What I learned doing this assignment is that we need more than one big mystery to keep the viewer engage and that those mysteries need more than one layer.
ASSIGNMENT 1:
The show I chose is SUPERNATURAL S1E8
The big picture mysteries are:
– Who killed Sam and Dean’s mother and why
– Why did their father disappear? Where is he?
The episode mysteries were:
– Why are the insects starting to kill humans?
– Why are they targeting the family and the people working closely with the real estate developers?
ASSIGNMENT 2:
Create two mysteries for your show — one that shows up strong in the Pilot and the other that is revealed over time.
1. Create your Shocking Event Mystery and tell us the WWWWW and H, along with the part withheld.
- A. Shocking Event: A serial killer tries to murder Finch, a homeless man but is killed first by police forces. When he dies, his soul “jumps” into the homeless man.
- B. Secret: Who is this serial killer and why does he eliminate homeless man? What kind of power does the serial killer hold on Finch’s body now that his soul is inside him?
- C. Investigation: The investigation is conducted by a squad specialized in supernatural event, especially the ones that involve “jumpers”, the people with the power to transfer their soul when they die.
- WWWWW and How: Who: The street cleaner; What: Killing homeless men; When: In the middle of the night, Where: In alleys where nobody goes; How: He injects a drug that kills them, making it look like an overdose
- Part Withheld: Why is the serial killer targeting homeless men?

What I learned: Two kinds of mysteries – never thought of mysteries in quite these ways
ASSIGNMENT 1 – SHOW – HOUSE OF CARDS STARRING KEVIN SPACEY
A1) Frank Underwood pushes Zoe Barnes in front of a moving train, killing her instantly. Culmination of his manipulation of her as a journalist and lover, and fear of being exposed by her investigation into his crimes.
Secret – Zoe had evidence of his involvement in Peter Russo’s death and his scheme to become Vice-President. He used his contacts in the security and media to cover up his tracks and frame a homeless man for the murder.
OVER TIME MYSTERY
Frank Underwood has a secret past as a member of a radical group that plotted to assassinate the President. He covered it up by changing his identity and joining the Democratic Party. Over time clues such as odd photos, letters and witnesses emerge, that challenge his public persona and expose his hidden agenda.

our protagonist who is south american born, is a canadian engineer with a us firm building a highway in guyana. He realizes along the way that the hidden motivation is to get better access for oil and mineral exploration.

He also has to deal with the ethical and moral dilemmas of his job and his loyalty to his employer, his country and his heritage. •

She also has a romantic interest in Diego, but their relationship is complicated by their different perspectives and agendas. •

He also has a personal vendetta against Diego, who he blames for the death of his brother in a mining accident. •

Her role is to guide Diego and Lila to the hidden ancient city in the jungle, and to reveal its secrets and dangers. She also has a hidden connection to Ricardo, who she used to work for as a treasure hunter. •

His role is to oversee the highway project and to report to the US firm. He also acts as a mentor and a friend to Diego, but he is unaware of the ulterior motives of his employer and the consequences of his actions.
SHOCKING EVENT MYSTERY

- I-a) A shocking event mystery that is
immediate and in your face is the disappearance of Sam. He
goes missing after inspecting a section of the highway that is near a
mining site. His car is found abandoned and riddled with bullets. The
local police suspect that he was kidnapped by rebels or bandits, but there
is no ransom demand or any other clue. Diego and Lila decide to
investigate his disappearance, as they suspect that there is more to it
than meets the eye.- I-b) The secret behind Sam’s
disappearance is that he was murdered by Ricardo’s men.
Ricardo wanted to get rid of Sam because he had discovered that Ricardo
was illegally mining gold and diamonds in the area, and was planning to
expose him to the US firm and the authorities. Ricardo also wanted to send
a message to Diego and Lila, who he knew were getting close to the truth.
He staged Sam’s kidnapping to make it look like a random act of violence,
and hid his body in the jungle.- I-c) The investigation carried by Diego
and Lila involves following the clues left by Sam. Sam had
left a note in his car with a map and a code, which leads Diego and Lila
to a hidden cave where he had stored some evidence of Ricardo’s illegal
activities. They also find a video message from Sam, in which he reveals
what he knows and asks them to continue his work. Diego and Lila then have
to evade Ricardo’s henchmen, who are on their trail, and find a way to
expose him to the world.OVER TIME MYSTERY

- An over time mystery with a cover up
presented as reality is the existence of the lost city of Z.
The local government and the US firm claim that the highway project is
purely for development and infrastructure purposes, and that there is no
archaeological or historical significance in the area. They also deny any
rumors or reports of ancient ruins or artifacts being found or destroyed
during the construction. However, Mara knows that this is a lie, and that
the highway project is actually a cover up for a secret expedition to find
the legendary city of Z, which is believed to be hidden somewhere in the
Guiana Shield.- II-b) The secret behind the cover up is
that the US firm is working for a mysterious organization that
is obsessed with finding the city of Z and its secrets. This organization
has been searching for the city for decades, and has amassed a vast amount
of resources and influence. They have infiltrated the local government and
the US firm, and have bribed or threatened anyone who might oppose or
expose them. They believe that the city of Z holds the key to a powerful
ancient technology or knowledge that could change the world.- II-c) The small bits of clues that
challenge the reality are revealed by Mara. Mara is a former
employee of the organization, who left them after discovering their true
intentions and methods. She has been trying to find the city of Z on her
own, and to stop the organization from reaching it. She contacts Diego and
Lila, and offers to help them uncover the truth. She shows them some of
the artifacts and documents that she has collected, which prove that the
city of Z exists and that the organization is behind the highway project.
She also leads them to some of the hidden entrances and tunnels that lead
to the city, and warns them of the dangers that await them.1of30

What I learned doing this assignment is that it helped me add many new layers to my story I hadn’t thought about.
Note that I decided to work on a different screenplay for this class from now on.
