    JAYE’S ACT 2 MIDDLE SCENES

    What I learned is that it’s important to follow a structure and it’s important to constantly remind myself that this is a first draft and to just keep moving forward!

    Key Scene(s) 2: Protagonist takes on a plan and executes it.
    I have included two back-to-back scenes here that emphasize following a new plan and failing.
    1. The first, Hero has agreed to work with Villain to try and teach each other their powers after they got switched when they were struck by lightning in the middle of a battle.
    2. The Mayor and Scientist are trying to recreate the event, in an attempt to have the powers switched back to their original owners.

    EXT. THE LAKE – DAY

    Hero and Villain in a remote area, standing at the water’s edge.

    VILLAIN
    Just put your head under and
    breathe.

    HERO
    Bullshit.

    VILLAIN
    I swear, that’s all I do.

    Hero reluctantly undresses down to his boxer briefs. He steps
    carefully into the water.

    HERO
    Don’t you walk on this?

    VILLAIN
    One thing at a time.

    Hero takes another step.

    VILLAIN
    Get in there!

    Hero hesitates. Villain puts the pieces together.

    VILLAIN
    Oh. My. God.
    (beat)
    You can’t swim.

    HERO
    I don’t need to swim. I can fly.

    VILLAIN
    No you can’t.

    Hero takes a step.

    VILLAIN
    But if you can’t swim, what
    was that shit you were doing
    last night?

    HERO
    Flying. I flew into the water,
    (swoops a hand downward)
    and I flew out of the water.
    (swoops a hand upward)

    VILLAIN
    Oh…
    (beat)
    Well then just get on your
    hands and knees and put
    your face in it.

    Hero crouches down. Reluctant. He sees his fearful face in the
    reflection. He can’t look himself in the eyes.

    He slowly brings his face closer. He stares at the rocky floor of
    the lake, his nose inches away from the surface of the water.

    Villain kneels beside him and slaps his hand on the back of
    Hero’s head, shoving his face under.

    Hero flails and comes back up, water sputters from his lips.

    HERO
    The fuck!?

    VILLAIN
    No swimming required!

    HERO
    Don’t push me!

    VILLAIN
    Then put your head in there
    and breathe!

    Hero forces his face back under. A second later he lifts
    his head and projectile vomits lake water and tadpoles.

    He gags, chokes, and coughs.

    VILLAIN
    Again!

    HERO
    Fuck you, “again”! I can’t do it!

    VILLAIN
    You try once and quit?

    Hero gets up in Villain’s face.

    HERO
    I can’t breathe under water!
    I’m not sure how many tries I’m
    allowed!

    Hero stands and Villain follows suit. Hero pushes him in the chest.
    Villain stumbles.

    HERO
    How ‘bout we try flying?

    Another push.

    HERO
    Just put your hands out and
    jump!

    Another push. Villain falls into the water.

    HERO
    Is that all you got?

    Hero points to the hills.

    HERO
    Or how ‘bout we go to the hilltop
    and I fucking push. you. off?!

    Villain puts his hands up.

    VILLAIN
    I’m sorry. I was just trying to help.

    Hero breathes… collects himself.

    HERO
    Then tell me how to do it.

    Villain is at a loss for words.

    VILLAIN
    I just… put my head under and
    breathe.

    Hero grits his teeth and rubs his forehead. Not the answer he
    wanted. He crouches down again.

    VILLAIN
    How do you fly?

    HERO
    I just… raise my fist to the sky,
    and I will myself to fly.

    Villain, still on his ass, leans in closer.

    VILLAIN
    It’s the same thing. Just will
    yourself to breathe.

    Hero looks back at the water. Hovers his face over the surface.

    Hero turns his head to Villain.

    HERO
    And don’t piss in here.

    Villain looks away. Hero’s order has come too late.

    Hero lowers his head. Villain watches, hopeful.

    Hero shoots back up, gasping, coughing, choking.

    From the shore, Hero’s utility belt plays GOD BLESS AMERICA.

    EXT. WHITE THREE-STORY BUILDING – DAY

    A sign in front reads: ADVANCED SCIENCE INSTITUTE.

    People file in and out of the entrance.

    MAYOR (V.O.)
    We think we can replicate what happened last night.


    INT. LAB – DAY

    Hero and Villain lean against a counter in a sterile white room.
    Mayor stands with SCIENTIST (60s), a seasoned nerd, glasses, timid,
    probably has a KICK ME sign on his back. Both men wear dark
    goggles on top of their heads.

    To the Scientist’s left are three over-sized, clear chambers.

    Scientist opens the door to the chamber closest to him.

    SCIENTIST
    Just step inside.

    Hero makes the first move. Steps inside the chamber with ease. He
    waits as Villain watches.

    Hero holds out a hand. Come on.

    Villain pushes himself away from the counter and steps inside the
    chamber. Scientist closes the door; latches it.

    Scientist walks to a panel with a giant pull-down lever. He presses
    some buttons as Mayor watches beside him. Both men goggles over
    their eyes.

    Hero and Villain stand face to face.

    VILLAIN
    Are you going to tell us–

    Scientist pulls down the lever.

    LIGHTNING fills the chamber and Hero and Villain quake as the bolt
    jars the shit out of them.

    Scientist pushes the lever back.

    Lighting stops and Hero’s and Villain’s knees buckle.

    Goggles up. Mayor opens the chamber door, releasing a light gray
    smoke.

    Hero and Villain groan.
    SCIENTIST
    (eager)
    Did it work?

    Hero pulls himself up. He holds out a hand to Villain and helps him
    stand.

    Hero stares at a beaker on the counter. Beams shoot from his eyes
    and the beaker explodes on impact.

    Hero and Villain drop their heads back.

    MAYOR
    I guess it wasn’t the lightning.

    Villain lifts his head.

    VILLAIN
    Wait! We were holding each other!

    Mayor raises an eyebrow.

    Hero raises his head. Of course!

    Hero and Villain start to embrace. It’s awkward.

    HERO
    No your arm was around my
    shoulder.

    Mayor and Scientist exchange looks.

    HERO
    My arm was around your waist.

    VILLAIN
    What was my other arm doing?

    HERO
    And bring your leg in.

    Mayor and Scientist look back at the intertwined Supers.

    VILLAIN
    Okay, we’re ready.

    Mayor latches the door shut. Takes his place by Scientist. Goggles
    down.

    Scientist pushes buttons; pulls the lever.

    LIGHTING saturates the two Supers as they hang onto each other.

    Lever and goggles back up.

    Mayor opens the door. Hero and Villain are crumpled against the
    wall of the chamber in each other’s arms.

    SCIENTIST
    (more eager)
    Did it work?

    The Supers groan and sigh as they help each other up.

    Villain raises a hand in front of Hero’s face.

    VILLAIN
    I’ll try.

    Villain stares at Mayor, who jumps out of the way.

    MAYOR
    Not me!

    Hero points to a cabinet.

    VILLAIN
    It doesn’t work. I already saw his
    breakfast.

    Villain stands alert.

    VILLAIN
    Wait! It was raining!

    LATER

    Hero and Villain sit on stainless steel barstools.

    Mayor and Scientist work to fit a hose and sprinkler to the top
    of the chamber.

    HERO
    Your turn.

    VILLAIN
    I spy… something… old.

    HERO
    Mayor.

    Mayor looks at Hero.

    VILLAIN
    Older.

    MAYOR
    Ooh, I know, I know.

    Scientist looks at Mayor.

    SCIENTIST
    Alright. It’s ready.

    Hero and Villain return to the chamber, wrapping their bodies
    together.
    Mayor closes the chamber door.

    HERO
    Hold me tighter.

    Mayor latches the door and switches on the hose. Water showers
    the men in a steady downpour as Mayor takes his place by Scientist.
    Goggles down.

    Scientist reaches for the lever. Presses buttons. Mayor holds out a
    hand to stop him.
    Mayor asks a silent question with his eyes and Scientist nods. They
    switch places. Mayor pulls the lever.

    LIGHTNING fills the chamber, relentless and thoroughly.

    Lever and goggles up.

    Mayor opens the door. Hero points to Scientist as his knees buckle.

    HERO
    Don’t say it.

    He rests his head on Villain’s shoulder. Villain’s head is already resting
    against Hero’s chest.

    SCIENTIST
    (less eager)
    Did it work?

    VILLAIN
    (to Hero)
    Fucking had to say it.

    A loud wet fart echoes through the chamber. Hero and Villain share a
    look.
    Hero looks at Mayor and Scientist. Defeated.

    HERO
    Didn’t work.

    Scientist drops his shoulders.

    MAYOR
    What else can we put in there?
    You were on a building. You were
    fighting! Try it again… fighting!

    HERO
    No! No more!

    He drops his head back to Villain’s shoulder.

    HERO
    (to Villain)
    Bro, it still stinks though.

    VILLAIN
    Don’t try to make me feel better.


    Key Scene 3:
    Not only does their plan fail, but…

    Hero starts turning into a bad guy…
    In this scene, Hero has just been dumped by his girlfriend and he’s mad as hell…

    INT. HERO’S PENTHOUSE – NIGHT

    Villain watches the news. LCM logo in the bottom corner of the
    screen.

    A pizza box, a six pack of beer minus two, and Villain’s feet are on
    the coffee table. Two empty beer bottles next to him on the couch.

    NEWS ANCHOR
    Occupants of the apartment and
    surrounding area were evacuated
    for six hours until the gas leak was
    repaired.

    VILLAIN
    Here’s your gas leak.

    He lifts his right butt cheek and pushes. Nothing happens.

    NEWS ANCHOR
    Another local citizen, Mr.–

    Villain grunts in disappointment.

    VILLAIN
    Pathetic.

    NEWS ANCHOR
    –who was last seen riding his
    bicycle near the College.

    Villain grabs another beer and cracks it open as a graphic of the
    bearded hipster appears above the News Anchor’s right shoulder.
    The same man from the lobby of the Mayor’s office.

    NEWS ANCHOR
    Any information regarding–

    Hero bursts in the front door, furious. Villain isn’t fazed.

    VILLAIN
    Aww.. she said no. Chin up,
    buddy.

    HERO
    She broke up with me. Get
    your fuckin’ feet off the table.

    VILLAIN
    Whoa, relax! I didn’t break up
    with you.

    Villain puts his feet on the floor. Hero pulls the velvet ring box
    from his pocket. He throws it into…

    HIS BEDROOM

    The box bounces once and pops open. A second bounce under
    the bed expels the ring.

    The box bounces two more times, and
    the ring slides into an air vent near the foot of the bed.

    BACK TO THE LIVING ROOM

    VILLAIN
    Grab a beer. Sit down.

    HERO
    I wanna kill somebody right
    now!

    Villain stands, pumped. Turns off the TV with the remote. He
    punches his hand into his fist.

    VILLAIN
    Let’s do it!

    Hero spots empty beer bottles on the couch. And a beer stain.

    HERO
    You.
    (he growls)
    I wanna kill you right now.

    Hero charges and Villain jumps to the side.

    VILLAIN
    Truce!

    Hero dives and knocks Villain down. Punches him hard across the
    face.

    VILLAIN
    Listen, I know you’re hurting.

    Villain shakes his head.

    VILLAIN
    Fuck, I wanna hit myself!

    He forces inner rage and punches Hero back. Lifts a knee and jams
    it into Hero’s balls. Hero winces and Villain flips him on his back.

    He punches Hero, left and right, across the jaw and cheeks. A punch
    for every word:

    VILLAIN
    We. Have. A. Truce. You. Dick!

    Hero’s eyes grow red.

    VILLAIN
    Don’t you fucking dare.

    Hero holds his gaze and Villain jumps back, as BEAMS OF LIGHT burn
    two holes through the ceiling!

    He gets up and charges Villain again, knocking a lamp over. Villain
    ducks and blocks.

    But a roundhouse kick to the abdomen sends Villain through the front
    window!

    Villain grabs desperately at the window sill and barely holds on. Hero
    rests his foot on one of Villain’s hands, digging it into broken glass.

    VILLAIN
    If I fall, you don’t get shit back!

    HERO
    Why don’t you fly?

    VILLAIN
    I can’t fucking fly! That’s why I’m
    here, goddammit!

    HERO
    Thought it was the empathy.

    VILLAIN
    You wanna be the hero again?
    A hero doesn’t do this.

    Hero counts off on his fingers.

    HERO
    Respect. Adoration. Powers. Insane
    good looks. Girlfriend.
    (beat)
    I’ve already lost everything.

    Hero pushes his foot hard into Villain’s hand, kicking it off the sill.
    Villain reaches up again. But Hero’s already kicked his other hand off.

    VILLAIN
    Fuck–

    EXT. HERO’S PENTHOUSE – SAME

    Villain falls, gaining velocity.

    He turns his body, and puts his arms forward and concentrates.

    VILLAIN
    Come on come on come on…

    And SPLAT! Face first into the sidewalk, barely missing passersby.

    They scream and scatter.

    Sidewalk crumpled, Villain groans and slowly pushes himself upward,
    arms shaking like wet noodles.

    VILLAIN
    Asshole.

    He rolls over and looks up at the top of the building. Face bloody. Nose
    broken.

    Of course Hero is not visible on the 40th floor . Villain shouts up to the
    penthouse.

    VILLAIN
    ASS

    An empty BEER BOTTLE comes into view and hits Villain square in the
    face. His head drops back on the cement.

    He covers his face with his arms as another bottle sails toward him.

    Bernadette Wilson – Lesson 14 – Act 2 Middle Scenes
    What I learned in this lesson is that I’m solving the early problems in the script by inserting plot points as I go. The speed writing is fun. It’s inspiring new ideas and new justifications and new scenes for the protagonist and antagonist.
    Key # 3
    INT. BRINDA’S APARTMENT – NIGHT
    Brinda comes home and can’t wait to get out of the stupid outfit she’s got on. She feels as hopeless as ever. The plan of the cops did not work.
    She gets a phone call of a woman crying. The woman says to meet her at the automat. The doorbell buzzer rings.
    Brinda wants to know who is it? – It’s Cal.
    Cal enters. Wants to be sure she’s ok and that he’s sorry with what went down.
    Brinda tells him of the phone call. CAl says we can try to have it traced. What did it sound like. The voice – It sounded like a woman crying.
    He’s beginning to like her. But she is reluctant. She’s has very little faith in men who are interested in her. Except for Jesse who was her protector.
    He tells her his wife left him. Almost as if he becomes the patient.
    Brinda says there’s no shame in talking about who you are.
    Cal say, “so why don’t you?”
    Do they hatch a plan together or on her own. Why doesn’t she tell Cal about the phone call?

    TP:
    Cal wants Brinda to go into Dr. Sonya’s files and see if the killer is in there.
    Brinda says, that’s impossible. None of the patients that are part of the group are violent. None of them.
    Maybe some of the people of the hetero variety are but I did not interview them.
    Cal wants the files. Brinda can get them.
    She decides to do it herself and go to the automat. – With Maybelle.
    Maybelle goes with her

    KEY POINT #4
    After Brinda and Maybelle goes to the automat, something goes really wrong.
    Brinda goes to the automat. She sees Dr. Sonya there. Dr. Sonya puts a nickel in one of the slots and opens the slot.
    It is rigged. It shoots out some kind of liquid that goes right into her face.
    Brinda catches her in time. Maybelle goes over and helps Dr. Sonya. Brinda tells Maybelle to call the police. She tells someone to call the police.
    She then runs behind the counter at the automat. There is no one there but an old woman who is replacing the automat windows.
    She can’t find anyone. She runs out the back by the alley and sees someone running away. Does she take out her gun? Not yet.
    It looks like a woman with blonde hair.
    INT. HOSPITAL – NIGHT
    Dr. Sonya is healing in the bed.
    Her eyes and head are covered in bandages as she talks to Brinda.
    Dr. Sonya is happy to be alive. She’s happy she did not look all the way into the automat window otherwise she would have lost both of her eyes.
    Brinda finds out that Dr. Sonya was called to go there.
    Brinda asks, By who?
    Dr. Sonya – The crying woman.
    Brinda
    Do you know her?
    BRINDA
    She told me to meet there as well.
    Dr. Sonya is in pain and groggy.
    BRINDA
    Do you know her?
    DR. SONYA
    Please.
    BRINDA
    Why did she want me to see you hurt?
    DR. SONYA
    I can’t….
    BRINDA
    Please tell me.
    DR. SONYA
    She’s your…
    BRINDA
    Who is she?
    The power goes out in the hospital. When the lights come on,
    Sonya is either gone or almost dead.
    Need to keep her alive.
    INT. NYU – DR. SONYA’S OFFICE – DAY
    Brinda goes tracing through the files. She can’t seem to find anything that the police have not found.
    She gets another phone call from the crying woman that tells her to dig deeper.
    All hope is lost almost but then, she finds a secret file at the back of Sonyya’s desk.
    It’s a file of Brinda when she was at the mental institution with Jesse.
    TP:
    SHE THEN FINDS THE FILE ON HER MOTHER. WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO HER. HOW SHE WAS LOBOTOMIZED AND THEN DIED TRAGICALLY IN THE SAME MENTAL INSTITUTION THAT BRINDA ALMOST GOT LOBOTOMIZED IN.
    But Dr. Sonya stopped Brinda from being Lobotomized as well as Jesse. Why could Sonya not save Brinda’s mother?
    Is this person from the mental institution getting revenge?
    Did this person know Brinda’s Mother and why is she taking revenge now?
    Is it a man or a woman? Is it a Man dressed as a woman.
    INT. CAL’S DESK – POLICE DEPARTMENT – DAY
    CAL IS SITTING AT HIS DESK LOOKING AT AN EDITED VERSION OF THE FILE. BRINDA HAS KEPT ALOT FOR HERSELF.
    CAL
    HOW WOULD WE KNOW?
    BRINDA
    We have go up there and start asking some questions. Maybe there was a friend of my mother’s who was there, who knew and saw what happened to her.
    CAL
    Why would they want to take revenge now, so many years later.
    BRINDA
    Maybe they just got out. Trust me. They keep people in there longer than they should.
    CAL
    It doesn’t make sense.
    BRINDA
    It makes perfect sense. This person is protecting me. They’ve come after every person I know or love.
    CAL
    What?
    BRINDA
    Maybe they’re coming after me next.
    CAL
    They would have by now.
    BRINDA
    THe crying woman is talking to me.
    BRINDA
    She tells me where to go and then tries to kill my mentor in front of me? Is she threatening me or warning me?
    CAL
    We have to get a warrant.
    BRINDA
    She hasn’t come after any of my friends, just authority figures.
    CAL
    You mean…
    BRINDA
    People in power. Jesse was a person of power in my life. Dr. Sonya, The Attorney?
    CAL
    What about the other guy in the caberet.
    BRINDA
    I think that was just to get us off the scent.
    CAL
    Well, I’m out of ideas.
    BRINDA
    I think it’s the best we can do now.
    CAL
    Yup.
    PLACEHOLDER:
    BOSS puts a stop to going up there. That’s grabbing at straws.
    This is where maybe Brinda and Maybelle can look through the files and find something on Jesse and his father and the boss.
    Also find out what role the BOSS played in Brinda’s father’s death.
    How they were all in it together. That maybe Jesse’s father was having an affair with Mimi – Brinda’s mother and Jack found out about it.
    That Jesse’s father paid BOSS to bump off Jack Cage and made the BOSS the head honcho down at the police department.

    Assignment 14, N. Lucas

    What i learned was that i need to flesh out ow he can fail. I believe he will need to try to structure the wedding according to what would be a dignified , black tie affair that has a lot of class, with full – on pictures and fancy cake because that would be the best memory you would want for your wedding.

    As he tries to fight the tide of impulsive decisions all around— his plans keep failing because the groom is not helping in the wedding planning and everything is left to a last-minute decision. HIS DECISIONS. This is giving him a lot of anxiety. Chosing colors, chasing beach or banquet hall,

    Soon- the wedding dress will get lost – which leads for the opportunity for him to go along with the group to find the bride to be a new dress. this will be the opportunity to (impulsively) tell Isabella that she is beautiful (when she tries on a dress at the store (not a wedding dress)

    Karin Hallén’s Act 2 Middle Scenes

    What I learned doing this assignment is that I am still a bit uncertain as to which of my scenes belong in lesson 13 and which belong in today’s lesson, so I am re-posting the last scene I posted this morning in yesterday’s forum in today’s forum as well. I also learned that in order to move the story forward these middle scenes need to contribute to the story in ways that keep the story fresh, by adding surprises or more to the plot, move it forward and/or up the stakes.

    Outline Middle Key Scenes

    Beginning

    INT. CONVENTION, LECTURE HALL – DAY

    Plan in action

    George uses Geena to sit in as a sidekick at a lecture and to take payment for book sales, to appear rich and successful. Geena very reluctantly obeys. She looks bored.

    Middle

    In an attempt to wear George out so he’ll make his final wish, Geena deliberately s succeeds in sabotaging more than helping.

    End

    George holds out for the sake of the successful image of having an assistant.

    EXT. CITY – DAY

    Beginning

    Walking from Convention Center to an Uber pickup spot Geena, who carries all the leftover books confronts George about his flaws verbally and points them out to him bluntly. She shows him examples and challenges him. He is in denial and makes excuses. (Old ways still have a strong hold on him.) They argue.

    Middle

    INT. UBER – DAY

    Scene with Cab/Uber driver. Driving through the city. Geena and George in conflict. Geena is obnoxious to George, which the driver doesn’t hear. George threatens to lock Genie in the lamp and throw her at the bottom of the ocean. Driver hears this and is shocked. He immediately takes Geena’s side and threatens to call the Police. He thinks George is abusive to women and maybe a serial killer.

    End

    Geena moves up front in the car. There’s a brief hint of a flirt between them. George is left alone and left out in the backseat

    EXT TENNIS COURT 2 – DAY

    Beginning

    George and Geena play tennis furiously, looking like they want to kill each other. Geena is a much better player now and gives George a tough match.

    Middle

    After the game the encounter Brad Brighly and Nick. They ask abiout George’s tennis partner being a woman. George had mentioned him as a “he” before. George scrambles and says that he always thought fo her as masculine and then says that Geena used to be a man – she had a sex change. Brad and Nick embrace Geena and tell her how brave she is how much they admire her. They are a couple – not at all just full time tennis partner . Who on earth has time for a full time tennis partner if you have a career. That had just been joking about that to George. They thought he knew they were a couple. Brad and Nick enjoy Geena’s company. They chat and George is left out.

    End

    Leaving the tennis court at dusk, George yells at Geena. “I’m going out. Find your own way back to the hotel.” Or something to that extent.

    INT. BOOK STORE – NIGHT

    TRANSFORMATIONAL EVENT 4.

    Beginning

    George, still in tennis clothes wanders into a bookstore, wishing his book was on the shelves. He encounters Rebecca but doesn’t remember her. Rebecca looks for more books by the writer of the book she found in the “take for free” pile at the hotel she last stayed at (George’s book)

    Middle

    Rebecca tries to strike up a conversation but George is rude and in a bad mood, not listening enough to realize she is talking about his book.

    End

    George sees that an author setting up for a book signing in front of the store and a local reporter interviewing them. George blows Rebecca off and tries to get a word in with the reporter. He is shown the door.

    INT. HOTEL ROOM 2 – NIGHT

    Beginning

    Geena looks mighty pleased at for the first time being in the hotel room alone and still out of the lamp. She talks to the lamp. “Don’t you think I’m gonna go back in you any sooner than I have to. She explores everything. Microwave, mini bar, the TV with its remote control. She finds room service on the remote.

    Middle

    She orders tons of food. She is thoroughly enjoying herself. She finds the Golf channel and realizes what she wants to do with her life once she retires. Play golf in Florida! It’s her new goal!

    Geena orders food several times. The same waiter keeps delivering them Geena thinks he is a genie, because he keeps coming when she orders him. She asks him about it. He is confused. She winks at him and says his secret is safe with her. She also feels bad for him. She says she knows what it’s like to be ordered to fulfill everyones wishes and winks at him again. She invites him to share her food. She insists.

    End

    When George comes back he finds Geena and the room service waiter surrounded by everything room service has to offer spread out on the bed. They are watching golf. George freaks out at what the bill will be for all this. The waiter freaks out thinking George is Geena’s husband and insists they didn’t have sex. Geena is irked at the thought of George being her husband.

    Write middle scenes:

    INT. CONVENTION, LECTURE HALL – DAY

    Plan in action

    George speaks about his book at a seminar. Geena sits by a small table with books by the side of the entrance.

    GEORGE

    And when you’re ready to purchase the book my assistant Geena here is more than happy to help you.

    George emphasizes the word assistant.

    An ASIAN MAN walks up to the table where Geena sits. He looks at Geena’s name tag.

    ASIAN MAN

    Ms Woo? You don’t look like a Woo. Where are you from?

    GEENA

    Adopted.

    ASIAN MAN

    Oh, I’m sorry.

    GEENA

    For my name? Me too!

    The Asian man looks confused. He picks up a book.

    ASIAN MAN

    What are your thoughts on his book?

    GEENA

    Haven’t read it.

    ASIAN MAN

    You haven’t read it?

    GEENA

    Would you read a book by someone with his communication skills?

    The Asian Man reacts to her comment and puts the book back on the table. Only two other attendees were in line to buy the book and they also heard Geena’s comment. They leave the table mumbling to each other.

    ATTENDEE 1

    Makes sense.

    ATTENDEE 2

    Yeah, I’m gonna hold off.

    No books are sold. George and Geena are left alone in the room.

    GEORGE

    You haven’t read it! You haven’t read it!!

    GEENA

    I haven’t.

    GEORGE

    You are supposed to help me!! Not sabotage me. You are my assistant. Effing lie and say the book is great!

    GEENA

    I don’t lie.

    GEORGE

    You just said you were adopted!

    GEENA

    Which I in a way I am every time someone finds my lamp and rubs it. I’m kind of adopted until they’ve made three wishes.

    GEORGE

    Aaarrgh! What the f.. am I going to do?

    George paces angrily. Geena suddenly becomes very friendly.

    GEENA

    You could always ask for your last wish and be rid of me.

    George stops in his track.

    GEORGE

    Oh, oh, so that’s where you’re going? I should have known. Well, in your dreams, Ms. Woo. Not a chance until you help me for real. Like a real assistant. Pack up! Oh, and we’re playing tennis this afternoon.

    George storms out of the room. Geena sighs, tiredly.

    EXT. CONVENTION CENTER

    George and Geena walk towards an Uber pickup spot. Geena carries all the books. They bicker like an old married couple.

    GEENA

    Woo! What the heck kind of name is that? Sounds like half a dog bark.

    GEORGE

    You are from the Far East, aren’t you?

    GEENA

    Far East? Everything is East of here. The globe is round. Everything is East, everything is West. And if you ask most “Far” is an hour away.

    GEORGE

    You’re the most obnoxious person I’ve ever met.

    GEENA

    Good, so get rid of me.

    GEORGE

    Nah, it’s worth it. Having an assistant boosts my brand worth.

    An Uber pulls up and they get in.

    INT. UBER – DAY

    GEENA

    You know that maybe if you stopped lying about everything you would have real friends and not have to keep me prisoner to keep someone around.

    The UBER DRIVER, bearded, 50s, listens up at the word “prisoner.”

    GEORGE

    I don’t lie.

    GEENA

    You don’t? Everything you say about yourself at your lectures is fake.

    GEORGE

    Is not!

    GEENA

    Is too! You speak about loneliness and you don’t have any friends. Everything you warn people not to do are the things you do.

    GEORGE

    I have tons of friends.

    GEENA

    So call them to play tennis with you, then. Instead of forcing me.

    The Uber driver listens up again at “forcing me.” George looks flustered.

    GEORGE

    They have jobs. They can’t just leave town and come play with me.

    GEENA

    Right. And they can’t ever answer when you call either. Right?

    Geena reaches over and snatches George’s cell phone and opens it.

    GEORGE

    Stop! If you don’t stop I’m going to lock you in the lamp and throw you at the bottom of the ocean! And nobody will ever find you!

    The car comes to a screeching halt.

    UBER DRIVER

    That’s it, I’m calling the Police!

    GEORGE

    What?

    UBER DRIVER

    You are a wife abuser!

    GEORGE

    That’s not my wife, that’s my… tennis partner.

    UBER DRIVER

    I don’t care who she is you’re treating her like shit. For all I know you you’re a serial killer. Do you want me to call the Police Ma’am?

    Geena hesitates for a moment. George looks bewilder4ed and resigned. A hint of pity washes across Geena’s face.

    GEENA

    Nah, it’s alright. He has poor social skills. He doesn’t know better.

    UBER DRIVER

    You sure? At least move up here with me.

    Geena moves up front with the Uber Driver. They chat and quickly seem to get along greatly. They smile and glance at each other. There is no doubt that there is a bit of a flirt going on between them. They seem to have completely forgotten that George is in the backseat.

    EXT TENNIS COURT 2 – DAY

    George and Geena play tennis furiously, looking like they want to kill each other. Geena is a much better player now and gives George a tough match.

    After the game they run into Brad Brightly and Nick.

    BRAD

    Hey, George! Are you speaking at the wellness convention, too?

    GEORGE

    Yup. I wasn’t going to, but they called and begged me, so…

    BRAD

    Right. So who is this lovely lady?

    GEORGE

    Oh, this is my full time tennis partner, Geena.

    GEENA

    Hello. And thank you.

    Brad and Nick exchange a look.

    NICK

    I thought you called your tennis partner “he” before.

    George scrambles for an answer.

    GEORGE

    Well, look at her. I mean I always thought of her as masculine and…

    Brad and Nick give George an incredulous look.

    GEORGE

    Well, she used to be a man! She had a sex change.

    Geena looks shocked. Brad and Nick embrace her.

    NICK

    Omg, I’m so happy for you.

    BRAD

    That’s so brave. Being true to yourself no matter what the world says.

    GEENA

    Uumm, thank you.

    BRAD

    It took forever for us to come out publicly. You know with my career at stake and everything. But you have to be honest.

    GEORGE

    Come out? You? You mean you two…?

    BRAD

    Yeah, what did you think?

    NICK

    You didn’t really think I was just his full time tennis partner, did you?

    BRAD

    Of course, he didn’t. Hahaha, who’d have the time for that when you have a career…

    George loses his face.

    BRAD

    …omg, you did, didn’t you?

    There is an awkward silence.

    NICK

    Anyway, we should get going. Geena, it was so nice to meet you.

    Nick and Brad both hug Geena again.

    BRAD

    Yes, you are a true inspiration. Do you want to be a guest speaker at my seminar?

    GEORGE

    She doesn’t have time. She’s my assistant.

    BRAD

    Oh, of course, sure. Maybe another time then?

    George pulls Geena away before Brad has finished his sentence. When they have passed a corner he stops. He waves down a cab.

    GEORGE

    I can’t even stand seeing you for another cab ride right now. Find your own way back to the hotel. And your lamp. I’m going for a walk.

    George pays the cab driver through the window and gives him the address.

    GEORGE

    Just take her there and don’t stop anywhere else, no matter what she says.

    INT. BOOK STORE – NIGHT

    George, still in tennis clothes, wanders into a bookstore. He goes to the personal development/self-help section. He looks at the shelf where the books by writers whose last names start with W sit. He pushes books aside to make space where “Wa” (for Wallow) would be. He fantasizes.

    GEORGE’S FANTASY:

    The shelf is full of his books. People are crowding around him as he stands there, all reaching in front of him and around him to grab his book. They fight over it. A hurried SALES WOMAN appears with a cart containing more of his books.

    SALESWOMAN

    We just keep enough in stock. They just fly off the shelf as soon as we put them out.

    A crowd of excited people reach out and grab all the books straight from her cart. George hears a voice.

    REBECCA (O.S.)

    Excuse me. Sir.

    Still in his fantasy George imagines she is reaching for his book.

    GEORGE

    You’re too late.

    END GEORGE’S FANTASY

    REBECCA

    I’m what?

    George is jerked back to reality and spins around facing Rebecca.

    GEORGE

    What?

    REBECCA

    You! You’re the guy from the bar at the hotel in Baltimore.

    George looks confused.

    REBECCA

    With the sock. Oh, you probably don’t remember, you were so drunk. Me and the bartender helped you to your room. I hope you were ok the next day.

    GEORGE

    Umm, sure. Thanks.

    REBECCA

    You were really endearing actually, with your sock. What a coincidence that we meet here again. Judging from you standing in this section I’m assuming you might be in town for the health and wellness convention.

    George notices that an author is setting up for a book signing over by the entrance. He pays more attention to that than he does to Rebecca.

    GEORGE

    Uhh.

    REBECCA

    Hey, I’m looking for more books by a writer I just discovered by chance. I found this great book in the “take for free” pile at that hotel in Baltimore. It has some really profound insights on loneliness and there is so much pain in it. You can tell that the writer is trying to cover it up, like faking it but I think he’s doing that on purpose, to illustrate. Because it’s so transparent. And it really works. I want to use it with my clients.

    George notices that a local reporter enters the store and approaches the author setting up for the book signing. Rebecca tries to look behind George.

    REBECCA

    I wanted to see if he has written more. It should be right behind you. Have you ever heard of…

    GEORGE

    Excuse me.

    George quickly pushes past Rebecca and hurries towards the front of the store.

    REBECCA

    …George Wallow?

    George approaches the reporter at the front of the store.

    GEORGE

    How about you interview me while this guy is setting up?

    Rebecca, too far away to hear what is being said in the front of the store, sees the empty space on the shelf where George made room for the books he envisioned there.

    REBECCA

    (to self)

    Wa. Probably sold out.

    In the front of the store George gets into a fight with the store manager and the author who’s there for the book signing. The manager shows him the door.

    INT. HOTEL ROOM 2 – NIGHT

    Geena sits on the bed. She tests the springiness of it. She looks mighty pleased at for the first time being in a hotel room alone and out of the lamp. She lifts up the lamp and eyes it.

    GEENA

    Don’t you think I’m gonna go back into you, a minute before I have to!

    Geena explores everything. The microwave, the mini bar, the TV with its remote control. The TV perks her interest. She lays down on the bed and flips channels. She finds room service on the remote. She reads the instructions and the menu. She makes sounds of delight as she reads the food options.

    GEENA

    Oh. Aaah. Oh, that sounds so good. Let’s see, how do we do this.

    Geena figures out the remote and orders several dishes.

    A YOUNG NERDY WAITER knocks on the door and delivers the food on a cart.

    GEENA

    Thank You.

    YOUNG NERDY WAITER

    You’re welcome.

    The Young Nerdy Waiter waits for a second but when Geena doesn’t make any move to get up and tip him he leaves.

    Geena thoroughly enjoys herself. She eats and watches TV.

    She finds the Golf channel. She is mesmerized. It’s showing a gold tournament taking place at a beautiful resort in Florida.

    GEENA

    Oh, that’s amazing. Look at that grass. So green. It must belike heaven. Oh, look at that ball. It flies. That looks like so much fun!

    Geena is getting into the game more and more. She eats while watching and soon her plate is empty. She orders more food. The same Nerdy Young Waiter delivers it.

    GEENA

    Do you know where this is?

    YOUNG NERDY WAITER

    I believe it’s Florida, ma’am.

    GEENA

    Do you know what they are doing?

    YOUNG NERDY WAITER

    Playing golf.

    GEENA

    Golf? Golf. Golf. I like that sound. That’s what I want to do, right there, when I retire. Play golf in Florida.

    YOUNG NERDY WAITER

    What a novel idea.

    The Young Nerdy Waiter leaves. There is a commercial for a nice restaurant on the golf channel and they show a gorgeous dessert.

    GEENA

    Oooh!

    Geena finds the room service menu again and orders several desserts.

    The Young Nerdy Waiter soon appears again with a dessert cart. He hovers, still hoping for a tip.

    Suddenly Geena has a revelation. She looks startled.

    GEENA

    Omg, I don’t think about it I was so into this golf thing.

    The waiter looks relieved.

    YOUNG NERDY WAITER

    It’s ok. I’m still here now.

    GEENA

    I’m so sorry, I should have realized when you kept coming every time I ordered you to. I didn’t think. But I didn’t know that there were any more of us left in the world.

    YOUNG NERDY WAITER

    What?

    GEENA

    I didn’t realize you were a genie. I’m sorry. And I should have known from you waiting around every time, too, for me to make a wish.

    YOUNG NERDY WAITER

    I don’t understand.

    GEENA

    Don’t worry. Your secret is safe with me.

    The Young Nerdy Waiter looks scared.

    YOUNG NERDY WAITER

    I don’t have a secret.

    GEENA

    Hahaha, you’re good! Come here and sit down. I won’t tell a soul. Take a break. I order you. Just kidding, you know that I know everything about what it’s like to be ordered around and fulfill everyone’s wishes on every whim.

    YOUNG NERDY WAITER

    I really have to go. My shift is over.

    GEENA

    Even better. Did you have dinner yet?

    The Young Nerdy Waiter shakes his head. Geena makes room in the bed.

    GEENA

    Well, dig in!

    YOUNG NERDY WAITER

    If I do you promise not to tell Mr. Bravado anything.

    GEENA

    Who?

    YOUNG NERDY WAITER

    My boss.

    GEENA

    Like I said, your secret is safe with me.

    The Young Nerdy Waiter sits down on the bed with Geena and digs in on a piece of fried chicken.

    INT. HOTEL CORRIDOR – NIGHT

    George opens the door to Hotel Room 2. He looks right at Geena and the Young Nerdy Waiter, sitting in bed eating, talking, and watching golf, having a good time.

    INT. HOTEL ROOM 2 – NIGHT

    George and Geena seem oblivious to the door opening.

    YOUNG NERDY WAITER

    So, that’s called a birdie, what he just did.

    GEENA

    I like it.

    GEORGE

    What the hell?

    The Young Nerdy Waiter jumps up and freezes.

    YOUNG NERDY WAITER

    I didn’t do anything, I promise!

    GEORGE

    You didn’t do anything? You ate the whole goddamn hotel kitchen! What do you think all of this will cost. I’m ruined!

    YOUNG NERDY WAITER

    I didn’t sleep with her, I swear. Your wife said she would tell my boss that I stole form the bar register if I didn’t come in and eat and watch golf with her. I’m sorry, I’m just trying to pay for college.

    Geena reacts as soon as she hears the words “your wife.”

    GEENA

    Eww, wife? (after the words “Your wife”)

    What, stole from the bar?

    GEORGE

    Get out! Now! And get this whole goddamn order off my bill, or I will tell your boss everything!

    The Young Nerdy Waiter can’t get out fast enough. Geena calls after him.

    GEENA

    Your secret’s safe with me! He’s not my husband!

    THIRTY DAY SCREENPLAY ASSIGNMENT #14

    James E. Clark Act 2 Middle Scenes

    What I learned from this assignment: By having the Protagonist struggle to be relevant, it heightens the curiosity of the audience in regards to the story.

    <b style=”background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>KEY SCENE 2 OUTLINE

    EXT. CHURCH CAMP – DAY

    Beginning

    Carrie drives the RV into the camp. She gets out and stretches. As she walks she exhibits a slight limp. She goes to the camp office to let them know she just arrived. Office staff is happy to see her because the volunteer construction group needs leadership. Carrie asks to see the Camp Director. She’s told the Director who brought her on board is no longer there. The new Director will be coming in a week.

    Middle

    Carrie calls the volunteer group together consisting of twenty people from various churches. She tells them who she is. They’re glad to have her – at first. She divides them into teams of four. She lays out the plans for each team and each element of the project.

    As she follows up with the teams she sees things that don’t meet her standard of quality. She makes her displeasure know in a very NCO manner. Several people go to the office to complain. They say they are volunteers not sailors.

    End

    Carrie realizes she’s made the same mistake she did at the boondock site. She brings the volunteers together for a fun day where they do team building games – some of which are construction related. She apologizes to them. After the games she treats them to pizza. The teams are able to work quickly and efficiently and Carrie treats them with respect that volunteers deserve.

    KEY SCENE 3 OUTLINE

    INT. COUNTY – PERMIT OFFICE – DAY

    Beginning

    Carrie enters the office with multiple drawings. She fills out an application for a construction permit. The county employee is on their cell phone holding a private conversation while Carrie politely waits. She’s annoyed by tries to hide it.

    Middle

    As Carrie ties to explain the project to him he’s rude and makes snarky comments about Christian Camps. She let’s the comments go by as she contuse to explain the project. He then insults her personally. She puts him in his place as if he were a Seaman Recruit. He’s incensed. Tells her off and refuses to give her a permit.

    End

    Carrie walks down the hallway to the off ice of County Board of Supervisors. She goes straight to the top. She explains her situation to the bureaucrat behind the counter who doesn’t seem to care. But she’s overheard by one of the County supervisors. Who takes charge and picks up the phone. Turns out he’s also a retired Navy NCO.

    Carrie walks back down the hallway to the permit office. The permit is there waiting for her.

    JUDITH ABINGDON ACT 2 MIDDLE SCENE

    what I learned: scenes are moving around, not sure when one ends and the next one begins. I think Mel is my antagonist!

    SECOND SCENE

    Juliet meets her new neighbor, a hip wise for her age girl named Melody (MEL) and they immediately bond. Mel introduces her to another neighbor, they paint, listen to music, smoke pot ( a first for Juliet) get caught, and have a parent intervention.


    THIRD SCENE

    Fed up with dealing with her, they send her to Inez.

    Juliet goes wild with her newfound freedoms and soon finds herself back home.


    KEY SCENE 2

    INT. JULIET’S HOUSE EVENING

    Mom, I’m finished with my homework and the dishes, can I go next door and talk with the new neighbor, I see she sits out on her stoop most nights. I’ll be right out front.


    JULIA

    OK, but I want you in by 10:00, and I don’t want to call you.


    JULIET

    K

    She runs out.


    EXT. MEL’S FRONT STOOP EVENING

    Juliet approaches


    JULIET

    Hey there, can I join you?


    MEL

    Cool, yeah I’m Melody, but no one calls me that It’s Mel!


    JULIET

    I’m Juliet, what grade are you in? Haven’t seen you in school?


    Mel

    I go to public school


    JULIET

    Man, lucky!


    MEL

    It’s all bullshit anyway! Tell me one useful thing they have taught you this week.


    Juliet laughs

    JULIET

    ya got me!


    MEL

    Anyway, it will all be over soon and then we can start living our lives!

    Juliet nods to the travel magazine Mel is holding.


    JULIET

    Making your plans already I see.


    MEL

    You know it, I’ve been saving up, as soon as that last day is over I’m heading out, somewhere warm, with palm trees!


    JULIET

    Sounds nice! I’m to busy dealing with my crazy parents to have made a plan.


    MEL

    I get it! My parents are cool tho, after three boys, I think they forgot I was here. So no hassles really.


    JULIET

    I’ll trade ya!

    Mel laughs

    MEL

    Hang in there girl, not long to go.


    JULIET

    Nine months feels like a lifetime! Hey, I think I have to go in now. Catch ya tomorrow?


    MEL

    Right on! Sister ( gives a clenched fist sign) Hey have you met LISA across the street?


    JuLIET

    NO, it looks very mysterious over there.

    MEL

    Lisa’s cool, I’ll introduce you, You’ll like her.


    Juliet smiles and gives a fist pump back


    MEL

    ok, see ya! Hey, I got a name for ya, I’m gonna call you JULES.


    Juliet smiles

    JULIET

    Hey, I like that! later!


    INT. LISA’S BEDROOM DAY

    Lisa is dressed In transparent flowy clothes no bra, dirty bare feet and is smoking a joint.Music is playing. Lisa talks in between puffs and painting watercolors on her wall.

    LISA

    Yeah, I caught the Buffalo Springfield at Woodstock, they played a mad jam! But they’re changing their name now ya know, everything is fluid man, Niel might go out on his own, It’ll be cool tho!


    Juliet is wide-eyed as she listens to Lisa

    JULIET

    You went to Woodstock? How is that possible?


    LISA

    My old lady is cool, man, I just told her I had some things to do and she didn’t ask for details. Fluid man! Here take a hit, this stuff is righteous.


    Juliet takes a puff and coughs for a minute

    JULIET

    UMMMM, yeah, righteous!

    she hands it to Mel, who draws long and hard like a pro.

    LISA( to MEL )

    Hey, no bogarting! ( smiling)

    why don’t you guys grab a brush and paint whatever moves ya.

    They paint, play music, sing and have a great time.


    Juliet asks about the time and needs to go

    Juliet

    Hey Lis, got some perfume I can spray on myself, my Mom is like a junior detective!


    LISA

    Sure Babe, in the bathroom. And here take a few joints for later! Come back any time!


    Juliet and Mel head off, Lisa is still lost in creativity.


    Mel

    Hey Jules, we’re going into the city tonight, gonna catch some live music, wanna go?


    JULIET

    I’ll see if I can skip out. Meet you on the stoop at 11:00 if it’s a go!


    Mel

    Right on!

    Once home Juliet stashes the joints in a pencil box on her desk and goes down to dinner.

    Juliet waits till it’s quiet, sneaks out her bedroom window, onto the back porch roof and jumps down to freedom.

    They meet some other friends and take the train into NYC. They head to a new club CBGB’S, with a cast of characters waiting outside. Most of them looked like they could be the entertainment. Juliet felt like she stood out in her ordinary clothes.

    She runs into the older brother of an old friend, he is very attentive and asks to see her again.

    The night was a blast, they get home around 4:00 am, Juliet sneaks back in and thinks al is well. but in the morning her mother is stern and quiet.

    INT. JULIA’S HOUSE MORNING

    JULIA

    I need to go to work now but be ready for a talk when I get home.


    JULIET ( looking puzzled)

    JULIA went to her room after dinner, she looked in the pencil case and the joints were gone, now her mother is calling her downstairs.

    At the dining room table she sees, Mel, Mel’s parents and the joints on the table. The parents have drinks in front of them and are smoking.


    LARRY

    I knew you were being too nice. Do you think we are stupid or something? Where were you last night?

    Juliet and Mel exchange questioning looks, Mel shrugs.

    Mel

    We went into the city to see a new band, had some Indian food, and headed back, nothing bad happened !

    MEL’s parents say nothing.

    Larry

    And where did you get this? ( showing the joints, looking at Juliet)

    Mel

    Those are mine.

    Larry ( to Juliet)

    And what’s next heroin?

    ( Mel’s parents look surprised) he is going too far


    MEL (bursts out laughing)

    Man, It doesn’t work that way! ( looking to her parents) Mom I got from Dan ( her brother)9 Talking to Larry ) Since my brother got back from Nam, he’s been on the weed, it calms him down.I snuck them out of his room.


    MEL’S Mother

    Now hon, you know that’s not a good thing, and going out all night without telling us.

    MEL

    I’m sorry mom, I’ll tell you next time. But you know pot is no worse than drinking, probably better really.


    MEL’S MOM

    OK HON, I think you should apologize to Mr. & Mrs. Hall and we can discuss this at home.

    They rush out. Juliet has been struck dumb by the whole scene.

    Larry

    Nice work, and now you embarrassed us in front of the neighbors!


    JUILET

    you did a nice job of that yourself. I think they were the ones who were embarrassed.

    Larry gets up and lunges toward her


    JUILET (emboldened now by Mel’s performance)

    Man, don’t you even see what’s going on in the world right now? The old rules no longer apply, you really need to catch up old man.


    and now he reaches out to grab her


    JULIA

    Just stop, stop it now. She grabs the ashtray from the table and throws it, it crashes on the wall, Juliet runs upstairs, her mother sits with her hands in her face crying.

    What I learned doing this assignment is that there’s a lot of ground to cover, but focus on the essentials means better memorable scenes and faster writing.

    1. Outline Key Scenes 2 & 3.

    KS 2

    INT. – DINER – NIGHT

    Finally, the two start to outline, dismally. Jax keeps explaining space things to Morty. Morty confesses to not knowing too much about tech, but says that the teacher is hot. Waitress hears and says that they’re not her type, but that they’d be catches. Jax tries to get back on topic, as they find the waitress is right, each is single and unattached. To get back on topic, Jax bargains with Morty, says he will get him a hot date (via social media) and in return Morty will commit 100% to wormhole aliens, and forget Shakespeare vs Hitler. They’ll continue the outline in the morning, this time at Morty’s place.

    KS 3

    INT. -SCHOOL CLASSROOM -EARLY EVENING

    Morty hates apps says he likes Bella Bustamante the teacher. He proceeds to plan asking her out electronically. Jax helps him “get with it” by learning texting, etc.

    Morty flubs the text message to Bella so its an insulting typo. Jax riles Morty for not doing the text right. Morty complains about the size of the keyboard on the phone for big fingers.

    Morty and Jax walk into the diner.

    WAITRESS (ARLENE): Hi looker. Hi Shakespeare.

    Morty and Jax take a booth.

    WAITRESS: What’ll it be?

    MORTY: A ham on rye and coffee.

    JAX: A field green salad. And water.

    The waitress leaves.

    MORTY: Did she just call me looker?

    JAX: She didn’t call me Shakespeare.

    MORTY: Yeah, I got it. You know, just because I’m older doesn’t mean I’m not interesting.

    JAX: I’m interesting. You’re a curiousity.

    MORTY: I mean. I could really go for a date. But I hate all those technology dating thingy’s.

    JAX: Dating Apps?

    MORTY: Yeah. Apps schapps. Why can’t I just ask someone out? Like our teacher, for instance.

    JAX: Ms. Bustamonte?

    MORTY: Yeah, Ms. Bella Bustamonte. She’s great.

    JAX: Ball buster Bustamonte?

    MORTY: Come on. She’s sweet.

    JAX: Sweet as an agitated rattlesnake.

    MORTY: What’s the matter kid? You afraid of a strong woman?

    Jax taps the table top.

    JAX: A dollar, please.

    Morty fumbles in his pocket.

    He slaps a dollar onto the table.

    JAX: Look Morty. I’ll teach you about apps and such and I’ll have you texting her in no time and not like an old man.

    Morty taps on the table.

    MORTY: Dollar, please.

    JAX: Uh uh. I didn’t use it in the same context. I used it as simile not a slang name, Mr. Writer.

    MORTY: Dollar please.

    JAX: Whatever.

    Jax rummages through his pocket and slaps a dollar bill on the table.

    JAX: Look Morty. I promise you by the time I’m through with you, I’ll get you a date with Ms. Bustamonte and you’ll

    promise me that you’ll write Alien’s In The Wormhole. No more Shakespeare Vs. Hitler. Deal?

    MORTY: I’m not sure that’s valid. We’re supposed to be writing partners. Oh, okay. Deal.

    3. Write Key Scene 3: Not only does their plan fail, but…

    INT. -SCHOOL CLASSROOM -EARLY EVENING

    Morty and Jax are seated in the back of class.

    JAX: Okay, Morty. Do like I taught you. Text her a message. Maybe something about class. You have to turn on the spell checker or else

    you’ll make big mistakes.

    Morty slowly taps keys on the phone.

    JAX: You got it. You got it?

    MORTY: Easy. I’m trying to type this out.

    JAX: Use your thumbs.

    MORTY: Thumbs were made for grasping not typing on a keyboard. Especially such a tiny one.

    JAX: Come on Morty. Class is about to start.

    MORTY: Almost finished. There. Now I just press the send button. There.

    There is a DING heard from the front of the class, where Ms. Bustamonte stands.

    Ms. Bustamonte glances at her phone, then, sets it back down on the desk.

    MS. BUSTAMONTE: Okay class. Today, we are going to talk about log lines. We are going to riff on your ideas and come up with a three line pitch.

    Later:

    MS. BUSTAMONTE: Sign up for your outline review now, by teams. That means you, I need to talk with you by end of next week. Class dismissed.

    The students start to file out, as Morty lingers with Jax. The teacher is collecting her messages, M&J smile at one another, then bring up the rear.

    MS. BUSTAMONTE: Uh, Mr. Shakespeare, if that is your name. I don’t appreciate your lewd and undiscipined text messages. I’m not a Ho, and I’d rather date

    a fictional character. I hope your outline is top notch, men, because now I’m going to give it the once over my boot camp trainees used to cry after.

    MORTY: Call me Morty, please. I just said..

    He opens the app on his phone, and realizes spell check had zinged him. Ho Mrs Bustamonte, would you like a date?

    JAX: Uh, I can vouch for him, he’s too afraid of you to call you a ho. Ball buster, maybe.

    MS. BUSTAMONTE: What did you say? (stares him down)

    MORTY: Really it’s all quite innocent. I meant Hi, that’s all.

    MS. BUSTAMONTE: See you next week. Bring your balls.

    What I learned from this assignment. I am progressing somewhat better today, but still only on page 21 in final draft. Onward and upward!

    KEY SCENES # 1 – REACTION TO THE TURNING POINT

    PROTAGONIST TAKES ON A PLAN AND EXECUTES – BUT SHE IS UNABLE TO EXECUTE ANY OF HER LEADS: NOT ONLY DOES JESI’S PLAN FAIL, BUT SHE IS FORCED TO RE-START HER FATHER’S BUSINESS.

    INT. JOHNSON HOME/ OFFICE – DAY

    Jesi flips through a tattered phone book at her father’s desk and locates a number. She picks up the land line and calls.

    JESI

    (into phone)

    Mr. Schuman, this is Jesi Johnson, Jackson’s daughter —

    INTERCUT:

    INT. SHUMAN HOME (CONTINUOUS)

    Harold (Pug) Schuman sits at his desk, smoking a cigar, speaking into the phone.

    HAROLD

    Jesi, I can’t tell you how sorry I was to here about your father. He wasn’t just my contractor, he was a damn good friend — it was so damn sudden. Just glad it wasn’t my roof he fell off.

    JESI

    I know. It’s been a dreadful time. And thank you for your kind words,

    Mr Schuman.

    HAROLD

    Yo can call me Pug.

    JESI

    Alright, Harold, I mean Pug. Also, I was wondering if you had a moment — I’d like to drop by and have a talk with you about my father’s business. I need your guidance.

    HAROLD(O.S.)

    Sure, honey, anytime. I’ve also got some deferred maintenance I need you to take a look at. Are you still doin’ the handyman repairs?

    JESI

    Yes, of course, to keep the wolves from the door. But seriously, to pay the doctor bills.

    HAROLD

    Yeah, those doctor bills can sure wipe out your savings. And by the way, I’m thinking of selling the place.

    JESI

    Harold, Pug, when is the soonest I can come over?

    KEY SCENE #2 PROTAGONIST TAKES ON A PLAN AND EXECUTEDS IT

    EXT. 20 UNIT APARTMENT BUILDING (LONG BEACH) – DAY

    Jesi pulls up outside in the Johnson’s Contractor truck. Harrold is there to meet her. They hug. Then both wipe the tears.

    HAROLD

    One of the tenants just vacated one of my furnished units. Come inside and sit.

    INT. FURNISHED UNIT (CONT)

    The unit is tired, needs a re-hab.

    HAROLD

    My roof isn’t doing so well. Are you familiar with those damn caly tiles?

    JESI

    (she is not)

    Sure I am. Got the ladder. I’ll get up there and take a look in a minute.

    (pauses)

    Harold, Pug, the real reason I’m here is I need your advice regarding the multi-unit real estate business. But trust me, I’m still keeping the construction business going. But in order to make the kind of income I need right now, I’m gonna have to get some listings going —

    (blurts out)

    Pug, you said you were thinking of selling?

    HAROLD

    Well, you know, I’d love to give you a break, but I’ve got this agent I’ve used for many years — ever heard of Henry Wu?

    JESI

    I know him well.

    (looks away, then comes back with)

    I’ll do a much better job for you. Us rookies try harder. I’ll get you the highest and best value. After all I know this place. I even checked out your crawl space — remember?

    HAROLD

    That’s right, you’re quite a woman. Now about my roof —

    They get up and walk outside.

    JESI

    Let me go get a ladder.

    HAROLD

    Wait, isn’t that how your Dad —

    JESI

    It’s okay. I’m a lot younger, and heck of a lot lighter —

    Her face crumbles, but she stuffs the tears as she heads towards the truck.

    She returns with an extension ladder, leans it against the building — then hesitates.

    JESI

    You know, I just started a new helper. Mario, he’s awesome. Maybe I’ll let him climb up there.

    HAROLD

    Makes sense to me. Send him over tomorrow. And look, I’ll have a talk with Henry, tell him I’m considering another agent. Competition is good and healthy, right?

    JESI

    Yes, agreed.

    She shakes Harold’s hand turns and walks away then stops.

    JESI

    Oh, Pug, if you don’t mind, please don’t mention to Henry that the other agent is me.

    HAROLD

    You got it. But don’t take it to the bank. I didn’t say you have the listing yet. Let’s get my roof fixed first.

    She walks towards the truck with a smile on her face, the first in a long while.

    INT. 20 UNIT APARTMENT BUILDING – NEXT DAY

    Jesi pulls up in the truck. She jumps out, with her side-kick MARIO (30), following behind her.

    JESI

    (to Mario)

    Be careful not to break any tiles while you’re up there. They’re a bitch. And no falling off.

    MARIO

    Nah, not me.

    Mario secures the ladder carefully against the building wall and starts to scale it.

    Harold pulls up at the same time. Yells out to Jesi. Mario turns around. The ladder falters and Mario falls to the ground. Jesi runs to him

    JESI

    Oh my God. Mario, are you all right?

    Mario is nodding his head, a little stunned. Rubbing his leg.

    Harold hurries over.

    HARROLD

    Damnit. I knew I shoulda renewed my liability insurance!

    (looks to Jesi)

    You’ve got your own insurance, right?

    MARIO

    I’m okay. I’m okay. You don’t need no insurance.

    Mario starts to re-scale the ladder.

    HARROLD

    You watch your step, okay. Don’t want no goddamn accidents.

    The ladder starts skidding on the stucco wall. Mario falls again. He jumps up. He’s okay. But this time Jesi takes over.

    Harold yells out as she starts scaling the ladder.

    HARROLD

    Jesi, by the way, I called Henry last night. He’s on his way over!

    JESI

    Oh, I won’t be here that long. I doubt our path’s will cross.

    KEY SCENE 3: NOT ONLY DOES HER PLAN FAIL BUT …

    TIME LAPSE

    EXT. 20 UNIT APARTMENT BUILDING – MID-MORNING

    Jesi is on the roof, working at a fast pace, calling down to Mario.

    JESI

    Mario, I need about six more tiles. Send them up on the pully.

    Mario stacks the tile and sends it up.

    EXT. THE STREET (CONTINUOUS)

    A moment later, Henry pulls up in his BMW. Harold hurries to the curb to greet him, shaking hands.

    POV

    Jesi sees Henry, and does not want to get down from that roof. She hides behind a chimney stack, and stalls.

    Mario is calling out to her.

    MARIO

    Hey Jesi, need any more of those tiles?

    ON HENRY

    He stops the conversation with Harold and looks to the roof.

    HENRY

    What the hell. Is that Jesi up there?

    What I learned from this assignment was to keep moving; no matter what. Continue to fill the blanks, and the story will flow onto the page.

    • Beginning – Mateo prepares to leave work in the parking garage.
    • Middle – Glorivette confronts Mateo; wondering why he’s been avoiding her.
    • End – Mateo tells Glorivette it’s over between them; Glorivette threatens Mateo.

    INT. PARKING GARAGE – EVENING

    Mateo walks with his workbag. Looks exhausted from a long work day.

    He makes it to his car. Unlocks the doors with his keys. Whips his bag into the backseat. When Mateo closes the door…

    Glorivette stands a few feet away; startles Mateo —

    MATEO

    Whoa! Glorivette…

    GLORIVETTE

    Scared you?

    Beat. They have an intense stare-down.

    MATEO

    I was headed home… What’s up?

    Beginning: Mark is on the way to the police building. She stands in front of the building gasping to understand. But pushes forward to enter the turnstile

    Middle: He wants to find anyone who can be describe or fit the description of a burglar.

    End: Of course, he won’t.

    INT. POLICE ROOM – DAY

    Beginning: The busy place with people. Mark wants to find someone he can talk too.

    Middle: This time he can’t find anyone. He walks over to a counter for information.

    End: There is entourage of people in handcuffs, sitting and at other side of the wall.

    INT. POLICE ROOM – DAY

    Beginning: At a desk the detective is typing. A young woman walks in behind him. He wants to tell her couple of things.

    Middle: Mark walks in. says “We’re going to do it my way.”

    END: He wants to turn him away. By telling him there is nothing they can do.

    <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>MIDDLE: SAM is welcomed by all her friends, the beavers, fish, turtle, ducks and cranes. She introduces them to WILLIAM.     Christi’s Act 2 Middle Scenes

    I’ve learned this lesson that I don’t have enough conflict with the Lieutenant. He’s clearly the protagonist but so is Bryce. Because I have them dueling for the role, I”ve made them co-protagonists. While conflict is clear from being wrongly accused of murder, the detecting of the crime must have conflict from all sides, not just the suspects. I’ve made him and Nessa their main source of conflict on the site of the murder.

    I”ve also learned that journals are difficult when placing out scenes. I”ve switched to cards on my living room floor. When I sell my first screenplay, I’ll invest in some sort of wall board.

    Beginning:

    EXT. METALBAUM’S ENCAMPMENT – NIGHT

    METALBAUM orders his crew to dam up the mountain river for the much-needed water that is to wash the gold for processing, after the mountain is exploded by dynamite.

    Middle: The next morning all the oasis pond creatures awake to a mostly dried up muddy pond. Panic takes place. All the creature are covered in or stuck mud. DUCK #1 flies to the SCORPIO DEN and tells SAM, WILLAIM, TANNER and AADYA what has happened. All of them head to the oasis pond to see for themselves. Loud blasts are heard from the summit of GOLD MOUNTAIN. Everyone is scared except WILLIAM and SAM. WIILIAM bravely goes up to the summit encampment to see what is going on. SAM wants to go too. Her mother won’t let her. WILLIAM keeps scratching an itch in his beard, during the accent to the summit encampment.

    End: WIILIAM climbs up to the mountain summit and gets to METALBAUM’S ENCAMPMENT at dusk. He observers the mining crew digging and setting up more dynamite charges. He sees that the dam the is blocking the mountain river from flowing down to the oasis pond. He quietly sneaks around back of the dam. WILLIAM ties to break the structure by butting it. Nothing moves. CHUBBY who is in the chuck wagon looking for something to eat, hears the noise. WILLIAM then tries to pry wooden boards that are crisscrossed holding back the water. CHUBBY appears behind WILLIAM with a large steak knife he has in his belt. CHUBBY throws it at WILLIAM. WILLIAM’S back is to CHUBBY. SAM who has been hiding in WILLIAM’S beard without WILLIAM knowing it, and defied her mother, sees CHUBBY throw the knife at WILLIAM. SAM takes her claw pincers and squeezes one of WILLIAM’S ears as hard as she can. WILLIAM jerks his head sideways in pain, sees the knife coming at him and ducks just in time, missing him and the knife sticks into the crisscrossed wood. WILLIAM launches a counterattack at CHUUBY and sends him flying into the dam water pool with a splash. WILLIAM and SAM duck in behind brushes, feet away. CHUBBY starts screaming. “HELP, I CAN’T SWIM” several times. Several men including METALBAUM coming running to see what the excitement is about. They arrive at the dammed water pool, all laughing at CHUUBY as he flays around in the water. CHUBBY sinks under the water, only his hat floats on top. METALBAUM reaches in, grabs CHUUBY, and pulls him over to the containment wall. METALBAUM yells, What are you doing in there?

    CHUBBY holding on for life. CHUBBY’S out of breath, thanks METALBAUM for saving him. Tells everyone there that he saw a mountain goat ramming the pool and the goat attacked him. All laugh.

    METALBAUM orders CHUBBY to stand up you idiot, the pool is only 4 feet deep. METALBAUM grabs CHUBBY’S hat and slams it full of water on CHUBBY’S head.

    SAM whispers to WILLIAM, We are outnumbered, let’s get out of here. They quietly disappear into the now darkness and head back down to the desert.

    What I learned doing this assignment is I’m really starting to get the hang of letting dialogue flow!

    Act 2:

    INT. PHOENIX’S HIGH SCHOOL – DAY

    Phoenix is at her locker, chatting with her friends. We notice a dramatic improvement in her mood and confidence. Levi walks by and Phoenix doesn’t hide; instead she ignores him as he checks her out.

    HALEY (whistling)

    Did you see that?

    PHOENIX (shrugging)

    Yeah. His loss.

    EDEN

    How are things with Chandler?

    PHOENIX (SMILING)

    He’s having a party Saturday night and you’re all coming with me!

    GABRIELLE (looking at her friends)

    Count us in.

    INT. PHOENIX’S CAR – NIGHT

    Phoenix is driving with her three friends in the car. The pull up to Chandler’s house and manage to find an opening parking spot in his backyard.

    PHOENIX

    There’s a lot of people here!

    EDEN (applying lipstick in the mirror)

    Are you excited to see Chandler?

    PHOENIX (fixing her hair)

    I am. Nervous, too.

    HALEY

    Don’t be nervous. I’m sure he’s excited to see you!

    GABRIELLE

    I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m thirsty. Let’s go.

    EXT. CHANDLER AND JOEY’S HOUSE – NIGHT

    There are quite a few party guests drinking and socializing in the yard. Everyone stops to watch the girls walk into the house.

    INT. CHANDLER AND JOEY’S HOUSE – NIGHT

    The girls are greeted with loud, pulsing music. The house is mostly dark and is lit by several black lights and a strobe lamp. People are strewn throughout the house, dancing and talking. Phoenix looks for Chandler as her friends grab beers out of the cooler. Chandler smiles as he sees Phoenix and embraces her in a hug.

    CHANDLER (yelling over the music)

    I’m glad you came!

    PHOENIX

    Thanks for inviting me!

    Phoenix and Chandler dance along to the music. Haley surveys the crowd with her back to the wall while Gabrielle and Eden chat with some boys. KATRINA (short, dark curly hair) walks by and runs her hand over Chandler’s back. She leans in close and whispers something in his ear while staring at Phoenix. Her hand lingers on Chandler’s arm.

    KATRINA (to Chandler)

    Thanks for the invite. I’ll call you later.

    Katrina winks at him as she leaves. Phoenix is uncomfortable about their exchange. She tries to shrug it off as she continues dancing with Chandler.

    HALEY

    I hate to break this up, but I have to be home before curfew.

    PHOENIX

    Okay. Grab the girls and I’ll meet you outside.

    CHANDLER

    You can’t leave yet!

    PHOENIX

    I’ve got to.

    Chandler pouts before pulling Phoenix into a hug and kissing her.

    CHANDLER

    I’ll call you soon.

    PHOENIX

    Okay.

    EXT. CHANDLER AND JOEY’S HOUSE – NIGHT

    The girls head outside towards the car when Katrina starts yelling at them.

    KATRINA

    It’s about time you whores leave!

    GABRIELLE

    Who are you calling a whore?

    Katrina blindsides Gabrielle with a punch to the face. Gabrielle falls to the ground while Katrina jumps on her and continues punching her. Eden and Haley pull her off of Gabrielle while Phoenix stands frozen in disbelief. Katrina’s friends lead her away as Phoenix helps Gabrielle to her feet.

    KATRINA

    Let that be a lesson to you all to stay out of my territory!

    Gabrielle is covered in cuts and grass stains. She spits blood out onto the ground.

    GABRIELLE

    The next time you see me, you better fucking run!

    INT. PHOENIX’S CAR – NIGHT

    PHOENIX (To Gabrielle)

    Are you okay?

    GABRIELLE (dabbing at a cut that won’t stop bleeding)

    I’m fine. That bitch would have been the one bleeding if it had been a fair fight.

    HALEY

    I think you’re going to need stitches, Gabrielle. That cut is pretty deep.

    GABRIELLE (sarcastically)

    My mother is going to be so pleased with me.

    EDEN

    It’s not your fault! Katrina started it.

    PHOENIX

    Should I take you to the emergency room?

    GABRIELLE (staring in the mirror)

    Ugh. I guess you better.

    EXT. HOSPITAL – NIGHT

    Phoenix and Haley are sitting on a beach outside the emergency room. Eden is lingering nearby, smoking a cigarette.

    PHOENIX

    I feel so bad for Gabrielle.

    EDEN

    She’s tough. She can handle it.

    PHOENIX

    I know, but she was sticking up for me.

    HALEY

    What is Katrina’s problem, anyway?

    PHOENIX

    I don’t know. I see her at school every day, but I’ve never talked to her.

    EDEN

    Did you see the way she was touching Chandler?

    PHOENIX

    Unfortunately, I had a front-row seat.

    HALEY

    He didn’t seem very interested in her.

    Phoenix sighs. The emergency room door slides open and Gabrielle walks out with fresh stitches under her eye.

    GABRIELLE (bowing)

    Scarface, at your service.

    Phoenix gives her a hug.

    PHOENIX

    Thanks for always having my back.

    GABRIELLE

    Someone has to put that bitch in her place!

    PHOENIX (laughing)

    Alright, Rocky, let’s get you home.

    INT. PHOENIX’S BEDROOM – AFTERNOON

    The phone rings.

    PHOENIX

    Hello?

    CHANDLER

    Hey.

    PHOENIX

    How are you?

    CHANDLER (angrily)

    You tell me.

    PHOENIX

    What do you mean?

    CHANDLER

    My party got busted shortly after you left. Any chance you or your friends called the cops?

    PHOENIX (stammering)

    No, no we didn’t.

    CHANDLER

    It just seems really convenient how your friend got hurt and suddenly the cops were there.

    PHOENIX (getting mad)

    We took Gabrielle to the hospital. And she told them she ran into a cupboard in the dark. You’re welcome.

    CHANDLER (embarrassed)

    Oh. I’m sor-

    PHOENIX (annoyed)

    Look, I’ve got to go. Hope you had fun at your party.

    Phoenix hangs up.

    INT. HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASIUM – AFTERNOON

    Phoenix and Haley are at Colorguard rehearsals. After practicing their routine a few times, they take a break.

    HALEY

    I can’t believe Chandler thought you were the reason his party got busted.

    PHOENIX (shrugs)

    I suppose it’s easier to blame some young, dumb high school girl than contemplate that maybe his neighbors were tired of the noise.

    HALEY

    This age thing really bothers you, huh?

    PHOENIX

    Did I tell you that he invited me to a concert next weekend?

    HALEY

    On State finals weekend?

    PHOENIX (nods)

    I turned him down. Then he asked why. Telling him I had a high school function to attend didn’t impress him very much.

    HALEY

    I’m sorry.

    PHOENIX (sighs)

    I feel like I’m out of my league here. He’s out of school, working full time and living on his own. I don’t smoke, gamble, and I hardly drink. I’m also not experience in any of the physical elements of an adult relationship. (Puts head in hands) Why do I think I even stand a chance with him?

    HALEY

    To be fair, he knew how old you were the first night he met you.

    PHOENIX

    Maybe so, but I doubt he needs a constant reminder that I’m a few years younger than him.

    HALEY

    So what are you going to do?

    PHOENIX

    I think the best plan is to just play things cool for awhile. I’m not going to go out of my way to see him or call him. I’ll put the ball in his court. That should tell me pretty quickly how interested he is.

    HALEY (smiling)

    For a young broad, you sure are wise beyond your years.

    PHOENIX (smirking)

    Thanks, you old hag.

    HALEY (laughing)

    I’m only a few months older than you!

    PHOENIX

    Was color TV a thing when you were a kid?

    HALEY (laughing)

    Oh the stories I could tell you about how things were back in my day…

    PHOENIX

    Spare me. I’ve already heard them all.

    The girls laugh and head back to practice.

    INT. PHOENIX’S HIGH SCHOOL – DAY

    Phoenix is at her locker when Gabrielle approaches. Her stitches still look pretty fresh.

    GABRIELLE

    What’s the plan for this weekend?

    PHOENIX

    Haley and I have state finals.

    GABRIELLE (smirking)

    Oh, that’s right. I figured we could find some more trouble to get into.

    Levi walks by and does a double take at Gabrielle’s wound.

    LEVI

    What happened to your face?

    GABRIELLE (sassy)

    The same thing that’s going to happen to yours if you don’t mind your business!

    PHOENIX (laughs)

    I really think he enjoys the attention.

    GABRIELLE

    He should, his girlfriend doesn’t pay him any unless you’re around. She’s just trying to make you jealous.

    PHOENIX (closing her locker)

    Let her keep trying. Everyone needs a hobby.

    The girls laugh and walk to class.

    INT. STATE FINALS – NIGHT

    Haley and Phoenix are in matching uniforms with their team. Their performance goes great and they get first place in their division. After dinner with the coaches, the girls go back to their hotel room.

    INT. HOTEL ROOM – NIGHT

    Haley and Phoenix are in separate beds, watching television.

    HALEY

    Have you heard from Chandler?

    Phoenix shakes her head no.

    HALEY

    He’d probably call you if you’d give him your cell phone number.

    PHOENIX

    Meh. If and when the time comes that I think he’s worthy of it, then I’ll give it to him.

    HALEY

    You play hardball.

    PHOENIX

    I’m just stubborn.

    Phoenix’s phone rings.

    WILLIAM

    How did it go?

    PHOENIX (nonchalantly)

    We got first place.

    WILLIAM (laughs)

    You say that so humbly.

    PHOENIX

    It was pretty cool, but I don’t want to brag.

    WILLIAM

    I’m calling to tell you that Chandler was just here looking for you.

    PHOENIX (pauses then changes the TV channel)

    Oh yeah?

    WILLIAM

    This is the second night this week he’s been out here asking about you.

    PHOENIX

    What did you tell him?

    WILLIAM

    That you weren’t here.

    PHOENIX (laughs)

    Thanks, Cowboy Obvious.

    WILLIAM

    Are you going to give him your number?

    PHOENIX (thinking)

    Maybe. I haven’t decided yet.

    WILLIAM

    Will we see you next weekend?

    PHOENIX (smiling)

    You can count on it.

    INT. CLOTHING STORE IN A MALL – DAY

    Haley and Phoenix are at the mall with their team. They are doing some Christmas shopping before heading home. Haley is looking for a gift for her sister. Phoenix is helping her when she sees a baby blue Playboy visor on the wall. She picks it up and rolls it around in her hands then puts it back. She goes back to shopping. She returns to the visor and picks it up again, then carries it over to Haley.

    PHOENIX

    Do you think Chandler would like this?

    HALEY (smirking)

    What happened to playing it cool?

    PHOENIX

    I’m not saying I’m going to give it to him, but if the occasion arose, do you think he’d like it?

    HALEY (looks at the visor and then to Phoenix)

    Absolutely. I could totally see him wearing it.

    PHOENIX (skeptical)

    Really?

    HALEY

    Yes. I think the part that he’d like most is that it’s a gift from you.

    PHOENIX (unsure)

    You don’t think he’ll freak out that I bought him something?

    HALEY (squeezing Phoenix’s shoulder)

    He’s going to love it.

    Phoenix is still unsure of her purchase. She carries the visor around the store while she helps Haley shop. She puts it back twice and then decides to buy it at the last minute.

    INT. PHOENIX’S KITCHEN – NIGHT

    Phoenix wraps the visor with great care in tissue paper, places the gift in a gift bag and ties a ribbon around the handle. She examines the package for a few minutes looking for flaws. Then she carefully places it in the trunk of her car.

    INT. CHRISTOPHER, WILLIAM AND DARREN’S HOUSE – NIGHT

    Phoenix and Haley are sitting on the couch. Haley is drinking a beer. Christopher and William are sitting on the couch opposite them. They are watching a movie when Phoenix’s phone rings.

    PHOENIX

    Hey, Mom.

    PHOENIX’S MOM

    There’s a bad freezing rain/snowstorm rolling in. Does Christopher have a couple of couches you girls can crash on? I don’t want you driving in this mess.

    PHOENIX

    Yeah, we can stay here tonight.

    PHOENIX’S MOM

    Good! Please don’t go anywhere. The roads are already terrible.

    PHOENIX

    I’ll be home in the morning once the roads are cleared off.

    PHOENIX’S MOM

    I love you, sweetie. Have fun and behave!

    PHOENIX

    I love you, too, Mom. I’ll see you tomorrow.

    Haley looks at Phoenix as she hangs up the phone.

    PHOENIX (to Christopher and William)

    I hope you boys don’t mind, but Haley and I are stranded here tonight until the blizzard clears.

    CHRISTOPHER (taking a drink of his beer)

    Like I told you the first night you were here, make yourself at home.

    The house phone rings. Phoenix is closest to it, so she answers it.

    DARREN (on the phone)

    What are you doing?

    PHOENIX

    We’re just hanging out. Which one of your roommates would you like to talk to?

    DARREN

    Actually, I was calling for you. Hold on, someone wants to talk to you.

    There is some shuffling and whispering as the phone changes hands.

    CHANDLER

    Hey, what are you upto?

    PHOENIX (slowly)

    Hey. We’re watching a movie. What are you upto?

    CHANDLER

    We’re playing games. Would you like to join us?

    Phoenix glances sideways at Haley, who looks very comfy on the couch. The voice of her mother resounds in her ear, telling her not to drive anywhere.

    PHOENIX (drumming her fingers on the arm of the couch)

    I’d like to, but it’s pretty crappy out. I think we’re just going to stay here.

    CHANDLER (disappointed)

    Oh.

    There is some rustling and muffled conversation on Chandler’s end.

    CHANDLER

    We’ll be over in a bit.

    PHOENIX (sitting forward)

    Are you sure? They aren’t advising travel at all right now.

    CHANDLER

    I’ll see you soon.

    Phoenix hangs up the phone as Haley looks at her.

    WILLIAM

    What did Chandler want?

    PHOENIX

    How did you know who I was talking to?

    WILLIAM

    He’s been calling here regularly for you. Check the caller ID if you don’t believe me.

    Phoenix scrolls through the caller ID and is surprised to see Chandler’s name on it so many times.

    WILLIAM

    What did he want?

    PHOENIX (looking up)

    They’re coming over.

    Haley lets out a little squeal and nudges Phoenix.

    HALEY (whispering)

    Now you can give him your gift.

    Phoenix smile fades as she remembers the gift in her car.

    Darren arrives fifteen minutes later.

    DARREN

    It’s so cute that your boyfriend is risking his life to come see you!

    Darren giggles and makes kissy noises before dancing up the stairs to bed. Christopher and William head upstairs shortly after.

    Joey and Chandler arrive a half hour later. Chandler is wearing his signature yellow visor. Joey sits on the couch next to Haley and they chat. Phoenix carries the case of beer to the fridge. Chandler follows her into the kitchen. He presses Phoenix up against the sink and kisses her feverishly. His fingertips creep under her shirt to her lower back and she pulls away to catch her breath.

    CHANDLER

    I really like you.

    PHOENIX

    I like you, too, Chandler.

    Phoenix mindlessly plays with the buttons on Chandler’s shirt. She needs some fresh air.

    PHOENIX

    I have something for you. I’ll be right back.

    Phoenix dashes out to her car as the freezing rain hits her in the face. She almost falls on her ass. She pulls the gift out of the trunk and stands in the rain for a few moments letting herself cool down. She walks back to the house very carefully, slipping a few times. She takes a few deep breaths before opening the door. She returns to the kitchen and hands Chandler the gift bag.

    CHANDLER

    What’s this?

    PHOENIX

    Just something that made me think of you.

    Chandler carefully opens the gift and runs his hands over the visor before beaming ear to ear.

    CHANDLER

    I love it!

    He replaces the yellow visor on his head with the new blue one. Then he pulls Phoenix into a hug and kisses her.

    CHANDLER

    Thank you so much!

    Phoenix leads them back to the living room and they sit on the couch opposite from Joey and Haley.

    CHANDLER (pointing to his visor and grinning)

    Look what Phoenix got me.

    Haley winks at Phoenix and gives her a thumbs up sign.

    JOEY

    That’s really nice!

    The boys stay for several hours and leave close to sunrise.

    CHANDLER (holding Phoenix’s hands)

    I had a lot of fun with you tonight.

    PHOENIX

    I’m glad you came over.

    Chandler kisses her again.

    CHANDLER

    I’ll see you soon.

    Phoenix waves as she and Haley watch the boys depart.

    INT. PHOENIX’S CAR – MORNING

    HALEY

    He loved your gift! I told you he would!

    PHOENIX

    I probably wouldn’t have bought it if you hadn’t convinced me

    HALEY

    You guys are so freaking cute! Even the way he looks at you is adorable. I’m so happy for you!

    Phoenix turns back to the road and smiles.
