.Anna Harper’s Career Plan
What I learned from this assignment; is a very useful task to get this plan out of my head and onto paper. It was affirming in as much as I could see that I have already made some progress. For me, it is important to also have daily goals.
Please tell us the answers to these questions about your next six months of activity:
A. What is your overall screenwriting goal for the next six months?
My must-do is to sell two of my scripts as soon as possible, well before six months. Out of this goal, I really want a box office blockbuster, just because I would love to have the achievement. SILENT NIGHT is a contender, I am sure of it.
I have absolutely written scripts with commercial viability top of mind.
The outcome I am looking for is to have credibility in the industry so that selling scripts will be easier once I have broken into the industry.
My short-term or immediate goal is to finish up my Horror script,
The Long Dark (in the second act)
Finish up the second script in my mini-series; Village Fringe Productions Silent Night, (completed) Pirate, (halfway), and Cocoa (high concept only)
Silent Night is completed and will be working with my TOTE team almost immediately to get feedback.
Old Buffalo Hospital is completed and I will be marketing soon.
When I have successfully completed these tasks, I will be transforming the Village Fringe series (2 so far) into screenplays.
B. What are you going to do to elevate quality?
I will work harder on outlining, and not take off into writing before I have finished outlining.
I am creating hard copies of skill sheets for quick and easy reference for testing.
I feel I must prove myself in terms of selling a script and then will continue to invest in my education. It is time for the rubber to meet the road in my writing career.
C. How are you going to build a library of marketable scripts?
I have made a start.
My short-term or immediate goal is to finish up my Horror script,
The Long Dark (in the second act)
Finish up the second script in my mini-series; Village Fringe Productions Silent Night, Pirate, and Cocoa (now working on Pirate’s second act.)
Silent Night is completed and will be working with my TOTE team almost immediately to get feedback. My initial commercial goal is to have this script auctioned.
Old Buffalo Hospital is completed and I will be marketing soon.
When I have successfully completed these tasks, I will be transforming /the Village Fringe series (novels) 2 so far, into one feature screenplay.
D. What do you think might be your specialty (brand)?
Interesting and engaging story worlds that provide a unique stage to address current/relatable universal social issues with humour,( where possible,) magic, and love A little Spielberg and a dash of Charles Dickens.
E. How are you going to build a stronger network?
This is my crucible. Use the techniques taught to us in Pro Series. Have signed up with Imbd Pro. Use daily Kaizen. Measure activities.
F. How are you going to improve your understanding of doing this business?
Continuing to listen to producer interviews; Film Courage, and any other producer info I can get my hands on. Also by ‘doing’ not just agonizing and thinking myself into analysis paralysis.
G. How are you going to market yourself and your writing?
1. Whatever I can implement for Hal and Cheryl. 2. VPN 3 connect with actors who might want a role. Do forensic digging to find out relevant producers, ie not a shotgun approach.
I am very grateful to Cheryl and Hal for the knowledge and the tools to do my job.

DAY 12 – Creating a Career
Lisa Long’s Career Plan
What I learned from this lesson is important to remember that there are several steps to so to get a script sold. One is marketing yourself…a hard thing to do. But with the knowledge of PS and WIM and the support of the alumni, all things are possible.
A. What is your overall screenwriting goal for the next six months?
I will be taking the Writing Incredible Movies class until December 2022. I will work on the second draft of my PS81 script and develop a new script during the WIM2 class. And of course, continue to learn.
B. What are you going to do to elevate quality?
I will follow the steps that I have learned during PS81 and apply the new processes I will learn during WIM2. Apply the Kaizen, the T.O.T.E. process, and use the mastery skill sheets. I won’t submit any work until it is the absolute best it can be. Also, I will find out what I’m the best…at this moment, I think it’s dialogue…more analysis will be conducted over the next 6 months.
C. How are you going to build a library of marketable scripts?
By next year, I intend to have two scripts to market. And will begin work on another. I will continue to create and find marketable concepts to develop.
D. What do you think might be your specialty (brand)?
My specialty is female stories…Dramas, Comedies, Rom-Coms.
E. How are you going build a stronger network?
I am on the East Coast. So, I will review my social media accounts as often as possible and comment on the posts of strategic industry insiders as well as others in the business. I will engage with the other PSAs and build relationships in the WIM2 class too. I will attend virtual writing events such as the 2022 Screen Craft Writers Summit that I attended June 25-26.
F. How are you going to improve your understanding of doing this business?
I subscribed to Variety for years. I will include the Hollywood Reporter. But as suggested, I will pick out the articles that are relevant to my writing. I will learn the primary and next level knowledge. Network with potential fans of my genre. And include the Buzz process. As mentioned above, attend virtual writing events.
G. How are you going to market yourself and your writing?
As a lifelong introvert this is difficult for me. I plan on building my network while taking the WIM2 class. Then next year after I have two screenplays completed, I will begin reaching out to producers and production companies, sending out query letters, using my contacts, and any other way of marketing that I learn from Hal’s classes and the Alumni group.
Thank you to the PS81 class members for their feedback and camaraderie.
Thank you, Hal and Cheryl, for the guidance, knowledge, and encouragement.

Dev Ross – DAY 12 Career Plan
What I learned from this assignment is that writing great scripts is only half of the task. The rest is about being proactive and KAIZEN!
Please tell us the answers to these questions about your next six months of activity:
A. What is your overall screenwriting goal for the next six months?
I am going to continue to increase my marketing and pitching skills while improving the seven scripts I’ve already written. I will also pinpoint my specialty. As of now, I’ve written in a variety of styles and genres and need to focus on what it is that I truly excel at.
My short-term goal is to polish my current script and get it to my agent who is going to intro me to a manager.
I’m also way into getting my low budget youth movie off the ground. I’ve found possible investors and need to focus on breaking through all the way.
B. What are you going to do to elevate quality?
The first thing I’m going to do is to take the scripts I’ve had optioned or have gotten great feedback on and go back and apply what I’ve learned in this class to make them more marketable.
C. How are you going to build a library of marketable scripts?
I’ve already got at least seven scripts that have garnered interest but no sale. I’m going to go back and apply lessons learned to make their more marketable. After that, I am literally going to put myself through the class again to create another script.
D. What do you think might be your specialty (brand)?
I know I can write funny, whimsical and family movies. I’m in the process of seeing if I can make the move to darker, edgier films but my vote is still pending on this…
E. How are you going to build a stronger network?
Put into practice the techniques taught by the Pro Series. Kaizen!
F. How are you going to improve your understanding of doing this business?
By continuing to create more relationships with producers and learning their needs.
G. How are you going to market yourself and your writing?
1. Get a manager 2. Continue to network via Twitter, FB, IMDB, LinkedIn

Cameron Martin’s Career Plan
What I learned doing this assignment is…I may not have all of the answers, and even though a number of doors are closed to me, if I take creative initiative, I can make my own luck and forge my own professional career as a screenwriter.
A. What is your overall screenwriting goal for the next six months?
– My goal for the next six months to build a library of at least two additional marketable screenplays, that are designed with the intent of winning contests and furthering the brand established with OPEN WIDE.
B. What are you going to do to elevate quality?
– Continue studying film and structure, watching analyses, reading books and articles, taking additional ScreenwritingU courses that align with my brand, and writing my next projects through the ProSeries models, continuing to look for more breakthroughs.
C. How are you going to build a library of marketable scripts?
– Assess the current market and demands and try to match current trends and opportunities to what I have personal experience or knowledge with. One of the major breakthroughs for OPEN WIDE was shifting the initial concept toward a parent child relationship because those were (and still are) the struggles I could most relate to and write about.
D. What do you think might be your specialty (brand)?
– high-concept action, intense horror (preferably creature-features), and emotional, complex relationships.
E. How are you going build a stronger network?
– Continue social networking with a “slow and steady wins the race” approach. Attend contests and festivals when/where I can to meet and chat with people in person (much easier for me. Having no face to read, or voice to hear, really makes it difficult to connect).
F. How are you going to improve your understanding of doing this business?
– Read up on articles that discuss the topic, talk with others that have been working in the business. Side note, I came across a YouTube channel called “It Was A Sh*t Show” that talks about the behind the scenes turmoil that led to major Hollywood successes. It’s well edited and helps to communicate what can go wrong, which may help me to keep a calm demeanor through whatever trials and tribulations come along in this business. “Making things is hard” and I’ll have to practice the same level of professionalism I learned to apply in the insurance world.
G. How are you going to market yourself and your writing?
– Aside from any accomplishments (finishing a script, placing in a contest, or making a sale), there isn’t a whole lot else that comes to mind as it relates to regular social media marketing. However, one tactic I can make is to post an abbreviated version of a “what I learned doing this assignment is…” and keep it simple, personal, and not relate it to teaching how to write (so as to avoid the appearance of competing with ScreenwritingU). In addition, signing up for contests and creating a blog where I can post shorts, poems, and screenplays (various forms of writing) may be two other options as well. In the world of graphic design, there are apparently different themed months (Mer-May, Smaug-ust, Kaijune, etc.) where artists have daily challenges to draw based on daily prompts. Maybe there’re screenwriting versions of this, and if not, maybe I can implement something similar.
-
Dear Cameron,
Would you be interested in joining the TOTE team? I am delighted to say that June, Lisa and Anita are already onboard. I have invited everyone, I think. If you are interested let me know. We are exchanging scripts for feedback as life and time allow. If not, no worries. Best to you. Anna

Cam,
I never received notification of Hal’s last call on query letters. I’m trying to reach him to see how I can hear it, but it often takes them days to respond. Would you, perhaps, have any notes on the call you could share?
Thanks!
Dev

Hey Dev!
First! I’d love to be on a TOTE team with you! Second, I found the recording in the screenwriting classes. It’s the last class/assignment from the ProSeries.
Very quick summary:
next level Query Letter Structure—

Dev do this, go to the Screenwriting Lesson tab at the top of your page.
Go to the last lesson 50 click on that a page will come up. Don’t worry just click the link to book an appointment, some of us can’t find where to buddy up but it works anyway. The call recording will come up and the handouts. I did have to book before the call recording worked.

Creating a Career – Assignment
Mike O – Career Plan
What I learned from this lesson is that having a “plan” is the same as having a “process”. In that it keeps you focused, on track, and headed in the right direction. I have taught business, finance at the undergraduate and graduate level and I have seen success and failure. The one common denominator is lack of planning on the part of those who did not succeed. In every one of my classes, I would lay out a “plan” that incorporated, the homework, quizzes and tests and when they should prepare for each.
=====================================
Time to create your “Career Plan.” Please tell us the answers to these questions about your next six months of activity:
A. What is your overall screenwriting goal for the next six months?
Secure a movie deal for the script I have been working with in this class. Establish a rapport with a producer in this genre.
———————————————————————–
B. What are you going to do to elevate quality?
I will take the master skill-set sheets and review each one and make sure I have utilized the “ideas” in my script. I KNOW that by going through each process, I will improve the script. Kaizen!! J Additionally, send my script to contests, script consultants, etc. to test the quality. If I don’t receive a “Recommend” or “First Place,” you loop back to the beginning and do it again.
———————————————————————
C. How are you going to build a library of marketable scripts? I already have a “library” of marketable scripts. I am going to take each one and walk it through the Pro-Series writing class processes!!
——————————————————————–
D. What do you think might be your specialty (brand)? Holiday movies and televisions Teen adventure mystery drama.
——————————————————————-
E. How are you going build a stronger network? I am going to reach out to the producers on “Outer Banks” and pitch my television series that is in the very same genre. Likewise, I am going to pitch all the producers of the Christmas movies I researched.
————————————————————————
F. How are you going to improve your understanding of doing this business?
Become a member of Screenwriter’s Alumni and utilize the various services your organization provides.
——————————————————————————
G. How are you going to market yourself and your writing?
Build and utilize marketing campaigns, hone my query letter(s), phone pitches and put myself out there.

Partnering up?
In our forum it says to “partner up” in the day twelve lecture?? I am not sure where to post? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! 🙂
-
Hey Michael, I think you could be referring to the TOTE team. I have a few members on my team already and would surely appreciate your artistic and logical input. We are trading scripts with each other for feedback. If you want in let me know, if not, no worries. Anna
-
I would love to be included in your group. I appreciate the invitation.
-
-
I sent in a support form because I did not get this form apparently. I have no idea where to post the partnership. Lisa and I are doing the query letter exchange. Happy to accommodate anyone else. Just using the message board for this and completed my first script review for my
TOTE team. My email is villagefringeproductions@gmail.com
-
Hey Michael, did you already try this? Go to the top of your screen tabs where it says lessons,
go to the last page (8) and lesson 50. I had to book an appointment without buddying up. It worked anyway got the handouts and the recording. Also, it was a 30-minute exercise to click on all those little green buttons, which I never do, to say complete before it would let me get to page 50 usually I work from the e mails only.

Anita’s Career Plan
What I’ve Learned: Marketing myself and my work has always been the most difficult part of the process of writing (as I’m sure it is for most creatives). It can just feel overwhelming. And that’s why my number one goal is to secure a manager who can assist me in this process. That’s not to say I won’t be putting in the necessary work, because I am ready, willing, and able. But I am well aware of the time commitment in order to succeed. One reason I am being judicial about my time with social media (and not joining Twitter at this time) is that it can be a real time-and-energy suck for me. I don’t want to sap my creative energies and time with going down too many rabbit holes. So for me, it’s all about focus and balance. My previous contacts in LA are too old to resurrect; and my local contacts in <st1:state w:st=”on”><st1:place w:st=”on”>Oregon</st1:place></st1:state> – while they’ve been great and added to my production credits – don’t provide me with enough contacts for selling my script. So, I am in essence starting from scratch in the selling arena. And although I have already put in substantial efforts into my career, I haven’t had the precise tools provided through this ProSeries. So now it’s time to employ those tools in a metered, targeted manner!
A. What is your overall screenwriting goal for the next six months?
1) To sell my current script, Life Choices for either theatrical release or to a streaming service.
2) To write the next concept I’ve had on the back burner (A family adventure), using the outlining and other methods learned in this class.
B. What are you going to do to elevate quality?
1) T.O.T.E. the process until ready for ‘Exit’, which includes asking for feedback from all the right sources.
2) Remember KAIZEN!
3) Continue my education.
C. How are you going to build a library of marketable scripts?
While this script (LIFE CHOICES) is my 8th, and I have one optioned, I have no hard sales to-date. I can now see where my other screenplays can be improved. And I need to elevate my loglines (EX: I have hundreds of hits on Inktip on my loglines, but only a few script requests.) In addition, I need to hone my various pitches and query letters.
D. What do you think might be your specialty (brand)?
I write strong female leads, in various genres (drama, romance, dramedy, action. But not horror or straight-up comedy – which I haven’t tried yet, not believing these to be my forte.) I also have the advantage of maturity and many life experiences to enrich my story telling.
E. How are you going build a stronger network?
1) Use social media judiciously. Updating LinkedIn.
2) Network via on-line writing groups (like Stage 32).
3) Become a part of ProSeries Alum group / and other PSA opportunities
4) Continue to reach out to Indie producers (as some of my works suits this arena best)
5) Get more pro-active with Inktip Pro
F. How are you going to improve your understanding of doing this business?
I just joined IMDB-PRO
Areas I need more info about: when reaching out to a larger production company or talent, where do I start? (Their reps, agent, manager, etc)
G. How are you going to market yourself and your writing?
Send out Query Letters
And in general, get more PRO-ACTIVE!
-
Antonio Flores’ Career Plan
What I learned from this lesson
Improve Writing Quality should be an ongoing goal for me. I have been fortunate to join the end of an era, the last cohort of the ProSeries. It feels weird! The more you know, the more you know that there are things that you don’t know. Even more, there are things that you don’t know that you don’t know! But it feels warm. Writers are mind-alike, heart-alike. So many great people to be around in here!

C. How are you going to build a library of marketable scripts?
• Develop good pitches for the scripts I have as I continue to work on them

Indie drama, magical realism.
“I write fascinating characters whose stories bridge the worlds of reality and dreams, inviting new ways to discover and embrace our humanity.”

• Use Stage 32 for webinars, blog posts etc
• Via the Social Media and PSA interactions glean/learn what I can
• Ask questions where I am confused or quite ignorant!

• Print out this part of today’s lesson and out it with that Wall chart!
G. How are you going to market yourself and your writing?

June Fortunato’s Career Plan
What I learned: Making a list and posting it will be helpful. It’s extremely easy to lose sight of goals. Hopefully, this will help
Time to create your “Career Plan.” 1. Please tell us the answers to these questions about your next six months of activity:
A. What is your overall screenwriting goal for the next six months? Retirement sold, or optioned, festivals won, have an agent, writing new work.
B. What are you going to do to elevate quality?
In 6 months I will have incorporated changes and re-copyrighted my script. Received feedback from my TOTE list and perfected my marketing materials.
Script improvement:
1. incorporate notes 2. Review every scene for each character. 3. Review structure. 4. Review mastery sheets and Hal’s rewriting class.
Marketing materials improvement: Ditto, as above.
C. How are you going to build a library of marketable scripts? Started a new romance and /or reworked my previous ones, Trance & Clinical Trials. Contacted everyone on my tote list. Given feedback to everyone on my TOTE list.
D. What do you think might be your specialty (brand)? I write romances about offbeat people often on the edges of society.
E. How are you going build a stronger network? Reach out to everyone I listed on my TOTE assignment. Research and connect. I scan the trades and the NYT for articles/names and then research them when they’re connected to my genre.
F. How are you going to improve your understanding of doing this business? Speak to producers and reps.
G. How are you going to market yourself and your writing?
Contacted a hundred producers connected with Romantic comedies, written, called and followed up. Sent at least 50 scripts copies out. Signed up for IMDB and posted my resume there Blasted my query & pitched online Entered at least 15 festivals/contests who focus on romance and women. Made a plan to visit LA and make the rounds. Asked for help from the Philly film office. Secured an agent. Post my logline online.

Hey my fellow writers! I never got Hal’s notification of when the telecall on query letters was happening! Nothing in my email or spam, nada! If anyone has cliff notes that they’d be willing to share I’d be endless grateful!
Thanks!

Dev
I can’t find where the recorded teleconference is posted, either. If you find out, please let me know. I need to finish my query letter.
Dana
-
In case you haven’t found it yet, go to: your screenwriting classes, mark lesson 12 complete, and it’s the one titled, Query Teleconference. You can download the audio and written part.
-
Thanks June. I found it. I had to complete the partner up session first.

-
https://s3.amazonaws.com/SU_ProSeries_Teleconferences/PS50QueryLetterCall.mp3
Try this. If no good go to the forums page at the top click on classes go to class 50 and all will be well, except the buddy up thing. Just book an appointment and the teleconference and the handouts will be there for you. If this will not work for you, please let me know. I have one last tool to try.
-
Hi Dana!
I’m actually relieved that I’m not the only one who had trouble! Whew!
I haven’t accessed it yet, but you’ll see June has given you the info!
See you on the other side!
Dev
-
-
I didn’t either but I found a prerecorded query letter teleconference as the last listing in this module. I can send it to you as I downloaded it.

Hi Kate, go to lesson 50 the last lesson. Use the tab at the top of your forums page to navigate to the lessons page. In that lesson, you will see that we are to buddy up. Some are having issues trying to find the place to post so I sent in a support ticket. Meanwhile, some of us are using the msg board to buddy up and do exchange of query letters for feedback. You will see the teleconference mentioned there and a link to download the information we need for the call content. I simply signed up for an appointment and then the teleconference posting worked, not before I had made an appointment. Strongly suggest you give it a listen before having another go at the query letter. Please let me know if this helps or if you are still stuck.

PS81 – Dana’s Career Plan
What I learned:
The screenwriting process is far more involved that just writing a good script. You need to promote yourself every day, be proactive with your education and network. Preparation will eventually meet opportunity.
Career Plan
A. What is your overall screenwriting goal for the next six months?
I intend to complete the final draft of my thriller First Time Caller. I am currently on the 4th revision and hope to complete it within the next month. I will also work with my ScreenwritingU alumni to improve my query and pitch, and by the end of the year, I hope to submit my screenplay to festival competition and ultimately producers.
I am taking the Writing Incredible Movies 2 class for the remainder and hope to write the second script in the series for the class.
B. What are you going to do to elevate quality?
I intend to use all the lessons learned from PS81 and continue my education with ScreenwritingU, including the WIM classes currently in process.
I will implement the philosophies, skill mastery sheets, T.O.T.E, seek feedback from the ScreenwritingU alumni and friends, and when ready, work with script consultants to improve my future scripts.
C. How are you going to build a library of marketable scripts?
I intend to have the first two scripts for my thriller series completed for marking by the first of next year, if not sooner. I will watch for trends in the market and continue to create seed ideas and develop them into high concepts using the ProSeries process.
I also intend to rewrite past screenplays using my new PS81 skills and use them as part of my portfolio.
D. What do you think might be your specialty (brand)?
Thrillers and some comedy (as the mood strikes me).
E. How are you going to build a stronger network?
I intend to coordinate and update my social media accounts to include Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn into a professional dynamic. I will work with my PS and WIM alumni and network with family and friends in the industry with access to other professionals.
I intend to submit scripts to independent film festivals and online competitions.
F. How are you going to improve your understanding of doing this business?
Continue my ScreenwritingU education, read and watch interviews with top producers and industry insiders, seek advice from PS alumni, and communicate with members of the industry through social media.
G. How are you going to marker yourself and your writing?
By leaving my comfort zone. This is the most difficult area for me. I tend to be introverted. I need to work on my social networking skills and promote myself, entering contests and make writing deals for smaller project to get my name known.
I will continue to work with PS and WIM alumni and post queries and loglines for completed scripts online at suggested PS approved websites.

Wow June – you did all this??
Hmm – I am impressed and inspired and want to have the courage and committment do what you did!!!

Alice’s Career Plan
What I learned from this lesson is
I don’t know if it is “putting hard work for tomorrow”, but I would rather wait a little bit, and change some flows, review it, then market. And meanwhile coming back to rewrite my first script, which is hard task, I so much hate remake things, and that requires a vision, and sacrifices, and working on it, as I made it too long. And I already started checking it, which is much easier after taking ProSeries. I also was enrolled at Rewrite class, when we started writing, so I sacrificed it, and naturally dropped out. Why I want to come back to it is because it’s on the same theme, and might be easier to market.
1. Please tell us the answers to these questions about your next six months of activity:
A. What is your overall screenwriting goal for the next six months?
I plan to come back to my first script, rewrite it, and double the quality, to sell first, then offer the one I’ve written at ProSeries81
B. What are you going to do to elevate quality?
By taking your class
C. How are you going to build a library of marketable scripts?
I would rather take Incredible Movies class next time you offer it, and write next script doing assignments. As it proves to be more profound. But I started on Beat Sheet already.
D. What do you think might be your specialty (brand)?
My specialty is content ski fi. Techno society, destruction of planet as a result of evil scientific experiment, division into castes, advanced physical transformation, belonging of woman to the partner.
E. How are you going build a stronger network?
The way you advise it
F. How are you going to improve your understanding of doing this business?
By experience, learning from you, or intuition
G. How are you going to market yourself and your writing?
Via LinkedIn by sending Query Letters, or pitching. My first scenario might be easier to market as I’m less concerned about it. I know it has flows. If that does not work, I would go with my script I’ve written during ProSeries, about which I’m much more confident.
