Assignment for Lesson 2
This lesson helped me organize my story and search for High Concept. The exercises are helpful to help me develop the hook. These are good principles for screenwriting.
1. From pre-lesson:
A. Contained Setting: Hospital room, but not unique
B. Unique Device: race to cure. Race to dialysis. Perhaps Journal as a character
C. Unique Monster/Villain: Death personified approaching
D. Mystery: Is it death or an angel coming
E. Impossible goal: have marriage, family, become good poet
F. Unique layers: outward health concerns, inwards spiritual concerns
2. Ask the right questions: Having to do with characters with terminal illness, what haven’t we seen before?
3. List components of current concept:
a. hero keeps a journal which reveals inner thoughts
b. does not plan on dying
c. upbeat in face of circumstances
d. develops writing talent
4. Best constrained story: young woman in ill health, self taught, develops talents from bed.
5. High Concept yet to be developed (needs more study and brainstorming)
6. How does this process work for me? It helps me develop my story. I learned how to brainstorm concepts to find strong hook.
