Megan’s Intriguing Concept and World
What I learned doing this assignment is…that the hook is presented in the concept as basically one extended sentence and should be the most unique or unusual part of my idea. I also learned that any world can become more intriguing through brainstorming. By brainstorming the intriguing world, I uncovered an interesting new plot twist I wouldn’t have discovered previously.
The challenge will be to still channel the right genre (action comedy) through the layers of intrigue to avoid losing my comedic voice.
Concept:
A. Lexie, a smart but overlooked middle child . . .
B. …is on the verge of running away from home when she discovers she can communicate with her future self . . .
C. …whom she begins seeking advice from to become more adventurous. . .
D. …transforming even earlier than expected into the badass undercover agent that is coaching her.
Intriguing World:
Unique Sub-World: Undercover operatives in 2040
Previously unexplored: Personal lives of undercover agents; the US government as an oligarchy
The unknown: Intricacies of personal relationships for agents, what the year 2040 will be like
The unseen: What would the US be like with a complete change in government? Private subgroups experimenting with parallel timelines to change history
Unheard of Dangers: the technology for these revolutions is already in place through the media, Google, the Internet, and social media
Reason to explore it: questions about security in technology; questions about corruption in the government and the voting process; questions about the future

Tom’s Intriguing Concept and World
What I learned from this exercise is how to start fine tuning the broad strokes previously discovered into a more fine-tuned vision of the world of the story.
Concept
Nine people from different walks of life believe they joined a support group to cope with losses suffered during the pandemic
When they discover they have been abducted and taking place in an alien experiment
Where they discover their true relationship to one another
In an attempt to stop a fatal uprising that will happen in the near future.
World
Unique Sub-World: An alien vessel that creates the illusion of a church basement
Previously Unexplored: Learning how to co-exist from an advanced alien species
The Unknown: Why are the aliens trying to help? How the people will react when they find out they’ve been abducted?
The Unseen: The true nature of the experiment? How these people are connected in space and time.
Unheard of Dangers The group members have clashing beliefs and values
Reason to Explore it: Is fate pre-determined or is the future unwritten?

What we learned from this exercise is that we really need to focus on what makes this intriguing and unique. Also, the direction we went in wasn’t what we originally had in mind.

Unique Sub-World: The swinger lifestyle…
Previously unexplored: through a happily married couple who have been swingers for over 14 years
The unknown: as they go public
The unseen: what really goes on in the swinger lifestyle and all of its sub-worlds (i.e. BDSM, poly, etc.)
Unheard of Dangers: judgment, regrets of not living authentically, staying in a miserable relationship, getting into a non-monogamous relationship for the wrong reasons
Reason to explore it: to question and shake up societal norms. In our experience, a committed, non-monogamous relationship if done right is the most natural and fulfilling for humans.
