost immediately. Betsy’s high school experience so far hasn’t been much better; already she’s somehow made enemies with the head cheerleader. The first day of high school is tough, but for Lexie, it’s easier than home. As a middle child, Lexie is often overshadowed by her genius older sister Lily and her younger brother Scott, Mr. Popularity. Maybe if Lexie can make her mark in high school, her parents will sit up and take notice.

Day two of the hostage situation starts off a bit better when Lexie befriends quiet newcomer Cerise. She also receives a homework assignment that will unknowingly change her life: to write an email to her future self. After a tense family dinner, Lexie considers packing a bag and leaving home but instead rushes through the assignment and clicks send. Shockingly, she finds a response in her inbox the next morning.

    Episode 2:

Lexie doesn’t know what to believe: is this a joke? Could she really have just received an email from her future self? But the possibility is too good to pass up. Lexie hesitantly suggests instant messaging as she leaves for school.

At school, Lexie meets up with her friend Betsy, who has dyed her hair blue and wears a bucket hat and sunglasses in an attempt to hide from her new nemesis. Margo still finds Betsy and taunts her. Lexie meets Cerise in the library and a new friendship quickly blossoms.

Back home, Lily is digging through Lexie’s desk without permission when Lexie arrives; she slams her laptop shut in time but Lily notices the bus number date and time written on a piece of paper. She figures out that Lexie was contemplating running away. Lexie agrees to extra chords to keep Lily from telling their parents.

Via IM, Alexis reveals something only Lexie would know so Lexie finally believe her. Finally, Lexie has something that makes her special: a connection to the future.

    Episode 3:

Lexie gets caught several times throughout the school day texting Alexis, but Alexis ia such a wealth of information. She asks about her sister and brother, about college and her life in Chicago.

Lexie invites Betsy and Cerise home after school. When they arrive, Lexie finds her dad sitting on the porch extremely drunk at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Embarrassed, Lexie apologizes to the girls and tries to help her dad sober up.

Later, she texts Alexis about her dad’s drinking and receives a cryptic rely. Then she calls Cerise, but Cerise’s father answers the phone, saying Cerise can’t take calls after 9PM. Lexie also learns that Cerise mother isn’t really on a business trip; she died recently of cancer.

    Episode 4:

Lexie still frequently IMs Alexis throughout her day. Lexie mentions meeting Cerise and Alexis’s stops messaging. Lexie is waiting for Cerise before school; asks if her dad mentioned she called. Cerise opens up a little about her overprotective dad. Lexie tries to prod Cerise into admitting the truth about her mother but she doesn’t.

After school, Scott grabs Lexie as soon as she steps into the house, urging her to take a phone call pretending to be their mother. With no time to refuse, Lexie does this favor for Scott and learns that he’s been skipping his history class. When she asks Scott about it, he evades her questions.

The next day at lunch, Betsy asks Lexie why she’s so quiet; not wanting to spill her own secret about Alexis, Lexie tells Betsy what she learned about Cerise’s mother. When Cerise sits down, Betsy just blurts out the truth, causing Cerise to shut down and storm away from both of them.

    Episode 5:

It’s been radio silence for Lexie from both Alexis and Cerise; Lexie seems to lose friends more quickly than she makes them. Things at school finally seem to be looking up for Betsy, though; the girl’s varsity basketball coach saw her playing basketball during PE and asked Betsy to come to varsity basketball tryouts.

Feeling completely alone, Lexie tries turning to her sister, who is too busy studying for her second attempt at a perfect score on the SAT. Scott is spending more and more time away from home. Lexie’s dad is usually drinking and her mom is working. Finally, however, Lexie gets a response from Alexis, who reveals that Cerise will betray Lexie but doesn’t tell her how. It’s at that moment that Cerise shows up at Lexie’s door to apologize for lying and start over. Can Lexie trust her?

    Episode 6:

Cerise invited Betsy to her first art show; the only problem is that it’s the same night as Betsy’s first varsity basketball game. Lexie has to choose between her two friends; Alexis is no help, providing only cryptic details about the future of both friendships.

In the end, Lexie tries to do both, going to the art show first and then the basketball game just after half time.

Lily is also at the game. She gets a call from Dylan from the bar; Lily refuses to leave the game to get him. She passes the phone off to Lexie. He asks Lexie to pick him up even though she doesn’t have her license. Lexie rushes to his rescue; Betsy looks up from the court to see her driver leaving shortly after arriving. Cerise goes with her. Betsy’s eyes narrow.

    Episode 7:

On the walk to school, Betsy demands to know where Lexie disappeared to; not wanting to out her father, Lexie evades. Betsy is clearly hurt but still invites Lexie to her next game. Lexie is taking a different route to school. Betsy notices and asks why. Lexie tells her they’re picking up Cerise. The rest of the walk to school is tense, with Betsy trying to undermining Cerise in front of Lexie.

During Lexie’s seventh hour study hall, she gets a call from her father, who again is asking for a ride home. Lexie tries to explain she’s in school but when he says he’ll just drive home, Lexie decides she has to skip her last class of the day, even though she had promised to meet up with Betsy after school.

Lexie gets her father home and in bed safely. She messages Betsy to apologize but no answer. Then she messages Alexis. “I don’t know why you bothered.” “What do you mean?” Alexis then reveals that Dylan, their father, is dead by 2040, but she won’t tell Lexie when or how he dies.

    Episode 8:

Alexis has dropped a bomb on Lexie: their dad is dead by 2040. Alexis won’t tell Lexie much about her father’s death, but she does mention that it will be soon. Of course Lexie wants to step in and stop it but Alexis thinks it’s a bad idea; who knows what else could change if they interfere with the past?

Lexie remembers Alexis’s comment about a snowstorm and when the weather forecast predicts heavy snowfall, Lexie is determined to keep an eye on her dad. She tries to talk him out of going out but fails, so she decides to follow him.

Inexperienced in driving, let alone driving in the snow, Lexie nearly has an accident. Dylan sees her nearly t-boned and he realizes how much he’s been placing his daughter in danger just to compensate for his drinking. He takes Lexie home and promises to start going to AA.

After Lexie fills in Alexis, Alexis gets a phone call; it’s her dad. What else has Lexie changed?

    Episode 9:

Lexie forces her two friends to make a truce so she can finally share her big secret: her emails from her future self. Lexie knows Alexis is hiding more than she is saying and with her two friends’ help, she eventually discovers Alexis’s secret: that she is actually an undercover operative.

What we learned during this assignment was for the most part this seemed easier than coming up with the episode ideas because we already had most of the information fleshed out. It did reveal that some episodes are more robust than others which gives us a bit more to think about to beef up the lighter episodes.

    Episode 1

Liz and Eric have a relationship most consider “couple goals” but nobody knows they’ve been secretly swingers for over 14 years. When Liz’s best friend Michelle tells her that she’s considering swinging to help save her marriage, it puts Liz in a dilemma. Does she warn Michelle that this is probably not a good idea for a marriage already on the rocks and out her and Eric in the process or keep her mouth shut and let Michelle get hurt? Liz investigates if Michelle is going to the club they frequent. When she does show up, Liz tries to hide her and Eric but eventually, she is found out without Eric knowing.

    Episode 2

Liz agrees to show Michelle the ropes of swinging if she doesn’t tell Eric. Michelle meets another newbie couple online that she’s interested in and brings the female half to the salon for Liz’s help. Liz devises a plan to bring them to a house party for their first swinger encounter. She convinces Eric to let her go to the party alone and promises to send a video of her naughtiness. Eric is excited by this suggestion but has no idea what Liz is really up to. While Michelle’s husband is already going to town on the other women, Michelle starts getting cold feet and then vomits all over the male half of the couple. Liz gets her out of the party.

    Episode 3

Even though Michelle was embarrassed by what happened at the house party, her relationship and sex life have since improved dramatically and Liz is proud of herself for helping seemingly fix Michelle’s marriage. But, then Liz finds out that Michelle’s husband is cheating on her with the couple she hooked them up with. When a new couple enters the picture, Liz steers them away from Michelle and toward her and Eric to protect all parties from any drama. Michelle gets jealous and asks why Liz “cock blocked” her putting Liz in a dilemma as to whether or not she should tell her the truth about her husband’s extracurricular activities.

    Episode 4

Liz decides to tell Michelle about her husband, but Michelle doesn’t believe her. So, Liz launches a plan to catch him red-handed. When Liz gives Michelle the evidence, she confronts her husband but eventually buys his excuses and it’s back to their fairy tale land marriage. When Eric accidentally stumbles upon Liz’s secret plan to catch Michelle’s husband, he thinks Liz is cheating on him.

    Episode 5

When Eric confronts Liz about cheating, Liz finally comes clean about her hidden agenda to help Michelle and that she knows they are swingers. Liz feels relieved that he knows, but she conveniently leaves out the part about helping others using the hair salon as a front and how he’s even benefited from the situation. Eric freaks out at first about their lifestyle being out there, but he understands why Liz had to do it. Michelle tries to force a foursome between Liz and Eric at the club which causes a super awkward moment. Liz has to get real with Michelle and tells her that they are too close of friends to be involved sexually and she needs to stop swinging because her marriage is irreparable. Liz’s real talk crushes Michelle.

    Episode 6

Michelle, still reeling from Liz’s scathing truth bombs, attempts to seduce Eric. He refuses and immediately tells Liz. Liz and Eric have a great heart-to-heart as she has mixed emotions. She is grateful for the trust and connection she and Eric have but feels betrayed by her best friend. Liz confronts Michelle and ends up firing her from the hair salon.

    Episode 7

Liz and Eric have a huge fight after Michelle tells him that Liz has been helping other swingers this entire time. Eric is pissed about the deception but also that Liz is putting them in danger of being exposed more. Liz feels she finally has a purpose and can help people.

    Episode 8

Someone comes into the salon for Liz’s advice and she can’t refuse to help them. Liz sees social media posts from Michelle making it look like her marriage is rock solid. Eric leaves Liz.
