CM 2: Syd Puts Essence to Work
What I learned is how to relentlessly dive deeper into each scene to empower the character in word and action.
Script I choose: Golden City
Scene 1 Location: Opening scene (Scene 1)
Logline: Vanhi ignites a family fight when she decides to leave her home against all society’s expectations of a widow with her brother-in-law Palesh.
Essence I’ve discovered: Vanhi makes a radical, unexpected decision at the most painful moment of her life.
New Logline: Vanhi makes a radical decision about her future as she stares at her husband’s body on a funeral pyre.
Scene 2 Location: Beginning — The Fight (Scene 2)
Logline: Vanhi ignites a family fight with her brother-in-law Palesh when she decides to leave and not behave like a widow is expected.
Essence I’ve discovered: Vanhi risks her life by pretending not to be a widow.
New Logline: Why would she risks her life to go back to Lucknow?
Vanhi’s brother-in-law fights her decision to leave — she will not surrender her jewelry (wealth) or wear white. Her decision disrespects her husband and she takes family wealth (Chardy’s dowry).
Scene 3 Location: Charita will not be left behind (Scene 4)
Logline: Charita secretly steals away to follow her mother.
Essence I’ve discovered: Charita is too smart and educated for the life others chose for her.
New Logline: Sona knows Charita doesn’t fit in the small life laid out for her — so she helps her and does what she can to empower her.
Scene 4 Location: A cosmopolitan city (Scene 5)
Logline: Charita and Vanhi are reunited close to the city.
Essence I’ve discovered: Vanhi is afraid for her daughter’s future. She can’t take care of both of them — so she’ll has to come up with a strategy.
New Logline: Vanhi saves her daughter from a Portuguese trader and devises a new plan to secure her daughter’s future.
Scene 5 Location: The Transformation (Scene 6)
Logline: Vanhi knows that her daughter’s best hope is to marry well, i.e., a wealthy man, so she going to make that happen.
Essence I’ve discovered: This is the moment Vanhi decides to enter the Royal Court. Initially, she was just going to hitch a ride back to Lucknow. Her new plan requires selling some jewelry and transforming herself to become the marriage broker.
New Logline: Vanhi re-creates herself in order to infiltrate the kingdom’s upper class to save her daughter’s future.
