Subject line: Jack Young’s Three Circles of Characters

What I learned doing this assignment is character development and understanding their place and role in the story is extremely important. This will allow us to build characters that are rich in detail and dimension. I noted while looking at the characters in American Horror Story how unique and different each character is. So when the main character is not on the screen, we are still entertained and engaged by the other characters and their stories.

    ASSIGNMENT 1:

American Horror Story Season 10, Episode II:

    A. Main Characters Circle: Harry, Doris, and Alma Gardener

    B. Connected Circle: Belle Noir, Mickey, Austin, TB Karen, Dr. Feldman (Lark)

    C. Environment Circle: Harry’s agent, Zombie Vampires, Grocery Store manager, male prostitute under bridge

    ASSIGNMENT 2:

The three circles of characters for my show titled “Stream: Episode I”

    A. Main Characters Circle: Michael Walker, Diane Walker (Wife), Nicholas Walker (Son), Professor Darlington

    C. Environment Circle: Professor Darlington’s caretaker, News reporters, People rioting and protesting, Doctor and nurses at hospital, Bartender in bar, Patrons in bar, Professor’s astral team, YMCA homeless men, police Officers

One sentence description of each of the Main Characters:

Michael Walker: Michael, an accountant and family man, is having an affair and has lost all of his family’s savings in a stock deal gone horribly bad.

Diane Walker (Wife): Diane is a dedicated wife and mother but her devotion to the marriage will be tested to the limits beyond life itself.

Nicholas Walker (Son): Nick, 5 years old, loves and idolizes his father.

Professor Darlington: The foremost expert on the human soul and possibly the only one on the planet that knows how to prevent man’s destruction from the “No-Birth” crisis.

Marty, (Michael’s friend): A risk taker who comes up with a get rich scheme that will lead him and Michael straight to prison.

Chris (Michael’s girlfriend): A girl that Michael hooked up with after his brother died and now she has her hooks deep into Michael.

Johnny (Michael’s older brother): A handicapped Afghanistan war hero and Michael’s older brother who overdoses on heroin.

George (Michael’s father): A Korean war veteran who supported the war but blames Michael for Johnny’s death.

Bonnie (Michael’s mother): She tries to keep what’s left of her family together after the loss of her son.

Gina (Female Demon in bar): A beautiful blonde that shows up in the bar and reveals herself as a demon with a warning for Michael.

News reporters: News reporters on the news reveal to us how the continuing “No-Birth” crisis is crippling the world and may lead to the end of mankind.

People rioting and protesting: People rioting and protesting against the government for inaction demonstrate the chaos associated with the “No-Birth” crisis.

Doctor and nurses at hospital: Doctors and nurses at the hospital treating Michael for the onset of stage 4 brain cancer.

Police Officers: Police officers respond to the event when the professor purposely stops Michael’s heart to send him into the Stream.

Cathryn Atkinson’s Three Circles of Characters

What I learned – Breaking characters into three circles is an excellent way to highlight how each character plays a part in the overall story of the series, where they are in the food chain. It’s a pyramid. It also helps focus on the connection of all characters to the protagonist (and antagonist). It solidifies the world and plot.

In watching Mr. Robot, you can see how characters who might be considered in the connected circle can move closer to the main circle when the narrative needs them. You can see how they bolster Elliot’s journey. I feel like we don’t have a full understanding yet of who is Elliot’s main character circle, especially in terms of the female characters. Shayla and Angela are the flipsides of each other.

    ASSIGNMENT 1:

Three Circles of Characters for MR ROBOT

    A. Main Characters’ Circle – Elliot Alderson, Mr Robot, Tyreill Wellick, Angela,

    B. Connected Circle: Shayla, Darlene, Invisible friends, Terry Colby, Gideon (boss), Ollie (boyfriend), Cisco (musician/hacker), fsociety people, Fernando Vera (drug dealer), Krista (psychologist), father (not alive), Mr X driver.

    C. Environment Circle: EvilCorp lawyers, Doggie, Allsafe workers, subway travellers, cops, New Yorkers,

    ASSIGNMENT 2:

    1. Three circles of characters for RUN ANGELITA.

    A. Main Characters Circle:

    B. Connected Circle: Luis Alves, Nana Alves, Rosalino, Moneda, Aguila, Warden Mac, Freya, The Minutemen (Cory, Simon, Buddy), The captive refugees (Estella, Older Woman, Teenage boy), Johnny Johnson, Waitress in truck stop, Waitress in LA, Lynelle, CBP Officer, Beck (guard), Matteo and Santiago, Good Ole Boys, Young Refugees, Rocky/He-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed (Veronica’s editor), Vintner, Grape Pickers, woman in truck, Judge, FBI agent Sloane, Two lawyers, CIA Agent,

    C. Environment Circle: Cartel henchmen, Walking migrants, Teacher at Angelita’s school, Eduardo (dead), Detained Migrants, Detention guards, Customs and Border Services Protection Guards. Texans, Arizonans, Mexicans, Californians. Detained refugee children, guard dogs, online trolls, restaurant patrons, nurses, doctor, hospital security, SUV driver, Police, FBI agents, DEA agents, El Salvadorean official, Patrons at The Refuge Coffeeshop, People on vacation.

    2. Give us a one sentence description of each of the Main Characters.

Angelita Alves A spoiled 16-year-old El Salvador girl who has been trained in shooting and martial arts, and who goes on the run after her accountant brother and grandmother are killed by the cartel he secretly works for.

Chance Tremblay, 17, Texan with a cowboy’s honor and a way with rifles, who rescued Angelita after she escapes from detention and promises to help her.

Veronica Segundo, 39-year-old journalist and Chance’s friend, she is an ex-marine who agrees to help Angelita and Chance in exchange for the story of her career.

David Quinn’s Three Circles of Characters

What I learned doing this assignment is that I can ALWAYS get more creative with the kinds of characters that will complement the protagonists journey. I am not done.

I am still playing with two ideas for my project. Blythe: Nightvision is a true new concept created in our model based on “source material,” a published comic book series I created and scripted. Brooklyn the Barbarian is a new concept straight from the dirt.

Ian: brilliant psychopath, father of the virus, manipulator of all his creatures, including Blythe

    <div>

Alice James – human shaman with spirituality/magic than gives her limited insight to the sub-world of creatures – mercurial, allies with both Blythe and Ian

Franco – human mechanic obsessed with his client Blythe, as his father Franco was

    B. Connected Circle:

Braals, Harpies, Rifters, Wraiths, Despoilers, Infant Incubi and Succubi, etc. Creatures – all of Blythe’s sisters (Ian’s lovers) around the world and across the ten decades, such as Eve, creature who uses her power to beguile 1960s Hollywood </div><div>

Humans entangled in Blythe’s life / war ie Franco the human mechanic obsessed with his client, Blythe, his father Vincenzo, who was a victim to the same attraction in 1950s Rome, Bette Noir, club kid and wannabe vampire circa 1990

    C. Environment Circle:

“Night shift” Humans – bars, clubs, hospitals, law enforcement, criminals – create possibilities to make each one complementary to Blythe, that is, designed to be a specific challenge to her war or her vital lie

    Brooklyn the Barbarian

Action/Comedy. Serial. “A Leader Journeys into an Uncharted World”

Yesterday, Gustavo “Gus” Silva just wanted to finish his first year at Brooklyn College with passing grades. His motto’s always been, “Leave me out of it.”

This morning, he woke up in a prehistoric sword & sorcery world naked between two strange young women, one who has a monkey head. And then the dinosaur-riding monkey guard attacked “usurper to the throne!”

Eric Humble’s Three Circles of Characters

What I learned is: that once you organize the characters based on the role they play in the main character’s journey, you not only are able to juggle the characters without being distracted, overwhelmed, or side-tracked by the peripheral characters, but you’re able to keep the transformational journey front-and-center. I recently took the Writing the Profound Screenplay course with screenwritingU, where I really started to understand transformational journeys beyond the basic Mini-Movie Method. I was really struck for the first time while doing this lesson at how the transformational journey of a TV series is at the root of the structure in the same way it is with a feature film – and that much of the challenges that move the character through the journey come from the other characters to varying degrees. Organizing the characters in terms of the role they play within that transformational journey really helps keep the story on track and keeps those “profound elements” at the forefront. I’ve never approached supporting characters this way before, and I’m excited to see how I can write them into the story so that they engage the transformational journey via the main characters, and without the environment circle characters distracting from the most important emotional aspects of the main story.

    Assignment 1:

    MR. ROBOT:

    ASSIGNMENT 2

What I learned doing this assignment is that I expect some of my minor characters in the environmental circle may become more connected circle characters as I develop the project further.

NO MAN’S LAND – By Eloise Healey

    Main characters

Emma Richardson – 32 years old, ex-convict, scarred physically and emotionally, Emma is sick of the damage men have done to her life and dreams of a peaceful life free from their influence.

Mary Winthorpe – 25 years old, ex-convict, idealistic and a romantic at heart, Mary hopes that transportation to Van Diemen’s Land will turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

James Sheldon – 29 years old, escaped convict serving time – charming but hardened, James doesn’t want to hurt anyone but his priority is to survive and he’ll let nobody get in his way.

Ruth Martin – 38 years old, ex-convict Ruth is no longer a sexual object for men – much to her relief – and is ready for adventure but isn’t about to take commands from another woman.

    Connected circle

George MacKenzie – 42 years old, a former sailor, George has abandoned his post to make money off those keen to undertake the treacherous crossing of the Tasman Sea.

Ann Phelps – 27 years old, ex-convict, Ann thinks she should be in charge of Emma’s settlement instead – and she’d rule it with an iron fist if she could.

Sarah – 31 years old, ex-convict, Sarah has seen enough death, pain and suffering to last a lifetime and believes in taking the humanitarian option whenever possible.

Aboriginal Man – 23 years old, a young warrior who wants to protect his people from the sickness that always comes after anyone sees the strange white people.

Aboriginal Woman – 38 years old, she’s never seen a white woman before and is confused by their lack of power within their own society.

Charles – 24 years old, ex-convict who wants money, sex and power, and doesn’t care how he gets any of it.

    Environment Circle

Convict women, ex-convict women and men, guards, soldiers, free settlers, politicians and their families, sailors, Aboriginal people.
