Posted by cheryl croasmun on May 24, 2021 at 4:47 amHi everyone,
I’m glad you’ve joined us for the class.
To start the class out, please introduce yourself below. That will give you a chance to be part of this group and learn how the forums work.
Tell us the following:
1. Name?
2. How many scripts you’ve written?
3. What you hope to get out of the class?
4. Something unique, special, strange or unusual about you?
IMPORTANT: To post your answers to these questions, look above the post and click the black “Reply to this topic” button.
You can also find a “Reply to this post” text box beneath the post, where you can type in a response and click the black “Post” button. Either method works.

Hi everyone!
Sherri D. Coffee
I have written several “draft” scripts but definitely not “binge-worthy” material.
I am located in Atlanta, GA. My unique career requires me to be very knowledgeable in news stories so my appreciation for series shows is very high!
Look forward to the learning experience and hope to move my project forward.
Many thanks,
Sherri

I’m tom.
I’ve done three feature scripts at this point, a few shorter ones.
I have done features up to now and want to learn how to transition to a TV model.
Something unique? 50 years of martial arts? Tai Chi, Aikido, Karate, Wrestling, Boxing.

Hello. My name is David. I am in NYC. I am a Sag-Aftra Actor and I work on TV and Movie sets in many different capacities every week. It is a really great industry and I want to expand my role in the entertainment business. Like many people, I have my ideas and themes for scripts. But taking an idea and actually making it a story, with character development, world-building and production value is easier said than done.
I this is my 3rd SU class and I hope to continue building skills and a framework to create in and around.
Thanks for reading.
-
Hi David. What part of NY are you in? My wife and I lived in the West Village while she was getting her Master’s at NYU.

Barbara
I’ve written one full feature and a second feature is 50% complete.
I’m taking this course because I’d like to write more interesting layered characters and improve my plotlines. I’m also wondering whether I can build out my first or second feature as a TV show.
Not sure if this is unique or unusual, but I have a primary profession which is project and program management. When I’m not working on a project, I work as a background actor (UBCP/ACTRA). I enjoying being on set and part of that process. I love writing scripts in my spare time.
Over the years, I’ve attended several of Hal and Cheryl’s classes. Fall 2020 through early 2021, emboldened, I decided to rewrite of my first feature (which had placed in the QFs of the FreshVoices screenplay competition back in 2012). Last week, I found out my script placed in the QFs of the Inroads Fellowship Season 4 competition 2021 (by Filmmatic). Such feedback inspires me to continue writing.

Hello everyone,
My name is Marc Armstrong, I live in Las Vegas, am a CPA/consultant by day and am literally the least-experienced person in this room. I have written zero scripts so I may be taking a high school course without even having graduated from Kindergarten…but I am up for the challenge (anybody every get on an amusement park ride only to find out once you are strapped in that it is more of a thrill ride than you had hoped?). I hope to learn plot and character development, but in a Binge Worthy manner.
I was in the same Springfield, MO high school graduating class as Brad Pitt. Doesn’t do a thing for me, but it is a unique fun fact.
I look forward to learning from all of you.
Marc

1. Name?
Meg (Chiu) Stout
2. How many scripts you’ve written?
I wrote my first script in two weeks so a producer friend would have something (less-sucky than the script she had in hand from another writer) to provide a colleague to pitch in China to LionsGate. I’ve written most of a second script and am using screenwriting as a technique for drafting novels I’m writing (with the novels as PR for the screenplays and any films or TV-series as PR for the novels).
3. What you hope to get out of the class?
I agree that limited TV series are perfect for exploring complex topics, such as ones I wish to explore in novels. One of my novel series will be something like a cross between The Crown and Vikings/The Last Kingdom. Another series is a passion project for which I’m currently writing episodes for Vella. At any rate, I think these and other ideas would be great as limited mini-series, so I want to learn how to write and pitch to this new and emerging market.
4. Something unique, special, strange or unusual about you?
The GRU agent who was declared persona non grata at the beginning of the first Bush administration was entrapped by volunteer counter-espionage agent who subsequently wanted to marry me or, failing that, have sex with me or, failing that, have me use a push blade to kill him (all requests I refused).
Also I eat my cereal dry from a cup while quaffing intermittent sips of milk from a separate cup.

We were supposed to post our pre-work somewhere, so I figure here is as good a place as any. I’ve got three plot lines I’m working on during this course. I’m happy to post even more detail about each of these three stories, but this seems enough for me to “mark my territory” with respect to the group. I have filled out the pre-course work for each of these three stories elsewhere.
I) The Norman Queen is the first novel of likely a twelve novel arc tracing a fictive “curse” on the House of Wessex because of the regicide/fratricide committed to place Æthelred II on the throne. The land and his blood are to be cursed until “Alfred’s daughter’s son shall reign.” This happens when the two Matildas battle during the Anarchy, resulting in Henry II ascending to the throne. The Norman Queen describes the beginning of that curse, as Æthelred kills and terrorizes in an attempt to secure his throne, only to be defeated by King Sweyn of Denmark. Æthelred’s heir is defeated by Sweyn’s son, Knútr of Denmark. I was named Margaret because of Saint Margaret, my ancestor and the “Alfred’s daughter” of the fictive curse. My first screenplay, Pearl of Alba, was a feature film treatment of Margaret of Scotland. But when pitching to an industry person, it was suggested this would work better as a limited TV series. But to understand what I put forward as happening to Margaret, you need to understand why her father and uncle were murdered and why Harold Godwinson thought he could use Margaret to put an heir on the throne that had the blood of Wessex. It turns out Emma of Normandy has a possible history that is potentially even more engaging than what I assert happened to Margaret.
II) Children of Heaven is a series of stories I am writing for initial publication on Vella, giving a close historical fiction treatment of actual people involved in the 1840s events leading to and following from the death of Mormon founder, Joseph Smith. The first story is titled The Doctor’s Governess, which covers Dr. John Bennett’s arrival in the Mormon community, his rise to power, and his desire to marry a young woman (the Smith governess, Annie Cowles) even though Bennett’s estranged wife won’t divorce him. Doctor’s Governess ends when Annie learns Bennett is married and leaves to spend time with family, spiraling Bennett into an affair with Sarah Pratt, wife of a Mormon apostle (circa May 1841). In subsequent stories/series, we see the rise of a heresy where many believe it is appropriate to have sex outside marriage, then the conflict as Bennett is evicted from the community and attacks via the press while the community deals with the pregnancies resulting from the heresy. The great irony is that Joseph, after discovery of the illicit intercourse heresy, finally begins to restore the plural marriage aspect of biblical marriage, as he alleges he was commanded to do ten years earlier. This is what I referred to as my “passion project,” as this history is something I have researched heavily, including self-publishing a history (Reluctant Polygamist) addressing the huge body of evidence suggesting all popular interpretations of this history are in error. Aside from the drama of the story, there is a delicious amount of reviling and rejection of my position both on the part of those who hate Joseph Smith and those who defend “the Saints.” Annie Cowles is another ancestor.
III) Mr. Riley is a fictive but close treatment of the actual battle between myself and my father when I had to petition for guardianship and conservatorship because of his victimization by Ghanaian scammers. In real life, my siblings and I were finally able to get him under protective orders. But Dad is wicked smart and has been able to continue sending thousands of dollars of court ordered “discretionary funds” to the scammers, on top of the $1.2M he sent them before he was put under protection (not to mention upwards of $500K in fines and legal fees associated with his victimization and continued battle to evacuate protection). Meanwhile, he has disinherited most of us children, which is irritating since we have an evaluation stating he lacks testamentary capacity (but the Judge wouldn’t make a ruling to that effect while my father lives) and Dad has accumulated real estate holdings worth roughly $50M.

Hi all,
I’m Emmanuel from Houston.
I’ve written 3 scripts, two comedy/drama pilots and one feature. The pilots need a rewrite to make them binge-worthy.
Interesting background, I’ve lived all over the US, in 5 different cities in every region, except the midwest; it has been interesting learning the norms in each location.
Hope to apply what I learn to my new drama concept.
-
Hi folks,
I’m Joe
A little late to the party, but I’ve written seven scripts.
Very excited to be here. I took PS 26 and the Rewrite Class twice.
Something unique about me is that my parents met onstage in New York City in 1941, so I come from a somewhat crazy theatrical family.
Looking forward to watching our class succeed.
Kind regards,
Joe

Greetings everyone. I’m Jason, living in Northern California an hour between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe.
So far, I’ve written 10 feature scripts, written/directed 4 short films and a documentary, currently working on a limited series.
I’m hoping to apply the work to the serial medium, as some of my favorite viewing experiences of late have come from streaming series, and to develop the skill-set from concept to completion, ideas through bible/pitch deck. I’ve written a series bible before, but there’s a lot of room for improvement.
Star Wars corrupted me as a child; since then I’ve spent my life in the Arts. I’m also an actor/director/coach, dividing my time between stage and screen, in front of and behind the scenes. I’m finishing up the Paid Writing Assignments class with SU, and am looking forward to the next challenge. Also, I did martial arts for 20 years before a car accident damaged my L2-L4 vertebrae, but I still choreograph for stage and films–I just can’t get thrown around or leap about like I used to.
Looking forward to starting on Friday; I’ll be slightly behind, been playing catch up since the 2nd vaccination wiped me out for 9 days…woohoo!

Patricia Jan Ruland
One feature (terrible); one short (pretty good); one animated children’s feature (in progress). I am working on a serial for the MSC15 class, too.
I love trends–I am intrigued by the ascent of streaming programming in recent years. I want to write scripts that reflect this new and exciting development in the industry. I see unlimited potential there for screenwriters of every genre. This gives me a chance to invoke my Tinkerbell syndrome–in order to wish great success to each and every screenwriter out there.
I love to write poetry–I took a long break from that beloved avocation–but my son and his friend, both of whom are getting a doctorate in literature, are coaxing that passion out of me again. I am also a street photographer. I am combining the two disciplines in a book I want to self-publish. I love French poetry and the French photographer Brassai.
What is unique about me is that I am content to be always the apprentice, never the master, for I love learning, the journey of learning. It is my life.

Hi, everyone. I’m Chris.
I’ve written two feature-length scripts. I’ve only done a little series work on an assignment – writing a pilot and season outline for a series with episodes around 10 minutes long.
I have a project that I’ve been researching and developing as a feature, but lately I’ve been thinking a limited series might be a better way to tell the story and want to develop it in this class.
I’m from Southern California, but have lived in NYC, DC, and FL over the last couple years (mostly due to my wife’s grad school programs). We are moving back to CA in the fall.
My grandma was in a Coast Guard show with Sid Cesar and Victor Mature before working in Hollywood for 40 years (as a secretary/assistant to various producers) and my dad had small parts in shows/movies/commercials as a kid, but they were out of the business for decades before I started writing. My wife is a singer and actress who performed for Disney Cruise Line (and has a Master’s from NYU).
I made a deal with my MSC/Pro-Series script and have a couple other projects on the horizon as a result (one spec, one adaptation assignment). All have investors lined up, but are waiting for the funding to come through. I’ve also written a pitch deck for another feature project.
Nice to meet you all.
Chris

Hi everyone! My name is Donna Stockwell.
I wrote a Seinfeld episode, but didn’t take it personally when the closed the show after sending me my script back, unopened with a kind sorry-but-no-thanks letter. I started writing a couple of movie scripts, but just as Hal mentioned, I’m one of the writers who got writers block without a process. So, here I am!
I have ideas for 3 TV scripts and a couple of movies, and plan on finishing the first TV script by the end of class, and the next two with the same process within 6 months (or sooner) of that.
I am a Professional Engineer who rides motorbikes, flies airplanes, does some scuba diving, shoots guns, and occasionally you can find me on set of such shows as The Handmaid’s Tale, Umbrella Academy and Murdoch Mysteries, and various movies. Oh, and I’m also taking a movie/TV production program at the local college concurrent to this course. My mental recharge happens while walking my poodle.
-
Hi Donna,
Now I feel old as it has been 30 years since I road motorcycles, flew airplanes and got scuba certified. At least I still shoot guns (actually just received my CCW in the mail this past week), I suppose. Nice to meet you.

Hi, my name is John.
I have written dozens of scripts (shorts, TV, feature film). I have been a staff writer on TV and have had several films produced, optioned and/or sold.
I have been in and out of the entertainment industry for years as an actor, writer and director. I recently bought my first book that I wish to turn into a serial TV show. I have never done this type of adaptive writing before and also recognize that streaming channels are a different ball game to me. I’ve never taken a screenwriting class but Hal’s class sounds like the thing I need right now to get this book into a pitch (something I’ve never done for TV before). I also need to be able to work at odd hours.
My wife is also in the business as a 1st AD and a director. My son is in college with ZERO interest in this business. Perhaps it’s because we started him out acting as Charles Manson’s baby in the CBS movie ‘Helter Skelter?’

Hi! My name is Molly McNeal and I live in Walla Walla, WA. If you have never been here, I invite you to visit! It is really beautiful and the wine is amazing.
I am going to be honest, this is the first TV Script I have ever attempted to write. In fact, I don’t even have experience with a blog. But I do say my Christmas letters are EPIC. I may have signed up for this class after taking 1 too many prozacs, but I am really glad I did! I have a lot to learn, and I am excited to be in the midst of such talented people. I am a little slow at following a time line, I am a stay at home “domestic engineer” with 21 animals that include a 6 year old and 8 year old. I come from a family of writers, my mother is a published author and so is my grandmother. Luckily we are all extremely funny and I find it easy to write comedy.
During COVID I became obsessed with writing about my experiences in Skilled Nursing. At the time I felt my life was dreary and really quite horrible. But as most things in life I looked back and found the entertainment in what happened, that apparently I must share with the world. Now that I am half way through my life, I have decided if I am not enjoying every moment and everyday then I am doing it wrong. Enjoying writing is not something I ever thought I would say, but I am a creative person, and I crack myself up often. I love working with people so please do not hesitate to reach out at any point in time to say hello.
Something interesting about me, besides becoming an animal hoarder, and no I do not kiss my chickens and have successfully avoided all salmonella outbreaks. Although, my children may be making out with chicks behind my back but I am too busy writing in order to avoid housework to actually know.
Let’s see, I have lived in 4 states in the last 10 years, ( I am shocked to be writing this), and I am surprisingly still married. We also bought a POS house in COVID and I a managed to be the general contractor and fix it up! And I am still married.
I promise to not be the most intelligent writer here, but if I get a chuckle from myself or from you, I say it’s a good day. I also can’t promise that if you have MADE it this far that you will get any of this time back! Reading this over I see lot’s of run-ons’ and my spelling is horrible. Bare with me!
QUOTE OF THE DAY
“Procrastinating is like masturbation: it may feel good at the time, but in the end you are just screwing yourself.” (I found this quote in my 84 year old mom’s purse.)

Hi Molly,
I was just in Walla Walla a few weeks ago! What a beautiful place! Also, about 2 months ago we got 7 chickens and they, along with our dog, cat and bunny, are the light of our lives!!
I haven’t written anything for television either so we’ll be TV novices together.
All the best,
Jane
-
Hilarious Molly! I am the other newbie in the group and I am also associated with healthcare, albeit in finance as opposed to patient care. Love your sense of humor…I too have been kicking the comedy tires with some recent stand-up. So for either of us to bypass writing articles or books and jump right into writing a TV script is also EPIC. I’m glad you are here to bring some levity to the process.
-
I too have been kicking around stand up, everyone I meet says I should. Funny thing, I told my mother that everyone says I should be a stand up comedian, her response was, “I have heard that my hole life honey.” I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Finance is not very funny…… you are in the right place!

Hi everyone,
I’m Jane Turville and while I’ve written a number of film scripts, I’ve never written a script for television. So, I’m excited to be learning new methods of writing. My hope is that by the end of 2021 I have a manager and/or agent and have made some sort of deal with a producer. I’m not sure if that will be with the work I do in the course or if it will be with film scripts. One script that I completed in a previous ScreenwritingU course is out to a couple of producers so I have fingers and toes crossed!
Nothing too unique about me. I own my own film production company and do videos and educational films for nonprofits and for-profit companies. It’s fun but I’m getting too old to carry all my camera equipment around!!!
Looking forward to connecting with all of you on our projects. Onward and upward!!!
-
Hi,
My name is Ben.
I’ve written 7 features and 3 TV show pilots.
I hope to dramatically improve my writing.
I live in Australia, which may be unique in this class(?).
Looking forward to the class and working with you all.
-
Hey everyone,
My name’s Lance.
I have written about half a dozen short stories and maybe 5 aborted drafts of a novel. I have come to this class to turn my most recent draft into either a saleable novel, or a potential bingeworthy series. I was warned early on that Game of Thrones was going nowhere, but still love analyzing that show, since it has many great lessons for what to do and what not to do as a writer, which I hope to apply more in depth here.
-
Hello everyone : )
My name is Sean Barrett
I have written one script and will be turning it into a Pilot and a Binge Worthy Show!
I currently live in southern Arizona, though I am from the Philadelphia, PA area.
I served in the US Marines, slept in a building being renovated on Hollywood Blvd. years back just for the experience and I have performed my songs on the streets of Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Hollywood, New Orleans and Nashville. I have graced a few stages as well : )
look forward to meeting you all and reading some amazing stuff if the class allows at some point!
Blessed Be and thanks.
Sean

Hello, I’m Stuart. I’ve written about a dozen projects (specs for film/TV, marketing campaigns, plays, two books). I have several television series concepts in various stages of development, and frankly a bit stalled, and so I’m eager to dive into this Binge Worthy TV Bootcamp to target the one I’m most passionate about to write and to experience as an audience member. My secondary goal is to allow this experience (with lessons/techniques learned, and confidence to write faster) to open the creative floodgate to get the other series moving forward.
Interesting or unique…? I was a collegiate fencer (a southpaw sabre fencer), and I always appreciate a great cinematic fight sequence (regardless of weapon).
I’m very excited to share, learn, and grow with you over the next months.

Hi there and greetings from Amsterdam,
My name is Camilla Erlandsdotter. I’ve got one script to my name (a TV pilot). I’m looking to pick up more know-how on structure as well as the commercial side of being a writer. I’m quite a brainy person with four university degrees to my name (three of them in law). And no – I do not like the court room drama very much — since I stopped working at a Court, I haven’t set my foot inside one. That’s the good thing with doing business law.
Regards,
Camilla Erlandsdotter
-
Hi Everyone!
I’m playing catch up here, but since I ran cross country, I know how to pace myself.
I’ve written numerous scripts.
I need to not only write the series idea that haunts me, but I need to make the series binge-worthy.
If nothing else, I’m determined so I’ll catch up to the group soon.
-
Hi All,
I’m Barbara, worked in the television industry a long time, some of it early on was commercial, the rest public TV. I wrote a bunch of things for broadcast (more in the public tv arena) and publication, but never a full dramatic series. This course came up at a rather interesting time for me and I took it as a sign that I should be here – so here I am.
I have taken quite a few of Hal’s courses and can’t say enough good things about the quality of classes offered at ScreenwritingU – and the people.
Had some computer issues, so I’m playing catch up these next few days. Looking forward to going on this journey with all of you.
Cheers!

Hi everyone. I am really late for this party, I’m afraid, but here I am. I live in southern CA, south of Los Angeles and north of San Diego. My “day job” is hospital-based pediatrics but my real and round-the-clock jobs include being a mother, primary caregiver, and eternal student. I aspire to write, rescue animals, incorporate more yoga into my life, and be the best mom I can be.
I have never completed a script, so Marc I am totally in that kindergarten class with you. I have lots of ideas that I shoot down before even putting pen to paper. I am looking for a supportive group, some accountability, and an opportunity to maybe create something I can be proud of.
According to my sons, there are lots of strange things about me. I guess the strangest to me is that I grew up around music and entertainment and ended up in medicine and have been trying to return to my roots ever since.

Hello Kari…love your intro. I, too, am in healthcare, albeit as a consultant working for a CPA firm. I am excited to see your new creation!

1. Name Jamie Handley
2. How many scripts you’ve written 6, and how many are still in rewrite….6
3. What you hope to get out of the class? I think this class has much for us to learn from. I’m a crazy binging person for certain. In fact I’m kind of spoiled by it. If I like it, I’M ALL IN. I think my first binge was Entourage.
4. Something unique, special, strange or unusual about you? Persistence. I’m in MSC 15 presently and I had to drop out of this class 2 other times because life happened and I had to make big choices like; my mother was dying, how should I spend my time? I have no regrets with decision to pull out but by God I’m doing it now. Then I saw the intro to this class and well…..couldn’t pass it up. I might be a wee bit late at the moment but I’ll catch up. I love how Hal teaches and I’ve been in a lot of famous and great classes. This is outstanding. Just follow his lead. And, of course do the work. Catch up soon….BTW, I live in Arizona but am a California native. Most of my life was in California but then the cowgirl in me wanted to go and explore. On to Nevada, Montana and Oregon. Loved it but I got into a horrific accident and I can’t be in the cold anymore. So I call Arizona where I live, for now, and I am grateful. Miss the greenery, hills, quiet etc. but ya do what ya gotta do. And here I am, taking yet another one of Hal’s many classes.

I’ve written one stage play and choreographed many dances.
I hope mostly to learn to market from this class. What good are scripts without an audience?

Hello all,
My name is Lisa M. Mangan.
I have written and co-written 4 stage plays but no scripts as of yet.
I hope to complete this course as I took it last year when I didn’t realize I was dealing with COVID long haulers and the fatigue and brain fog kicked my backside. In addition to completing the course, I am looking forward to the entire process of developing my concept and watching it become a reality.
Something unique about me is that I grew up as a military brat and attended 14 different schools by the time I graduated high school.
Have fun, everyone!
Cheers to creating,
Lisa

Hi Everyone,
I’m waaay behind here and trying to catch up. We’ll see if I can do it sooner rather than later.
1. Lilliana Cabal
2. I’ve never written a script before, so this is very new to me.
3. I’ve had this tv series in mind for about 18 years now and was looking for a way to finally get it on paper in some orderly and engaging way. I was looking for something that would take me step by step in the process as I’ve never written a script before. I’d met with someone who took me through the steps of getting a bible together and felt terribly overwhelmed afterwards. So my hope is to have a central operating system and an easy to follow program in order to create a substantial outline and have a pilot written out. I would then like to pitch it and get professional writers to clean it up properly.
4. I’m an American actress now living in Barcelona. I took a break from acting to rethink what and how I wanted to do things. I ended up traveling around the world with a life and work experience which introduced me to a whole new industry which pushed many ethical boundaries and had me deal with a sub world of international politics and corruption. It changed my perspective of how global politics and business operate. It also invited me to reflect on the roles and power that we have as women in our day-to-day and as professionals and how that has changed in the past 20 years. This forms a significant part of the story I would like to share.
I’m already fascinated at the process you are sharing with us and am delighted to form a part of this group, made-up of folks who are experienced writers, certainly there’s a lot to learn from. Hopefully I can offer another perspective and support in return.
Cheers!
Lilliana

1. Jónelle Berment
2. How many scripts you’ve written? 1 feature (in pre-production) and one idea for TV 🙂
3. What you hope to get out of the class? I hope to create a binge worthy show
4. Something unique, special, strange or unusual about you? I completely was lost on this class and writing things in a notebook *facepalm* but I am very new to LA

Hi. I’m Norene Smiley. I am a writer, visual artist and sometimes filmmaker living in a small village in Nova Scotia, Canada. I have written one full-length script, three scripts for shorts, which I produced, and two picture books. I hope to use the structure and process of the course to concentrate on finishing/refining a middle-grade novel that I have been working on far too long. I am a sucker for pratfalls, unexpected moments and quirky sidekicks.
-
Hi! I’m extremely late to this party. Sorry about that!
1. Name? MARY JANE
2. How many scripts you’ve written? TWO. ONE WAS A PLAY. IT WAS THE LAST SHOW ON AT THE KENNEDY CENTER LAST YEAR.
3. What you hope to get out of the class? BEING ABLE TO SCORE A DEAL WITH FOX 21!
4. Something unique, special, strange or unusual about you? ITS TRUE THAT I HAD FALSE TEETH FOR SOME YEARS. I’M JUST GOING TO LEAVE THAT THERE AND WALK AWAY..

Hi everyone,
I’m Margie McRae, live in Atlanta, Georgia. I have written one full length screenplay and one television pilot and am currently at work on a second television pilot. I have taken several screenwriting classes with Max Adams, Scott Meyers, and Tom Benedek. Looking forward to developing as a writer and completing a Bingeworthy television pilot.
