    Assignment #1

    Show: The Americans

    Three Circles of Characters

    A. Main Characters Circle:

The main characters are the FBI agent, Stan Beeman, and his neighbors, the two Soviet agents posing as an American couple, Elizabeth Jennings and Phillip Jennings.

    B. Connected Circle:

For each of the main characters, there are family members (Beeman’s wife and son; the Jennings kids), coworkers (Beeman’s partner and boss; the other Soviet agents and handlers; the travel agency workers for the Jennings’s cover), and people any of the three characters are actively working, whether as informants or targets.

    C. Environment Circle:

There is anyone associated with the Soviet embassy, the FBI, the neighborhood, random strangers.

Meg Stout’s Three Circles of Characters for The Norman Queen.

What I learned doing this assignment is how easy it is to fill up a world with enough people to get the “job” done.

    A. Main Characters Circle:

Knútr is the second son of King Sweyn of Denmark, exiled because only the eldest son can inherit. He learns his father thinks he would have been the better king, but plans to conquer England and make Knútr heir to the English throne.

Emma is second daughter of the deceased Duke Rikard of Normandy. When her older sister marries the Duke of Brittany, King Sweyn asks Emma to become betrothed to Prince Harald of Denmark, with young Knútr acting as intermediary. Emma and Knútr come to secretly love one another.

King Æthelred is King of England because his brothers were murdered. He was cursed in his youth by the mother of his dead half-brother. Now a widower and desperate to forestall the curse, he attacks Normandy and demands Emma become his Queen.

    B. Connected Circle:

Each character has immediate family. Emma and Æthelred have royal retainers and Emma has the friendship of Ædgyth, her oldest step-daughter. Knútr has his mentor, Thorkell, the Danes killed during the English attack on Normandy, and others he will meet during the course of his quest, such as his brother-in-law Eilaf. Emma’s confessor is part of the connected circle.

    C. Environment Circle:

The environment circle consists of anyone in Denmark, Normandy, or England that needs to be there to support the story, such as guards, ladies in waiting, or the various combatants, for example the un-named Danes who are murdered while defending Knútr’s aunt during the massacre of St. Brice’s Day (the public incitement for King Sweyn’s attacks on England).

Meg Stout’s Three Circles of Characters for Children of Heaven

What I learned doing this assignment is how easy it is to fill up a world with enough people to get the “job” done. And rinse and repeat for the story I am creating and publishing on Vella.

    A. Main Characters Circle:

Dr. John C. Bennett is an 1840s medical doctor specializing in women’s medicine whose wife kicks him out because she mistakenly believes he is a bigamist. Bennett goes to Illinois to make a name and fame for himself, hoping to win his wife back to his side.

Annie Cowles is an unmarried woman in her mid-twenties who becomes governess to the children of Mormon founder, Joseph Smith. Traumatized by the brutality and schism the Mormons experienced in Missouri, Annie strives to overcome her fear and accept the courtship of newcomer, Dr. Bennett. [Bennett begins to court Annie when he learns there is no hope of reconciling with his estranged wife, only to learn the estranged wife refuses to grant him a divorce.]

Jonathan Holmes becomes a widower. Annie, who was a friend to Jonathan’s dead wife, becomes effective mother to Jonathan’s surviving daughter.

Eliza Snow is an unmarried woman in her late thirties and next-door neighbor to Dr. Bennett. As the rogue “doctrine” of illicit intercourse spreads among the Mormons, Eliza Snow believes Bennett’s pitch that Eliza is to be Bennett’s secret wife, unaware she is practice for Bennett’s plan to impregnate Annie. Eliza becomes pregnant. When Bennett is expelled from the Mormon community, it is arranged that Eliza will become wife to widower Jonathan Holmes.

    B. Connected Circle:

Bennett has a range of familial and professional contacts, including Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. Later Bennett will have a string of women and his friends and colleagues as he is elected Mayor of Nauvoo, the main Illinois city founded by the Mormons. Annie has family contacts, the family she works for, other women working in the Smith home. Jonathan has his wife and daughters. Eliza has her family and, later, her fellow officers in the Church’s women’s organization, a small group that includes Annie Cowles.

    C. Environment Circle:

A cast of thousands as needed to populate the world of the American frontier, particularly along the Mississippi River.

Meg Stout’s Three Circles of Characters for Mr. Riley

What I learned doing this assignment is how easy it is to fill up a world with enough people to get the “job” done. And rinse and repeat for another screenplay for which I’ve created a first draft.

    A. Main Characters Circle:

Mr. Riley Zhang is a brilliant man who has achieved massive financial success through canny investment. When Riley’s long-time girlfriend breaks off their relationship, Riley is thrilled to meet a woman online who needs his help to secure her inheritance.

Sue (Zhang) Hill is Mr. Riley’s oldest daughter, a professional who is horrified to learn her father believes he will obtain a gold mine and hundreds of millions of dollars from contacts in Africa. Ms. Hill petitions for guardianship and conservatorship of her father.

Jane (Zhang) Hunkin is Mr. Riley’s favorite daughter. Jane initially objects to Sue’s plan to petition, believing it is possible to persuade their father without resorting to the courts. But when Jane learns Riley has sent the scammers over $1M and can no longer pay his mortgages or taxes, she works with Sue. When Riley flees the state where he and Ms. Hill live, Jane is able to become her father’s guardian, only to find that Riley plans to litigate his way to emancipation.

    B. Connected Circle:

There is the extended family to which all the main characters are related, together with the scammers and the lawyers and court officials with whom each of the litigants interact. There are also Riley’s former wives and his former girlfriend. Riley has several renters, many Salvadoran, who he pressures for advance funds while neglecting maintenance needed on the properties. There are also the expert evaluators, who struggle to help the court protect Riley while allowing as much autonomy as appropriate, each coming to the evaluation with different expertise and beliefs about what protection is needed.

    C. Environment Circle:

A cast of dozens to flesh out the legal and familial interactions affecting the family.

      Donna,

I am reading your synopsis of Betrayed, and wondering how on earth you are writing the story of my life? Minus the teenagers (thank God!). I also need a handy man, young and cute would be the top requirement. Not sure you need to change this yet. It is very relatable.

Jane’s Three Circles of Characters – What I learned doing this assignment is that just putting all of the characters that I know about so far down in writing really helps to begin thinking about the different ways that the four main characters may end up interacting, both with each other and those in the connected circle.

    Lesson 2, Assignment 2:

Doug Johnson’s Three Character Circles: Tin Men

What I learned doing this assignment is that my anchor character isn’t the most intriguing character in my story and needs work.

Concept: Four Colorado sheetmetal workers stash a million dollars worth of contraband inside the ductwork of a new maximum security prison during its last month of construction.

    A. Main Circle:

John Tampico, 40’s, second-to-none sheetmetal worker and second-to-many family man. Born leader without any desire to be one, he loyally holds it all together but wants more out of life.

Dana Tampico, 30’s, John’s little sister. Sheetmetal worker #2. Irresponsible and free, an itinerant worker who’s spent time in jail herself.

Gary Bellows, 40’s, John’s best friend. Sheetmetal worker #3. Married to a corrections officer, he dreamed of being a metal sculpture artist but settled for a steady paycheck.

Charles “Chick” Young, 30’s, Gary’s apprentice. Sheetmetal worker #4. A daredevil who leaps before he looks.

    B. Connected Circle:

Keira Tampico, 40’s, a park ranger and John’s wife, a courageous, stubborn rescuer. Ivy Tampico, John and Keira teen daughter, takes after her Aunt Dana. Tyler Tampico, John and Keira’s grade-school son, thoughtful and reserved.

Frank McCormick, the asshole shop boss. Calvin Empers, a prison contraband king. Frizell, the crew’s inside man. Flo Bellows, Gary’s wife, a corrections officer. Motel manager, nosy fly on the wall.

    C. Environment Circle:

Rival construction trades, Building inspectors, Metalworkers union, Prisoners and CO’s, Local police and officials, Prison spouses, Halfway houses, Town residents and business owners, gangs and organized crime on the outside with connections on the inside, Ivy and Tyler’s teachers, friends, classmates.

Assignment 1: Three Circles of Characters in Supernatural

    A. Main Character Circle: The two, monster-hunting brothers, Sam and Dean

    B. Connected Circle: The show splits its time between the season-long plot arc of Sam and Dean looking for their father, and the monster-of-the-week plots for each episode. Episode two’s connected circle all seem to be only for the latter plot: Tommy, a camper kidnapped by a wendigo in the woods; Tommy’s sister, Hailey, who goes with Dean and Sam to rescue him; Tommy and Hailey’s brother, Ben; and Roy, a local hunter Hailey hires to lead them through the woods.

    C. Environment Circle: Tommy’s friends, Brad and Gary, who get killed by the wendigo; Ranger Wilkinson, a park ranger who tells Dean and Sam about the campers in the park; and Mr. Shaw, the only survivor from a wendigo attack years before.

Assignment 2: Three Circles of Characters for my novel, Athens, MN

What I learned during this assignment is that it’s very useful prioritizing your characters in this way. Don’t spread the focus of the audience too thinly, wanting to give every character their moment to shine. Always make sure to keep their role in the greater story in mind. Not everyone needs to have the same amount of dimension and care.

    A. Main Circle: Tom, a directionless young man in his 20’s, who discovers he is under a fairy curse when his grandfather dies, and decides to learn magic in order to escape; Mark, a jaded and cynical man in his late 40’s, who has become a very experienced magician on his own, and becomes Tom’s friend and mentor; Miguel, once an architect, but served prison time after getting into a barfight and now makes his living as a contractor and gives Tom a job as a day-laborer; Lizzie, a witch who has unnaturally preserved her life through magic and now rules a fairy court called Everlasting Summer.

    B. Connected Circle: Tom’s parents, Nathaniel and Catherine, a loving, but overprotective couple, who try to stay close with their four, now grown children; Tom’s sisters: Talia, the adventurous one; Cathy, the sensitive one; and Lily, the silly one; Charles, Tom’s grandfather who apparently dies, but who keeps sending his grandson messages from beyond the grave; Louis, an older man, and ex-pat from England, who knows a great deal about the history of magic; Robby, a mischievous employee of Miguel’s with several side-scams going to collect extra cash.

    C. Environment Circle: The crew of regulars at Connecticut Yankee’s, a cigar lounge that the main characters frequent; the homeowners that Miguel and his employees work for in the Twin Cities metro area, where the story is set; Miguel’s other subcontractors, the servants in Everlasting Summer, Lizzie’s enchanted castle.

      Hi John!

Wondering which few of your several main characters are the main main characters? Also, does your story have a title? Thanks! Meg

Jason Bortz’ Three Circles of Characters

What I learned doing this assignment is these circles are subject to change as new characters are introduced, so it isn’t important that they are rigid or “right”; this is more of a guideline to maintain focus upon the A-Story and B-Story characters and keep them clear as storylines progress.

Maggie Ketchum, 40’s, pragmatic, Gina’s boss, lives vicariously through Gina’s writing which she’s read secretly; wistfully wants to dream again.

Mark Ketchum, 50, Maggie’s husband and would do anything for her, blind to how being responsible has robbed him of joy and liking himself.

Parker Douglas, 30’s, bartender at Doolie’s Pub, intense and witty, moved to Point North to start over, fascinated with Gina.

Chris MacAllister, 30’s, Broadway actor in town workshopping a passion project, drawn to Gina’s ability with words.

    Sean’s Three Circles of Characters

    — What I learned doing this assignment:

    1. The main characters are on a journey, they are the smallest circle. (Main Characters Circle)

    2. The other circles interact with them and only to be part of their journey.

    3. Connected Circle will be closest to Main Characters with more frequent, deeper, and personal interaction.

    4. Environment Circle is biggest circle and consists of characters that fill ‘standard’ roles (for your story) and for scenes, episodes etc. Also, this circle is where the “extras” and visual background roles.

    5. It is particularly important to get these identified so you can focus on the relation to the journey and the story you are going to tell.

    ASSIGNMENT 1:

    In SUPERNATURAL, the

Main Characters Circle is Dean and Sam Winchester

Connected Circle is John and Mary Winchester, as well as Sam’s girlfriend Jessica. Also, the evil thing that killed both Mary and Jessica.

Environment Circle is both victims and survivors of (monsters, demons, and ghosts etc.), local law enforcement and background roles relevant to each place or episode.

    ASSIGNMENT 2:

    3 Circles for:

    The S A T

Bridget McCabe – a tenacious, dramatically unique, and larger than life FBI profiler with a prolific use of her stunning looks and sensuality to get anything she wants.

The DEVIL – an arrogant, mocking, and constant presence of evil in our lives, also the most powerful of the
fallen Angels, with a proclivity for the macabre having absolutely no boundaries where we are concerned.

    Connected Characters Circle

    Ana Stasia aka Anastasia Krovopuskov

    Caliel

    Mitchell Dawe

    Environment Circle

    FBI Director

    SILLICK band members

    FBI agents

    Mitchell Dawe’s victims

    Background extras

    Three circles of character

    Camilla Erlandsdotter

What I learned doing this assignment is…

While main characters soon “pop into your head” the connected circle is more difficult to nail and give something to do on screen. It’s very easy to use clichés (the doctor, the lawyer, the priest). These characters should be interesting too and their stakes should raise as well. More and more people in this category are presented as we go deeper into the story.

    Prison Break

    Main Character Circle

    Michael, Lincoln and Veronica

    Connected Circle

Michael’s cell-mate – Sucer, John Abruzzi, Pope, Dr. Tuncredi, D.B. Cooper (with cat), Lincoln’s son – LJ – and his mother, Veronica’s boyfriend, Fibonacci.

    Environment Circle

Prisoners and guards, CIA guys, judges, prosecutors, mob guys.

    My Show

    Water of life

Chicago – in the late 20ies. Prohibition.

Story: three siblings in trouble with the law flee their home country Sweden to join their uncle in Chicago. When they arrive, they discover their uncle has lied to the family about his American dream. It’s more of a night mare. They will be destitute, unless they can make money on a very special skill – excellent moonshine aquavit (water of life) made out of raw potatoes, spiced with local herbs.

    Main Character Circle

Anna (35), wise, hardworking, the silent type, responsible, determination, a-sexual. Head of the family (A-female) after the death of their parents. Works in the post-office

Dreams of the US – where she can make “the big buck”!

Amanda (30) a singer talent, talkative, curious, passionate, impulsive. Works in a cafe.

Bertil (17) their gay little brother, spoiled, sensitive, charming, an expert liar. Works for a barber.

The family house (Amanda lives there with Bertil) is in the middle of the forest. Built by their father.

    Connected Circle

In Sweden, Anna is married to Arvid – the local policeman (30), a handsome, jealous control freak and alcoholic. It is not a happy marriage. Arvid does not want Anna to work – in particularly not in the café. He’s a control freak. When he’s drunk he beats her.

They’ve got an uncle in Chicago – Henning (55), that keep boosting about how well he’s doing but he’s barely making ends needs working in a factory in Chicago.

In Chicago – Anna will need to connect with a mobster – to start making and distributing her aquavit (water of life). Anna will meet up with jazz musicians and club owners (that needs to pay bribes)

A love interest for Bertil – maybe a journalist writing about the mob.

    Their parents (flash-backs)

    Environment circle

    -Chicago (as a city)

-The nature around the city (as an entity)

    -Mobsters

    -Dirty and straight policemen

    -Neighbors

    -Musicians

    -Night club and speakeasy visitors

    -customers

    Environment Circles

    Church

    Government Employees

    FBI

    other paranormal witnesses

    technology

    Air technology – Spaceships, Airplanes

What I learned about in this assignment. I still don’t have a definitive 3rd/4th character. By analyzing Mr. Robot I notices that the 3 main characters occupy 3 main spaces in the show. By which I mean:

    Mr Robot = F-Society = Hacking

Elliot = AllSafe Work Environment = His life = Drugs Mental illness = Therapist

    Tyrell = E(vil) Corp

Three distinct circles or environments within the show.

Molly’s Script Carrington Manor MAIN CHARACTER CIRCLE

    FOUR MAIN CHARACTERS

COTA (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant) Gwenn

    Spirit (Gwenn’s Mom)

    PTA (Physical Therapy Assistant) Sally

    DOR (Director of Rehab) Terry

    PT (Physical Therapist) Earl

    ENVIRONMENTAL CIRCLE

Employees of Carrington Manor, Visiting/Involved Family of Patients, Medicare Compliance team, Police, Adult Protective Services,

2.) Brief Description of each Character

Carrington Manor – (can I make an actual company a character?)In its heyday was an amazing facility but has fallen into the hands of corrupt management and is falling apart at every corner, involved in petty crimes and the constant talk of the town.

COTA Gwenn – Hopeful therapist who comes from a successful career in Skilled Nursing moves back to take care of her senile mom Spirit. She is desperate for work of any kind to get herself out of huge financial debts (student loans and bad investments).

Spirit (Gwenn’s Mom) – Senile woman wearing only Kamono’s attempting to fool everyone that she is totally sane and does not need help living alone in her 80’s, makes Gwenn’s life almost impossible.

PTA Sally – Gwenn’s main support for her carrying out her heroic actions, single mom, hard working, very resigned about her work environment but more intelligent then her boss who oversees her.

DOR Terry – Gwenn’s boss who is completely incompetent, loud, inappropriate and not sure of her sexuality, loves to sexually herass employees.

PT Earl – Japanese American, doubts the system and thinks every healthcare modality is a conspiracy, he is great with the patients and there to save the day when Gwenn gets over her head, but doubts Gwenn is competent or actually does her job.

Is anyone else having a hard time going back and forth between assignments and postings? It seems unclear to me, and I have to really dig into the program to figure out where I am at and what I am supposed to be doing.

Cooper James – Three Circles of Character

MY Three Circles of Character for “Edgemont”

    A. Simone (late 40s)- a strong woman in a dystopian future. Rebellious until she became a mother to twin sons, Roman and Remy. Now she must protect them and what’s left of her aging father’s family fortune… The Edgemont Hotel.

Roman (son, 20s) heir to the throne, smart and calm. He listens to his mother.

Remy (son, 20s) smart, but rebellious like his mother, which creates conflict and puts them at odds.

Mysterious Woman (60) heard by Simone only in voiceover.

King (Simone’s Father, 70s) once ruled supreme but has lost the fight. Often in conflict with his daughter, Simone. Will do anything for Remy. Ready to sell off the family fortune.

    B. Mrs. Conners (60s), Senator (50s), Danielle – Senator’s new wife (30s) Johnny (13) a disconnect, Johnny’s father (also Senator’s brother) (40s) Owens (50s)

    C. Kids from the town (7-20) remaining citizens in town, police, disconnects (people on the run) real estate developers (people trying to take control of the Edgemont)

What I learned doing this assignment was focusing on trimming a lot of distracting ideas that will probably get in the way and lead me all over God’s creation.

What I’ve learned in this process is the need to define the circles to have available possible actors to step into the store and create various situations, conflicts etc., it’s like creating a map before the outline. I would think this also would help in the budget, knowing how many are needed, who can fill in as extras and so on. I like the connected circle, I think that is important for the conflicts and moving the story forward or in the direction needed ie; flashback to a younger age or time. This is a great starting point.

Lots of decisions to be made but will let it ride for now to see if I figure it out more along the way. Don’t to get too hung up about it.

    A. Main Characters

Kalina – late 40’s, she’s a mother of two kids under 10 and an imperfect hero. She tends to be “successful” but not necessarily true to herself, others and her path. She goes back to the field for the money.

Mackenzie (Kalina’s sister) – beautiful, sensual, confident. She works for the same agency and sees the job for what it is. She doesn’t get bogged down by the details and knows how to enjoy the perks of her work. She is very successful and charismatic.

Astrid (Kalina’s boss 20 years ago) – comes across at first as understanding but ends up being quite hard and undermining. She started out young in the company and got beaten down. She learned the hard way and became what she used to criticize.

    Lesson 2

What I learned doing this assignment is: My concept has been haunting me for a year or so. At first, I was trying to fit this into feature format. That’s where it stalled. Too many story lines, too many characters, too many plot points… too much to fit into 2 hrs. I now see that these very troubling aspects are my greatest strength for developing BWTV. Plenty of treads to weave in and out; creating an undeniable tapestry that must be seen in its entirety.

    ASSIGNMENT 1:

    A. Main Characters Circle: Clark, Finn, Abby, Canceler, Wells, Cain, Blake,

Anauk: Leader of the ski – dwelling alien species who controls access for all aliens on earth to the dark side of the moon where the UN of Alien species lays in shadow.

Saltar: Reptilian / Salamander like leader of the water dwelling alien nation who is playing both sides with the Longheads and the Skifliers.

Mark Steelman: 5-star general who mediates top secret relations with the alien factions on earth.

Maryum: The One, who the longheads are training, underground, to bring peace to earth and free humanity.

    B. Connected Circle:

Tallas’ ancestors who arrived 150,000 yrs ago.

Tallas’ ancestors who arrive present day and blow the whole thing apart to the public

    Anauk’s army of fliers

    Saltar’s fleet of underwater wariors.

Saltar’s daughter who is in love with Maryum, but is forced to be with Anauk’s son in order to produce a hybrid.

The Earth military machine who knows, but hides it from the public

The alien researchers who are trying to uncover the truth

The existing human alien hybrids who know / don’t know what they are.

Norene Smiley LESSON 2 ASSIGNMENTS – THREE CIRCLES OF CHARACTERS

What I learned form this assignment: This made me do more thinking and rethinking about characters, and relationships and how each character has to support the story in some way. I think this will be a fluid process as the story develops.

    ASSIGNMENT 1 EXAMPLES SHOWS:

    JESSICA JONES

MAIN CHARACTERS CIRCLE: Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Trish Walker, Will Simpson, Kilgrave, Hope

    B. CONNECTED CIRCLE: Malcom, Jeri, Oscar, Pryce, Inez, Alisa

    B. CONNECTED CIRCLE: Registrar, Sorry (blind seer), Canker (bully), Got & Goat (nightcrawlers), Nancy (Agrippa’s son)

    C. ENVIRONMENTAL CIRCLE: Underlings, engineers, fixers, idle hoi polloi of the Outside, little midgins, and scurries of the KEEP, clerks, mechanicals

Scrap is the protagonist, a darkling orphan living in the Keep, helping Ruby and Bardo preserve and document remnants of the natural world and cast-offs from the Outside.

Sybil is the fated curse living in Scrap, waiting to ripen and cause havoc in the world.

Ruby and Bardo Hoagg, shape-shifters and guardians of the Keep, as well as Scrap.

Agrippa Chafe, matron of the Institute of Child Protection, is a soft, squishy mother figure on the outside and an evil manipulator on the inside.

Fidget is Scrap’s 3rd guardian in the form of a cricket-like creature, half inspect/half machine.

Toodie a street waif befriended by Scrap on the Outside.

    Main character circle:

MARTIN: When a gregarious, fun-loving, and erudite student is hit by lightning on a clear day, he vows to become a monk. He abandons a bright future to join a monastery in search of peace with an angry God. When finds corruption and greed, he crushes the Church with sacred Scripture and shatters the Empire with a call for equality and freedom.

Martin’s father, HANS, is a self-made man with a huge vision of what is possible in the world. He has climbed from an uneducated worker in the mines to an international businessman, owning the smelter. DAY TWO ASSIGNMENT

What I learned doing this assignment is… that your main characters inner circle need not be present, eg Hannah, June’s daughter in the Handmaid’s Tale. They can loom large as absent. Also, what makes them intruiging is not the high stakes of the events that happen to them necessarily but how much empathy we feel for their dilemma based on what is important to them.

    A. Main Characters Circle: Lani, her flight mechanic BF, her NCO who trains her, Squad leader perpetrator.

    B. Connected Circle: Lani’s brother, Army chaplain, flight surgeon, Master Sergeant, Commanding Officer, Pele

    C. Environment Circle: JAG office, Battalion personnel, HI civilians who do and do not like the Military.

Give us a quick list for each circle.

    Deadline: 24 hours

    ASSIGNMENT 2:

    1. Give us a one sentence description of each of the Main Characters.

LANI – DRY, QUIET, SUBMISSIVE, THE PHOENIX BEFORE THE FLAMES.

HAWAIIAN BF – LOUD, GOOFY, BRASH, WARM, SUPPORTIVE – BRINGS LANI OUT OF HER SHELL AND PROVIDES HER WITH BACK UP. THE BRAWN TO THE BRAIN?

NCO – ROBOTIC TO SOME, BUT WARM ONCE YOU GET TO KNOW HER. SHE IS TOUGH AND ENCOURAGES LANI TO DO HER BEST. BUT FINDS VULNERABILITY DIFFICULT AND LANI’S GRIEF and VULNERABILITY IS INITIALLY NOT WELL MET.
