Ted Tronsen’s Level 3 Horror Emotion Scene from Shadow Mountain

What I learned doing this assignment is the importance of escalating the tension and emotions in Act III. Anguish, Panic, Horror and Hysteria are the climax of emotions. The scene I wrote is actually in the beginning of Act III, however, I believe all of these emotions are elicited by the two murders that take place back to back. First, Emily is shot in the head with an arrow from behind, then Vincent is stabbed to death by a hunting knife after tripping and breaking his leg. This is just a rough draft of this scene and I will add more detail when I edit it.

ACT 3 — FULL OUT HORROR

Fight to the death – The seekers and guides decide to make a run for it and take flight by hiking out of the wilderness in the middle of the night. They leave their tents and most of their gear behind. There is a full moon which helps to illuminate the trail, but they also rely on flashlights and a kerosene lantern to be able to stay on the trail. A seeker (Emily) is suddenly shot in the head by an arrow. The group panics and run blindly away. The masked killer attacks another seeker (Vincent) who has fallen behind because he rebreaks a leg. They fight to the death in hand-to-hand combat and the seeker is stabbed to death by the masked killer with a hunting knife.

Monster Reveal: When Vincent engages in hand to hand combat with the masked killer, this is the first time the audience gets a good look at him, however, his identity remains a mystery.

Horror Situations: 1) Emily is shot in the head with an arrow. 2) Vincent is attacked by the killer and is stabbed to death.

Reaction: Fear, dread, panic, and hysteria.

    Character Death 6: Emily

Why? She is the slowest one of the group.

How? She is shot in the head with an arrow.

    Character Death 7: Vincent

Why? He rebreaks his leg and falls behind.

How? He is stabbed to death with a hunting knife.

    ACT III

EXT. OREGON WILDERNESS, ON TRAIL IN WOODS – NIGHT

A full moon illuminates the trail as Emily, Elise, Vincent, Christian, Brock, Todd and Michael flee the campsite and run away in a panic. They are being pursued by the masked killer who is now wearing night vision goggles and is hunting them.

As they run along the trail, they all have flashlights and Michael is leading the way with a bright Kerosene lamp. Todd, Elise, Brock, Christian, and Emily follow in that order. Emily falls behind and is shot in the head with an arrow.

    EMILY

Wait up you guys, I can’t keep up! Please!

    CHRISTIAN

Hurry up Emily! We can’t slow down we’ve got to get out of here right now!

An arrow hits Emily in the back of the head piercing her skull. The tip of the arrow penetrates her mouth and points out like a long straight tongue. She drops lifeless to the ground.

Vincent looks back at her while he is running and trips over a rock rebreaking one of his legs. He is visibly in agony.

    VINCENT

    (as he falls)

Shit! I think I just busted my leg!!

The others continue to run away moving forward on the trail. Vincent holds his leg writhing in pain on the ground. He is left behind.

    VINCENT

Ouch! It fucking hurts… Help me! Come back!!

The masked killer can be seen lurking in the background as Vincent crawls on the ground. He turns his head and clearly sees the killer slowly walking towards him brandishing a hunting knife. Vincent is visibly in a state of hysteria.

    VINCENT

Get the fuck away from me you fucking psycho! What the fuck do you think you’re doing?

The masked killer removes his night goggles and stands over Vincent. He slashes the back of Vincent’s broken leg with his knife. Vincent screams in pain, but somehow manages to kick the killer with his other leg, knocking him down.

Vincent and the killer begin wrestling on the ground and engage in hand to hand combat. Vincent knocks the knife out of his hand and they punch each other. As they struggle, the killer is able to mount Vincent, grab the knife and stab him.

The killer raises the hunting knife with both hands and brings it down with all his might stabbing Vincent repeatedly in the chest. Vincent spits blood and continues to struggle, then dies after being stabbed several times.

What I learned: Thinking of the emotions as a series of rising tension, put them in order for best effect. Start simply, then rise to more and more, until over the top.

PANIC: Wendy stands at the top of the basement stairs. Susan is calling for help. She looks at the front door. She can’t go out into the horrible storm. She looks down into the dark basement. She freezes; she cannot go down. Susan continues to call for help.

REAL PANIC & HORROR: Wendy is suddenly hanging by the hangman’s noose, pulled up off her feet. The noose tightens on her neck. She looks up at Brian on the second floor; leering down at her. She struggles, frantic. She tries to pull herself up on the rope to relieve the tension on her neck; it’s too slippery. Brian explains, “I oiled the rope so it would slip easily.” Wendy struggles and kicks. She can’t speak. Susan calls for help from the basement. Wendy tries to find a foothold on the staircase but cannot quite reach it. Brian explains, “It’ll take about 5 minutes. Then you can join Howard.”

Susan comes up from the basement, determined to get Wendy to help move Howard to the car. PANIC & HORROR: She finds her only hope hanging in the noose; still struggling.

HYSTERICS: “No, no, no!” Susan must save Wendy so she can help save Howard. Abandoning all caution, Susan charges up the stairs to the source of the rope.

Susan reaches across the banister, trying to catch one of Wendy’s feet. The banister and the baluster break, exposing a sharp stick, Susan is almost impaled as she reaches over towards Wendy. Susan screams in terror as she barely avoids the sharp stick of the broken baluster.

Gasping, Susan continues up the stairs. The grey slippers of another person appear on the top step as she goes up. Susan looks up:

Eight feet tall, grey but with bright red nail polish and lipstick some on her teeth, the woman from the portrait over the fireplace stands at the top of the stairs and glares down at Susan. She snarls.

    Susan gasps: “Grandmother!?”

Jeremy Cooke’s Level 3 Horror Emotion Scene

    INT. CRYPT – EVENING

Septimius and the police enter the crypt but find no trace of Victoria. They move past the flower-girl’s body and enter a tunnel.

Bones litter the floor. Septimius notes they are human.

When accompanying the police through the tunnels in the Crypt Septimius is cut off and lost. He is pursued through the tunnels by the cannibals until he comes to a barred dead-end though which he can see light.

Septimius hears the cannibals approaching through the tunnel as they scratch their metal claws against the sides.
He calls for help and the police dig him out just in time.

The Crypt is set alight and the police and Septimius pile in more fuel as we watch it burn.

Burning Cannibals flee and the police and military shoot them down.
