Action Lesson 1: Creating Your Action Concept
ASSIGNMENT
BG’s Conventions!
What I learned doing this assignment: This assignment helped me organize my ideas according to the conventions of the ACTION genre.
2. Brainstorm your concept and tell us the concept and conventions.
Concept: Sent to get a scoop about a conspiracy, an engineer-turned-reporter decides to fight the conspirators instead.
Conventions:
Hero: An engineer-turned-reporter with a broken heart.
Mission: To investigate a conspiracy to start a war… and stop it before assassins and agents kill him.
Demand for Action: If he doesn’t stop the conspiracy, war will break out and people will die.
Antagonist: Vicious billionaire who uses his media empire to convince the public that war is necessary to protect their way of life.
Escalating Action: Sneaking around to investigate turns into fighting off assassins and agents, a high-risk rescue operation, and a high-risk hacking operation.

What I learned doing this assignment is that it might be more fun to write action movies than to watch them. Also, thinking about the ending is a good way to start with filling in ideas, and then the ideas just keep coming.
Concept: Alanah Quartermaine, an African American woman and the descendant of the Alan Quartermaine continues her family’s legacy of big game hunting, only this time she’s hunting something Alien in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota.
Conventions
Highly Skilled Hero: Alanah Quartermaine with a family legacy of adventure and an unparralled affinity for tracking in her blood.<div>
Demand For Action: A mysterious government agency wanter her to apply her big game tracking skills, to hunt down an alien that has crash landed in the Minnesota Boundary Waters.
Mission: Kill the thing before it spreads to more populated areas and starts killing more than the occasional hiker.
Antagonist: The Agency scientist that actually woke it up and set it loose in the boundary waters to see how to weaponize it and make money. He doesn’t want it killed he wants it captured so he can dissect and splice it.
Escalating Action: It replicates and grows quickly, the things that have been killing the hikers, have just been babies.

Action Lesson 1: Creating Your Action Concept
Subject Line: Dennis Chrisman Concepts and Conventions
What I’ve learned from this assignment: Compelling, inventive, and thoughtful Concepts and Convention is paramount with Inventive Decisions underpinned by: Creativity, Smart Decisions out of the box thinking to discover better decisions.
High Concept: A result of US Force Majeure chaos and lawlessness spread across the nation; a mother with creative fighting skills must move to her dad’s farm while protecting her daughter and others that need help (her pack)
· Hero: Highly memorable and intriguing female character with creative fighting skills; a cunning escape artist who protects her pack and meets the mission… but not without a fight.
· Demand for Action: The protagonist encounters and defends her pack, and meets her mission fighting looters, untrained militia, and ruthless anarchists.
· Mission: To make it through the gauntlet of the antagonist, who wishes to stop her from her from reaching dad’s farm while protecting her pack.
· Antagonist: The main antagonist is a group of ruthless, mobile, and rogue anarchists who want the protagonists for pleasure and black-market sale.
· Escalating Action: The Protagonist encounters:
— A looter inside her home attempts to rape her, but the daughter shoots and kills him.
— Untrained militias guarding a bridge; having fun with another woman. The protagonist kills and wounds several from a distance with a special adaptor to her Glock nine-millimeter. They cross the bridge and end up in the river floating to safety.
— A gang of mobile, rogue anarchists wants her and the kids for pleasure and black-market sale. She escapes, evades, and fights the gang while traveling to meet the mission with a large-scale fight at the end.

Concept: An incendiary Counter-terrorism Agent’s memories are manipulated as she engages in a violent pursuit of her father, a brutal terrorist known as the Coyote.
Conventions:
Highly Skilled Hero: A counter-terrorism Agent who specializes in Capoeira fighting, is caught between her Mexican upbringing and working for the U.S. Government.
Demand for Action: She must fight her estranged father, a terrorist, to expose a corrupt Politician before he becomes President.
Mission: If she doesn’t stop her father, he will blow up the International Bridge, killing countless civilians and launching the corrupt Politician into the White House.
Antagonist: A guilt-stricken U.S. Politician desperately tries to end the atrocities at the border by manipulating the memories of undocumented immigrants. If it is successful he has his eyes on doing it to America by becoming President.
Escalating Action: The Agent has false memories that causes her to wake up in places with no idea of how she got there or who the enemy is. She leverages her small size to maximum effect using Capoeira, an MMA grappling style of fighting focusing on joint weakness and leg locks, as she attempts to solve a mystery while she can’t trust her own mind.

What I learned doing this assignment: This assignment helped me realize that my antagonist is a much stronger character than my hero in my comedy, switching to action movie idea.
2. Brainstorm your concept and tell us the concept and conventions.
Concept:An advocate in a safehouse attempts to rescue women in crisis.
Conventions:
Hero: An educated safehouse director who came from a violent background.
Mission: To ensure women clients and their children find safety physically, emotionally, financially and legally before their 30 day residence ends and abusive partners harm them.

What I learned from this assignment is not to belabor things. The answers I seek are already there, I just have to write them down and stay open and disciplined somewhat and go with it.
Concept: Frank, possessed of paranormal gifts and abilities to see angelic/alien beings, in direct communication with another world, sets out to bring peace to religious conflicts in the middle east with what looks like non-violence on one plane, but is sci-fi action on another plane.
Hero is a dropout CEO from the fashion industry who perceives other-worldly communications.
Mission is to convince leaders of middle east countries and factions to stop all violence.
Demand for action: If he does not, his soul becomes property of Luc (Lucifer) who is currently running the material world and middle east conflict will escalate to nuclear.
Antagonist: The material world and its agents, run by Luc.
Escalating Action: from connecting with fashion industry execs to gain access to politicians to peace talks to intentional sabotage by Luc and his friends.
