Sunil Pappu’s Level 3 Action Emotions
“What I learned doing this assignment is…to use danger/excitement to either put the hero’s life at risk or provide relief when the hero is winning and then escalating danger to constantly keep the audience on the edge of the seat with adrenaline causing emotions.”
OUTLINE OF MY SCENE:
Danger: KGB Commander Mikhail orders the military canine unit and sends his agents on skis with automatic weapons… who are killed by Svetlana’s bare hands.
The KGB Commander orders more agents and sends assassins into the forest to take her down.
Adrenaline: She is chased by assassins on motorbikes airdropped into the forest. … she uses her sniper rifle on the move, quickly moving from one vantage point to the next using the natural terrain… takes out the chopper that blows up and comes down crashing.
Excitement: Barely escaping the blades, she picks up one of the satellite phones from the dead assassins to threaten Mikhail in Russian that she’s coming for him to teach him a lesson this time. He warns her that she’s a dead woman if she comes after him.
SCENE:
INT. GUARD ROOM. SIBERIAN PRISON – DAY
A deafening phone rings repeatedly. An injured military guard recovers from the blast and picks up the ringing phone.
MILITARY GUARD
Yes sir. Commander! Will send them!
The phone line goes dead…
EXT. SIBERIAN FOREST – DAY
Svetlana waits as open land covered in snow stretches ahead of her…
Distant barking of dogs… howls get louder.
Svetlana pulls up her tattered boots and stomps into the open field.
A snowmobile jumps off a nearby slope and lands in the snow field.
The canine unit rumbles on behind the ski bikes pulling a sledge with their handlers.
Svetlana speeds up and slips. She scrambles to get up and runs in a zigzag fashion to avoid the bullets.
The riders on snowmobiles continuously fire automatic weapons attached to their bodies.
Svetlana finds a loose log and lobs it at one of the vehicles and then crashes it.
The rider recovers but she tackles him and grabs his automatic rifle to shoot at the other rider heading towards them.
The other snowmobile loses control and crashes into the first rider. Svetlana jumpstarts the first snowmobile and takes off.
The canine unit gains ground on her, and they trap her from the other side. She gets to the end of the field which is at the cliff edge and jumps off the vehicle at the last instant and grabs a rock to hang off the edge.
The dogs stop in time, but their handlers are thrown off the sledge and down the cliff to their deaths.
Svetlana looks into the fierce eyes of the lead dog, and he slows relaxes his breath. She grabs the dog’s harness and pulls herself back up. She gets into the sledge and rides into the forest.
A helicopter banks and hovers close to the ground. Assassins on motorbikes jump off into the forest to chase after Svetlana.
ASSASSIN # 1 (O.S.)
(into a Sat phone strapped to his bike handle)
The Eagle team has landed. Over.
KGB COMMANDER MIKHAIL (V.O.)
Go for the kill. Over and Out.
The motorbikes race through the forest. Svetlana leaves the sledge and climbs up into a tree. She pulls out her rifle and sets it up. She waits…blows a dog whistle…
The first motorbike is blinded by the charging dogs and hits his body against a low branch and gets knocked down.
The second biker comes through, and Svetlana spots him through her rifle scope and takes him out. Two more come through but one of them gets a shot at her arm and knocks her down from her perch.
Svetlana crashes and lands near the motorbike and gets on it. She turns and races into the forest as the gunner in the heli spots her racing off and starts shooting through the trees. The last motorbike chases after her shooting with his automatic.
Svetlana spots high ground ahead and races to gain a vantage point.
The motorbike behind her catches up with her as her bike jumps off a slope and lands on a frozen lake.
She skids under the other bike and knocks it down.
They fight hand-to-hand on the frozen lake, and she defends herself using Krav maga moves to his Systema. She pulls out an unexpected move and the floor cracks. The fighter tries to grab her, but she kicks him down and rolls off to the side.
The heli gunner spots her and runs her down with machine gun fire. She races zig-zagging through the ice as the heli banks to take a turn. Pulling her rifle strapped to her back, she quickly sets up a sniper shot on the move and takes out the rotor. The second shot takes out the tail, and the heli goes into an uncontrolled spin and crashes into the frozen lake. The parts come apart raining down at her and cracking the ice.
A blade slices through the ice and stops short of Svetlana’s face.
She hears a muffled voice on the satellite phone strapped to the fallen motorbike and picks it up. The rider is not in the lake…
SVETLANA
(in Russian into the Sat phone)
I’m coming for you, Mikhail!
KGB COMMANDER MIKHAIL
(in Russian into the Sat phone)
Sveta… I told you to get out of the country… now it’s too late for you my girl…
SVETLANA
(into the Sat phone)
My turn to teach a lesson Comrade!… Don’t call me your girl!
KGB COMMANDER MIKHAIL
(into the sat phone)
You still have much to learn dear…
Sudden under her feet… she stares into the eyes of the assassin. The ice cracks and she falls through. The assassin grabs her and strangles her in the freezing water. He pushes her down and climbs out of the lake before he’s frozen to death. Svetlana loses consciousness and sinks deeper under the ice…
She faintly hears as everything goes into a haze: A sniper shot go off. A rescue dog’s muffled pants…water splashes as a body is being pulled out of a lake…a Military man’s face she’s never seen before…calling out to her…his lips move, but no sound comes out.

Danielle’s Level 3 Action Emotions
What I have learnd doing this assignement is immersing myself into the situation in order to be able to make the audience also feel the danger, excitement and the adrenaline in my scene.
1.
Obstacle : It is not easy to escape his bodyguards’s notice. Now the PRESIDENT mistrusts the people around him. He has to think wisely and act quickly.
2.
A cyber-attack shuts down all the White House computing system. Seized with a feverish urge experts are trying to identify the source of the attack and save the White House files. In the confusion the Security Services have lost track of the PRESIDENT and are in a panic. As he realizes he cannot trust anyone for the moment the latter who managed to take a sample of his own blood has taken refuge ouside the building on the balcony of the infirmary window.
3.
The PRESIDENT’s hot mobile phone is ringing off. Clinging on the balcony banister he does not answer. He seems rooted to the spot.
PERSONAL ASSISTANT’s messages
(On the President’s phone screen)
First message : Where are you, Sir ?
Second message : Secret services have locked down the perimeter.
Third message : Please, ANDREW, for God’s sake !
Fourth message : ANSWER ME ! Tell me you are in the RESIDENCE.
THE PRESIDENT
(He finally calls back)
Meet me at the delivery entrance !
Sound of footsteps rushing in the corridor. Andrew cuts off the phone and nimbly hides in a large tank filled with a pile of dirty linen.
Three men under arms burst into the room and look around.
One of them bangs his knee against the metallic linen tank.
He addresses a linen maid waiting at the door.
THE MAN
(with an angry look)
Chuck me this thingy !
In a hurry and with a stare look at the gun the middle-aged woman wheels the tank along the corridor towards an elevator.

Jan’s Level 3 Action Emotions
WIL ?: To structure action into a mix of different conditions where Danger, Excitement and as a result Adrenaline constantly change and therefore creating non dull Action entertainment.
Log: Kitty wants to go to town what becomes a white knuckle pursuit
Scene Outline: Kitty is waiting at a bus station on the outskirts of Valetta when an open jeep stops by and Sylvie a young student offers her to take her with to town. When chatting Kitty realizes five e-trial-bikes closing in to chase them. They are small yet very fast. Kitty asks Sylvie to speed around the corner, slow and speed again, and get lost.
Behind the corner Kitty jumps off the jeep and hides, the goons follow the Jeep, Kitty makes the last bike turn over, she hits the driver unconscious. Kitty puts on his jacket and helmet and follow the goons.
After the goons realize that Kitty is not in the jeep they turn around , Kitty gives Sylvie a thumbs up and follows them only to take a different route on th enext fork. Goons find their unconscious guy and turn again for the fish bike.
A wild chase ensues through fields of high season’s growth, a jumps, through a beach front club, volley ball fields into a muddy bay fighting with a goon dangling from a chopper, narrow and steep village street, up and down stairs and finally into an unsolvable situation where Kitty is too fast to avoid a collision.
EXT. BUS STOP – DAY
SETUP Near her new apartment, outskirts. KITTY waits by a bus stop, compares the timetable with her phone.
An open Jeep stops, SYLVIE (26ish local) looks at Kitty
SYLVIE
Newbie in town?
KITTY
Is that so visible?
SYLVIE
Checking timetables? Yes. Wanna come with, down town?
Kitty walks around, hops in. Off they go.
INT.EXT. JEEP – DAY
SYLVIE drives the open Jeep over outskirts roads, Valetta and the sea downhill already visible.
KITTY
You speak totally without accent
SYLVIE
We all do
She points over her shoulder
SYLVIE
It’s the Canadian University on Malta.
KITTY
No shit, Canada runs a U here? Cool
Kitty checks the traffic regularly behind them
SYLVIE
(smirks)
Yep, only three years old. We’re kind of guinea pigs, but it’s brand new though. And the internet is a blaze.
KITTY
So you guys are why I move up here, my apt uses your signal.
SYLVIE
What are you here for?
DANGER : Kitty registers five e-motobikes closing in, yet nothing weird
KITTY
I am starting at the Queens and Kings. I am a white hat.
SYLVIE
As resident white hat on Malta? How cool is that?
Kitty changes mood
KITTY
Not sure yet. Take the next left, slow down then and then speed and get away
SYLVIE
What?
KITTY
Please do. We re followed, don’t turn around check your mirrors. See the motos?
SYLVIE
Yes
KITTY
Ok, speed up, then left.
EXCITEMENT: Sylvie checks on Kitty, she is serious. She hits the pedal and the Jeep jumps forward.
INTERCUT
DANGER: The goons on the e-driven bikes react and increase the speed easily.
CUT BACK
The Jeep takes down the road and turns a sharp left. Sylvie hits the brakes and ….
ADRENALINE:… Kitty jumps out and rolls away before the Jeep stops
Kitty waves Sylvie to speed it and covers.
DANGER: The bikes come around the corner and chase behind the Jeep when…
EXCITEMENT:… Kitty jumps out of from her cover and knocks the last goon off his bike.
The other four bikes are in pursuit of the Jeep.
Kitty hits the helmet of the goon two three times against the tarmac making sure he’s unconscious. She take the helmet off and his biker jacket and take them on. She picks up the bike from the street, jumps on it and follows the others.
DANGER: The four bikes become five again and stop the Jeep. Kitty stops on the other side of the Jeep, tries to hide her cut off jeans and naked legs.
GOON BIKER
Where is the other lady?
KITTY
I don’t know. She got off at her final destination, back there at the corner
GOON BIKER
Heck, back guys
He makes the biker sign for turnaround and off they speed, from where they came.
EXCITEMENT: Kitty takes a bit more time to turn, gives Sylvie a thumbs up, only now Sylvie realizes who is behind the helmet visor and grins, makes a call me sign. Kitty follows the other bikes
Kitty drives behind the four bikes, the street forms a fork and Kitty takes the other road.
The Goons arrive at the corner and find Goon 5 unconscious on the boardwalk. And no bike.
GOON BIKER
We were five at the Jeep? Right?
Goon biker 2 and 3 look at each other, nod
GOON BIKER
She‘s playin us, God dammit. Back.
DANGER: Chase,
Kitty realizes the goons are back in pursuit she drives off the road into
ADRENALINE: …high season’s growth. Chase
Kitty sees that the field ends and a natural wall of rocks is in her way, …
EXCITEMENT:… she uses three rocks as a ramp and jumps high over the wall of rocks, only …
ADRENALINE: …to see the beach is two floors lower than were she jumped of, she flies with the bike and lands on sand …
… in a beach club, jammed with party people.
EXCITEMENT: Goon 2 lands unfortunate, his chase is over. Goon Biker, Goon 2 and Goon 4 make it and follow Kitty through the beach club
Kitty speeds through people jumping out of her way, a dance floor, Goon Biker makes a waiter with tablet go flying.
Kitty ducks and sideways her bike, makes it under a volleyball net, Goon 4 is too close, he stays on the beach volleyball field.
Kitty speeds out of the club and around a corner through the sea, speeding with a gist of water behind her.
ADRENALINE: Suddenly the bike slows down more and more, Kitty checks the bike seems ok. She realizes she is driving on a weird kind of mud. She throttles the gas down and the bike takes up speed but refuses to speed again. Kitty has to drive slow.
EXCITEMENT: Kitty turns, the goons have to drive slow as well. Cool.
DANGER: A chopper shows up, a goon roping down from the bird.
The goon on the rope sinks towards Kitty and tries to grab her.
ADRENALINE: Kitty jumps into a stand up position to be able to fight back, Kitty stands sideways on the bike, controlling the throttle with one foot, to keep it moving and fighting the goon with her hands.
DANGER: Kitty is running out of time, she has almost crossed the bay.
EXCITEMENT: She ducks and the goon tries to follow when Kitty jumps and finishes him with a roundhouse kick in mid air while turn and flip back into her drivers position.
Kitty gets out of the mud and speeds again, the goons still in the mud.
Kitty reaches a road that leads into an ancient village.
DANGER: The goons out of the mud racing behind her…
EXCITEMENT: … and all into an old village, through small, narrow and curvy streets,
…into a bazar, stairs down und up.
DANGER: Kitty speeds around a corner and on a Piazza with a large terrace over the sea. From the only other street across the place comes a huge delivery truck and cuts off all her alternatives. The truck rolls towards the terrace, Kitty is too fast, there is no way out, they gonna collide ….
ADRENALINE: … Kitty takes the bike onto the side and glides underneath the truck …
…Kitty rolls away from the bike and she is still too fast
… the bike glides on the cobblestones like on ice
The goons manage to stop and arrive just in time to see …
…how the bike breaks through the balustrade and goes flying into the sea….
… while Kitty is rolling sideways into a store and out of sight.
Goon Biker drives to the place where the bike broke through, looks down. The sea and nothing else.
GOON BIKER
Holy shit.
EXCITEMENT: No Kitty, she s gone.
RELIEF Lucky Kitty stranded in a store for beach accessories and rest within a pile of inflatable rubber ducks, unicorns and swans. She takes the helmet and the jacket off, looks at her legs and hands and sees the lizard pulses excited.

Laura Woodworth’s Level 3 Action Emotions
What I learned doing this assignment is that I have a number of places in my current script where the action emotions can be better incorporated! My plan over the long Labor Day weekend is to tear it apart and elevate scenes. This has a long way to go.
Create a scene that uses all three of these Action emotions.
1. A scene that could use danger, excitement, adrenaline: Rachel’s scene where she allows herself to be kidnapped.
2. Outline:
Danger: She sees Martin and Majd as she enters the partk.
Suspense: We see them stalk her.
Excitement: She tries to run, evading them. It seems she’s shaken them…
Adrenaline: But they appear out of nowhere and grab her.
EXT. PARK – DAY
Rachel enters the park. To her left, she notes two dark figures watching her. She turns right and forces herself to maintain her pace, to not let fear dictate her movement.
RACHEL
God forgive me. I don’t know what else to do to stop this.
Martin and Majd split up and she loses sight of them. She breathes a sigh of relief as a group of joggers approach — postponing the inevitable. She picks up her pace and snakes in and out among the joggers. She skirts around walkers and eyes Martin ahead.
She bolts and takes a side path. As she turns a corner —
BAM! The phone is knocked out of her hand as Majd grabs her from behind, jerking her arms back to flex cuff her wrists. Like a dream played out, she goes without struggle — shoved into the back of the familiar dark van as Martin jumps into the driver’s set.
MAJD
What about her cell phone?
MARTIN
So they can track her? Leave it.
Majd jumps in and the van speeds away, Rachel’s cell phone left behind in the grass.

Nick’s Level 3 Action Emotions
What I learned: I need to get more detailed in some areas to show the danger and to build up the adrenaline and excitement.
DANGER: Juan hides under cultivator as Moose looks for him.
ADRENALINE: Moose discovers Juan and the dog and sets about killing them.
EXCITEMENT: As Juan drives his weaponized leg through Moose’s abdomen to save the dog.
SCENE:
INT. MACHINE SHED – NIGHT
Moose stares at the arrow-like depressions in the dirt floor. He kills the motor, drops the kickstand, gets off.
He picks up a prosthesis part from the dirt. He’s looks at it curiously, then it dawns on him what it is. He tosses it away, draws his knife, and follows the arrow-like depressions out.
EXT. SPRING-TOOTH HARROW – CONTINUOUS
Moose, eyes to the ground, following the arrow-like impressions, rounds the harrow and stops. He bends over and looks under the harrow.
MOOSE
So, there you is, onion pecka! We be lookin’ all ova fer you.
Moose grabs for him.
The dog shoots out, snarling, and clamps her teeth onto Moose’s ankle. Moose kicks out. The dog viciously rips into the ankle.
MOOSE
Aaaah, you bitch!
Moose raises his knife to strike the dog. Juan swings a crowbar to block. THWACK! The knife flies into the weeds.
Moose looks down at his throbbing hand, then snatches Juan by the wrist, forces him to his knees.
MOOSE
Gotcha!
(eyes widen)
Aaaah!
He looks down, alarmed, as the dog viciously rips into his raw tendon. He wrenches the crowbar from Juan and swings it awkwardly at the dog, but misses.
Desperate, he shoves Juan away and swings the crowbar at the dog again, this time grazing her head. She hangs on.
MOOSE
Aaaah!
Moose gets his balance back and wields the crowbar for the kill. Juan twirls himself around, then
THUK! An arrow-shaped spade pops out of Moose’s chest. A glistening PANCREAS dangling from its tip.
Moose freezes wide-eyed, stares incomprehensibly at the thing sticking out from his chest. He slowly clutches the spade, as if to feel if it’s real. He plucks the pancreas off and stares at it like he might eat it.
He looks incredulously over at Juan, who stares incredulous back, hopping on one leg, the other lodged into Moose’s back.
Moose’s eyes roll up as he slowly topples forward flat on his face. Juan crashes to the ground with him.
Juan pushes against Moose’s body trying desperately to pull out his prosthesis blade, but it won’t budge.
The SOUND OF HARLEYS approaching.
Juan shoos the dog away.
JUAN
Go!…Go on…Git!
The dog tilts his bloody head inquisitively, then turns, hops into the weeds and disappears.
Juan drags Moose’s huge carcass behind him as he desperately claws his way back to the dark shadows of the cultivator.

I’d like to make my scenes tighter the emotions are spread across several scenes.
Rachel has just caught up with Mark who has just stolen a deadly virus from a local laboratory. She’s on her own except for Dockery watching over her from the helicopter. On the ground Rachel is outnumbered but still confident she can take down Mark and his crew which she does she’s winning but then is caught out in the forest and she loses as Mark kidnaps her at gunpoint.
Rachel is in danger there’s some excitement and adrenaline but perhaps not enough. I’d want to spend a bit more time tightening and elevating these scenes.
EXT. BARN – DAY
Rachel picks up her smartphone “no signal”. She’s pacing, considering her next move when…
EXT. CAR PARK – DAY
The BARN DOOR slowly OPENS. Rachel runs behind a water tank adjacent to the barn.
Seven Consortium SOLDIERS emerge from the barn, each is wearing a small brown backpack and carrying a 10” submachine gun with a silencer.
EXT. BARN – DAY
Rachel readies her gun and walks out from behind the water tank. Cooley and calmly she shoots three of the Soldiers in the hand, they drop their guns, she then shoots them fatally in the head.
EXT. WATER TANK – DAY
The remaining two return FIRE. Rachel takes cover behind the water tank and quickly reloads.
EXT. PARKING LOT – DAY
The remaining two Soldiers run to their cars while FIRING in Rachel’s direction. Rachel shoots each car’s gas tank. EXPLOSIONS erupt across the parking lot killing them.
The remaining two Soldiers run into the FOREST.
Rachel runs after them.
EXT. FOREST – DAY
Rachel reaches into her ankle holster and pulls out a hand gun. UP AHEAD she hears someone moving through the forest.
She runs to catch up.
IN THE BACKGROUND: Dockery’s CIA helicopter buzzes overhead.
Suddenly, Rachel is grabbed from behind by Soldier #1. THEY STRUGGLE. She kicks the gun out of his hand. She punches him.
She’s reaching for her gun. He’s on top. She grabs the gun and ROLLS them: BANG. He’s LIMP and bleeding. He’s DEAD. She pushes him off her then stands up and keeps walking when…
A gun CLICKS. Mark is standing behind her with his gun touching the back of her head.
MARK Drop the gun.
Rachel tries to elbow Mark in the stomach, but he backs away, then lunges, grabbing her by the throat and squeezing her in a headlock. She tries to shoot him, but she drops her gun when he squeezes tighter. He picks it up.
MARK
Now that wasn’t so bad, was it.
He searches inside her jacket pocket and pulls out her ID. He looks at it.
MARK
Agent Gilroy, welcome to the party.
He cuffs her. Soldier #3 joins them.
MARK
(pushes her)
Move.
Rachel, Mark, and Solider #3 retrace their steps through the forest towards the BARN.
INT. CIA HELICOPTER #1 (MOVING) – DAY
Dockery pilots. NOSE CAM POV: Rachel, Mark, and Soldier #3 emerge from the forest.
Suddenly, the helicopter’s tail is HIT with a rocket, it SPINS and DROPS to the ground.
EXT. FOREST – DAY
Rachel looks up to see CIA HELICOPTER #1 spinning: it lands awkwardly a small fire flares up.
She begins to run towards it, but Mark hauls her back towards a black PICK UP.
RACHEL
What the fuck!
Mark smirks.
MARK
Get in the car.
