    Kimberly’s Trust Relationships

What I learned: Adding specific complexity to relationships allows for more thrilling opportunities.

    1. Main characters.

    Hero: Lacia<div>

    Villain: Rian

    Red Herring Character: Emma

    Trusted, but shouldn’t be: Rian

Isn’t trusted, but should be: Emma

    2. Characters as trustable / not trustable.

    Lacia (oldest child)

    · basic state is trustable

    · might appear not trustable – PTSD-caused outbursts

    · circumstances causing a switch to not trustable – close physical contact, event that she can’t control, loud noises

    · circumstances causing a switch from not trustable to trustable – when someone’s life is in danger

    Rian (only child)

    · basic state is not trustable

    · might appear trustable – master manipulator and psychopath

    · circumstances causing a switch to not trustable – when his safety/freedom is threatened, when he is confident he can get away with it

    Emma (middle child)

    · basic state is trustable

    · might appear not trustable – allied with Rian to steal the boat and imprison Lacia

    · circumstances causing a switch to not trustable – is easily manipulated by Rian, when jealous, when she is vying for attention

    3. Character relationships.

Hero / Villain: Lacia doesn’t trust Rian from the beginning but lets her guard down as he sees to need her help; Rian sees Lacia as formidable foe but with exploitable weaknessesHero / Red Herring Character: Lacia sees Emma as petulant child and potentially dangerous; Emma sees Lacia as mother figure with all the conflicted emotions of love/hate/admire/envy

    Kathy’s Trust Relationships

What I learned doing this assignment is that I have trust issues built in.”

Create trust / distrust relationships between your characters and add them to your Thriller Map.

    1. Make a list of the main characters.

    Hero: Simone

    Villain: Ben

    Red Herring Character: Marcie

    Trusted, but shouldn’t be: Ben

Isn’t trusted, but should be: Simone since Ben doesn’t trust Simone.

    2. With each character, ask these questions:

    Simone:

    A. What is their basic state — trustable or not trustable? trustable

    B. How might they really be trustable, but appear not trustable OR be not trustable, but appear trustable? Not applicable for this character.

    C. What circumstances might cause them to switch from one to the other? Will never be not trustable.

    Ben:

    A. What is their basic state — trustable or not trustable? Not trustable

    B. How might they really be trustable, but appear not trustable OR be not trustable, but appear trustable? Appears trustable to Simone so she marries him.

    C. What circumstances might cause them to switch from one to the other? Will never be trustable.

    Marcie:

    A. What is their basic state — trustable or not trustable? Not trustable

    B. How might they really be trustable, but appear not trustable OR be not trustable, but appear trustable? Appears trustable to Ben but really isn’t, is selfish, wants Ben and the money for herself.

    C. What circumstances might cause them to switch from one to the other? When she’s in danger, she turns on Ben.

    Beth:

    A. What is their basic state — trustable or not trustable? trustable

    B. How might they really be trustable, but appear not trustable OR be not trustable, but appear trustable? Not applicable for this character.

    C. What circumstances might cause them to switch from one to the other? Not applicable for this character.

    3. With each character relationship, brainstorm how trust or distrust might show up between them.

    Hero / Villain: Simone/Ben

Ben is a handsome charming con man. He partners with Marcie to find women who are recently divorced and have expensive houses. He finds Simone and marries her. She trusts him until the end.

    Simone marries Ben.

Simone signs a pre-nup which contains a hidden sentence.

She believes his lie about the note.

She believes his lie about playing tennis.

    Red Herring Character: Simone/Marcie

Simone doesn’t know about Marcie, Ben’s secret partner/lover. Only meets her in the 3rd act.

    Ben fights with Simone.

Ben aims his gun at her.

Ben socks Simone on the boat.

Ben shoots at Simone on the boat

    Trust Relationships:

Hero / Villain: Tang – Phil

TRUST: Tang trust Phil as they were best friends growing up and now have that same connection or so Tang thinks. DISTRUST: He says there’s nothing he is gonna learn about the death of the Mayor.

TRUST: Phil is interested in everything Tang has to say about the discovery of the black threads at the Mayor’s and mom’s murder.

DISTRUST: Phil declares that they haven’t said that the Mayor was murdered, and wants to know who actually did kill his Mom. (He wanted to but was scared away before he – and his 2 Hooded Buddies – could)

TRUST: Phil says he found out some info about his Mom’s death and meet him somewhere.

DISTRUST: Tang thinks it’s an odd place to meet and why demand the Girlfriend has to be there but no one else.

DISTRUST: Soon enough the Sheriff can’t be trusted as he last second gives Phil a chance to escape.

Trust… Reveal… I’m guessing Foreshadow is coming soon.

We all notice these elements in what we’ve written. We all understand we need to include all these things. I guess the lessons are telling us that it is important to identify each of these things (even though we know they are there). Hmm…

I’m wondering how important it is to identify scene-by-scene MIS? My thinking is to lump it all into one category called Questions, because that (and forward motion) is really all that matters in the scene, isn’t it? Save the micro-MIS for character development. Any thoughts/feedback?

    Emmanuel Sullivan’s Trust Relationships

What I learned is relationships between the hero and villain are key to advancing the story, even if they both attempt at trusting and then distrusting each other. I think secondary character’s trust and distrust follow. This is a good exercise to plan out or add to story plots.

    Melanie’s Trust Relationships

What I learned: By incorporating trust/distrust relationships, I’m actually getting to know the hero better. I’ve got a long way to go but it helps throwing situations at her where she questions whether or not to trust the villain/red herring character and how she reacts to each. Cool.

    Characters:

    Hero: Vivienne Worth

    Villain: Hugo Gage

Red Herring Character: Danny Worth, Vivienne’s ex-husband

Trusted, but shouldn’t be: Hugo Gage

Isn’t trusted, but should be: Lily Kramer, her best friend

    Character States:

    Hero: Vivienne Worth

Trustable. She’s a 911 Operator, handles people’s emergencies, and is a trusted go-to source for help.

Underneath it all, she’s wavering. She’s been strong for years in this line of work but having heard a woman die on the other end of the line, she questions her own credibility. Can she really be trusted with other people’s lives?

Depending on her success on the job, and taking her recent med prescription, she can flip back and forth from trusting herself vs. not trusting herself.

    Villain: Hugo Gage

Trustable. His profession as a psychiatrist has a built in trust factor. His demeanor also contributes to his trust-ability since he is soft-spoken, thoughtful, and takes care of his plants with impeccable precision.

On the outside, he appears like the perfect quintessential therapist – a trusted caretaker of Vivienne’s deepest secrets. However, inside he is at war believing his client’s negligence helped take the life of his wife.

He wants to get into Vivienne’s head, so he will appear trustable to her in order to get what he wants.

    Red Herring: Danny Worth (ex-husband)

Not Trustable. He’s Vivienne’s ex-husband for a reason, after hiding an extra marital affair. She would rather not have anything to do with him but is forced to face him as they coordinate visitation of their daughter.

He wants to be trusted, even though he’s messed up in the past, and appears to be for his daughter’s sake. However, he’s selfishly motivated and will do what he thinks is right in the circumstances.

Isn’t Trusted but should be: Lily Kramer (best friend)

Not Trustable. She reveals to Vivienne that she had a brief affair with her ex-husband. It’s devastating to Vivienne and changes her perspective on their friendship.

In conversation with Vivienne, she takes on the nurturing/supportive friend. She’s a widower, though, and will try to climb the ladder at the country club even if it means betraying a friend’s trust. She ends up being a victim of the killer.

    Trust/Distrust Sequences:

    Vivienne/Hugo

Trust: Vivienne assumes Hugo has her best interest at heart as her psychiatrist. She finally decides to talk to someone about her PTSD working at the call center and more specifically failing with the woman who died while on the phone with her.

Distrust: Hugo asks a question that seems inappropriate in the session – asking her exactly what happened on that particular 911 call and why she was negligent.

Trust: He prescribes medication to treat her anxiety.

Distrust: The medication does the opposite and makes her anxious. So she stops taking it.

Trust: He adjusts meds and tells her to call anytime, he’s avail.

Distrust: He shows up at her house the next day to return her umbrella (?). He didn’t call plus how did he know where she lives?

Trust: She researches him on the internet and finds favorable reviews.

Distrust: She goes to help her daughter after her 911 call. When she gets to the house she calls his office phone for help and he picks up. She hears his voice at the house – he’s the killer.

    Hero/Red Herring

    Vivienne/Danny

Distrust: He had an affair during their marriage and lied about it. This resulted in their divorce.

    Distrust: Bruising on Natalie’s arm.

Trust: When she drops him off, she sees him wearing an expensive suit, schlepping dry cleaning. He’s got his act together. He’s friendly and seems like he wants to reconnect.

Distrust: he forgets to pick up Natalie at school, so she has to get her instead.

Distrust: He is at a cafe with another blonde woman. He lied about not being able to get Natalie

Distrust: Lily reveals their affair – his name is mud again.

Trust: He picks up when she calls him for help in the final scene. He rescues her.

    Vivienne/Lily

Trust: She seems to want to help, takes her to coffee.

Distrust: Reveals her affair with Danny.

Trust: She invites Natalie over to her daughter’s sleepover and treats her to a night out. Natalie enjoys hanging out with the popular crowd.

Distrust: She avoids her at the country club, hangs out with people they never considered friends.

Trust: She becomes a target for the killer. She calls 911 (gets Vivienne) and pleads for help.

Distrust: Vivienne goes to hospital to visit Lily. Finds she is asleep, looks on her cell phone and sees her ex-husband’s number under recent calls.

    Subject line: Larry’s Trust Relationships

What I learned doing this assignment is that relationships between the characters provide more mystery, suspense, twists and intrigue. This also helps to start defining the characters more concisely. This was a very good exercise. Ideally, by the time we get to the climax the audience will be wondering exactly who is or is not in the Ring for it will appear almost everyone is. Identities will be revealed in the very final scene – or maybe not.

    1. Make a list of the main characters.

    · Hero: Detective

    · Villain: The Pedophile Ring (School superintendent, Court Judge, Police Chief, School Principal)

    · Red Herring Characters: Gym teacher (suspect in murder) + Police Station Captain (direct boss of Hero)

    · Trusted, but shouldn’t be: Villain

    · Isn’t trusted, but should be: Red Herring characters

    2. With each character, ask these questions:

    Character: Hero

    · A. Basic state — trustable

    · B. How might they really be trustable, but appear not trustable OR be not trustable, but appear trustable? At one point the Hero will appear no trustable

    · C. What circumstances might cause them to switch from one to the other?

    · At beginning of act 3 (turning point #2 – lowest point) Hero’s wife leaves him; he will drink and heavily and question the value and purpose and prospects of his investigation: he will not trustable in continuing his investigation for a time

    Character: The Ring

    · A. Basic state — not trustable

    · B. How might they really be not trustable, but appear trustable?

Initially, all members of the Ring appear trustable as they hold high positions of responsibility in the community

    · C. What circumstances might cause them to switch from one to the other?

At the beginning, each appears to conduct himself in proper fashion according to his position, but as the film progresses, each will act in a suspicious way suggesting they are not trustable. Each one’s connection with the Ring will be signaled by the revelation of a signet ring on his finger and by communication between the ring members.

Character: Red Herring #1 – Gym Teacher

    · A. Basic state — trustable

    · B. How might they really be trustable, but appear not trustable OR be not trustable, but appear trustable?

The Gym Teacher will not appear trustable because of his lack of an alibi and evidence (planted as part of a frame-up) makes him appear guilty

    · C. What circumstances might cause them to switch from one to the other?

The detective will find contradictory information and determine the trial was a railroad job, which will make the teacher then appear innocent.

Character: Red Herring #2 – Police Station Captain

    · A. Basic state — trustable

    · B. How might they really be trustable, but appear not trustable

During the Detective’s investigations, the captain will appear to be obstructing or misleading the Hero, but, in fact, he is always following police procedures. (This is to give some misdirection for the audience. Once there is a pattern of Villains in high places it will be looking for anyone who might be part of the Secret Society.)

    · C. What circumstances might cause them to switch from one to the other?

At the end, it will be revealed the Captain cared about the Hero.

    3. With each character relationship, brainstorm how trust or distrust might show up between them.

    · Hero / Villain:

Initially, the Hero has no reason to distrust any of the Villains. One by one each reveals he is not as he appears to be:

The police chief appears to interfere with the Hero’s investigation so the Hero begins to question the chief’s motives

The judge railroads the trial so that the Teacher is found guilty so the Hero suspects the judge is crooked

The superintendent will try to trap and kill the Hero so the Hero realizes he is not the nice guy he pretended to be.

    · Hero / Red Herring Character #1 – teacher

Initially, the Hero believes the teacher is guilty, but in an interview with the teacher, the Hero starts to have doubts and distrust turns to trust

Hero / Red Herring Character #2 – station captain

While initially trusting the captain, the Hero starts to suspect he is trying to thwart his investigation. At different points the captain appears to be hiding evidence, and at one point, to endanger the Hero’s life

    4. Create a sequence for each trust/distrust relationship (like I did with Three Days of The Condor) and then add that to your map.

In terms of trust/distrust twists I have developed the following:

    Hero/ Station Captain

(Here I want the audience to keep wondering if the Captain is part of the Ring.)

    1. Trust

The captain and the hero have a friendly, working relationship

    2. Distrust

The captain assigns the Hero to a high-profile murder case which is not his specialty.

    Trust

    3. The captain steers the Hero to a past assault case which provides a key clue to helping the Hero in his investigation.

    Distrust

    4. When a car appears to try to run over the Hero the captain downplays it as a “crazy driver hopped up on that new LSD drug.

    Distrust

    5. After a sniper shoots at the Hero from a rooftop, the captain collects the shells ahead of the Hero and also appears ready to push the hero off the edge of the roof.

    Trust

    6. At end, the captain has provided the Hero with a “ new-type” bullet-proof vest” which has saved the Hero’s life.

    Hero/ Superintendent (alias psycho killer)

    Trust

    1. At beginning, superintendent ingratiates himself into the initial investigation of the teacher by providing “evidence” against the fall guy who he is framing for a child’s murder.

    Distrust

    2. When questioned the superintendent lies about his transfers to different school areas where he committed additional acts of atrocities (which is a key clue to finding him guilty of the murder).

    Trust

    3. The superintendent phones the Hero to tell him his son has been selected as a “special student” and will get special school board recognition.

    Distrust

    4. The superintendent later phones and tells the Hero he is holding his son hostage (who will be bait to trap and kill the Hero).

    Hero/Detective’s Friend

    Trust

    1. At the beginning, they are good working buddies.

    Distrust

    2. The Hero overhears the captain assigning the friend to “oversee” the Hero’s activities and report all to the captain.

    Trust

    3. The friend helps a witness with a police sketch of a killer suspect

    Distrust

    4. The Hero finds the sketch “misplaced”.

    Trust

    5. The friend helps find the real killer.

    Hero/Judge

    Trust

    1. The Hero believes the fall guy will get a fair trial, based on the judge’s reputation as a good judge.

    Distrust

    2. The judge railroads the trial to ensure a guilty verdict is found and that raises the Hero’s suspicions.

    Superintendent/ Judge (Ring Leader)

    Trust

    1. The judge trusts the superintendent will kill the Hero.

    Distrust

    2. He has a back-up plan to kill the superintendent if he is captured by the police.

    6. Give us the new version of your Thriller Map.

No idea as to the format the Thriller map is supposed to take.

    Kathryn’s Trust Relationships

What I learned: what a major breakthrough this lesson was!!!! This lesson took my three hours and was well worth every minute. I learned that alternating trust and distrust works so much better in terms of intrigue, and keeping the audience on their toes than what I had–which was mostly one way then a switch. I moved scenes around, added scenes, took out scenes and changed the trust/distrust in existing scenes. I also learned I have to change the midpoint to save a reveal for later, but I haven’t done that yet. I am very excited.

    Leona Heraty’s Trust Relationships

What I learned doing this assignment is…adding trust and distrust into the main characters’ relationships makes the action more exciting and intriguing!

Create trust / distrust relationships between your characters and add them to your Thriller Map.

    1. Make a list of the main characters.

    Hero: McKenzie
    Villain: Tuvelle

Red Herring Character: Todd (as the Masked Figure)
    Trusted, but shouldn’t be: Tuvelle

Isn’t trusted, but should be: Todd (after he’s been unmasked by McKenzie)

    2. With each character, ask these questions:

    Hero: McKenzie
    A. What is their basic state — trustable or not trustable? Trustable

    B. How might they really be trustable, but appear not trustable OR be not trustable, but appear trustable? N/A-McKenzie is the hero!

    C. What circumstances might cause them to switch from one to the other? N/A-McKenzie is the hero!

    Villain: Tuvelle

    A. What is their basic state — trustable or not trustable? Not Trustable

    B. How might they really be trustable, but appear not trustable OR be not trustable, but appear trustable? Tuvelle appears trustable up until the climax, because she acts like the Masked Figure is after her, with the knife! Tuvelle also appears trustable because she asks McKenzie for help to get away from the Masked Figure, and she works with McKenzie where they both try to find places to hide from the Masked Figure.

    C. What circumstances might cause them to switch from one to the other? Tuvelle switches from Trustable to Not Trustable at the climax on Perilous Peak, when she reveals she’s been sabotaging McKenzie since November 1st and she hired Todd to chase them, and she followed her to work earlier that day!

Red Herring Character: Todd (as the Masked Figure)

    A. What is their basic state — trustable or not trustable? Trustable

    B. How might they really be trustable, but appear not trustable OR be not trustable, but appear trustable? When Todd is dressed as the Masked Figure and has the plastic knife that he waves at Tuvelle and McKenzie, he appears to be Not Trustable and dangerous. But when McKenzie pulls off his mask, and she discovers the knife is plastic, she begin to trust him and believe his story that he was hired by Tuvelle to chase them!

    C. What circumstances might cause them to switch from one to the other? After McKenzie pulls off Todd’s mask, and he shows her the knife is plastic, another knife appears strapped his leg, when he pant leg gets caught on some bushes, and the other knife is real!

    3. With each character relationship, brainstorm how trust or distrust might show up between them.

    Hero / Villain: McKenzie/Tuvelle

    TRUST: The doorbell rings at
McKenzie’s Mom’s house, so McKenzie answers the door.

    DISTRUST: Tuvelle, dressed as
the Masked Figure, leaves a large creepy cardboard figure of the Grim
    Reaper at the door.

TRUST: McKenzie finds Tuvelle hiding behind a tree, crying in fear.

    DISTRUST: Tuvelle says she’s
being chased by the Masked Figure and she’s twisted her ankle and she asks
McKenzie to help her. However, Tuvelle is lying, she hasn’t twisted her ankle.

    TRUST: Tuvelle tells McKenzie
she’ll stay hidden behind the big rock, if McKenzie will hike up to
Perilous Peak where she can get cell coverage and call 911.

    DISTRUST: Tuvelle also tells
McKenzie the main trails are washed out and she’ll never be able to make
it back to the Visitor Center for help, even though McKenzie thinks she
can find several old, unused trails back to the visitor center. Tuvelle
says McKenzie looks like a girl who “gets lost easily.”

    TRUST: Tuvelle tells McKenzie
not to trust Terry when Terry says that Tuvelle paid him to dress up as
the Masked Figure and scare them. She says Terry’s a nut and she never
paid him anything…and that he just enjoys scaring women!

    DISTRUST: Tuvelle coaxes McKenzie
up to Perilous Peak and helps her up over the cliff, then turns on her and
    Terry.

Hero / Red Herring Character: McKenzie doesn’t trust Todd when he’s the Masked
Figure, and isn’t sure she should trust him even when he says he was paid
by Tuvelle to scare them. When McKenzie sees the “real” knife strapped to
his leg, she is immediately distrustful of him and afraid. She trusts him
in the end, on Perilous Peak, when he begs her to not trust Tuvelle, who
is crazy and wants to kill them both.

    Hero / Trusted, but shouldn’t
    be:
McKenzie is the hero and is
trustworthy, but not always reliable because she has a poor sense of
direction and gets lost easily because she lacks confidence in her literal
sense of direction on the trails, but also metaphorically because she’s
unsure about the direction of her life and if she’s really on the right
career path or if she should change careers and go back to college to become
    a park ranger.
Hero / Isn’t trusted, but should be:

    4. Create a sequence for each trust/distrust relationship (like I did with Three Days of The Condor) and then add that to your map. See #3 above.

    5. Give us the new version of your Thriller Map.

    ACT 1

OPENING: McKenzie is driving to work, and is followed by a Masked Figure!

CURRENT DIRECTION: McKenzie blasts the music, keeps driving and is oblivious that she’s being followed.

TRUST: McKenzie parks her car in the lot by her office, not worrying about it, even though it’s a valuable classic car.

DISTRUST: McKenzie gets to her car in the lot and gets in and starts to drive, then hears a THUMP THUMP. She gets out and realizes her 4 tires are flat!

TRUST: McKenzie looks around, is a little spooked, but shrugs and gets the fix-a-flat out of her trunk and fills up the tires, shrugs it off and drives out of the parking lot.

TWIST: The Masked Figure speeds by her and shakes their fist at McKenzie, but McKenzie is looking down for a second and doesn’t notice.

INCITING INCIDENT: McKenzie’s Mom forbids her to hike alone at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, and wads up her flyer and hurls it into the trash! McKenzie stands up to her Mom and says she’s going anyway!

CURRENT DIRECTION: McKenzie grabs her keys and is about to head out the door, but she pauses to hug her Mom and sister and her Mom argues with her and tries to convince her not to hike to Perilous Peak.

TWIST: The Masked Figure gets out of his car, creeps
up onto rings McKenzie’s Mom’s doorstep, then leaves a large photo of the Grim
Reaper on the doormat, rings the doorbell and flits away like a phantom.

    TRUST: McKenzie opens the door,
without looking through the peephole, even though her Mom tells her to always
    do this.

    DISTRUST: McKenzie is taken aback
and a little rattled when she sees the large cut-out figure of the Grim Reaper.

TRUST: McKenzie she sees a group of
teenagers driving down the street and tells her Mom and sister it’s probably
the same kids who always toilet paper her Mom’s house on Halloween!

TURNING POINT AT END OF ACT 1: McKenzie finds a backpack in the cave with a note that says “I’m being chased by a guy with a mask and knife! Please help me!

TRUST: McKenzie immediately worries about the person who wrote the note and decides to try to help them. She completely trusts that the note is real and she doesn’t think for a second that it might be fake.

CURRENT DIRECTION: McKenzie is looking through the backpack for clues to the note writer’s identity.

TWIST: McKenzie pulls out a bloody white scarf and SCREAMS!

    ACT 2

TRUST: McKenzie follows the SCREAMS and finds Tuvelle huddled behind a rock, crying and distraught, and she immediately tries to comfort her.

MIDPOINT TURNING POINT: Tuvelle points to a red mark on her arm and a Black Widow Spider that’s nearby. She’s been bitten by the spider and she sprained her ankle!

DISTRUST: McKenzie says she can treat the spider bite with her first aid kit, but Tuvelle says she doesn’t need the treatment as she’s “built an immunity to Black Widow Spider bites” and McKenzie says she never heard of anyone building an immunity to Black Widow spiders and she should let her treat the bite anyway, but Tuvelle says no, it’s not necessary. McKenzie frowns, but reluctantly agrees not to do anything about the bite.

CURRENT DIRECTION: McKenzie wraps Tuvelle’s ankle with a bandage.

TWIST: A giant tree limb, battered by the rain, CRACKS and falls only a few feet away from them, making them both SCREAM!

    ACT 3

TRUST: Tuvelle tells McKenzie she’ll never make it back to the Visitor Center, it’s too dangerous with the washed out trails, and that she should try to get to Perilous Peak where she can get cell coverage and dial 911 for her.

DISTRUST: McKenzie says she’s sure she can find the alternate trail down to the Visitor Center and maybe she should just go back the way she came but Tuvelle tells her she’ll never get there. McKenzie says the guy with the mask could be luring them further away from the Visitor Center, and she’s afraid to keep going to Perilous Peak and she doesn’t trust her own sense of direction because of the rain.

TURNING POINT: HUGE FAILURE/MAJOR SHIFT: When McKenzie falls through the rickety bridge to the stream below and scrapes her leg on a rock and blood gushes out of her wound.

CURRENT DIRECTION: McKenzie surfaces from the water and crawls to the shore, her leg gushing with blood.

TWIST:<b style=”font-weight: bold;”> McKenzie picks her way through some downed tree limbs from the storm, trips and falls hits her bloody leg on a large stone, and SCREAMS in pain.

    ACT 4

CLIMAX/ULTIMATE EXPRESSION OF THE CONFLICT: Tuvelle, dressed as the Masked Ghoul, climbs over the edge, and looks around for McKenzie, and Terry climbs over the edge and lunges at Tuvelle, dressed as the Masked Ghoul. They struggle on the ground and McKenzie sees her chance and pulls off the Masked Figure’s mask, it’s Tuvelle!

TRUST: Tuvelle coaxes McKenzie over the ledge and puts her hand out to pull McKenzie over the ledge.

DISTRUST: Tuvelle steps on Terry’s hand and tries to push him back so he can’t get over the ledge. She said he’s the one who was wearing the Mask and the cloak, not her.

TRUST: Terry begs McKenzie for help up over the ledge, where he can prove to her that he’s trustworthy and that Tuvelle hired him to wear a mask and scare them. McKenzie believes him and helps him up over the ledge to Perilous Peak.

TRUST: Tuvelle runs behind a rock on Perilous Peak, to “use the facilities” and McKenzie tells Terry he’s mistaken, the Tuvelle is the one who’s the victim here, because he’s been chasing them.

    DISTRUST: McKenzie realizes that
Tuvelle just ran behind the rock…what happened to her sprained ankle? She
starts to question who Tuvelle really is and her motives.

    CURRENT DIRECTION: McKenzie is
stunned when she finds Tuvelle runs out from behind the rock, dressed as the
    Masked Figure!

TWIST: Tuvelle reaches out and SLAPS
McKenzie in the face, then rolls on the ground and SHRIEKS with demented
    LAUGHTER.

    Jeff Guenther’s Trust & Distrust

What I Learned: Trust and Distrust add yet another layer of thriller points, should probably be used lightly, not just for the sake of a twist, but when logical, maybe foreshadowed, thematic, in character, or totally unexpected, similar to other twists. This involves a ton of work.

    1. list of main characters.

    A. basic nature? trustable

    B. how might they be trustable but not appear so? pinch-penny attitude.

    C. What might switch them from one to the other? Loss of financial control.

    Clara (Poltergeist)
