LESSON #8 – WHY DO WE CARE?

    CONNIE HOOD

Who might care about these old stories?

My big takeaway is that I now need to move away from my personal fascination of these real people and their adventurous spirits. There is a real disconnect between people who fought things bigger than themselves, and a current culture where we isolate ourselves from others.

Fiction sometimes shares greater truths than reality. This story involves people who confront ambiguous moral codes (PROHIBITION), take risks on behalf of others (CARE/LOVE), and find courage to act.

The proposed outline of LIKABILITY/LOVABILITY; EMPATHY; JUSTIFICATION will help me get to the core/purpose of each line and scene. Hopefully that is enough to engage an audience. I’m going counter to the trend of magic heroes saving the world. I also seem to be with the trend of “based on true stories.” Recently watched a series with real characters and made up stories, Lidia Poet, and loved it.

    Likability / Lovability

    9. Resilient. Processes Cooper’s harsh words without letting him completely break her spirit

    10. True and fair. Engages with picketing community members, but also respects Cooper’s dedication to secure family financial needs

    11. Sympathetic by contrast to Cooper and his callous and dismissive behavior

    12. Strong-willed. Despite the conflict and challenges she faces, Brie doesn’t complain, but takes responsibility for her duties

    Empathy / Distress

    1. Cooper scolds Brie for being poorly organized and makes derogatory comments about her life choices

    2. Brie’s teen daughter, records the argument between her mother and her stepdad to post it on her YouTube channel for amusement. This disrespectful act shows that she is not receiving the support or respect she deserves from her own family.

    3. The sight of local community members picketing in protest against demolishing the fairground is distressing for Brie because of her strong attachment to the fairground,

    4. When Cooper dismisses Brie’s concerns about the fairground and simply states that it’s a done deal, it showcases his disregard for her feelings and opinions.

    5. When Sarah, frustrated with the situation, leaves Brie to deal with Liam on her own, it adds to Brie’s stress and feeling of being overwhelmed.

    6. Cooper’s public endorsement of the commercial plaza further emphasizes his lack of consideration for Brie’s perspective.

    Justification

    1. Abusive behavior of her husband <div>

    2. Lack of respect and support from family

    3. Disrespect of her opinion and feelings

    4. Broken relationship with her father

    5. Previously failed marriage

    6. Dealing with her autistic son without support or help from others

    7. Impending loss of beloved fairground and childhood memories
