    IRON AND BLOOD

In colonial-era Australia, outlaw Edward ‘Ned’ Kelly wants to be a normal man, not a despised caricature of a human being on a wanted poster, so he’s determined to harass the state, its troopers and the corrupt officials who want him dead to make his point. Wily and daring Ned runs rings around local authorities until those authorities form a dark alliance with the Comte, a strange visitor from Europe who secretly holds horrific supernatural abilities. Ned soon finds he has become the vehicle for an evil darkness to destroy his township and even his entire country.

WHODUNIT – AKA – AMERICAN ABOMINATION BECAUSE PEOPLE DON’T FREAKING READ AGATHA CHRISTIE*

Newly married and promoted, Lance Fielding must investigate the murder of a billionaire in a remote estate where nothing is as it seems.

*I made that title in fury as my classic Christie whodunit was universally panned by my writing group. They loved the title so much that I keep it in as it may end up selling it. This will be a page one rewrite to bring it up to the vomiting sweater movie palate. In case you’re wondering, the original working title was ‘From the Manor Borne’.

My apologies, I thought the pre -work longline was asked for. The Assignment 1 is below:

      Lieutenant Lancelot Fielding’s Transformational Journey

From this assignment I’ve learned that the investigator’s arc is just as if not more important than the plotting of clues and red herrings.

      Fielding’s journeys:

Internal: From first generation cop uncertain in his identity to mastering his role by solving a diabolical crime.

External: From newlywed and new lieutenant to family man and confident authority(solved crime).

Old Ways: Cautious, solitary. Has friends but choses not to outshine them

New Ways: Confident and capable of delegation with friends and coworkers turned subordinates, able to shine and solve the crime.

    Bernadette Wilson – Transformational Journey

What I learned in this assignment is that I know the character more than I thought I did. She’s flourishing within me as I answer these questions. I think this is a very character driven story.

Psychological Thriller – In New York City 1964, a PHD Psychology student helps the Male Dominated Police Detective Unit in finding out who killed her gay fiancee.

    2. Who is your Hero and what is their Character Arc that represents a transformation?

    Character – Brinda Cage

    <div>
Internal Journey: She goes from an
afraid-of-the-world psychology student to a highly respected, charismatic,
    uncanny individual.
    </div><div>

    External Journey: She meets the
roughest people in all of NY society and gets them to talk and reveal secrets
of crime, murder and corruption, including her own teachers.

    </div>

    3. What are the Old Ways and New Ways?

    OLD WAYS:

    1. Strictly By the book, but bohemian.

    2. Conformed to academia as it is for survival reasons.

    3. Comfortable within the confines of the contained, controlled psychology world.

    4. She does not trust too many people, especially men.

    5. Does not like leaving Greenwich Village too often.

    6. Doesn’t open herself to love, except for her misfit patients.

    7. She thinks she knows what happened to her parents.

    8. She was a troubled youth because her mother abandoned her.

    9. Her father put her away, but she escaped.

    10. Hanging with societal misfits is safe for her.

    11. Doesn’t date. Hangs out with gay people. Afraid of authority and straight white men who are like her father.

    NEW WAYS:

    1. She gains the respect of the Male Dominated NY Police Department and Detective Division for her keen eye for human psychology.

    2. She begins to trust certain men within the Police department.

    3. She begins to distrust her psychology professor and psychology community.

    4. She begins to question and distrust her role in society.

    5. She finds out she’s not alone in the world.

    6. She finds out about what really happened to both her parents.

    8. She maintains her bohemian roots but grows up at the end.

    9. She reconciles her lost life of her youth.

    Christopher Sequeira’s Transformational Journey

What I learned doing this assignment is…Identifying the before and after can expose nuances in a character’s thinking and behaviour which help figure out what kind of obstacles I’m going to have to demonstrate they face in themselves in the story.

LESSON 1: Who is your Hero and what is their Character Arc that represents a transformation? Ned Kelly: Outlaw to Saviour; Wanted Poster to Icon for Good. Identifying the before and after can expose nuances in a character’s thinking and behaviour which help figure out what kind of obstacles I’m going to have to demonstrate they face in themselves in the story. • External Journey: Outlaw, trying to bring down society transforms to man who will save society (even worst examples of people in it) from an existential supernatural threat, even if it costs his soul. Not trying to destroy his enemies, but stop an evil because its the right thing to do, no matter his personal cost. What are the Old Ways? Angry, fatalistic, righteous, destructive, suspicious, focussed on own plight and thinks that’s the world. Thinks love is pleasure, good times and alliance. What are the New Ways? Accepting of what he’s done to contribute to his problems; sense of responsibility not blame; must think of the community., and the whole world, knows what love is; it is sacrifice.

Answer the question “What I learned doing this assignment is…?” and put it at the top of your work.

“What I learned doing this assignment is…?”

ANSWER: I’M NOT SURE? However, when one breaks down the “bigger picture” of my protagonist into small more manageable parts, or beats, a CLEAR PICTURE and easy to understand path of the Protagonist does emerge! 🙂

    JAYE’S TRANSFORMATIONAL JOURNEY

What I learned is that the transformational journey is necessary to draw in an audience. A journey alone is not enough.

I’m still working this concept, so it s still in its infantile stages, but here’s what I decided to go with (of course, this is a first draft and is subject to changes and improvements!):

    My Hero:
An arrogant superhero who thinks he’s perfect because he’s been blessed with charm and superpowers, one of which is insane good luck. He feels deserving of his unearned attributes. A freak accident causes a scrambling of superpowers and gives him a rude awakening.

Internal Journey He will learn self-awareness and humility, and other things that I haven’t come up with yet.

External Journey: He will have to work with his antagonist to help restore what has gone wrong.

    Old ways: Arrogance, privilege, elitism.

New ways: Humility, respect for fellow man, attitude of gratitude.

What I learned doing this assignment is…
A clearer delineation between internal and external journey

Hero is Jane (generic name for now)

Jane’s Internal Journey: from untrusting (of others and self) and fearful to trusting and courageous

Jane’s External Journey: from silent witness to testifying in court

What are the Old Ways and New Ways?
Old: no relationships; afraid of everything; always prepared to run
New: friends, boyfriend, family; no longer afraid; settles in

Mary and Rich Chamberlin’s Script Transformational Journey

What we learned doing this assignment is brainstorming the internal and external journey of each of our main (protagonist) characters allows us to envision the comedic scenes that will organically sprout from these ironic setups.

Who is your Hero and what is their Character Arc that represents a transformation?

Morty, a 60 YO widowed and recently downsized fireman who is 1 class short of earning his bachelor of arts degree, hocks everything except his jalopy and returns to college and his passion, writing screenplays. In Screenwriting 420 class he’s paired with Jax, a 20-something goof-off with an attitude, to complete a collaborative project, but their divergent POVs makes it likely they won’t make it to end of semester (let alone opening night) alive.

    Morty

Internal Journey: From disillusioned, desperate and stuck in the past to relishing and celebrating a new life journey – of hope and letting go.

External Journey: From ignored cast off who’s out of sync with the world to a cool dude full of life.

    Jax

Internal Journey: From unmotivated and introverted TO having a great purpose and ready to show the world.

External Journey: From throw away who is too timid/unconfident to seek love TO accepting responsibility for himself and others he loves.

    3. What are the Old Ways and New Ways?

    Morty

Old: Throw away, naive, lonely, desperate, tech handicapped, disillusioned, stubbornly brave

New: Learns skills anew, Welcomes new love, unconditionally brave, collaborative

    Jax

Old: Throw away, unmotivated, introverted, a bit desperate

New: Becomes brave, develops self worth, lets his talent shine, lets go of parental approval, collaborative

MacNeith – Lesson 1 The Transformational Journey

What I learned doing this assignment was creating ideas while doing the excessive and clarifying who my main character is, where they are coming from and who they become through their transformational journey.

My hero is James Gunn, a shy music teacher who falls in love with new teacher Marion.

Arc Beginning: Shy James likes Marion, but is fearful of her, feeling unworthy of a ladies love.

Arc Ending: James proposes to Marion and they have a Scottish wedding.

Internal Journey: James goes from being cowardly around women, especially with Marion, and becoming confident and brave.

External Journey: James is a prim and proper guy, and transforms into an emotionally stronger and handsomely scruffy Celtic rock bagpiper.

Old Ways: Lacks confidence with women
    Perfectionist
    Classical Musician
    Fearful of marriage.

New Ways: Self confident with women
    Visionary
    Bagpiper & Celtic rock musician
    Proposes to Marion.

    Karin
    Hallén’s Transformational Journey.

What I learned doing this assignment is what the internal challenges of my hero are and how and why they influence his behavior. I also learned where he needs to “land” after the character arch is complete and what changes need to take place internally for the external changes to be believable.

    This
is a brand new idea that I’m starting with today. Genre
comedy/drama. Working title: “As You Wish”

    My
    broad-stroke idea is this: A
failing and lonely self-help speaker gets an unexpected opportunity
to turn his life around when he finds a lamp containing a grumpy
genie who has one person left to grant wishes before he’s free to
    retire.

    Here
are the answers to the questions we received a few days ago.

    My
Hero is: George, a failing personal development expert, public
speaker and writer on tour with his new book. His
improbably goal is to become successful and famous, which is
improbable due to his attitude and internal shortcomings.

    The
opposition is in his mind the genie who refuses to collaborate but
in reality his own beliefs, fears, and negativity.

    The
interesting world worth exploring is the dynamic between George
and the genie and their opposites leading to a gradual, reluctant
friendship and ultimately learning from each other. Another
interesting world to explore is how the self-help speaker’s modern-day take on personal development and happiness compares to how the genie’s. The genie has been trapped in the lamp for 3000 years, with all that time to
think, mature, and develop a treelike wisdom, yet it’s unaware of modern-day complications. And how the two clash and ideally
could merge for a greater whole.

    This
concept is unique because it is a different take on an odd couple
“buddy comedy” that I haven’t seen before.

    My
Hero is George, a self help writer, speaker, and teacher.

    Internal
    Journey:

    From:

    – weak

    – misguided/lost

    – needy

    – insecure

    – fearful

    – lonely
    and sad

    – whiny

    to

    – strong

    – giving

    – positive

    – confident

    – expansive

    External
    journey:

    Old
    ways:

    – Whining
    about circumstances and complaining.

    – Displaying
    arrogance to hide feeling insecure.

    – Blaming
others and everything around him for failures.

    – Refusal
to see and confront his own shortcomings.

    – Acceptance
    of failure and resignation.

    – Putting
up a fake facade and hiding behind a mask.

    – Constantly
    comparing himself to others.

    – Afraid
to be honest, with himself and others.

    – Focused
primarily on receiving validation and on being seen as successful.

    – Takes
his frustration out on those he has power over.

    New
    ways:

    – Having
the courage to trust that things can work out.

    – Takes responsibility.

    – Courage
to be honest and act honestly.

    – Stands
    up for himself.

    – Faith
in his abilities and in his message

    – Focus
on contribution and what he can give, rather than get.</font></font>

    – Confident
and worthy regardless of external validation.

    – Generosity

    – Easygoing
    and understanding of others.

    – Emerges
with a new understanding of life that “frees” him.

    – Going
on his mission for a greater cause than himself, beyond validation, a human cause.

What I learned doing this assignment is… the importance of defining the character’s journey before delving into the plot.

Spud Bickman’s Character Arc that represents a transformation:

Internal Journey: Find the courage and self confidence to get the job he really wants (a member of the I-team, investigative reporters)External Journey: Grab hold of a story that will expose corruption in the DOT and the governor’s office

    Spud’s Old Ways

Works the traffic beat, does what he’s told, doesn’t speak up for himself to his boss, avoids confrontation, afraid to pursue what he really wants

    Spud’s New Ways

Investigative reporter, dictates what stories he does, speaks up for himself, not afraid of a fight, confident to pursue what he wants

What I got out of this lesson: How to consider the things that will inform your character’s arc and how to empower my writing. I thought I knew my story, but putting it down like this will improve it a lot and help build the structure better. It is also helping me understand my characters and their motivations better.

    ——————————————————————————————

    Working title: NEON WONDERLAND

A hopeful animated series about love, friendship, and acceptance. It follows an unlikely friendship between a young tree dragon and a raptor.

    by: Kay Hundley

    2. Who is your Hero and what is their Character Arc that represents a transformation?

Entrysk (E) is a young tree dragon who befriends Violet (V), a young Raptor from outside the safe confines of the Sheltered Forest, where the tree dragons reside. They will all go through a transformation, including those in the clan that E holds dear.

    INTERNAL JOURNEYS

E: From blindly believing in the traditions, proud with a disdain for anything different to accepting and fighting for things she took the time to get to understand.

Clan: From afraid of change and anything that may disrupt their way of life to being open to outsiders and new traditions.

Violet: From timid and afraid to strong and brave.

    EXTERNAL JOURNEYS

E: Blindly follows mother and tradition, dreams of being an elder, frightened of anything different than what she knows to standing up for change and accepting things different than her, by befriending a Raptor.

Clan: Works to break up the friendship and rid the forest of this intruder to accepting and welcoming her.

Violet: Afraid to move without the protection of her special tree dragon friend, bit clumsy and inadvertently getting them into some trouble, to protecting her tree dragon and saving the missing dragon egg.

    3. What are the Old Ways and New Ways?

    OLD WAYS

    E:

    – A dislike for things outside what she already knows.

    – Protects the raptor out of tradition of being the protector, pride.

    – Believes (only) in the ways of the dragon clan

    – Curious, but unwilling to do things outside the order of the clan elders/tradition

    – Somewhat serious and rigid as she prepares for elderdom (someday)

    Clan:

The tree dragons are a small clan with very prescribed ways of doing things. They are a happy community steeped in tradition, afraid of change, certainly dislikes outsiders.

    V:

    – Unsure and afraid, timid

    – Doesn’t like to be left alone

    – Always hides in E’s wing for protection

    – Always the first to run from something

    – Clumsy

    – A bit goofy

    NEW WAYS

    E:

    – Questions and stands up to authority

    – Goes against tradition/teachings to go out of her way to be with the raptor and protect the raptor out of love and friendship.

    – Suggests other possibilities than dragon lore

    Clan:

    – Accepts something – and someone – new to their community.

    – Restructures some tenets/processes to bring raptor into their fold.

    V:

    – Fiercely fights to protect E when she gets into trouble

    – Saves the missing egg (that she inadvertently knocks out of the nest)

    – Leaves the comfort of Es wing to speak to the Elder dragons

    – Gets serious about being with the dragon clan

By having to think and respond to the questions, I have thought more about the man’s destination rather than instances along the way of his journey.

Who is your Hero and what is their Character Arc that represents a transformation?

Internal Journey: Form being unsure of his mental and spiritual stability to helping others obtain their own mental and spiritual stability. External Journey: From demon possession to being possessed by God.

3What are the Old Ways and New Ways? Torment as a wild man to peace as a gentle man.

    Stafford’s Transformational Journey

What I learned from this lesson is that your story is only as interesting as your lead’s journey. You have to take the reader/audience on a ride while they observe everything transpiring in the protagonist’s life. From he/she’s starting point — the obstacle/villain they have to face — strategizing a way for them to achieve whatever they’re trying to accomplish.

Hero/Protagonist: Mateo Vargas – A young software engineer, on the rise at his new job. He’s been engaged to his fiancé for 2 years. Things go left when Mateo makes a mistake; affecting he and those around him.

Internal Journey: He goes from witty and curious to ashamed and in fear of his life.

External Journey: Mateo cheats on his fiancé with Glorivette, and when he tries to break things off, Glorivette becomes aggressive, deranged, and an ominous-being who endangers Mateo and anyone who tries to come between them. Mateo tries to do everything in his power to stop Glorivette before it’s too late.

Old Ways: Witty, sharp, cheerful, curious, cheater.

New Ways: Survivalist, cautious, faithful, fearful, frustrated.

    Laura Woodworth’s transformational journey

Who is your hero and what is their character arc that represents a transformation?

Internal Journey: For Dell: from weak, afraid, hiding in insignificance and happy with that place – to strong, fearless, brave and committed like her grandmother Adelle

External Journey: For Dell: from a small-time photographer to a White House photographer, positioned to be the one who can save the country.

What are the Old Ways and New Ways?

    Old Ways for Dell:

    · Ignorant of the corruption around her

    · Naïve of the devices of the enemy and their deceptive friendship, using her

    · Small time photographer

    · Afraid, hiding behind her camera

    · Doesn’t believe in herself and what she is capable of outside of her photography

    · Naïve of her Jewish heritage and the bravery of her grandparents in the resistance movement of WWII

    · Wary of Michael’s friendship and his Christian family

    · Accepts things “as they are” and doesn’t see deeper into the corruption behind the government

New Ways for Dell: She becomes a modern-day Esther who can save the nation

Sees the corruption in the government, in the White House

Sees the deception of those using her, manipulating her

Recognizes the true friendship of Michael and his family, the Christian believers resisting the government

Understands the importance of the resistance and the cause

Finds out her heritage and the courage of her ancestors

Becomes courageous, brave and committed, willing to risk her life and position to save the nation

What I learned doing this assignment is to clearly define the transformational arc my lead character must go through for this story to be engaging. It also helped me better define the role of my character in this story.

    Judith Abingdon Transformational journey

What I learned during this assignment is :

I really need to flush out these characters, get them into my head, know what and how they think. Create their world, history, and future.

Juliet is my protagonist, she is a curious young female about to embark on adulthood in the explosive times of the ’70s, her previously sheltered life is at odds with what she is seeing on TV, in the news, and coming out of her radio. She must escape the small town mindset and the demands of her parents and experience life on a grander scale and become a new, freer version of herself.

    Internal Journey:<div>

She must overcome the ritual expectations projected onto young people: go to college, get a job, get married, go into debt, lose yourself.

External Journey: She must gain confidence, speak up more, express her desires and ultimately make a big move.

    3. What are the Old Ways:

obey the rules, only talk to certain types of people. follow the conventional route

    New Ways:

be outgoing, make her own decisions, take risks, make her own kind of life

Kendra is a person who is hiding in plain sight. She lives alone and has a few relationships. Her biggest fear is that someone will find out her identity. Deep down inside she wants to change but fear keeps her in hiding.

    External Journey

At the end of her journey, she realizes that she is strong and capable and does not need to be recued by anyone. Once she reveals her true self the fear disappears, and a fearless fighter is born.

    Old Ways.

    Guilt over past events.

    Refuses to help anyone.

    Afraid.

    Unwilling to Love

    New Ways

Tells her family what she did in the past and ask forgiveness.

    Finds love and excepts love.

Subject line: Daisy Khalifa’s Transformational Journey

What I learned doing this assignment:

I learned more about character and the imperative of having your main character change, grow, and have a new worldview by the end. I learned that I must look for that progression and ensure it is happening, so that my story is engaging enough to keep viewers “rooting” for my hero.

    Internal Journey:

Mia Pauley, 31, is a single girl who lives and works as far away from her family and hometown as possible. She cares about her family but wants distance, though she has not necessarily found happiness in her adopted hometown, and feels that she is “blocked” and unable to be in love, or have success. Instead, she is wild, has lovers, and lives life on the edge. She questions herself, her childhood and the emotional “damage” her family created and sustained for her and for themselves. By the end of the film, Mia has seen her family for all of their failures and accepts these serious flaws—she no longer wishes she could erase them or that they never happened. Mia breaks through her self-imposed barriers and her heart is open, her life is calm again and she sees clearly the gift she has been given of a good, happy life.

    External Journey:

Mia is unsure, indecisive and lives life tentatively, full of worry and insecurity, though she is a good person. By the end, Mia has endured, through a chance cosmic encounter with a man from an earlier time in history, a view of her “alternate life and reality” and, while tempted to live it, makes an even more bold decision to accept what she was dealt. Mia’s encounter with alternate events of her life force her to make difficult decisions that further illustrate her capacity to do what is kind and loving and right with the universe.

“From indecisive, timid thinker in her own world to an experienced, informed observer and ‘traveler’ of time, who commandeers history and events over which she has control, and that she knows she can change for better or for worse.”

    Mia OLD ways:

    1. Passionate and wild; hiding low-self esteem.

    2. Unclear, vague though intensely smart. Untapped, dormant talent.

    3. Bitter, mad, judgmental.

    Mia NEW Ways:

    1. Peaceful and calm, resolved and free of heavy emotional worries.

    2. Focused, successful, wiser; aware of her powers and intellectual gifts.

    3. Capable of being in love.

What I learned in doing this assignment is, that if I line up the Old/ New ways the character arc becomes MUCH clearer and also clarifies my objectives. I had too many other ‘things’ I was adding to the story that were not essential—the dialogue needs to tell the story.

I appreciate the ‘empowerment’ message from Hal. I also discovered that having the right mindset can be the key to my success!

    Romance Genre

My Main Character is Peter. He is a lawyer for a firm in Chicago. Type-A personality who will discover that ‘letting loose’ a bit from conformity can be fun and rewarding.

    Old Ways:

Likes routine, likes cold(er) weather, doesn’t veer out of his comfort zone too often, last girlfriend left him because she thought he was ‘boring.’ He feels he is solid, reliable, dependable. Not sure being impulsive is a good thing to be—or that it leads to good decisions. Likes doing things alone

    New ways:

Challenges himself to embrace spontaneity Questions himself as to why he isn’t more impulsive (he becomes more impulsive to fun opportunities) Find that he likes warm-weather sports, Acts kinder. Falls for the girl… J

    Meg Stout’s Transformational Journey

What I learned doing this assignment is a quick way of getting an overarching view of what the “point” of the story will be.

For the 30 day screenplay, I’ll be working on a feature film adaptation of The Norman Queen.

My heroes are Emma of Normandy and Knutr of Denmark (aka Canute the Great).

Arc: Emma and Knutr start as pre-teens whose youthful attraction seems doomed by Emma’s betrothal to Prince Harald, a dynastic marriage intended to unite Normandy and Denmark.

By the end, Emma and Knutr have overcome intense opposition and unite to bring peace to the English kingdoms (of which Emma had become queen).

Internal Journey: Each has an internal journey taking them from marginalized young people to mature political operators.

External Journey: They start as young people whose lives are dictated by others and end as the royal person able to command their respective forces and negotiate a peaceful end to an extended war.

    Old Ways

    – Doing what they are told they must do

    – Shy of expressing their feelings about the other, knowing it cannot be

    – Naive about the international politics that govern their futures

    New Ways

    – Doing whatever it takes to secure peace for their families and peoples

    – Bold, finding ways to unite despite serious complications

    – Extremely knowledgeable about how to achieve the peace they both yearn for, both through their union, targeted mercy, and necessary killings
PS – I’m on vacation this week, so I might lag a bit here and there.

What I learned doing this assignment is that breaking down the journey and changes into smaller pieces helps see the character and creates new story ideas.

Martin, a young man who believes his movie star mother abandoned him, attempts to find her, only to discover that he was adopted and that he has a brother who is trying to kill his real mother. Martin, his newly discovered relatives, his girlfriend, and his adopted family are trapped in a creepy old house and Martin must figure out who to save before they are all killed by his chainsaw wielding brother.

    Internal
    Journey:
From not taking anything seriously, to realizing the importance
    of family and commitment.

    External
    Journey:
From the handyman that no one respects, to the savior of a family
    he didn’t know he had.

What are the Old Ways and New Ways?

    Martin’s Old Ways

    Jokes about everything
    Won’t make a commitment
Believes a lie about his family

    Martin’s New Ways

    Fights for his friends
Declares his love for his girlfriend
Learns the true meaning of family

    LESSON 1: THE TRANSFORMATIONAL
    JOURNEY

    What I Learned: There’s much
more to Maya than I initially thought. Because of her choice to
become a Sojourner, much of her personality changed as I focused more
on her character rather than the plot.

    MAYA

    Internal Journey: From
dissatisfied, guilt-ridden, mildly suicidal, and resentful of her
family to more content, remorseful, appreciative of her family.

    External Journey: From a teen
girl to a space- and time-hopping Sojourner (and maybe back again)

    Old Ways:

    Ignorant and dismissive of any
    higher power

    Dissatisfied and bored with her
    ordinary, provincial life

Willing to stand up for those who
    can’t stand up for themselves

    Fierce sibling rivalry with her
    older sister

    Sick of her parents’ rules,
    meddling, autocratic domination, etc.

    Inadvertently commits a crime and
hurts someone trying to get revenge for a friend, is afraid she’ll
be caught, feels guilt for her action

    Wants out of her life,
contemplates suicide, jumps at chance to be Sojourner

    New Ways:

Aware of higher power, embraces it

Finds joy and surprise in ordinary
life, still doesn’t love the everyday banalities

    Selfless and self-aware, still
wiling to stand up for others

Realizes how much her sister loves
her and how much she’s learned from her

Realizes the depth of her parents’
love and her own love for her family, misses them

Desires to make things right and
pay the price for her crime

    Has been conflicted between
continuing as a Sojourner and returning to her human life

    30 Day Script – #3

    Assignment: Character Profiles

What I learned doing this assignment is, how important it is to get these traits, feel them all the way down to your fingertips and breathe them into each of your characters.

What draws us to this character?

    JESSICA:

Traits: She is impulsive, thinks she can do anything, even when she hits a wall.

Subtext: Her negative childhood has prepared her to be ready for anything.

Flaws: Shyness that she always manages to camouflage with bravado.

Values: Her sense of loyalty makes her the best friend, and agent in the world.

Irony: Real estate requires a bravado she still does not believe she has.

    MICHAEL:

Traits: He is a pleaser who is invested in this. He sells real estate to pay the but would prefer to be chef-ing.

Subtext: He’s Italian – so at heart he’s a lover!

Flaws: He’s a pleaser even when this is not the best choice for him.

Values: His Italian grandfather has instilled the old fashioned values to honor the family first.

Irony: Although he is a pleaser he draws the line when it comes to chef-ing. He alone is the master in his kitchen.

    HENRY:

Traits: He has to always be number one, will do just about anything to stay on top. Even though he falls hard for Jessica he still needs to beat her every month with his sales volume.

Subtext: Except for a very loving, doddering grandmother, he has never really been loved. His father has always rejected him. His top producer career pursuit is about showing his father.

Flaws: He is fastidiously clean to the point of obsessive.

Values: He values family and his life is driven by their expectations of him.

Irony: He appears stiff and formal he is a great dancer – it’s what he really wants to do.

    SHIRLEY: (Jessica’s mother)

Subtext: She pushes Jessica into her achievements but all she really wants is to be a grandmother

Flaws: She talks too much, wears her heart on her sleeve.

Values: Her family values are not to be questioned.

    Irony:
She too has lost her husband at an early age and raised her daughter as
    a solo parent.

    30 DAY SCRIPT – ASSIGNMENT #4

    RAE’S CHARACTER INTERVIEWS:

What I learned this assignment is … this conversation never runs out. Problem is I run out of steam and want to get onto the next thing.

HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH CHARACTERS. GAIN MORE CLARITY ON LEAD CHARACTERS & THE STORY.

    INTERVIEW YOUR CHARACTERS:

SELECT A CHARACTER – HAVE A CONVERSATION – THEY ARE WILLING TO ANSWER ANYTHING!

USE THE 12 QUESTIONS ON PAGE 2.

    PROTAGONIST: JESSICA JOHNSON

Tell me about yourself – I’m shy, unspoilt, someone who does not expect to be given something for nothing. I have worked for everything I have ever gotten so far in my life.

Why do you think you were called to this journey – why you?

God works in mysterious ways. But really I have always though I have something special to contribute.

You are up against —- what is it about them that makes this journey more difficult for you?

Purely because they are men and all have a historical advantage just because they were born men. There have not been too many of them I have looked up to so far in my life. Except for my dear brother, that is.

To survive/accomplish this – are you going to step outside of your box? What changes do you need to make? Which is the most difficult?

I will need to educate myself. I will need to do more than the “less than average man.”

What habits or ways of thinking will you have to let go of?

Co-dependancy. As children, I relied a lot on my sister to take the lead and pave the way for me.

What fears, insecurities, wounds have you held back?

Shyness, self-consciousness, as I sat back and watched my sister excel in most areas.

What skills or expertise make you suited to face this conflict or antagonist?

Lately, when confronted with a challenge I rise to the occasion and have no idea where the courage comes from.

What are you hiding from the other characters? What do you not want them to know?

That I came from lower middle class and worked hard for everything I have today. That I am not as confident as I appear. I put on a good act.

Tell me your side of this conflict/ story?

I have already proved myself in the real estate world. Why should I have to grovel to these men in the commercial real estate biz?

What does it do for your life if you succeed here?

It’s all about me proving myself to me – and maybe my sister who didn’t even have to try – life just fell into her lap.

Ask any other Q’s that will help you.

    ANTAGONIST: HENRY CHEN

    Tell me about yourself –

Well, I grew up a spoilt little Asian kid who got everything he wanted, except the love of his father. It didn’t matter how hard I tried, I was never good enough. School wasn’t easy either – I was always the odd kid in the class room. Just a nerd. So I set out to prove my father wrong and did so. Women were never easy to get to know let alone romance one.

Why do you think you were called to this journey – why you?

To prove myself to my family and then maybe grow up and free myself of them. Maybe find the woman who will help me do this?

You are up against —- what is it about them that makes this journey more difficult for you?

I have created an image that I have it all. This macho real estate savant, but all I really want to do is write my poetry.

To survive/accomplish this – are you going to step outside of your box? What changes do you need to make? Which is the most difficult?

Yes, I should, but I don’t know how. Never had a role model for success.

What habits or ways of thinking will you have to let go of?

Holding back in my personal life. Making real estate my everything. Terrified of girls, women.

What fears, insecurities, wounds have you held back?

It all started with my father. All I wanted was his time, and his love – but he was always running his stupid market.

I was never validated by my father, except maybe for a few college professors.

What skills or expertise make you suited to face this conflict or antagonist?

I’m smarter than most. That the only thing that has gotten me strokes so far in my life.

What are you hiding from the other characters? What do you not want them to know?

When I graduated college summa cum laude, I was a nerd who knew nothing about life and just wanted to write poetry.

What do you think of? You mean besides the next deal — women, how to find a lover and a wife.

Tell me your side of this conflict/ story?

I need to be on top of my game in this business, always on top. That’s the only way I know.

What does it do for your life if you succeed here?

I will always have more of a life than my father. If I find the right woman, maybe I’ll forget this business and go live in Tokyo. Or maybe I’m gay?

Ask any other Q’s that will help you.

    PROTAGONIST: MICHAEL FIORE

    Tell me about yourself –

Why do you think you were called to this journey – why you?

You mean why am I a pleaser who always comes off second best? I don’t know how it happened. I suppose my mother protected me a tad too much from getting hurt by life.

You are up against —- what is it about them that makes this journey more difficult for you?

When my father and then my brother died my passion for just about anything in life was lost in me. I spent most of my life trying to make it up to my mother. You could say women have kind of dominated me.

To survive/accomplish this – are you going to step outside of your box? What changes do you need to make? Which is the most difficult?

Stand up for my deservingness. Own my talent. Be a great chef.

What habits or ways of thinking will you have to let go of?

Always worrying about my mother’s well being and happiness.

What fears, insecurities, wounds have you held back?

I’ve had to be the man in my family and always felt I was not enough.

What skills or expertise make you suited to face this conflict or antagonist?

I need to outsmart Henry and win Jessie’s heart. She’s the one.

What are you hiding from the other characters? What do you not want them to know?

That I have been dependent on women most of my life – I am not a leader.

    What do you think of?

    Cheffing.

Tell me your side of this conflict/ story?

I know Henry does not have the social skills I have, especially around women. May the best man win.

What does it do for your life if you succeed here?

I get the girl and gain my own self respect.

Ask any other Q’s that will help you.

30 DAY SCRIPT #5 (USE THIS TO START WRITING SCRIPT)

What I learned doing this assignment is you have to jump in and just go with it. If I try to organize my thought too much there is not much there to write about.

    CONCEPT:

A woman sets out to prove herself in the male dominated world of commercial real estate and then learns she has the power to rise above all of them.

    MAIN CONFLICT

Jessie is a top achiever who does not know how or where to stop. Until she decides to tackle the male dominated field of commercial real estate.

    OLD WAYS

Jessie couldn’t wait for deals to be handed to her, instead she would go knock on doors and make it happen.

    NEW WAYS

Hires several workmen to help make the repairs.

    MIDPOINT TURNING POINT

At the end of Jessie’s first year she has listed so many properties she earns “Rookie of the Year” and starts up a team of agents. Henry, the company’s top producer, is so jealous he asks her out under false pretenses and tries to pick her brain. They have a mutual interest, Haiku. Challenge each other with poems every day. Henry falls in love with her but she learns he has been stealing her client names and breaks her ties with him.

    RETHINK EVERYTHING

Now that Jessie is on top, surpassing Henry. Something is missing. She wants a little brother for her daughter. Goes looking for sperm donors.

30 DAY SCRIPT – DAY 7 (LIST THE MAIN BEATS OF ANTAGONIST)

THE THEME: LIFE TAKES TOO MANY TURNS

What I learned in this assignment is, when I let the story flow in beats through these two characters… the ideas just kept coming and wouldn’t stop.

    PASS #1

INTERWEAVE THE THEME THROUGH OUT THE BEAT SHEET:

    1. JESI THINKS ALL SHE WANTS IS TO KEEP EXPANDING HER REAL ESTATE SKILLS BY SURROUNDING HERSELF WITH MEN SHE CAN LEARN FROM.

    2. SHE LEARNS IT’S NOT THAT EASY, FINDS THE MEN ARE NARCIIISISTS WHO GUARD THEIR EVERY CLIENT LEAD.

    3. SHE’S SURPRISED AND DELIGHTED THAT SHE APPEARS THIS BIG A THREAT TO THEM.

    4. JESI LEARNS TO PLAY THEIR GAME. MISLEADS THEM INTO THINKING SHE IS SOFT HEADED AND EASY PREY.

    5. HER HANDIMAN BUSINESS BECOMES HER BIGGEST DISTRACTION – DRIVES HER MALE COMPETITORS CRAZY.

    6. WHEN HER CLIENT BASE GAINS MORE MOMENTEM THAN THE TOP PRODUCERS.

    7. JESI GETS THE MANAGER AND BROKER’S ATTENTION WHEN SHE GAINS TOP PRODUCER STATUS.

    8. SUDDENLY HER PURSUITS ARE REPLACED WITH A DESIRE FOR MOTHERHOOD. JUST ONE BABY, THAT’S ALL SHE WANTS BUT IT HAS TO HAPPEN SOON FOR SHE’S TURNING FORTY.

    9. SHE STARTS AN ON-LINE SEARCH – “IT’S LOVE AT FIRST LOG IN!”

    10. NOW SHE’S PREGNANT AND ALSO JUGGLING THE CAREER AND HANDIMAN BIZ. MICHAEL JUMPS IN TO HELP AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP CHANGES. SUDDENLY HE’S MORE INTERESTING TO JESI THAN THE SPERM DONOR.

    PASS #2

    BUILD IN THE ANTAGONIST JOURNEY

    1. HENRY IS IMPRESSED AT FIRST AS JESI STARTS BUILDING HER CLIENT BASE. BUT THIS SOON TURNS TO A GUARDED ATTEMPT TO HIDE HIS CONTACTS FROM HER AND NOT SHARE ANY OF HIS PROSPECTS OR HIS LEADS.

    2. HENRY COERSES THE OFFICE MANAGER, MAKES UP A STORY, JESI IS TOO HORMONAL, DEVOID OF ANY PURPOSE OR STRUCTURE – A TYPICAL FEMALE, ALL OVER THE BOARD.

    3. BUT ONCE “JESI’S HOME HELP BIZ” TAKES OFF AND IS HUGELY SUCCESSFUL HENRY IS WORRIED. HIS CLIENTS ARE BECOMING HER CLIENTS WITHOUT HIS KNOWLEDGE.

    4. HENRY STARTS STALKING JESI – LOOKING FOR CLUES AS TO HOW SHE PULLED THIS OFF – HOW COULD SHE BE SO SUCCESSFUL?

    5. HENRY DECIIDES TO CAPTIVATE HER IN OTHER WAYS – THROUGH HIS HAILU.

    6. HE STARTS HIS DAY BY WRITING A HAIKU TO HER – THEN STARTS WRITING THEM WITH HER DAILY – LOOKS FOR COMPETITIONS – ANYTHING TO DISTRACT HER FROM THE BUSINESS.

    7. WHEN SHE ASKS HIM TO BE A SPERM DONOR IT SLAYS HIM – HE LOOKS AT HER DIFFERENTLY – THEN FALLS IN LOVE WITH HER.

    8. WHEN HENRY TELLS JESI HE LOVES HER HE LOSES HER. SHE DOESN’T HAVE TIME FOR A MAN. BESIDE WHEN SHE ADDS A NEWBORN CHILD TO HER AGENDA ALL OF HER TIME WILL BE INVESTED THERE

    9. HE’S HURT, REJECTED – HE REVOLTS AND SHUTS DOWN THEIR HAIKU ADVENTURE. BUT HE MISSES HER MORE THAN SHE MISSES HIM.

    10. HENRY’S JEALOUS BECAUSE JESI HAS MOVED ON TO MICHAEL, BROUGHT HIM INTO HER HOUSE HELP BUSINESS – AND NOW MICHAEL HAS ALSO BEEN BUSY CONVINCING HER TO HAVE HIS BABY.

    11. HENRY’S ONLY HOPE IS TO OFFER JESI A SHARE OF HIS CLIENTS JESI AND A PARTNERSHIP. OR ELSE HE FEELS ALL IS LOST. THROUGH ALL THIS HENRY IS SOFTENING, NOT SO CUT THROAT, AND EVERYONE IS NOTICING THIS CHANGE BUT HIM.
