    Sharon Axcell’s First Three Decisions

What I learned doing this assignment is… that I won’t get it right first time, but best to start. And then it will evolve. Trust in the process!

    1. What is your profound truth?

You have a destiny. Do it!

    2. What is the change your movie will cause with an audience?

To not shy away from their destiny in fear, but take action and claim it.

    3. What is your Entertainment Vehicle that you will tell this story through?

“What I learned doing this assignment is…to identify the profound truth of my story and what change the audience needs to experience and how to bring that about using an entertainment vehicle to deliver it.”

    The Three Decisions:

    Title: Shin’ichi – The Disciple

    1. Profound Truth: A change in one single individual can bring about a change in the destiny of the world.

    2. Audience Change: Inspired to become the one in their own lives

    3. Entertainment Vehicle: Embellished true story (also using the metaphor – pivotal world events which crisscross the protagonist’s journey a la Forrest Gump)

What I learned doing this assignment is the path I am currently on, with my script, will reveal a deeper truth that what I first thought.

    Title: 23 Days Until…

Profound Truth: No matter the obstacles, if you never give up success is waiting.

Audience Change: You must never let initial obstacles stop you from your destiny.

    Entertainment Vehicle: Embellished True Story

    Deb’s First Three Decisions

What I learned doing this assignment is that this story could be told many ways and it’s okay if I don’t make the correct decision right away. My “truth” and “change” were difficult to define. I went through all the different scenarios to discover the “entertainment vehicle”. Unfortunately, I haven’t narrowed it down yet – I have three possible vehicles that could work… and all of them can be changed, that’s the beauty of it.

    Profound Truth:

Attending a Christian church is one of the most essential things you can do in this life.

Which became: What you think you don’t need and don’t want could be the best thing for you.

Or: What may seem simple, dull, or unnecessary may actually be a complex structure with hidden depths and treasures.

Or: There’s more to what meets the eye.

    Audience Change:

The audience now believes that a Christian church is a haven that can give forgiveness and life.

Or: There is a depth and beauty in the Christian church that is worth exploring.

    Entertainment vehicle:

    Metaphor:

Seeking for a hidden treasure in a dark world.

Someone who has something of great value but doesn’t realize it right away.

Eating a meal – good food vs. bad food OR no food vs. processed food vs. real food vs. a gourmet meal.

    Pick a world:

Media: A documentary filmmaker goes on a quest to find out what the difference is between the many churches that can be found within a few miles of her own home. She selects an atheist as her test subject – and documents his journey as he attends each church.

Time travel: Upon his death, a man’s life flashes before his eyes and he carefully examines what mattered most to him.

    The cause is the background:

The lead character is the Pastor of a small liturgical church. The story is about the sibling rivalry between himself and his brother who is a Pastor at an American evangelical megachurch.

    Mary Albanese’s three big decisions.

What I learned this time – allow deeper thoughts to permeate to sink to deeper levels of your decisions.

My script’s profound truth – a special destiny awaits those who listen and dare to take steps towards it.

Change the audience makes – to realize there is a world of choices far greater than the conventional boxes that surround you.

Entertainment vehicle – embellished as it happens conflict/in a (pick a world) dangerous different world few people get to experience.

    Ledona Hentley’s First 3 Decisions

What I learned doing this assignment was these 3 decisions are necessary to flesh out and really help direct your story.

    1. What is my profound truth?

God can change anyone who wants to be changed. A traumatic childhood does not have to dictate your whole life. You don’t have to continue to live in survival mode and settle for less for the remainder of your life, because you had a rough beginning.

    2. What is the change my movie will cause with an audience?

They will decide to committ to their own healing journey, ready to take the first step.

    3. What is the entertainment vehicle?

As it happended and with embellishment if needed, religion, ceremony or special event.

    Gordon’s First Three Decisions

What I learned doing this assignment is the discovery in working a puzzle that helps identify the depth of stories.

Not yet sure which story to take through the program. Here are the candidates:

Script One (title is abbreviated) TMS

Profound truths: Never be afraid to apologize. Never be afraid to search for the truth.

The change your movie will cause an audience: How avoiding an apology enslaves the soul. How braving-up to make amends liberates it.

    Entertainment Vehicle: An embellished happening.

Script Two (title is abbreviated) ITC

Profound truths: 1. Blood is thicker than water. 2. Face your fears and doors will open.

The change your movie will cause an audience: Despite how scary it might be, there is no alternative to standing up against evil.

Entertainment Vehicle: A “cause” is the background – Homelessness

Script Three (title is abbreviated) Title: EFC

Profound truth: Youth and nostalgia are timeless and yet, bittersweet when revisited.

The change your movie will cause an audience: Our minds relive the most adventurous and harrowing times of our youth but with stinging awareness that we can never repeat them.

    Entertainment Vehicle: Metaphor –

Script Four (title abbreviated) Title: ATC

Profound truth: Criticism can dismember all but the bravest who thoughtfully challenge the impossible.

The change your movie will cause an audience. Phenomenal personal growth follows those who smartly adventure beyond what is considered unthinkable.

Entertainment Vehicle: Embellished as it happened.

Script Five (title is abbreviated) Title TRA

Profound truth: Things are not always what they seem.

The change your movie will cause an audience. To be “on guard” for the truth.

    Entertainment Vehicle: Metaphor

    Brendan’s First Three Decisions :

What impressed me about this lesson was the brutal simplicity of getting to the core of why I want to write this screenplay and ultimately make the movie. It puts the audience right there in those very early conceptual decisions. Being a book adaptation, perhaps makes it easier than an original concept. Who knows?

    What is your profound truth?

Love and compassion are more powerful forces than hatred and aggression

What is the change your movie will cause with an audience?

It empowers us to fight for our freedom and be eternally vigilant against fascism.

What is your Entertainment Vehicle that you will tell this story through?

    Rich Whiteside’s First Three Decisions

My Profound Truth: You have to fight to achieve a worthwhile dream or goal. And finding your true desire requires facing and overcoming your fears.

Audience Shift: I want the audience to shift from waiting for things to happen for them in their lives and believe that focus, hard work and mentors can get them where they want to go.

Entertainment Vehicle: Two young kids (down on luck and without real options in life) are forced to make a drug run through the dangerous Canadian and Montana wilderness in the dead of winter.

What I learned from this lesson: I learned to appreciate taking time to consider the shift I want an audience to experience as a part of taking a script from being entertaining and moving it to profound.

BTW, Cheryl, for weeks I have tried every available means to get help without a response. Why? I’ve called and left multiple messages. I’ve email via every available email route.

    3. My entertainment vehicle is a road trip.

    Pauline Cronin’s First Three Decisions

What I learned doing this assignment was a real breakthrough for me…. that my profound truth and the desired change in my audience could dictate who my TRANSFORMATIONAL CHARACTER should be and who will be the CHANGE AGENT. Until now, my protagonist has been my transformational character, a naïve young woman who makes it in the last male bastion against impossible odds (it’s the 80’s). But now I see huge potential for the TRANSFORMATIONAL CHARACTERS to be the men and the company-she-works-for who will go through the change and the young woman as the CHANGE AGENT.

“What would happen if Pollyanna went to work on Wall Street?”

Could a character like this who is smart, hardworking, naïve, truthful, and principled AND also a woman, bring about change in a dog-eat-dog world? Could she challenge their deep-seated beliefs that women don’t belong just by doing her job well and getting results? How hard will they fight to hang onto those beliefs? Will she have to do more than this to prevail? Will chauvinist bosses and peer jealousy be a factor? There is so much room for conflict and humour. It’s possible that this true story could be written as a comedy.

I’m going to run with this for now.

Logline 1: The hiring of a naïve and principled young woman brings about change in the dog-eat-dog world of investment banking.

Logline 2: What would happen if Pollyanna went to work on Wall Street?

    1. Profound truth:

    A. You can be a good person and still succeed in business. OR

    B. Women can succeed without becoming one of the boys. OR

    C. Women can handle the high-stakes world of investment banking. OR

    D. Women do make good partners. (line from the script) OR
    E. Leading by example is a good way to bring about change.

    F. Hiring a woman is good business. [I think this might be the one.]

    2. Audience Change: Audience is inspired to believe one person can make a difference, and that maybe even they can challenge the old ways of thinking.

    3. Entertainment Vehicle: Embellished As-It-Happened Conflict will take place primarily against the heady, high-stakes world of the inside trading floor at a major investment dealer in the years leading up to and following the Market Crash of ’87.

Another possibility is time travel. A young woman from 2023 travels back to the trading floor and she is aghast at what she witnesses. She begins to understand that every woman who has gone before has paved the way for her today.
