Assignment One:
Show: Game of Thrones
What I learned is that Game of Thrones is multilayered, with mysteries within mysteries, which would work out very well for my show.
Mystery type 1 #1– Ned and his relationship with the King, and then being branded a traitor to the new king, the kid. Brings up the question “What is going to happen to Ned, then his family?”
Mystery type 1, #2 – Daenerys. She has an agenda, and how will it impact the characters in the 7 kingdoms.
Mystery type 1, #3 = Cersei and her ambitions, will she have Ned executed?
Big Picture Mystery #1 = White Walkers, north of the wall. What are they? Anyone killed by one returns as a zombie. Introduced in the pilot.
Big Picture Mystery #2 = Ned and his predicament
Big Picture Mystery #3 = Daenerys’ dragon eggs. Just shown occasionally, but over time they’ll hatch, and then what?
Assignment Two:
Angels of Vengeance Show Mysteries
What I learned while doing this assignment is expanding my concept, deepening the complexity of this show, mapping out the multiple mini-plots and over-arcing plotline for the show’s first season.
1. Shocking event mystery.
A. Shocking event – brutal murder of Brianna, Dan’s niece.
B. Secret – who is this person who kidnapped and murdered her in such a brutal fashion, and how does Gaia know all about it?
C. Investigation: Dan’s partner Jones takes lead on the homicide investigation, until another murder occurs.
WHO: (MISSING) The killer and his motivations, which somehow involve the Furies and a long-past event
WHAT: This is the event that triggers the rest of the series, with Dan becoming involved with the Furies.
WHEN: Occurs in our present day, modern times.
WHY: (Kept Secret first 6 episodes) The killer is pushed to kill, some force is driving him. A dark force.
WHERE: Small town in central California.
HOW: Killer uses a switchblade to not only murder the women, but also carves mysterious symbols into their flesh – symbols that only mean something to Gaia and her daughters, the Furies.
Part(s) Withheld: (1) The force driving the killer is a demon (2) And who, exactly, are the Furies?
Over Time Mystery
A Cover up: Furies keeping themselves a secret from the world around them.
B Secret: The killer is possessed by a demon, who reveals himself slowly across several episodes.
C Reveals: The demon controlling the serial killer is a power being out for revenge against the Furies, plus take over of the Underworld.
WHO: Main antagonist – Sorath.
WHAT: Plans to control the Underworld, and the fate of all human souls.
WHEN: As soon as he’s powerful enough after murdering and soaking up the life force of all the murdered young women. Also, takes advantage of a weakness in the Fury, Megaera.
WHY: Demon is driven by Revenge
WHERE: Present day earth, timeless in the Underworld.
HOW: Sorath, once he is strong enough, will launch an attack against the weakened Furies, kidnapping Megaera when she is at her most vulnerable.
Part Withheld: Just who is Dan and his connection to the ancient Gods & Goddesses? How does Dan factor, accidently, in weakening Megaera, allowing her to be taken by Sorath.

Why: culmination of a lifetime of experiences suddenly made sense for us both.

Module 1 – Lesson 8 – Inviting Obsession thru Mystery – Assignment
<hr width=”100%” size=”2″ align=”center”>Mike – Show Mysteries
What I learned doing this assignment is the critical importance of developing an overarching mystery that lasts an entire season. The question to answer is: What to leave in, what to leave out, and why. The immediate shocking event mystery is used to hook the audience; it MUST tie in with the larger, season-long mystery. Just like supporting characters to the protagonist, the smaller mysteries must tie in to the larger mystery even if obliquely.
ASSIGNMENT 2:
I. Create two mysteries for your show: one that shows up strong in the Pilot; the second one that is revealed over time.
(1) First mystery – protagonist’s kidnappers vanish the moment of impact. Protagonist saved by a ghost. (2) Larger mystery – Kidnappers and protagonist are not human, what are they, what do they want?

II. Create your Shocking Event Mystery and tell us the WWWWW and H, along with the part withheld.
A. Shocking Event: Caleb is kidnapped, taken away in a van. It collides with another vehicle. The captors (driver and passenger) vanish upon impact. Cocooned in a chrysalis, the shape of like his girl, Victoria, Caleb is ejected from the wreckage. The big mystery is: “What are they? How is any of this possible?”
B. Secret: We, the audience, are not told about their immortality. We assume it is magic as the passenger in the van drew occult symbols on the van walls. Furthermore, what are Necromancers and why are they coming?
C. Investigation: FBI agent handling Caleb’s case, finds decades’ old fingerprints in the van. When she returns to the crash site, she finds Caleb there. She questions him regarding the driver and who he is. Caleb gives her glimpse into his world, his telepathic powers then vanishes (teleports off) in front of her.
D. Who-What-When-Where-Why and How:
WHO kidnapped Caleb?
WHAT Caleb was doing – enjoying time with a friend at a café when he was abducted.
WHEN: Immediately, happening in real time.
WHERE: Chained to the floor in a van as it races down a deserted state road.
HOW: Caleb was kidnapped in the bathroom of a local café by a man using magic.
E. Part Withheld: What we don’t know is what creates the mystery:
WHAT exactly did his kidnappers want to extract from Caleb: his soul, his life force?
WHO are these Necromancers that the kidnappers are scared of and running from? ——————————————————————————————-
II. Create the Over Time Mystery, tell us the WWWWW and H, along with the part withheld.
A. Reveals: It starts with Caleb’s abduction, the interrogation and argument centered around his family, his beliefs, and the fear that the Necromancers are coming for them all.
B. Cover up: Necromancers, by the millions, are headed to earth. Their leader falls to earth, forms itself into a man and begins learning about our world. We learn it feeds off the dead to live, to grow stronger.
C. Secret: We, the audience, are not told why the Necromancers are coming to earth to wage war. Their end game (enslave man, breed humans for consumption) remains a mystery.
D. Investigation: Caleb, along with his ‘Riders,’ Charles, and the ‘Council of Elders’ figure out how to stop, or at least defend against the Necromancers attack.
E. Who-What-When-Where-Why and How:
WHO – the Necromancers are the byproduct of mankind’s negative emotions, banished to end of universe.
WHAT – Millions of negative/evil emotions have been trapped and evolving in banishment. WHEN – Council of Elders banished them eons ago.
WHERE – From Shangra La to the end of the universe.
HOW – they were freed by Danyak, an Immortal who wants to rule over earth.
F. Part Withheld: What we don’t know is what creates the mystery:
Shangra-La, a world coexisting with earth, a realm created by mankind’s spent emotions. A place where art, magic and music exist, there’s no machinery, no technology of any kind is responsible for the Necromancers.
G. Missing before final episodes:
WHY: It turns out the Necromancers are coming to earth to exact revenge for their banishment.
WHO: Council of Elders banished the Necromancers to the confines of deep space.
HOW: How were the Necromancers freed? (IDEA) Danyak put the initial rip in the fabric of time. He plans to use the Necromancers to defeat the humans. Once they’ve been defeated, he will eradicate the Necromancers using the ‘souls’ of the humans/crossovers he has been collecting thanks to the Feeders.
H. Ultimate Reveal: The Protagonist (Caleb) and his Riders discover a way to defeat the Necromancers.
I. Ultimate Reveal 2: We learn it was Danyak who set the Necromancers free!!
NOTE: We have the (1) Feeders, emotional vampires who have come to earth from Shangra La to form their own society; (2) Necromancers are returning to Earth to exact revenge upon Shangra La. Specifically, the Council of Elders for their banishment. Their end game is to enslave humans, breed them for food.
*Both of these evil entities are the end-product of man’s evil thoughts and emotions.

Darlene tells Elliot they have to protect each other from the men.
Darlene searches for a secret compartment in the house and removes a gun.
Elliot compiles many discs and keeps them in a bag.
Angela tells Elliot a guy blackmailed them with the hard drives.
Wellick and Mr. Robot are allies.
Wellick is disturbed and will not speak to the Police.
Elliot has 50 hours and 19 minutes at his disposal.
Mysteries type 2:
Elliot tells Darlene they are taking down the Evil Corp.
Elliot kisses Darlene who is angry and asked him to reveal who she is.
Darlene is Elliot’s sister.
Darlene noticed two men following her on the train and overhear them saying ‘tell him to follow the proper command and the sequence will initiate.
Elliot’s father is Mr. Robot.
Mr. Robot comes to Elliot’s house to talk.

What I learned doing this assignment is that the mystery is a big picture question affecting every character and driving their behavior and audience engagement. I want to spend more time on this.
ASSIGNMENT 1: GoT, epi 8

Shocking Event: The King’s infant son is kidnapped; guards and nanny’s alike are brutally murdered
B. Secret: Who would want to kidnap the crown prince? How would they gain access to him within the well-guarded palace fort?
C. Investigation:
Who: Crown prince
What: Kidnapped (not killed)
When: He’s 1 year-old
Where: Heavily armed Palace Fort
Part Withheld:
Why: Why did this happen? There are a number of enemies and a number of motives to choose from. Was it simply for ransom? Was it Rajendra, the exiled cousin, who was King Abzar’s successor before he remarried and had a son? Was this a Mughal plot to gain control of lucrative trade through Golden City? Or a trade partner — Portugal, China?
How: This is an embarrassment for King Abzar’s loyal general, Veer. In addition to his faithful guards, he also has a superior network of spies. This is an inside job. Some whisper that the general, himself, must be involved and if they knew his secret, he would be condemned.
2. Create the Over Time Mystery and tell us the WWWWW and H, along with the part withheld.
A. Cover up: The kidnapping was only a diversion — precious gems and many scrolls were stolen while they scrabbled to recover the infant
B. Secret: What were the kidnappers really after that they would risk doing something so drastic
C. Reveals: Rajendra, though exiled, may be involved. Anala, though family member and the king’s confident, may have an unintentional connection to what happened; Veer wants to tell King Abzar his secret — but if he does it now, it will make him look like a suspect

What — what were they after in the king’s documents, that prompted this drastic measure; why did the caught kidnapper commit suicide
When: Mughal Empire, circa 1567; the infant crown prince is one-year old. Just after Vanhi finally consents to allow Charita to marry Jagger.

Wayne’s Show Mysteries
What I learned doing this assignment is how to ensure I have integrated and overlapped layers of mysteries on every scale throughout my TV the series.
ASSIGNMENT 1: My example show is “LOST”.
The big inciting incident mystery is “What happened to the airliner?” The way it was torn apart by turbulence is bazar, and how so many people managed to survive the crash is also rather inexplicable. However, as we progress through this episode 6, we learn that there are mystical powers at play on the island.
Other more immediate mysteries include: What is the monster that crashes through the rain forest and killed the pilot? How did a polar bear get on the island? What did Kate do to get arrested in Australia? How did Locke become able to walk, and strongly at that? What happened between Jack and his Dad? What happened to the people who’d been there before? What did Jin-Soo Kwon do for Sun-Hwa’s father? There are many more mysteries that have only been touched upon. Then there is the overall mystic mystery considering the “magic of the island” as Locke seems to have discovered, “This island gives you what you’re looking for, but you must give the island something.”ASSIGNMENT 2:
1. A Shocking Event Mystery:
Mike is a family-oriented man who wants to have a family of his own when he returns to earth. As he is transitioning out of suspended animation, and in the dream state, he dreams of returning from the mission, marrying Samantha, and having twins with her.
• A. Shocking Event: A meteor strikes the transfer valve of Mike’s spaceship, making return to earth impossible.
• B. Secret: Mike and his sister’s best friend, Samantha, had secretly planned on marrying upon his return to Earth 13-years after his leaving on this historic mission.
• C. Investigation: We see them together as Mike imagines their future raising a family in his dream as he’s coming out of suspended animation.
• When: Mike’s ship is entering orbit around the closest inhabited planet to Earth (6.2 light years) where his mission is to observe, learn their language, and if possible/appropriate, communicate with the inhabitants.
• What: A meteor (act of God) changes Mike’s mission from exploration to survival.
• Where: On a planet in another solar system 6.2 lightyears from earth.
• Why: As a US astronaut, Mike is on an exploration mission. After the meteor strike his mission changes to simply survival and eventually adapt to the planet’s society and individual humanoids.
• How: Mike is saved by a single mother humanoid who has been exiled from her society for having a child out of wedlock (forbidden on her planet). She and her betrothed belonged to a rebel group of “Believers in Logard (God)”. Her betrothed was killed in a government raid on a secret meeting.
• Part Withheld: Desae believes that Logard (God) sent Mike to her in answer to her payers for a helpmate. Mike finds Desae extremely interesting (yet funny looking). This curiosity into humanoid differences and similarities especially in feelings draws him to her.2. An Over Time Mystery:
Yards (Desae’s only friend and eccentric neighbor) is married to Bendal who appears to be a dullard who doesn’t seem moved by anything. In reality, he had been the leader of the security force who had raided the meeting where Desae’s betrothed was killed.
• A. Cover up: Bendal retired from the security force after the raid, feeling guilty for killing such peaceful loving Romalians. He felt responsible for the innocent and Desae’s situation. So Bendal bought a farm on the edge of civilization. Desae did not know who he’d been. He loaned Desae some of the land to work and pay for over time with produce he could sell along with his own. Desae retained one friend, Yardas, who had been part of the believer group, thus Yardas met Bendal who married her but could not give her children.
• B. Secret: Bendal was the one who actually killed Desae’s betrothed.
• C. Reveals: Over time we see that the authorities seem to know Bendal. Eventually we realize he used to be one of them. Ultimately in a situation that would be easy for Bendal to betray Mike and Desae, he risks himself to keep them secret.
• Who: Bendal, Yardas’ husband.
• What: He was a security officer who had killed Desae’s betrothed.
• Where: The farm next to Desae’s farm.
• Why: Seeing the loving innocents of “the believers,” Bendal becomes very guilty and decides to take early retirement and become a farmer and secretly help Desae any way he can.
• How: He buys a farm on the edge of civilization where Desae would be allowed to live and loans her land to farm and purchase over time.
• Part Withheld: That he has great respect for Desae and married Yardas to keep an eye on Desae and help her through Yardas. The relationship can be teased many ways until the final reveal.
