    Jerry’s Creating Irony!
What I learned doing this assignment is the more mining you do the more you have to use in the future

    ASSIGNMENT 1: GoT s1

    Character Irony:
Tyrion Lannister is regarded by the Starks as an enemy. They don’t trust or listen to him when he trys to distance himself from his family.

Ned Stark is a loyal servant of the King however his loyalty and friendship is rewarded by being handed a poison chalice.

    Situational Irony:
The Starks are secure in the North and isolated from the quallels between the greater families in the South. By Robert bringing Ned in as his Hand he involves the Starks in southern court politics.

    Deadline: 24 hours
    ASSIGNMENT 2: Your Show

Look back through your previous assignments and find at least 20 different situations or character components that you could go opposite to create irony.
With each, brainstorm ideas for ways it could go opposite.
Select the ones that work well for the show and share the character and situational irony ideas with us.

    Character Irony:
Linda wants to be reconciled with Darran but her activities in the churh draw he closer to Wee Henry
A youthful Darran murdered a man for Big Nasty and has left that life behind but now in seeking an ally to try and stop Linda he finds himself being drawn back into that world.
Wee Henry genuinely loves Linda but his love of money is proving too strong
Roaring Cecil wants the power and status that a Mega Church will bring to him but to get it he will have to betray his current flock.

    Situational Irony:
Linda wants what’s best for her people and neighbourhood but in blocking the Developers she’s damaging short-term investment and damaging her position.
Linda thinks that Roaring Cecil will be helping her defend the Tin Tabernacle unaware that he and Big Nasty were behind the unital approach to developers.
Progress requires investment which brings change, and corruption.
The Politicians who represent Linda’s people are conniving with their enemies in private whilst demonising them in public.

    CJ’s Creating Irony

What I learned from this assignment is the power of irony—compared to big plot twists, irony feels as if it will actually evoke more emotional connection from the reader, perhaps because it’s built over time and its impact isn’t felt until the audience “sees” what’s really going on beyond the surface action?

    ASSIGNMENT 1:

    Mr. Robot’s ironies:

Character: Elliot suffers mental illness and assumes everyone around him doesn’t, yet almost every other character also suffers from unacknowledged mental illnesses, a few more extreme than Elliot’s, such as Tyrell’s homicidal tendencies.

Situational: Everyone Elliot sees as an ally ultimately betrays him and almost all his “enemies” end up helping him in his mission (for their own reasons)

    ASSIGNMENT 2:

    CJ’s Patient X ironies:

    Character:

    *Doctor becomes patient

    *Killer saves lives

    *Dying woman falls in love

    *Nuns breaking rules/law

*Doctor creating “miracle” drug is also serial killer, killing experimental subjects

*Mother willing to harm/kill her daughter to gain power

    Situational:

    *Doctor forced to kill

    *Cop becomes a victim

*Kidnapper isn’t hurting kids but saving them

    *Illegitimate son inherits everything

*Outcast returns to become leader who saves community

*Disease that kills creates powers used to save lives

What I Learned – Irony is not as difficult as I thought at first. There are lots of places where it can be introduced, and it creates subtext.

    Hilton Garrett, Creating Irony

    Example Show – Breaking Bad

This show is full of irony. Walt’s whole meth thing is pure irony given his prior life. His working with Jesse. His brother-in-law being a DEA agent sitting around the table talking and having no idea what Walt is up to. Hank’s wife being a thief.

    My Show

    Will

Will, who does not want children, provides money for a destitute mother of a young girl

He works to expose Rountree’s corruption when all the while Rountree is responsible for the death of Will’s mother and Will has no idea.

Against his nature he kills one of Santorro’s men.

    Becca

Removes a picture of Will’s mother from their bedroom. (I’m your wife! I’m not dead! I’m alive! You can look at me!!)

Has impromptu sex with the courier when what she really wants is a family with Will

    Rountree

Wants to keep his past under wraps but tries to hire Will – keep your enemies closer

Wants to be free of Santorro but every month accepts his money

    Martaan

Born into near poverty, now elegant and wealthy

Was complicit in the death of Will’s mother and now wants to help him learn the truth

BWTV Module 1 Lesson 11 Discovering Creating Irony

Working Hard every day to become the best writer I can be and as a result I do become the best writer in Hollywood.

What I learned from this assignment is the continued examination and turning over rocks to find new solutions and situations is adding layers to the story.

    Assignment One:

    Title: Breaking Bad

In the last episode, Walter is offered a job and free health care. The irony of this is the man who offered it to him was a college friend.

The stark difference between Walter’s lifestyle and his friends is very evident. Walter gives his friend the most poignant gift, a memory and he is made to feel embarrassed by it.

When Jesse tries to cook meth the quality is nowhere what Walter can do. Prior to this it would have been just fine.

Both men are lost without each other. They belong in the criminal enterprise together even though they don’t really like each other.

Skyler loves him and supports him but she continues to do so even though he really does not step up to the plate for her like he should.

When Jesse tries to get a job, he is offered a menial one at best. He hints at his sales prowess but doesn’t tell them what he sold. It is impossible for him to take the job he is offered since he has made so much more money in the past.

    Assignment two:

    Title: Benjamin Greene

    Genre: Action Drama

Col. Greene turns out to be the one who contacted the Puzzle Works rather than the other way around. This is full of Irony as he promised to leave the Agency for his wife.

Lt. Greene completely trusts his love interest, SGT. Jones. She may be the one that puts him away for life.

Lt. Greene constantly tries to reign in his father’s cruel side but we find out he has killed, sold drugs, and stolen money from drug lords. For a man who portrays himself as his father’s keeper he is a bit shady himself.

SGT. Jones is involved with another agency which could be a huge problem. Col. Greene is aware of it and uses her for disinformation purposes quite well.

Lt. Greene is not faithful to SGT. Jones and has issues that will lead to his eventual down-fall but he proclaims himself to be a career soldier.

SPC. Jones seems like a tech geek and all-around nice guy, but he was involved in the murder of a store clerk in PA.

Col. Greene and his men often ignore Puzzle Works directives stating the total elimination of all evidence, Ironically for reasons of humanity and doing the right thing. The Crew is just as quick to embezzle money and call it their Bahama fund.

The Puzzle Works themselves are questionable at best as they proclaim what they do is for the greater good of the public but is it?

First Sgt. Desmoines is often the first to bark orders and demand Col. Greene do what he must do but the compassionate side of him often prevails.

FBI Agent Stockton presents a respectable front that seems to be beyond reproach but his lust for money and power puts him in compromising positions.

Col. Greene has gone through great lengths to hide his past but his proclivity to kill is not new or unfamiliar to him. His son sees this and questions who his father really is. Col. Greene says one thing and does another.

Situational Irony: As the relationship with the Puzzle Works draws the crew farther and farther away from the military the loyalty between Col. Greene and the military begins to wain as well. Col. Greene has been a career soldier through and through, but he can no longer serve both masters. One must eventually go.

Col. Greene originally just wanted to put in his time and retire but things have changed, now he has been dealt a hand that may undermine all of his hard work.

The same agency Col. Greene works for now may be the one that killed his wife.

The ultimate betrayal and Irony of Col. Benjamin Greene is that his son may be the one that either kills him or sends him to prison for the rest of his life.

This crew is generally tight knit and loyal to each other, but Agent Stockton is a master at finding weaknesses with those who are compromised and exploiting it. In the end, Agent Stockton’s Greed is his undoing.

SGT Jones is dealing with loyalty issues that are causing her internal conflict. The real irony is that she does love Lt. Greene and may have to choose between her job and Lt. Greene.

All three of the leads have put aside money for an exit strategy, but supposedly no one knows the other is doing it.

Col. Greene is a master technician and sees everything that is happening but plays everything close to the vest.

Col. Greene is the antitheses of a hero, but we somehow still root for him. Why?

The old adage, “Just Following Orders” is true here, but it will not save Col. Greene and his crew.

    ASSIGNMENT 1: Example Show

Watch the next episode of your Example Show and notice where irony shows up in this show — both in this episode and throughout the episodes you’ve already seen.
