Hook: Fatal Attraction as a family comedy
Character Structure: Protagonist vs. Antagonist (Family vs. an AI)
-
Love the concept Lori – maybe it’s just me, but I can easily see this as a HORROR/Comedy!
-
Hi, Lori!
Like Bobby Sachar, I also like your concept and see it as a potential Horror/Comedy. Good Luck.

(WIM) Renee Brown’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure
“My scripts are the cream that rises to the top: I am an A-list screenwriter.”
What I learned with this assignment: To commit to the concept and title that excites me most.
STARCROSSED SUMMER
With a little help from a magical stone, star crossed lovers find their way back to each other after decades in a small Montana town that keeps big-hearted secrets.
Feature Drama / Dramatic Triangle
-
Concept reads well, title fits and you have a lot of visuals living in the Big Sky country. I lived outside of Missoula (Potomac) for a number of years. Great sky in summer. Looking forward to more. Enjoyed it!

-
Tina’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
My writing enables me to live an exuberantly creative and productive life in prosperity.
I’ve learned that one small decision at a time will lead me to write an incredible movie script.
ARGUS’ EYES
A teenage girl has her disfigured face reconstructed at a beauty clinic in the Black Forest, only to discover that her new face is just a mask and she is now the livestock for a blind demon who has stolen her eyes for himself.

What I learned: Taking the time to create an outline is a practical first step in writing my screenplay.
Title: THE HOME STRIP
Concept: Planning to bilk geezers out of their money two aging strippers book a tour in nursing homes, where they discover true love for the very first time.
Character Structure: Rom-Com
-
OMG, I love this concept. I assume it’s a comedy because it’s hysterical!
-
I like it, Pat. And I can identify, being over 65. Looking forward to watching it develop. This is my first Romcom. Excited about the possibilities.
-
Love the title! Concept is very interesting, looking forward to see how you play out the old strippers. Unique, especially for mature actors to play.

-
John T’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
Vision: I would like to become an industry new face known for reliable box office successes and concepts that intrigue and delight audiences the world over.
What I learned doing this assignment is that gut instinct comes in handy when deciding on a concept but that an outline affords flexibility if things change.
Title: Diversion
Concept: An FBI agent tracks an airline pilot suspected of killing young women in cities across America only to discover that he’s being tracked by the real killer.
Character Structure: Protagonist vs Antagonist.
-
CJ’s TITLE, CONCEPT, and CHARACTER STRUCTURE!
Vision: I am a confident and empowered writer who embraces challenges and changes and writes highly sought-after projects with fresh and exciting ideas. I will be produced and hired to write projects that get produced.

Character Structure: Protagonist versus Antagonist
-
Claire’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
MY VISION:
I have a fabulous career as a screenwriter working in both TV and film, and I have tremendous creative, financial, and personal success.
WHAT I LEARNED: I love the character structure breakdown. Not all stories are one character against another, and many screenwriting models assume that to be the case. I realized that both of my stories are dramatic triangles.
NOTE: I have two concepts I love and can’t decide which one to take through this class. I will take both of them (I’m retired, I have time!) unless one of them jumps out at me as my favorite. Then I would focus on that one.
Concept 1:
Title: YOU ALWAYS KILL THE ONE YOU LOVE
Genre: Horror/Thriller
The ghost of an evil psychiatrist murdered by a lesbian patient, possesses the lesbians on an isolated movie set and forces each woman to kill her own wife.
Character Structure: Dramatic Triangle
Concept 2:
Title: RESCUING LOVE
Genre: Thriller
A daring, clever lesbian CIA agent must find and rescue her fiancée who has been kidnapped and forced into heterosexual conversion therapy.
Character Structure: Dramatic Triangle

-
Viva Tomlin’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
My Vision: I will be a sought-after, trusted writer/collaborator for movies or TV series for a new Sci-Fi genre based on imaginative inspiration from spiritual and physical scientific understanding of and speculation about the reality of the universe, and our emergent Earth world.
What I learned from doing this assignment is that just committing to the Title for now, my still not sufficiently reduced Concept, and the Character Structure, was unexpectedly creative as well as giving peace of mind. I valued the description, ”Outlining is a combination of discovering parts of your story, filling in puzzle pieces, and making simple choices.” I trust that through more processes, making the choices will become simple because I know I see and think in too complex a starburst way, and It takes too long to see in steps.
Title: Emergent Earth
Concept: (Genre: Science Fiction/Drama)
Advanced beings from an older universe, together with those of this one, seek the source of the new laws of reality they think enabled their earth friend as a child to traverse time, space and universes as a result of pure yearning for friendship out among the stars, but if their lifelong friendship and at last the interest of some physicists should be betrayed, and proves not to be a confirmation of prophecies and welcome, but a test of obedience to the laws of the new universe they don’t yet know, they, the Earth and their friends face unbearable loss of nearness to all they long for. (italic is at least one part I feel I maybe should leave out of too long concept sentence)
Character Structure: Dramatic Triangle
-
Jeffrey Alan Chase’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
My vision: I will do whatever it takes to become the best screenwriter I can be – an “A” list writer who is praised for high concept ideas, great execution, a string of successful movies and is always ready to share his knowledge and do what he can to help a writer on the way up.
What I learned from doing this assignment is: How hard it is to pick my next project. I was torn between 4-5 different strong (in my mind) concepts. I threw them all at about ten friends and Shards came out way on top. I’m passionate about Shards. IT WILL be a great script.
Title: Shards
Genre: Mystery Thriller
Concept: A woman with no childhood memory is involved in a cat and mouse game with a cunning hypnotist, not knowing the man is responsible for both her amnesia and the death of her treasure hunter father.
Character Structure: Protagonist versus Antagonist
-
YAY! I look forward to watching this idea blossom into a fabulous script!
-
-
Kelly’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
Vision: I want to be an empowered writer who consistently produces salable scripts.
What I learned; I learned to select a character structure for my screenplay. Once I selected the character structure I could start visualizing what the story would be. Its’ going to be the protagonist battling against the antagonist scene after scene Until the climax. This selection gave me a sense of what’s in the movie and what is not. .
Title: Blood Moon Lake
Concept: A troubled teenager is taken to a boot camp to change her behavior but learns that the camp is run by aliens who create copies of them then kill the teens. (Contained Horror)
Protagonist Antagonist Character Structure Protagonist versus Antagonist.

Title: Ragman’s War
Concept: To prevent coal and iron police from massacring men, women, and children working a picket line, a WWI Silver Star recipient must, without detection, execute the rabid commander who violently dominates their community.
Character Structure: Protagonist versus Antagonist
-
Claudia’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
Vision: To become such an excellent writer that I know every script I write will be well received by the industry, that my scripts will sell and be produced, and I’ll live the life of my dreams. To also become so empowered that fear is to be laughed at, instead I relish and look forward to pitching, meetings and much more.
What I’ve Learned Doing This Assignment: I always thought it was important to outline, I basically would do an in depth beat sheet… but I had forgotten Terry Rossio saying that it would save us 2-5 drafts. That’s enough to make me commit to outlining for the rest of my life! Lol
Title: Clean Sweep
Concept: A germaphobe Martha Stewart wannabe must take over her family’s cleaning company while her father recuperates from a heart attack and meets the love of her life, who happens to be the world’s biggest slob.
Character Structure: Romantic Comedy
-
Looks funny and promising, Claudia. This is my first Romcom, so I’m busy researching the genre. Looking forward to seeing your Romcom develop.
-
Thanks! I look forward to seeing yours develop as well!

-
-
Pete Symons’s Title Concept and Character Structure
Vision: My life path is to tell the best stories I can and success will follow.
What I learned is just to trust the process and keep moving forward.
Title: Hearse aka Meat Wagon
Concept: Carlos is a reformed gangster who takes a night job driving a hearse—a tough job by any measure – made supernaturally challenging because the body in the back is his…
Character Structure: Protagonist v. Antagonist

-
-
[WIM] Caroline’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!

Title: Deniable
Concept: An MI6 agent on a visit to the U.S. doesn’t know who to trust when his friend’s wife is kidnapped.
Character Structure: Protagonist versus Antagonist
-
Terrie’s Title, Concept and Character Structure
What I learned from this assignment is that the Rom Com genre is right for this film. I’ll probably need some thriller elements to add suspense and heighten what the characters are going through.
Vision: I write screenplays that get turned into crowd pleasing successful films using a process that allows me to enjoy my equestrian hobby.
Title: You gotta’ be ex-ing
Concept: A US Marshall is charged with getting a conspiracy theorist into witness protection, but it’s her ex and his crazy theories are true.
Character Structure: Rom Com.
-
Teresa, this looks like it could be lots of fun! I’m looking forward to seeing it come to life.
-

-
Holli’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
My vision: I am going to do whatever it takes to write amazing, resonating, award-winning movies so I am respected in the professional writing world and can quit representing derelicts and perverts for a living.
What I learned doing this assignment is this seems like an easier way to write, and I’m still generating ideas for a title because I’m not sure everyone knows that rookies are called boots in some police departments.
Title: Designer Boot
Concept: To get her job back after being fired for letting a suspect escape, a pageant girl turned police rookie pursues the top 10 most wanted criminals, and makes a deal with number 10 to help her catch the first nine.
Character Structure: Buddy Movie
-

-
-
Hope McPherson’s title, concept, and character structure
Vision: To be a working, trusted screenwriter who supports herself by writing smart films that are produced and enjoyed, while also working on a host of paid writing assignments for other industry professionals.
What I learned from this lesson: That this script could go either way at this early point – romantic triangle or dramatic triangle. That makes the upcoming outlining lessons super important and I explore the possibilities.
Title: A NOVEL REVOLT
Concept: One week before her wedding, an author’s characters escape her book and insist on rewriting her life.
Character structure: Romantic triangle (75% sure)
-
Oh my goodness Hope! I love your concept!!! So excited to see you develop it!
-
OMG, Hope, this sounds hysterical. Looking forward to it!

-
Peter Field’s title, concept, and character structure.

Title: BLOODHUNTER
Concept: An amnesiac survivor of a mysterious cult must relive her traumatic experience following clues drawn under a hypnosis to save their next sacrificial victim, thought to be her missing child.
Character Structure: It’s a little difficult to decide at this point because this is a mystery thriller feature where the protagonist tries to puzzle out the antagonist whom she believes is her love interest, where in reality the real antagonist is revealed at the end when she finally figures out who he really is.
Choice 1: Protagonist vs Antagonist
Choice 2: Dramatic Triangle

This sounds good, Natalie. And to me it sounds like a Dramatic Triangle, the protagonist, the antagonist and the love interest. Have you taken the Thriller class? I’m writing my first thriller and finding the class useful. Looking forward to seeing this story develop.
-
Hi, Claire, thanks for your comment. Yes, I’ve taken Hal’s Thriller class, as well as few other folks’ Mystery Thriller classes. I am debating between those two because the real antagonist acts beneath the surface until the end. The love interest appears ambiguous, as we are continuosly mislead to believe that he is the antagonist, then we’re proven wrong, and so back and forth until the end. It’s complicated. :0)

MY VISION: I will make my living as a screenwriter by selling my own narrative scripts and successfully fulfilling writing assignments.
By doing this assignment, I learned to think about character relationships in a very broad way. The Character Structures are very simple and I sometimes find myself delving into details too soon. This is a nice way of seeing my characters at the 30,000 foot level.
Title: Not a Clue!
Concept: In this parody on tea cozy murder mysteries, a Poirot-like character and a Miss Marple-like character compete to prove which of them is the greatest detective only to discover that a murder has happened and that one of them is the next victim.

MY VISION: I am going to be so disciplined in the daily writing process and become such an adept writer that my successful screenplays will launch me into a full-time writing career.
What I learned from doing this assignment is the importance of claiming my title and concept. – I’m about to create the first super solid outline in my life.

Horror (Anti) Buddy Movie
Following her therapist’s advice, a woman brings an “under-the-bed monster” that doesn’t let her lead fulfilling life out into the light to learn how to live with it. But the monster has plans of its own.
-
So glad you are in this class, Valeriya! These are great concepts. I love the horror one the most because I love horror. Looking forward to seeing how your ideas develop!
-
Hi Claire! So great to see you toooooo! Watched Top Gun yesterday –– this class feels like screenwriters’ Top Gun academy! Many of us here are from MSC. More, there are three of us from Pro Series 25 I took (2008!!!!!). It’s amazing that we can follow each other’s progress on the way to success. Thank you – I’ll see where the monster takes me, I’ve never thought of writing horror, but here we are, out of the box! Let’s have fun. (by the way, I sent you an email about our movie)

Andrew Kelm’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
Vision: I am going to do whatever it takes to be a great writer of TV and movies who is sought after by people I respect within the industry and has multiple successful TV series produced.
What I learned from doing this assignment is… How my characters relate to each other. In a sense it is a love story, but one is the protagonist with the other the antagonist. And there is a third person who could be a point on a triangle, but his story is peripheral.
Title: FATEMONGER
Concept: a psychic with a blind spot for abusive men uses subtle manipulations to murder a sexual predator who seduces her to get to her sons.
Character Structure: Protagonist versus Antagonist.
-
BOB SMITH’S TITLE , CONCEPT, and CHARACTER STRUCTURE
CONCEPT SELECTION
My vision for success from this program:
“I want to be a great writer who delivers entertaining, informative, and uplifting movie scripts that sell and are produced.
What I learned from doing this assignment is…?
Clarity in ougtlining tests the viability of a concept before you write the story.
TITLE: “Angels in Gangland.”
GENRE: Gangster Comedy.
CONCEPT: A slain Cosa Nostra mobster (Lou Tasca) cannot get into the World to Come because of his life of crime. His only hope to redeem himself is to do an act of nearly impossible supreme good, namely, persuade the wiseguy who killed him (Carlo Vizzini) to quit the mob, trash his oath of silence about mob activity, surrender to the FBI and enter the Witness Protection Program.
CHARACTER STRUCTURE: Protagonist vs Antagonist.
Protagonist: The spirit of the slain mobsert (Lou Tasca), tasked to convince his killer
(fellow wiseguy Carlo Vizzini) that it is a good thing “to turn rat” and join the Witness Protection Program.
Antagonist: Mob culture, in which Carlo is stuck, and his boss, Tony Rizzo, is ready to
kill Carlo whom he suspects of insanity (with his ghost story of Lou’s viaitations) and “turning rat.”
-
Love this concept, Robert! Imagining one gangster haunting another sounds hysterical! Good luck with it!
-
Thank you so very much, Bobby. Really appreciate the encouragement.
Bobby Smith
-
-
Great concept, Robert! Makes me think of MARRIED TO THE MOB – tons of opportunity for absurdity here!
-
loved the pitch in toastmasters today glad to see you are in the class.

Kristin’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
REX APPEAL: Comedy — The true story of a small-town paleontologist who sues the government after the feds seize his T. rex, the largest in the world.
Protagonist vs. Antagonist
VISION: “I want the personal, professional, and financial freedom and joy that come from writing so well that I’m in demand, selling beyond my wildest dreams, and making worthy projects—on a big scale and with my active, collegial participation.”
WHAT I LEARNED doing this assignment is that it’s weird to “say it out loud.” I had no idea if Hal or anyone was reading what we were sending in for Module 1, but it’s a very different thing to post this publicly. This story has been in my life for years (I co-wrote the book that was the source material for a documentary)…and taking the story to this other level has been on my wish list. My mission is to make it something fun instead of tragic (although it was tragic)—and to experience it in a new way, after time has passed. This moment is exciting and scary!
-
Linda Anderson’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
Vision for your success from this program:
Audiences around the world view and love my meaningful screenplays—one of the most satisfying and energizing accomplishments of my life.
What I learned from doing this assignment is I didn’t know there was a Buddy Movie character structure. It’s perfect for my movie.
Title: Ticket to Live
Concept: An ex-cop with PTSD and an abandoned dog with BIG issues team up to bring light into their darkest places—based on a New York Times bestselling memoir.
Character Structure: Buddy Movie with Two Characters Owning the Story
-
Tracy’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure
I will do whatever it takes to become a successful author and screenwriter with several successful books published and movies produced.
I am really good at creating an outline that turns into an amazing story!
Title: Revolutionary Anna
Concept: A woman bringing supplies to her husband at Valley Forge agrees to carry an urgent message for General Washington. Now an assassin is hunting her, trying to get the message back.
I’ve chosen the Protagonist v. Antagonist structure.
What I learned doing this assignment is that a powerful title doesn’t have to say everything about the story.
-
Oooooooo! I like the sound of this, Tracy. Looking forward to watching this come to life.
-
-
David Scott Smith’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
MY VISION: I am going to do whatever it takes for me to become a legend in both the filmmaking community and popular movie culture, so much so that audiences will stand in lines around the block to see my movies the way I did for Star Wars, ET and Raiders, and I will be buried with the 5 Academy awards given my work, and a tombstone that reads, “Awesome as fuck!”
What I learned from doing this assignment is: That I’m excited to learn more about character structure!
Title: Connect the Dots
Concept: The true story of the only man in the military who believed in a signals intercept trainee and helped her expose the largest network of Soviet spies ever uncovered – ultimately answering the question, “Who really brought down the Soviet Union?”
I’ve chosen the Dramatic Triangle character structure.
-
This sounds good, David. Looking forward to seeing how it unfolds.
-
-
Title: VISION: To sell my script or limited series with future spin-offs to a great producer.
Jamie’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
Title: WITHOUT RECOURSE – A True Story
Concept: With no recourse to sue, two women battle with the FDA and AMA when one has a life threatening medical condition and her doctor and attorney are part of the medical mafia.
Character Structure: Protagonist versus Antagonist
What I’ve learned: Deciding the character structure I’m not real sure of. I am going to lead with Protagonist versus Antagonist but, I think this will change to a Dramatic Triangle at some point, even at this stage. I am allowing myself to explore the options right here, right now.
-
Tom’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
Title: ONCE ISN’T ENOUGH
Concept: What if when a man’s friend is killed during a war, but when the wizard father restores his son to life, he claims it was the man who killed him.
Vision: “When I discuss my script with producers, my vision is I come up with excellent alternatives quickly.”
Doing this assignment, I learned by using this method I save many hours of fretting.
Character Structure: Dramatic Triangle

Concept reads well, title fits and you have a lot of visuals living in the Big Sky country. I lived outside of Missoula (Potomac) for a number of years. Great sky in summer. Looking forward to more. Enjoyed it!

Aaron’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
VISION FOR SUCCESS: By the end of this class I will have written a script that is ready for the market and will be a calling card for the type of writing I am capable of producing.
What I learned from doing this assignment is that by picking out the character structure, I am designing the major conflict of the story at a very high level.
TITLE: BLACK JESUS
CONCEPT: A black tow truck driver gets out on probation after being setup by a dirty Sheriff and begins to expose years of corruption and racist murders committed by the lawman, things he will kill to keep hidden.
CHARACTER STRUCTURE: Protagonist vs. Antagonist
-
Subject Line: Jill Clifford’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
My Vision: I am going to become skillful enough as a screenwriter that I can to get my scripts into the hands of producers, and ultimately get one or more into a produced feature film.
What I learned from doing this assignment is that there are a lot of different character structures for movies. In this case, although there are many people involved in this story, including a love interest, it is a protagonist versus an antagonist character structure – it boils down to one good man versus one evil man, with some support from others, both good and bad.
Title: Illegal Rescue
Concept: An undercover INS agent’s life depends on the help from the same illegal immigrants he was planning to deport.
Genre: Thriller
Character Structure: Protagonist Versus Antagonist
-
· Kevin Ash’s Title Concept and Character Structure!
· Vision: I will be living in paradise, writing prolifically at my leisure, respected and sought after for my interesting and thought provoking films.
· What I learned from doing this assignment is I don’t think these structures fit my film, but I will try to fit it into one.
· Title: Design Your Mind
· Concept: The true story of my cousin’s son who battled addiction for years and won, inspiring all those around him, only to tragically die just when it all comes together.
· Character Structure: Protagonist vs. Antagonist
-
Kevin – sounds great, and I LOVE the title. In terms of the wording of the concept, be careful though: because it’s a true story, that can short-circuit the process of designing a truly compelling High Concept! Can you get more specific about the protagonist (think of him as “fictional” for a bit) – how old? What KIND of a kid? What were his dreams? Why did he turn to … alcohol? You’ve given a great CATEGORY for this kind of story. Get more specific, if you can?

Paul Mahoney’s Title, Concept and Character Structure!
Vision: My vision for this program is to become a successful writer who writes full time. I am going to achieve a successful writing career that enables me to constantly learn and brings myself and Solange joy, fun, fulfilment, health, happiness, inspiration, awards, a very good income & an attitude of gratitude.

-
Michelle Damis’ Title, Concept and Character Structure.
VISION: I will be a prolific writer that is sought out because of my ability to truly touch people and create memorable stories and I will have financial freedom and time with my family as I travel the world.
What I learned from doing this assignment…that I’m sooo ready to write this one!
TITLE: Chelsea Handler: It’s all your fault. (aka Mom Hangover)
Genre: Comedy
High Concept: When a famous
comedian cancels her show last minute, two middle-aged sisters find
themselves having a wild night they’ll never forget.
Major Story Hook: Would your mom
survive a “say yes to everything” night?<div>CHARACTER STRUCTURE: Mostly Protagonist /Antagonist with a dash of Buddy because they are twins/sisters.
</div>
-
Marianne’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
Vision: To empower myself to smile at today’s writing challenge and have fun solving it. Why? Because that’s how I’ll craft screenplays industry insiders are itching to read and produce. That’s how I’ll get my movies made.
What I learned doing this assignment… How to have both siblings own the story. And just take this one step at a time.
Title: Ticking Time Capsule
Concept: Feuding twins must team up to honor their terminally ill father’s wish — finding the family’s treasured time capsule — before his time ends
Character Structure: Buddy Movie
-
Lauren’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!

Title: PHOBIA SHMOBIA
Concept: A therapist who’s dismissive of her patients has her device for eradicating fears malfunction leaving her paralyzed by everyone’s phobias.
Character Structure: Protagonist versus Antagonist
-
Lauren, this is fabulous. It could work well as a comedy or drama, but from your title, I’d say this is a comedy. Love the title, by the way. Looking forward to seeing it unfold.
-
-
Teresa Rodriguez’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
– MY VISION: I will become a highly respected and influential writer/producer with my own successful production company that I can leave as a blessing to my children and many generations.

– Character Structure: Dramatic Triangle
-
Susan Arnout Smith’s spectacular vision: I co-create with God projects that are produced, win awards, heal hearts and bring me financial abundance and time to explore the world with family and friends.

Fantasy/Adventure
Concept: A young girl is spirited off-planet after an ancient curse reveals she will cause the destruction of her world, not knowing that her being off-planet is what creates her world’s end.
-
Interesting! Looking forward to learning more about this!

Subject Line: Veleka’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
My work is respected and produced, and I am rewarded with success and great wealth.
Bill Martell talks about Intentional Lead Characters, and I’m very interested in learning what Hal will share about how to do this.
Veleka’s Title and Concept to claim ownership of it:
Madhouse Manor
“A retired psychiatrist, scammed out of his life savings, is forced to hide this from his wife and move her into a former asylum owned by his family, only to discover ancestor ghosts in the attic who demand therapy, or they will haunt the hospital.”
Veleka’s Character Structure: Ensemble Cast (since I already have the actors for this project cast)
-
Jack P’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure
VISION: I will do whatever it takes to write a produced script that is recognized by the industry and leads to multiple successful movies.
WHAT I LEARNED FROM THIS ASSIGNMENT: That my script will be a Rom-Com with the two lead characters owning the story.
TITLE: Waiting on a Friend

CHARACTER STRUCTURE: Rom-Com
-
Kevin Cunningham’s Title, Concept, and Character Structure!
My Vision: By making my high-quality writing and speaking known in many venues (the Industry, Youtube, podcasts, books), I will create a reputation as a profoundly powerful, thoughtful, and skilled writer, and be sought after for new and rewrite activities at the highest levels.
What I learned from doing this assignment: This is always an interesting exercise when I have a complex society as the setting: there are many obstacles to the hero’s journey, and many enigmatic forces at work supporting him and hindering him – sometimes simultaneously. But it makes sense to have a focused villian to give structure to the story.
———
Title: Going Native
Concept: A woke New England town votes to give their land back to the Native American tribe they stole it from centuries before – putting leadership of the town in the hands of a clueless slacker native teen
Character Structure: Protagonist versus Antagonist. The hero is the slacker Native teen who’d rather just play video games than honor his culture, the villain is the nefarious rich townsfolk who are manipulating the land turnover so they back a new casino and get even richer. Of course, there is also a romantic triangle (the hero is enamored of a white girl, and loved by a “princess” back home) and a dramatic triangle (the hero wrestles with his own family).
-
Oh God I love this, Kevin! Soooo much opportunity to poke fun at, well, everyone! (Have you seen THE HUNT? If not, definitely worth checking out – does a great job of mocking the “woke left”, while not excusing the hard-core conservative right either!)
-
Thanks, Bobby. I’ll check it out. I’m certainly aiming to be an equal-opportunity satirist.

if a good movie series: could encourage blue planet bipeds to not extinctish all life as Happened on Mars
RomCom/Divine Fi
Creator sets up romantic experiment of total opposites to see if there are parable lessons to keep free will bipeds from nuking their blue planet to extinction as previously happened on red Mars.
“Romancing vs Extinction” or “Romancing Blue Planet vs Extinction”

-
MY VISION: Develop a successful methodology for writing screenplays that yields the following: completion of this and other screenplays which ‘read’ at a PRO, story-telling level, provide me fair compensation -and most of all, lead to more screenwriting opportunities.WHAT I LEARNED: Going with my gut. After reviewing my concepts, I came up with:
a.) this concept kept nagging at me (…friends my age -who also grew up with the ‘subject matter’- were universally curious about my Protagonist too),
b.) It is ‘the’ concept I’ve most wanted to bring to life,
c.) It is the story I want the world to experience through characters I will give voice to -and the screenplay idea that’s been roiling around in my brain for the longest time.
TITLE: FINDING DOCTOR FUNK
CONCEPT: Bio-Pic/drama – Story of legendary Jazz Pianist Vince Guaraldi.
CHARACTER STRUCTURE: Protagonist vs. Antagonist(s)… (‘Outside Forces’ working to prevent our Protagonist from realizing his dream).
Thank you.
Kevin Patrick Goulet
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
NOTES: Not to bury the lede here too much but- GUARALDI’S musical scores for 1960’s PEANUTS Cartoons, *‘A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS’, ‘IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN CHARLIE BROWN’ are universally known… legendary.
GUARALDI’S Jazz Christmas ‘album’ compositions ‘Linus And Lucy‘, ‘Christmas Time Is Here‘, ‘Skating‘ (most notables from the cartoon soundtrack)- introduced Jazz to millions of kids without them really being aware of it. I’ve always liked that cultural side effect.
Between 1965 and right up until his untimely death in 1976, VINCE GUARALDI scored music for 17 PEANUTS animated Television cartoon specials in total. Of the many TV specials he scored, best knows *A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS’ and ‘IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN CHARLIE BROWN’ remain a staple of annual television viewership for children of all ages since first debuting on the CBS Broadcast Television Network in 1965.
But what series of life events led GUARALDI to that opportunity? How did the ‘PEANUTS’ producers find their guy, ‘Doctor Funk’? What ‘sound’ would he bring to the finished project that very nearly caused it be canceled by CBS before it even “Aired”…?!
And how on earth did VINCE GUARALDI die -at a much too young 47- still doubting his work, still searching to create a musical composition worthy of ‘jazz standard’ status, unable to fathom he might have already created multiple, well respected works of art that would-one-day-be-crowned with that very ‘Jazz Standard’ legacy adulation he thought would forever elude him?
For me though, what makes the diminutive 5’6″ GUARALDI’S story most worthy of cinematic definition is- like other driven, complicated artists of the 20th century, GUARALDI (nick-named ‘Doctor Funk‘ by his music industry peers) was a complete original… and he had his demons too. “VINCE GUARALDI: The Peanuts Music Guy” (incidentally- one of my failed brain-storming session ‘titles’)… well that would have just been too shallow a title. ‘Peanuts music’ was just the tip of the iceberg. FINDING DOCTOR FUNK is His story -and I’m going to tell it. Looking forward to any feedback. Thanks.
Kevin
P.S.,
*On May 10, 2022 – the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified VINCE GUARALDI’S Jazz album, ‘A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS’ with QUINTUPLE PLATINUM status. In layman’s terms: Sales topping 5 million copies… and the sales just keep coming. (Already done tons of research about him. So many blanks to ‘fill-in’ about this guy… VG- one fascinating little dude!)

I have the Charlie Brown Christmas album, Kevin, and love it.
-
Hi Claire, It really is a great piece of music. I’m bias, but I find it timeless. It’s one of the most ‘purchased/listened to’ Christmas albums ever. Pretty difficult to go through ‘fall’ or ‘winter’ without hearing a Guaraldi track in a mall/store, a coffee shop, somewhere. Always brings a smile to my face!

<font size=”3″>What I learned doing this assignment is how outlining saves time. Do you build a house without blueprints? Maybe if you’re insane. So, why write a whole script without your blueprint, which is what an outline is. Outlining and going step by step allows you to create without stress or fear. Take one step at a time and you will get there.

What I learned from doing this assignment is that I was STALLED!!! Thank goodness on was able to speak with Hal on the Saturday class TODAY because I felt so behind and also was hung up on the fact that I had created this project during the Binge worthy TV class but had made the protagonist a force of magic that was hidden genetic talent. Hal encourage me to just get going, pull out the old to fill in the blanks, later go back with the “new” material and do the assignments in 5 mins! Well, I did that just that. I pulled out my concept that I’d worked on in MOD 1 and felt empowered and had a clearer eye looking at it and felt this way because I could see how I”d honed the concept and felt the title was working for me. YAY, I’m moving on to Mod 2 Lesson 2 now!

What I learned from this assignment is a pretty cool means of determining the overall structure of the story.
