David Kandel — Profiles People
What I learned: Focusing on 4 core traits is actually a very efficient way to craft interesting characters. I believe this method is more functional than drafting paragraphs of character backstory and history.
Person 1
Clever
Humorous
Cynical
Stubborn
Observations during testing: P1 makes me laugh. He’s spontaneous and funny, but when the subject of politics comes up, he’s one-sided, cynical and won’t see the other side. It’s black and white with him. It’s better not to engage in discussions about politics with him.
Person 2
Happy
Giving
Naïve/trusting
Gullible
Observations during testing: P2 is a gentle, giving sensitive person. She laughs at my jokes, which makes her one of my favorite friends! I can make her believe almost anything because she is so gullible. I worry about her because with her giving spirit and gullible nature, she is susceptible to being taken advantage of.
Person 3
Polished communicator
Intense
Hollow
Hypocritical
Observation during testing: P3 is a professional communicator. He comes across initially as personable and caring but in actuality, it’s an act. He’s hollow inside and emotionally cold. He had a rotten childhood in a dysfunctional family which in my mind explains why I see him ultimately as a fake and a hypocrite.
