Law Abiding Citizen – Thriller Conventions
What I learned from watching this movie? Thinking about the model b brought a whole new level in appreciation of the writing of this script and how I might apply this model to my thrillers.
Unwilling but resourceful hero. Clyde Sheldon.
After watching his wife and daughter be raped and murdered, a family man exacts revenge on the system that allowed one of the killers to go free in a plea bargain.
Dangerous villain – A cold blooded killer.
BUT THEN
The model gets turned on its head, and we realize the hero is actually the rising prosector, Nick Rice, who accepted the pea bargain, and the victim becomes the villain.
Prosecutor Nick Allen is now the hero – but he has massive flaws – personal success overrides his willingness to fight for justice. – Until the end, when he no longer makes deals with killers.
Life and Death situations. Members of the legal profession are systematically killed off – in the final scene members of homeland security, the police, the FBI, the Mayor, are about to be blown up.
This movie is thrilling because: we don’t know how the villain is coming up with all these kills – he’s in prison. He’s always one step ahead of the authorities. Who’s next? Pretty much stays that way throughout the movie. Always on edge – also the battle is personal between the high-powered lawyer and the killer – who is smarter?
Big Mystery: Who is Clyde Sheldon
Big Intrigue: Will he win his battle of wits with Nick Rice
Big Suspense: Will Clyde sucked in bringing down the broken system.
This script is filled with dark humor, the stakes are enormous and at first we totally understand Cldes motives – but then it gets totally out of hand. Even after the carnage we are happy Clydes actions made him realize not to make deals with killers.

Unwitting but Resourceful Hero: Ray Monroe
Dangerous Villain: Hospital doctors and staff.
High stakes: Finding his wife and daughter after being admitted to the hospital.
Life and death situations: Hospital staff doesn’t know who’s he talking about.
This movie is thrilling because- You believe him, he’s fighting for his family, and you feel that they are in danger.
Big Mystery: where are his daughter and wife after being admitted to the hospital.
Big Intrigue: why’s everyone lying about seeing them.
Big Suspense: can he save his family.
The ending had a surprise reveal that tied everything up.
