Chris’ Character Profiles – Lesson 4

What I learned doing this assignment: Articulating new character dimensions for Moses, Polly, and Bess adds a great deal to the story.

I added “personality dimensions” to my character profiles.

    MOSES KINCAID

    ROLE: Protagonist

CORE TRAITS: Regular guy. Just wants to get along with everyone and live in peace. Loves Polly. Courageous. Evolves from being racially submissive to proud of his black culture.

PERSONALITY DIMENSIONS: Private side: When he speaks to statues or his dog. Expresses true/personal feelings about racism and love. Family side: When he speaks to his wife or daughter. Try to get along, live in peace. Social side: When around or talking with white people. Submissive actions and language.

MOTIVATION: Wants: To get along, live in peace. Goal: To live his life with Polly. Raise his family.

FLAW: The racism of his world inhibits his true self and how he speaks and acts in the presence of white people. Seems fearful and submissive on the surface, but demonstrates great courage at war

WOUND: Traumatized and humiliated when Boss points a gun at him in 1935. He wets himself in front of young Polly.

SECRET: He dies when he is 14.

HIDDEN AGENDA: Have his biracial daughter succeed in a white man’s world.

INTERNAL DILEMMA: Is America a white country? Or a multiracial country where he and his family have a place?

WHAT MAKES MOSES PERFECT FOR THIS ROLE? He is a regular guy, whose regular life would have had a remarkable impact on history (e.g., stopped JFK assassination, prevented Apollo 1 fire, changed interracial marriage laws), if racism had not led to his murder at age 14.

    POLLY (BRAGG) KINCAID

    ROLE: Wife, mother, loves Moses.

CORE TRAITS: Levelheaded, but idealistic. Anti racist. Socially and politically aware. Lives in fear of losing her family. Emotionally strong woman.

PERSONALITY DIMENSIONS: Private: Feels the loss of her birth (white) family because she married a black man. Terrified she will also lose her family with Moses. Family: Tries to elevate Moses’ black self esteem. Protect Bess from racism. Social: Socially woke. Strong independent woman. Anti racist, anti war, pro civil rights.

MOTIVATION: Wants: A racism free America. Needs: To keep her family safe and happy.

WOUND: Sexually assaulted by Cody Baker when Moses is away at war.

SECRETS: She was sexually assaulted by Cody Baker. She knows Moses is the “Unknown” at the lynching memorial.

HIDDEN AGENDA: To develop Moses’ self-esteem about being a black man in America.

INTERNAL DILEMMA: Loving and marrying a black man has alienated her from her white, redneck family, at great cost to her emotionally.

WHAT MAKES POLLY PERFECT FOR THIS ROLE? She is a bridge between the black and white worlds. She is a strong white woman who is not a racist. She believes in a multi-racial America and raises her family to believe it too.

    BESS KINCAID

ROLE: Moses and Polly’s biracial daughter.

CORE TRAITS: Piano virtuoso. Committed and proud of her black culture. Reverse racists tendencies. Politically angry.

PERSONALITY DIMENSIONS: Private: Secretive. Denies her white identity. Overcompensates to fit into black culture. Angry. Family: Worships her black father. Tolerates her white mother. Loves both. Social: Radical black activist. Proud of her black culture. Not averse to violence to battle racism.

MOTIVATION: Want: To be 100% black. Need: To be accepted and successful as a black woman/performer.

FLAW: Hates white people because of racism and oppression and so suppresses her white half.

WOUND: Her father made her pass for white for a Conservatory audition when 18.

SECRET: She is a member of the Black Panther Party in San Francisco.

HIDDEN AGENDA: Overturn white racist American culture by any means necessary.

INTERNAL DILEMMA: Overcompensates to feel more connected to black culture because she is half white.

WHAT MAKES BESS PERFECT FOR THIS ROLE? As a young successful, biracial woman she has not experienced the same level of racism as Moses. She rejects the idea of America as a white country. Believes African Americans should develop their own American culture apart from white America.

Note: When Moses dies in 1935, Bess’s character becomes BETH, a very white version of Polly’s daughter.

    2. TO IMPROVE CHARACTER PROFILES – Developing the character profiles for this assignment allowed me to add greater substance and depth to Moses, Polly and Bess. Good for now. Further development will come when the changes are worked into the story.

    Elizabeth Cochrell, Character Profiles

What I learned in this exercise is that when I clarify their needs and flaws I come up with more interesting emotional moments!

    MISHA TAYLOR 30 YRS OLD.

Role in the Story: Protagonist trying to get her shit together so she can take care of her runaway lost daughter. She trains for a dangerous MMA event and figures out how to fund raise for her women’s shelter.

Core Traits: A loner who tries to do what’s right. Usually takes action only when she is angry about something. Expresses herself by playing music or dancing when happy, hits the punching bag when worried and disciplines herself with yoga to calm down.

Motivation: Want = make enough money to quit stripping and open her women’s shelter. Need= self-esteem, believe she can do more than strip or be a prostitute.

Flaw/Wound: Flaw = Can’t control her rage when she is disrespected. Wound = Shame, her father who taught her martial arts abused her and her jealous drug addicted mother blamed it on her when she told her about it.

Secret/Hidden Agenda: Secret = She said it was self-defense when the meth addict attacked her with a knife, but the truth is she couldn’t stop herself from beating him to death even though he was already out of it. Hidden Agenda = Punish everyone who deserves it!

Internal Dilemma: She enjoys being a sexy dancer but feels guilty that she doesn’t want to put out for anybody she’s not attracted to.

Misha is perfect for the part because she is the epitome of the alluring strength of a woman who when inspired by motherhood is an exciting example of hope for raising the level of respect for women and equality between the sexes.

    REBECCA ROBERTS 15 YRS. OLD.

Role in the Story: Dog whispering daughter who helps Misha develop into a good mother.

Core Traits: Impulsive, caretaker, sensitive, lies to parents.

Motivation: Want/Need: Want = Freedom! Maybe her real mom will give it to her. Need= To feel loved by her mother.

Flaw/Wound: Flaw= She can’t trust anyone but animals. Wound= Low self-esteem when her stepmother told her in anger that she really was the daughter of a drug addict and an orphan.

Secret/Hidden Agenda: Secret= Finally figures out Frank boffs her when she’s unconscious, but feels she deserves it because she thinks it her fault. Hidden Agenda = Make enough money and save it so that she can escape to freedom without anyone telling her what to do.

Internal Dilemma: She really wants to be free and independent but doesn’t know how, she can’t trust adults who give her advice on how to do it.

Rebecca is perfect for the role because she is the most vulnerable victim of a serial sex abuser which transforms her mother Misha’s rage into something more noble towards defeating male chauvinists for the betterment of society.

    EMILY ROBERTS 60 YRS OLD.

Role in the Story: Antagonist who tries to demoralize Misha, regain control of her stepdaughter, make sure her corrupt husband stays in power.

Core Traits: Narcissist, Insecure, Controlling, Deceitful Materialistic.

Motivation: Want/Need: Want = Control everything, the family’s high social status and use her husband’s political power. Need= The confidence to survive on her own without her cheating husband.

Flaw/Wound: Flaw= Lack of self-confidence Wound= Her mother said she was a loser because she couldn’t marry a millionaire.

Secret/Hidden Agenda: Secret= She hates Frank for his cheating. Hidden Agenda = Divorce him once she gets Rebecca back so she can get the big alimony benefits and child support.

Internal Dilemma: She wants to suck it up and stay married but can’t stand it when her husband cheats on her and her stepdaughter runs away. So she takes her hate out on her young pretty step daughter.

Emily Roberts is perfect for the role because her selfish soul-draining ways become the driving force that send our heros on their journey to greater self-esteem and happier lives.

MAYOR FRANK ROBERTS 60 YRS OLD.

Role in the Story: Antagonist against women and he gets away with all kinds of women’s abuse because of his money and power.

Core Traits: Charming, Intelligent, Cold Hearted, Sociopathic sex addict.

Motivation: Want/Need: Want = Win the election again. Need= To be able to control women, especially for his sexual gratification.

Flaw/Wound: Flaw= He can’t control his sexual desire. Wound= His mother emotionally abused him as a child.

Secret/Hidden Agenda: Secret= he has been dosing Rebecca and getting sex from her unknown to her because of drugs. Hidden Agenda = He’s been extorting and putting money away to buy an island and escape from the family after this last term is over.

Internal Dilemma: He loves being admired in the spotlight but must hide his true nature from almost everyone he admires or cares about.

Mayor Frank is perfect for the role because he is so despicable that his feminine victims eventually rise up to destroy him in a rage of pride and growth.

    Day 4 Character Profiles

I learned one more way to add emotion to Selma.

    1. Name: Selma

Role in the Story: Protagonist. She is the counselor who must convince Elizabeth to leave her abusive husband.

Core Traits: guilt-ridden because she believes she is responsible for her mother’s death, distrustful because she could never trust her father when she was a child, lies when she feels cornered because she is afraid of being in trouble, a capable counselor, self-sufficient.

Motivation: want—to pay a hospital bill. To save Elizabeth from harm. Need—to ease her guilt by atoning for her mother’s death.

Flaws—She trusts no one and lies when she feels cornered.

Wound—her father’s abuse culminating in her watching him kill her mother.

    Secret—She lies to Elizabeth.

Internal dilemma—She is afraid of Elizabeth’s anger and wants her to leave. / To keep her job, she must save Elizabeth. To increase Selma’s emotion a) Highlight this in the script. B) make her more and more anxious as the end of the 6 days approaches.

What makes this character perfect for this story?—She fulfills the concept and the story’s need by being the only person who can save Elizabeth. Drives the conflict by telling the lie and pushing Elizabeth to realize that her husband is not a good man.

    2. Name: Elizabeth

Role in the story: Antagonist. She is Selma’s first client and the abused wife.

Core Traits: Loyal, kind to those who need her help, angry, distrustful. She believes her husband is a good man.

Motivation: Want—to be happy, to take home something from the shelter that will help her, to find her lost self, to have her husband return to the man she fell in love with.

    Need—to be loved.

Flaw: She believes her husband is a good man.

    Wound: none.

Secret: She believes she has delusions and she put her baby up for adoption to keep her safe from the delusions.

Internal Dilemma: She loves her husband. / She is afraid of him.

What Makes the Character Perfect for this Role?: She fulfills the concept by fleeing to the shelter because she is mentally and emotionally abused by her husband. She fulfills the story’s need by becoming Selma’s client. She drives the conflict by believing her husband is a good man, thereby opposing Selma’s goal of convincing Elizabeth to leave her husband. She also discovers Selma’s lie which increases the conflict.

    3. Name: Mark

Role in the Story: Antagonist. He is Elizabeth’s abusive husband. He opposes Selma because she wants Elizabeth to leave him and he is bent on having her at home.

Core Traits: dishonest, manipulative, controlling, loves his dog.

    Motivation: Want— to be respected

Need–to have power and control over Elizabeth.

Flaw: his need to have power and control over Elizabeth.

Wound: He witnessed his father abuse his mother.

Secret: He is lying to Elizabeth about her delusions.

Internal Dilemma: He wants power and control over Elizabeth. / He wants to be loved.

What makes this character perfect for his role in this story?: He fulfills the concept by abusing his wife mentally and emotionally. He drives the conflict by gaslighting and manipulating Elizabeth every night, unbeknownst to Selma, while she tries to convince Elizabeth to leave him. The members of the audience need to see and hear him abusing her so they can understand why Selma is trying to save Elizabeth.

I love how Elizabeth is Selma’s first client. Is Elizabeth really the antagonist? or are there two protagonists? Also, it seems weird Elizabeth has no wound.

    Zenna Davis-Jones

What I learned through this exercise is that most of my characters are looking for love and acceptance in different forms. I also really enjoyed exploring their secrets.

    Name: Sister Colette

Role in the Story: Protagonist. She begins as the favorite at the congregation, entirely docile and subservient. She then becomes disillusioned when she discovers the head priest is killing girls in the congregation and must find a way to save them.

Core Traits: Naïve, people pleaser, guilt-ridden, altruistic.

Motivation: Want: to create heaven on earth for people and God to celebrate.

Need: To learn to forgive and trust herself.

Flaw: Afraid of letting others down.

Wound: Blames herself for when her sister went missing.

    Secret: Thinks she’s evil inside.

Hidden Agenda: To be absolved of sins in the eyes of God.

Internal Dilemma: Wants to do good in the eyes of others vs listening and honoring her intuition.

Why she is perfect for this story: Begins as a perfect, docile, submissive recruit and when she discovers her fellow girls are in danger, she must dig into the deep resources of self to find the strength to bring them to safety.

    Name: Father Kinsley

Role In Story: Commune leader and antagonist. Believe he is God and will stop at nothing to become all-powerful.

Core Traits: Charismatic, Manipulative, Narcissist, Cruel

Motivation: Wants to be so powerful he can do whatever he wants.

Need: Keep himself safe by controlling everyone around him.

Flaw: Too power-hungry, insatiable beyond reason.

Wound: Abused as a child, left for dead by parents.

Secret: He wants to be God and have the power to choose who gets to live and who dies.

    Hidden Agenda: Brainwashing his followers

Internal Dilemma: Wants to be God, doesn’t believe there is a god.

Why he is perfect for this story: He offers Colette a “safe space” where she can willingly give over her right to chose, but once she discovers he is evil, he offers the greatest obstacle to her, thinking he knows better and is better.

    Name: Sister Raymond

Role: Closest to a Mother Superior. Antagonists helper. She jumps on every opportunity to shut Colette down. Willingly does Kinsley’s dirty work.

Core Traits: Ambitious, jealous, conniving, intelligent

    Motivation: Want: Kinsley’s unwavering approval

Need: To feel love and accepted.

Flaw: Willing to hurt real friendships to get ahead.

Wound: Abused by stepdad, warped sense of what love is.

Secret: She is in love with Kinsley.

Hidden Agenda: Kill anyone Kinsley asks.

Internal dilemma: Wants to be loved, hates herself.

Why she is perfect for this role: She makes Colette second guess herself. She demonstrates to Colette that no matter how ‘good’ you are to Kinsley it is never enough.

    Name: Margaret

Role: New recruit who gives voice to the audience in the beginning by questioning the community. She then becomes a pivotal character the audience is connected to that needs to be saved.

Core Traits: Skeptical, street-smart, lonely, good-hearted.

Motivation: Want: to find a cheap place to live.

Need: A home where she is loved.

Flaw: Thinks the world is out to get her.

Wound: Hard relationship with family. Has a difficult time trusting people.

    Secret: She misses hugs.

Hidden Agenda: To get away from an abusive boyfriend.

Internal Dilemma: Wants love, wont let anyone in.

Why she is perfect for this story: The audience cares about her, she has the street smarts to get out of dangerous situations but is desperate enough for a home that she is willing to overlook certain signs.

    Ed Etzkorn’s Character Profiles

What I learned: Yes, knowing each character more intimately can lead to major improvements in the script.

    Name: Azuri Burris

Role in Story: Protagonist; must solve problems of who the entity living in her new house is, what the entity wants and how to deal with it without it killing or wounding herself and her parents

Core Traits: Loyal; decisive; empathetic almost to a fault; needs emotional support of friends and parents to function to her max; feels responsible for everything and everyone, blames herself if things go wrong.

Motivation: Needs to make sure she and everyone around her is safe. Wants to solve the problem to everyone’s satisfaction.

Flaw: need to please everyone. Wound: without even realizing it, feels responsible for her brother’s death even though she was only 2 years old at the time.

Secret/hidden agenda: Unable to defend herself when she’s attacked, since she blames herself. Needs to prove herself to herself as well as to everyone else.

Internal Dilemma: Needs to impose her sense of rightness and fairness, yet needs approval of others just as much even if their values do not match her own.

What makes this character perfect for her role in the story? Needs to identify with the entity and satisfy its needs even as she needs to cast it out of everyone’s life.

    NAME: Clytemnestra Randall

Role in Story: Unidentified entity residing in Azuri’s new house; was killed in the fire that burned a portion of the house years ago, cannot accept her own death, wans either to replace Azuri or make her suffer the same fate.

Core traits: Self-pity; no qualms about making other people suffer; needs acceptance and respect from others; yet still some vague sense of empathy.

Motivation: Wants to continue living as Azuri is now living; needs respect, love, and sympathy of other people.

Flaw: selfish. Wound: it was unfair that she had to die so young.

Secret/Hidden Agenda: She’d replace Azuri if she could. But there’s a slight problem—she’s dead.

Internal Dilemma: Doesn’t really want to hurt Azuri or her family, but wants them gone.

What makes this character perfect for her role in the story? She can continually taunt Azuri and make Azuri and her family suffer, then holds back. Gives conflicting signals to the living so that they don’t know how to respond.

    NAME: Felicia Burris

Role in Story: Azuri’s mother; wants what’s best for Azuri, but does not give her enough space. Feels Azuri is special in some way due to the incident when Azuri was 2 years old, but keeps worrying that whatever preternatural trait Azuri possesses, it can manifest as something evil as well as good.

Core traits: Devoted to those she loves; loving but possessive. More protective of her own interests than those of her husband or her daughter. Trusts her husband implicitly, but wary of her daughter and her daughter’s powers.

Motivation: Watches out for members of her family; always on the lookout for some sign of lack of loyalty on their part.

Secret/hidden agenda: ready to reject anything she cannot understand

Internal dilemma: Wants Azuri to stand up for herself, but only on her own terms

Core Traits: Loyalty; talkative-all her thoughts on the surface; resentful of her mom’s strict rules

Motivation: To help Azuri solve the issue of the entity in her home; to use Azuri’s knowledge to solve the issue surrounding her own home.

Secret/hidden agenda: none. Assumes Azuri’s successes as her own

Internal dilemma: None evident. (Needs approval of her friends beyond reasonable?)

What makes this character perfect for her role in the story? Pushes Azuri to do more as well as be the perfect friend; in return for her loyalty.

    Deanne’s Character Profiles
What I learned doing this assignment = There’s much about a character that must be left out because the script pages are needed to focus on what’s needed for the plot.

Character One = CB, (Cyril Beaugestonian)
Role = protagonist, chief investigator, plot-mover
Traits = responsible, perceptive, inquisitive, risk-averse
Want = a change in his routine
Need = to find a job that gives him a greater sense of purpose
Flaw = he’s attracted to chaos because he feels compelled to manage it, which is great for his career but disaster for relationships
Wound = an early attempt to manage a situation without adequate information resulted in a disaster
Secret = he’s attracted to Zora
Hidden Agenda = He wants to find out what’s going on with this band
Internal Dilemma = He’s risk-averse but must take risks to investigate the band
Why is he the best character for this role? Because CB has the experience, skills, and resources that enable him to handle the challenges, and his fish-out-of-water perspective gives him the ability to zero in on anomalies.

Character Two = Slick (Sloane Lichtmord)
Role = on-screen antagonist, the human interface with the aliens
    Traits = a sell-out, narcissist, power-hungry, charming
    Want = wealth, fame, power
    Need = a good spanking
Flaw = unobservant and out-of-touch with humanity
Wound = got passed over for a major promotion, which fueled a desire to take his revenge on humanity so he jumped at the chance to collaborate with aliens
Secret = the aliens terrify him
Hidden Agenda = he’s after a piece of world domination (the northern hemisphere would suffice)
Internal Dilemma = he wants to be worshipped by the people he doesn’t love
External Dilemma = he wants his names on the band’s songs to get fan adulation, but when he’s onstage the band isn’t playing, so no applause

Character Three = Champ (Vernon Mackie)
Role= protagonist’s best friend and ally, road-trip companion, the guy CB talks to so he doesn’t need to talk to himself. The guy who asks questions so CB can provide answers.
Traits = dedicated family man, loyal, risk-taker, hot-headed
Want = to get out of this mess
Need = to be reunited with family
Flaw = at times he reacts without thinking things through
Wound = has PTSD triggered by earth tremors
Secret = the event that caused the PTSD
Hidden Agenda = wants to help CB find a lasting relationship
Internal Dilemma = taking risks is acting counter to his family’s best interests

Character Four = Zora (Janice Smith)
Role = represents the band members, a potential love-interest for CB
Traits = Momma Bear, clever, restless, falls into relationships too easily
Want = to help her son escape the band
Need = someone who can help her
    Flaw = feels powerless
Wound = was trapped in an abusive relationship
Secret = her collar does not lock
Hidden Agenda = to dissolve the band
Internal Dilemma = she can either stick with the band to help her son escape, or she can leave and save herself

    A. What parts of the profiles can be improved?
I added in improvements as I created these updated profiles.

    B. How can characters fulfill their roles more effectively?
Script space could be used to expand on the possible relationship between CB and Zora.
Slick needs more screen time to demonstrate his traits.
CB and Slick should have more confrontation scenes before the third act.

    Jonathan Clark’s Character Profiles

“What I learned doing this assignment is…?”

Filling out the Character Profiles makes each character come alive. Examining these Profiles then leads to the necessary Character Arcs for each Character. Adding the resultant tapestry of necessary Character Arc scenes to the patchwork of necessary plot scenes will then really deepen and inform the overall plot/outline. Having the Characters more fully developed enhances the overall, of course, but seriously pumps up the subplots necessary to deepen the whole story (and thus the entertainment and saleability factors). It’s like adding pieces to the big puzzle, but now you can see what those puzzle pieces have to be in order to fit them all together. Holes in the external plot can now be filled in with confidence. This is like the mortar between the bricks of my Story. It’s awesome to now have a concrete process to do this for any and all stories.

    Character Profile #1:

    A. Name: Vincenzo Peruggia

    B. Role in the Story: Vincenzo is the protagonist who steals the Mona Lisa, is forced to sell forgeries of the painting by a gang, and falls in love with the gang leader’s fiancee.

    C. Core Traits: aimless, intense, impulsive, resourceful.

    D. Motivation: Want = to get his family back (represented by the Mona Lisa). Need = to overcome his past and learn to value himself and life in general (represented by Italia).

    E. Flaw/Wound: Flaw = Major lack of direction in life, aimless. Wound = His family’s death, causing him to lose his belief in love and the magic of life.

    F. Secret/Hidden Agenda: Secret = he’s the one who stole the Mona Lisa from the Louvre and now he’s selling forgeries. Hidden Agenda = he has secretly fallen head over heels in love with the gang leader’s fiancee, Italia, and it’s giving him a whole new lease on life that’s in complete contrast to the crimes he’s being forced to commit.

    G. Internal Dilemma: He wants to save the Mona Lisa, and yet that’s what’s keeping him under the gang’s thumb. Also, he’s in love with Italia, but pursuing her will likely lead to his and/or her death.

    H. What makes this character perfect for their role in the story? His impulsivity can lead him anywhere. And besides, he actually was the person who stole the Mona Lisa.

I think I need to incorporate Vincenzo’s loss of Faith as part of his Character Arc, so that there’s a stronger emotional release when he gets his Faith back at the end.

    Character Profile #2:

    A. Name: Italia Chaudron

    B. Role in the Story: Italia is Vincenzo’s love interest, who helps him find himself again, but she’s also the unwilling bride-to-be of Vincenzo’s nemesis, Count Edwardo De Valfierno, so he’ll have to fight for her and her for him.

    C. Core Traits: Free spirited, passionate, rebellious, stuck.

    D. Motivation: Want = to be free. Need = to get away from her controlling family and fiance.

    E. Flaw/Wound: Flaw = Feels helpless/stuck. Wound = Her mother’s death, the only one who truly understood her.

    F. Secret/Hidden Agenda: Secret = She’s sick, most likely TB like her mother. Hidden Agenda = She’s fallen in love with Vincenzo, wants to experience love to its fullest before she dies.

    G. Internal Dilemma: She’s sick, and doesn’t really have the energy her rebellious nature needs her to have in order to break free, and also, she loves Vincenzo but doesn’t want him to be killed by her fiance.

    H. What makes this character perfect for their role in this story? Like the Mona Lisa come to life, she really is the catalyst that gives Vincenzo his direction in life, representing love, family, beauty, and the magic that is life itself.

As with Vincenzo, I think I need to bring her Faith into focus more, to reveal that particular Arc. Perhaps she has her mother’s bible, and insists Vincenzo swear his love to her on that bible? (Thus forcing Vincenzo to confront his own Faith?) Something…

    Character Profile #3:

    A. Name: Count Edwardo De Valfierno

    B. Role in the Story: As leader of the gang that has Vincenzo in its grip and as fiance to the woman Vincenzo loves, De Valfierno is our powerful antagonist.

    C. Core Traits: grandiose, narcissistic, controlling, sociopathic.

    D. Motivation: Want = to be an actual Count. Need = to marry Italia, an actual blue-blood, to legitimize himself and his offspring.

    E. Flaw/Wound: Flaw = unable to feel love or understand true art. Wound = told by his mother that he’s the illegitimate son of an actual Count, but he was shunned, which is why he was raised with absolutely nothing.

    F. Secret/Hidden Agenda: Secret = he’s not an actual Count, he’s just a sociopathic criminal. Hidden Agenda = He wants to legitimize himself and his offspring by marrying an actual blue-blood, and he’ll kill anyone who gets in his way.

    G. Internal Dilemma: he tries to act like an aristocrat, but he’s just a street-smart, uneducated criminal, so he doesn’t really know how. And the truth is: he hates aristocrats.

    H. What makes this character perfect for their role in this story? Not only is he the head of the gang that has Vincenzo in its grip, but he’s also the sociopathic fiance to Vincenzo’s true love, a double threat.

    Character Profile #4:

    A. Name: Yves Chaudron

    B. Role in the Story: Chaudron is not just Italia’s father, he is the unreliable narrator, telling us the story of Vincenzo as he would like his interviewers (and us) to hear it.

    C. Core Traits: art obsessed, failed family-man, gambler, aristocratic.

    D. Motivation: Want = to return his family to its place of honor, by building up its collection of true artworks. Need = to get away with stealing the Mona Lisa.

    E. Flaw/Wound: Flaw = his addiction to gambling. Wound = after his wife’s death, he lost all his family’s artworks and become beholden to De Valfierno due to his gambling addiction.

    F. Secret/Hidden Agenda: Secret = pretty much everything he’s telling his interviewers is a lie, especially that he painted the forgeries. Truth is, he wasn’t good enough. It was Italia who painted them. Hidden Agenda = he’s trying to get away with stealing the real Mona Lisa.

    G. Internal Dilemma: He needs to lie to get away with his theft, but tell enough of the truth to be believable, so it’s a real tightrope walk.

    H. What makes this character perfect for their role in this story? Chaudron is the one actually telling the story, so without him there is no story. Also, he’s tied into all the characters in one way or another and so he can make up any story he wants to convince the interviewers there’s ‘no here, here’ so he can avoid prosecution and get away clean with the Mona Lisa.
