Ed’s LEVEL 3 Horror Emotions Scene
What I learned doing this assignment. Because the way we already structured the acts and escalation of action. It felt natural to be able to build in the level 3 emotions as the story calls for a higher level of reaction given what the characters have already experienced. I’m learning a new vocabulary for describing grizzly acts. Cool!
EXT. SKI LODGE – LIFT SHED – NIGHT
The blizzard rages on. We can barely see Ava, scurrying about, flipping levers, releasing brakes. The lift jolts loose. The chair swings. She steps in right before it exits the shed. She’s on her way down.
INT. SKI LODGE – SECOND STORY LANDING – NIGHT
Krampus pushes open the double doors. Through the blizzard Ava is seen fussing about in the ski lift shed. Krampus waits for an open moment. He readies the cross bow.
INT. LOBBY – NIGHT
Down below, Linda, is held back by Michael, James, and and Susie.
LINDA
Let her go! She’s just a baby! Ava!
You Monster!
She struggles some more. Her passion overwhelming. She breaks free and takes the massive wrench out of Susie’s hand.
SUSIE
Don’t! He’ll kill you too!
LINDA
She’s my child !
Linda runs up the stairs. Michael starts to go after her.James stops him.
EXT. SKI LODGE – SECOND STORY LANDING – NIGHT
We see the chair lift clear the shed just twenty yards away. It’s an easy shot despite the snow. Krampus aims, his finger rests on the trigger…
EXT. SKI LIFT – NIGHT
Ava clears the lift shed. She looks over to the lodge. Krampus stands at the ready. The cross bow aimed right at her. She looks for an escape. Too high to jump. No cover in the lift chair. She’s locked in. Trapped.
She sees her mother through the lodge windows running for Krampus.
AVA
Momma! No!
INT. SKI LODGE – SECOND STORY LANDING – NIGHT
Just as Ava screams, Kramus pulls the trigger, simultaneously, Linda clocks Krampus over the head with the wrench. TWING the bolt, sails free of the cross bow.
EXT. SKI LIFT – NIGHT
Ava ducks. The bolt strikes the lift tower just ahead of her. It ricochets back at Ava, thwamp! It strikes her in the chest, but does not pierce. She exhales. Then…mother?
EXT. SKI LODGE – SECOND STORY LANDING – NIGHT
Krampus is enraged. Linda shrieks and cowers.
LINDA
Look away Ava! Look away!
James and Michael stop on the landing just behind Krampus . Krampus raises the wrench, ready to strike down Linda. James attacks but is quickly dismissed by Krampus, pushed to the floor.
EXT. SKI LIFT – NIGHT
Through the blowing snow, the glow of the lodge would be a post card setting , if it were not for Krampus, on the landing, now crushing Linda’s skull in with the wrench. Ava watches , struggles to get down, helplessly as her mother is bludgeoned to death right before her eyes. She screams, terror and sorrow, and shock.
INT. SKI LODGE – SECOND STORY LANDING – NIGHT
At the feet of Krampus, James screams, hysterical, for Krampus to stop. Fragments of Linda’s brain, blood, and skull rain down on him. He closes his eyes held tight. He covers his ears, protection from the blows cracks. His screaming filling the lobby.
In the background the faint screams from Ava, as she descends down the ski lift.
INT. LOBBY – NIGHT
Susie covers her ears, trying to drown out James screams. Michael holds her tight.

ASSIGNMENT #12
Claire’s Level 3 Horror Emotion Scene
What I learned: Again, I could not get all four emotions into one scene, so I wrote two scenes. Now that we are at the end of the story, I can see the difference between the emotions. It’s getting really crazy now.
INT. FARMHOUSE – NIGHT
Maeve lies on the floor catching her breath. Regina comes out of the room.
REGINA
Are you okay, baby?
Maeve nods yes. Regina hugs her. Regina SCREAMS and jolts. She thrashes on the floor.
REGINA
Maeve, help me.
Maeve cries as she watches the spirit possess Regina.
MAEVE
Fight it, baby!
Regina calms down and catches her breath. She smiles at Maeve. Maeve takes her hand to help her up. Regina gives her an evil smile. Maeve SCREAMS and runs out the door.
EXT. FARM – NIGHT
Maeve runs and Regina follows, CACKLING like a mad woman.
REGINA
(in a sing song voice)
I’m gonna get you!
Maeve turns and sees Regina running at her like a lunatic. Maeve GASPS and runs faster.
Regina literally flies and jumps in front of Maeve still CACKLING. Maeve’s eyes bulge as she stops short, turns and runs.
But Regina grabs her hair and pulls her back.
REGINA
Where are you going, baby? Don’t you want some love?
She punches Maeve in the face. Maeve SCREAMS in pain.
MAEVE
Regina, fight it, please.
Regina gets right in Maeve’s face.
REGINA
Regina’s not here anymore?
She CACKLES again, but her cackling is cut short when someone hits her on the head with a branch and she falls to her knees.
It’s Zora. She pulls Maeve up.
ZORA
Run!
Maeve and Zora both run toward the river. Maeve turns to see she is outpacing Zora.
Regina wavers on her knees. She shakes her head and smiles. She is stable again. She stands and runs after Maeve and Zora.
Maeve turns and sees Regina trailing them.
MAEVE
Zora, run!
Zora tries to run faster but it is not enough. Regina catches her and throws her to the ground.
REGINA
Maeve, look what I got!
Maeve turns to see Regina holding a knife to Zora’s throat.
MAEVE
No!
ZORA
Run, Maeve, run!
Regina gives a wild screaming laugh and slices Zora’s throat.
Maeve stumbles and falls then stands and runs. She enters the river.
Regina grabs her laughing.
REGINA
You thought you could get away from me!
MAEVE
Please, Regina, no. I’m begging you! You love me. Remember? You love me and I love you. Please, please, don’t do this!
Regina LAUGHS and pushes Maeve under the water. Maeve splashes frantically under the water. Regina’s head is right above hers LAUGHING at her. Maeve tries to free herself from Regina’s grip but cannot.
Maeve feels around and finds a stone. She lifts it and Regina stumbles and drops her. Maeve escapes from her. As she reaches the shore, Maeve turns and sees Regina is face down in the water.
MAEVE
Regina!
Maeve runs back to Regina and pulls her out of the water. Regina’s body is lifeless. Maeve GASPS.
Regina’s eyes pop open and Maeve SCREAMS and drops her. Regina LAUGHS uncontrollably. Maeve runs.
REGINA
You should have seen your face! I really got you that time.
Maeve is on the shore running. Regina runs behind her. Maeve turns just as Regina seems to hit a wall and fall back on the ground, stunned.
Maeve’s eyes open wide in understanding.
MAEVE
You can’t leave the farm.
Regina opens her eyes, gathers herself and stands.
REGINA
You really think you’re gonna stop me?
She takes out a knife and puts it to her throat.
REGINA
I’ll kill this bitch if you don’t come to me.
Maeve’s eyes dart as she thinks. She then gives Regina a frightened look.
MAEVE
Please, please don’t hurt her.
Maeve walks toward Regina. Regina’s reaches out, but Maeve slips away LAUGHING.
MAEVE
Ha, ha! You think you’re so smart, you can’t catch me.
Maeve runs and Regina follows. Maeve runs toward the invisible wall. Regin smashes into it and falls back again, stunned.
Maeve grabs her feet and pulls her toward the wall. Regina begins to SCREAM in agony. Maeve pulls and pulls and gets her feet through.
Regina looks terrifying. Her body warps in weird ways. She tries to stop Maeve but is losing strength. Her feet appear normal as they pass through the invisible wall.
Regina makes one last effort to free herself and ROARS at Maeve. Maeve ROARS right back and pulls Regina through the wall.
Regina lies on the ground, battered and not breathing. Maeve gives her CPR. Regina takes a deep breath and opens her eyes. Maeve CRIES. Regina CRIES.
REGINA
I’m so sorry. I couldn’t stop it.
Maeve kisses her.

Madeleine Vessel’s Level 3 Horror Emotion Scene
What I learned doing this assignment is the horror emotions of anguish, panic, horror, and hysteria can be easily conjured up, given a little thought. Doing so, is FUN!!
My scene that uses these horror emotions: anguish, panic, horror, hysteria.

LESSON 12: LEVEL 3 HORROR EMOTIONS
MICAH’S LEVEL 3 HORROR EMOTIONS SCENE
EXT. INTERSECTION NEAR HOTEL – NIGHT
Finally, the intersection is clear. Police wave the strobing fire truck through.
EXT. HOTEL – NIGHT
The fire truck pulls up in front of the hotel, the giant wheel crunching rubble. The FIGHTERS jump out.
The ladder is extended up to the window of Nico and Candyce’s room, heavy rain spattering against the rungs.
A lone FIREFIGHTER scales the ladder, a coil of rope over one shoulder.
INT. NICO AND CANDYCE’S ROOM
The firefighter climbs in through the window. With a click, his flashlight expels a thick white beam that reveals the charred room.
FIREFIGHTER: Holy smoke. (calling) Hello!
Moving through the room, he comes across the fallen cabinet and what remains of Lily.
He kneels down beside her, and with a peek beneath the cabinet confirms she’s beyond help.
FIREFIGHTER: Jesus.
He gets back to his feet.
INT. HOTEL HALLWAY
The firefighter steps out into the hallway. A shudder runs through him, and he hugs his arms closer to his body.
FIREFIGHTER: It’s like a freezer in here. (calling) Hello, can anybody hear me?
INT. FARTHEST ROOM
Nico, Candyce, and June all react to the call.
INT. HOTEL HALLWAY
The three women step out into the hall. June lights up the hallway with her phone.
NICO: Who’s there?
FIREFIGHTER: Fire Department.
He follows the voice and comes to the gaping hole in the floor.
FIREFIGHTER: Where are you?
NICO: Over here.
FIREFIGHTER: That’s helpful. Are you able to come to me?
The women look at each other.
CANDYCE: We’ve got to.
She takes Nico’s hand. Then June’s.
Nico breathes in courage.
NICO: Alright, we’re coming.
The three snake up the hallway. As they near the corner, the cold hits them. Goosebumps raise on their flesh. Candyce sucks in air.
NICO: Yep. Keep going.
They keep on moving. Candyce lets out a cry. The others jump.
Candyce exhales heavily. It’s a contraction.
They round the corner.
The collapse in the floor divides the women from their rescuer by some eight feet.
FIREFIGHTER: Are you okay?
NICO: Far fucking from.
There’s a loud creak, and the firefighter looks down at his feet.
NICO: We gotta move fast.
The firefighter uncoils his rope.
FIREFIGHTER: Here’s what we’re going to do. I’m going to toss you this rope. You’ll jump, and I’ll pull you across.
CANDYCE: I can’t.
NICO: Yes, you can.
CANDYCE: No, I caaa-
She doubles over with another contraction.
JUNE: Here. I’ll go first. Just watch me.
FIREFIGHTER: Catch.
He tosses his flashlight to Nico. Then he tosses one end of the rope to June.
FIREFIGHTER: Wrap it around your arm.
June coils it around her foreman, then grips it with both hands.
FIREFIGHTER: Back up. Give yourself a running start.
She does.
FIREFIGHTER: You ready?
June nods.
Nico and Candyce, watch, crushing each other’s hands.
FIREFIGHTER: One, two, three.
June charges forward and leaps. The firefighter runs backward, clearing space as June makes it to the other side.
Nico and Candyce exhale together.
The firefighter collects the rope from June.
FIREFIGHTER: Alright. Baby-Mama.
CANDYCE: (to Nico) I can’t do this, I can’t—
NICO: Shut up, yes you can.
Nico kisses Candyce.
NICO: You’ve got this, okay?
Candyce nods, not believing it.
The firefighter tosses the rope to Nico. She guides it into Candyce’s trembling hands.
NICO: Wrap it around.
Candyce coils it around her forearm.
NICO: June.
She tosses the flashlight to June. Then she grips Candyce by the arms.
NICO: I’m gonna be with you right up until the jump. Okay?
Candyce nods.
They back up.
FIREFIGHTER: Here we go. One, two, three.
They start forward. The firefighter pulls.
At the edge of the drop, Candyce is hit by a hard contraction and cries out. She loses her grip. The rope comes out of her hand, tugging her arm. The firefighter stops.
Candyce is pitching forward when Nico pulls her back. Candyce clutches her belly.
NICO: I got you I got you I got you. You okay?
Candyce breathes heavily, nods.
The firefighter gives them slack and they move back into the starting position.
CANDYCE: I love you, Nico.
NICO: I love you, too.
CANDYCE: I love you, I love you, I love you. I love you so much. Forever and always. Remember that.
NICO: I don’t need to remember shit, because you’re going to keep telling me for a long, long time. Now, take a deep breath.
Candyce sniffles, blinks tears out of her eyes, and takes a deep breath.
FIREFIGHTER: One, two, three.
They gun it forward. Reaching the edge, Nico gives Candyce a hard shove as she leaps.
The firefighter pulls. Candyce soars toward him.
She lands on the far edge. The floor crumbles beneath her. She falls.
NICO: CANDYCE!
The firefighter reaches for her as the floor disappears at his toes. He’s pulled forward. His foot goes out, nothing to step on—
June drops the flashlight and grabs the firefighter as he plummets. He’s halfway over the edge, barely holding on to Candyce, while June is barely holding on to him.
INT. THE HALLWAY BELOW
Candyce dangles over the second pit beneath her, legs kicking.
INT. HOTEL HALLWAY
JUNE: Help!!
Nico rushes to the end of the hall, then dashes toward the pit.
Launches herself off the edge.
Dives over the other three.
Tucks and rolls onto the carpet behind them.
She wraps one arm around June, grabs a fistful of the firefighter’s coat with her other hand. Re-balanced, June is able to help her to pull the fireman up.
The fireman’s arms quiver as he hoists Candyce. Slowly, all four make it to solid ground.
NICO: Get away from the edge. Move, move, move.
They scuttle back as more of the floor falls away and swallows up the fallen flashlight. It follows them for a few feet as they scramble backward, then stops.
Nico takes the weeping Candyce in her arms and kisses her.
FIREFIGHTER: Let’s go.
INT. NICO AND CANDYCE’S ROOM
They move to the ladder. Candyce grits her teeth and groans through another pang.
Rainwater drools down the sill and onto the blackened floor.
FIREFIGHTER: Hold tight.
He climbs out the window.
EXT. HOTEL – NIGHT
Sheets of rain slap the firefighter as he eases himself onto the ladder. Slowly, he turns to face the others.
His foot slips.
He drops, catching the top rung.
The women jump.
The firefighter regains his footing and climbs back to the window. Candyce is at the front of the group.
FIREFIGHTER: Now, nice and slow.
INT. CANDYCE AND NICO’S ROOM
Candyce is shaking from head to foot. Both Nico and June have her by the arms as she starts reaches out to take the firefighter’s hand.
EXT. HOTEL – NIGHT
The firefighter takes Candyce’s hand. She raises one foot onto the sill. Leans out. Her rescuer supports her with his free hand.
She stops.
FIREFIGHTER: I’ve got you. Keep going.
But she can’t. Her chest expands and contracts with heavy breaths. She can’t move.
FIREFIGHTER: You’re doing great. Just breathe slowly. I’m right here.
She swallows hard. Behind her, Nico and June still have a hold on her.
NICO: We’ve got you, China doll.
Very, very slowly, Candyce begins to move again.
FIREFIGHTER: That-a-girl.
She crouches on the sill, turns so that she can step backward onto the ladder. A convulsive foot seeks out a rung.
June takes hold of the ladder while Nico continues to hold Candyce’s hand, leaning far out the window.
The firefighter holds Candyce as she eases onto the latter.
FIREFIGHTER: There we go.
Candyce still has Nico’s hand. Won’t let go.
NICO: I’m right behind you.
Candyce loosens her grip. Lets go.
Below, the rubble beneath the fire truck wheel crumbles. The weight of the vehicle shifts abruptly.
Candyce screams as she and the firefighter are jostled loose.
The firefighter plummets to his death, smacking the unyielding cement with a CRUNCH.
Candyce dangles from the side of the ladder, rain drenching her.
Nico scurries out the window. June grabs her legs as she dives onto the ladder.
Candyce’s arms quake. Her legs curl up toward her stomach and she screams from another contraction. Her fingers are slipping.
A SECOND FIREFIGHTER comes flying up the ladder.
Nico grabs a handful of Candyce’s shirt just as her fingers fail her. She dangles, arms flailing. Nico guides her back toward the ladder.
NICO: Grab the ladder!
Candyce’s hands find a rung. She pulls herself back to the ladder, securing her feet. She throws her arms around Nico, sobbing.
The second firefighter reaches them and puts an arm around Candyce.
SECOND FIREFIGHTER: It’s okay. I’ve got you.
NICO: Go, before something else happens!
CANDYCE: I can’t let go.
NICO: GET HER DOWN!
The firefighter tugs Candyce and she’s pulled away from Nico.
CANDYCE: Nico!!
Nico pushes against the rungs as June pulls her back up. Slowly, awkwardly, Nico turns herself so she’s standing right side up on the ladder.
Candyce and the firefighter make it onto the truck.
A BOLT OF LIGHTNING STRIKES THE TRANSFORMER on the nearby power pole. There’s an explosion of sparks. The pole falls again the wall of hotel as one of the cables rips free of the transformer and swings toward the ladder.
Nico flattens herself against the ladder as the cable swings past, spitting sparks.
Candyce rushes the ladder, but the firefighter keeps hold of her.
The cable comes swinging back. Nico leaps off the rung, holding the sides of the ladder as she slides down.
She hits the truck—leg CRACKING—and falls away from the ladder just as the cable connects with it and the metal BUZZES with electrification.
Nico crawls backward from the ladder, eyes wide. Candyce bear-hugs her from behind.
CANDYCE: Are you alright?
Nico flinches, gripping her leg.
NICO: I’m fine. (to the firefighter) Get her off the truck!
The firefighter helps guide Candyce to the ground. Nico crawls behind them. Another fighter helps her down.
Meanwhile, two more fighters have gotten the hose loose. The blast the power pole with high-pressure water. It slides against the hotel wall, dragging the cable with it, and crashes to the ground.
The second firefighter returns to the ladder and calls up to June.
SECOND FIREFIGHTER: I’ll be right up.
June’s bites her lip. Her fingers drum anxiously against the window sill. She’s thinking.
JUNE: Hold on!
June retreats from the window.
SECOND FIREFIGHTER: Come back!

This lesson again shows that if you plan out the horror emotions beforehand, it becomes easier to write the scenes since you have an emotional map you can follow.
INT. CORRIDOR – DAY
Keelan, Stan and Izumi hurry down an unfinished corridor, past exposed sheetrock and metal framing. A layer of smoke wafts at their feet. Keelan carries a fire extinguisher.
KEELAN
That architect said there was another stairwell on the other side of the building.Stan surveys the hallway.
STAN
How can you tell where we are? They come to an intersection, and Keelan stops.
KEELAN
I can’t. But it feels like it should be this way.He leads the others to the right.
KEELAN
Stay close together…I think we’re almost there. They make their way down a long hallway with several framed open doorways. The smoke is thicker.
About halfway down the corridor, FLAMES explode from one of the doorways, then another.
Izumi SCREAMS. Stan grabs her hand as Keelan moves in front of them both.
The flames swirl and combine as a humanoid form takes shape at the center of the maelstrom. A fiery face takes shape, its flaming visage contorting into a sinister grin.
KEELAN
Go back! The other way!Stan ushers Izumi back down the hallway. Keelan grabs the fire extinguisher hose and pulls the pin from the handle as the fire creature moves toward him.
KEELAN
Let’s see how you like this!He squeezes the extinguisher and white foam shoots from the nozzle, enveloping the creature.
KEELAN
Ha! Take that! The flaming figure is pushed back and begins to lose its form.
Keelan moves forward spreading the white spray over the fire. He seems to be getting the better of it, as the flames begin to shrink away.
But just when it feels like he might be able to squelch the flams, the white foam sputters, then ceases. The extinguisher is empty.
Stan and Izumi halt at the other end of the hallway.
STAN
Get out of there!Keelan shakes the extinguisher, trying to get some more out of it. But the fire flares up, and the flaming figure reforms and moves towards Keelan.
He squeezes the extinguisher’s lever repeatedly, then gives up, throwing it at the flames and turning to run.
But the creature is upon him, its fiery tendrils reaching out to grab his legs.
Keelan falls to the ground, and the flames pull him back down the hallway.
Stan lets go of Izumi and rushes down the hallway toward Keelan.
IZUMI
No!Stan grabs Keelan by the hands and pulls, but the flames are wrapped around his legs and pulling him in the other direction. Keelan bellows in pain as the flames engulf his lower half.
STAN
Hold on!Stan struggles to pull Keelan from the fire, but he loses his grip and goes tumbling backwards. Keelan slides down the hall in the fire’s clutches.
The flames engulf his body. He screams in agony.
Stan watches, but there’s nothing he can do. He retreats to where Izumi cowers against the wall.
The flames dance over Keelan’s body, burning off his clothes and searing his flesh. He writhes in pain.
Izumi SCREAMS. Stan holds her tightly.
Keelan rolls on the floor trying to extinguish the flames, but it’s no use, the fire runs over his body, incessantly burning him to a crisp.
Keelan’s blackened arm reaches for his waist. He pulls the pistol from its holster, raises it to his head, and pulls the trigger.
The GUN FIRES and blood splatters across the hallway as Keelan’s body goes limp on the floor.
Izumi SCREAMS again as Stan buries her head in his shoulder to avert her view.
The fiery creature kneels over the Keelan’s dead body, let’s out a sizzling shriek, and retreats back through the open doorways flanking the hall. The layer of smoke wafts away, and the hallway is quiet.
Izumi cries hysterically. Stan rubs his hand over her hair.
STAN
It’s okay. It’ll be okay.He glances back at Keelan’s charred body lying in a pool of blood.
STAN
Let’s get out of here. -
James’s level 3 horror emotion scene
I learned how to add the most extreme horror emotions to elevate a scene’s scariness.
EXT. WILDERNESS CLEARING – EVENING
Lonnie catches up with Celine and they are now circling each other. Celine finally gets a proper look at Lonnie: he is hideous – he looks like an in-bred child in the face, but with a man’s body, comically and hideously deformed. Celine’s face is one of utter repulsion.
Lonnie is badly shot up, with one arm useless, while Celine is bleeding from both breasts. Lonnie makes a big production of lifting up the hook with his one good arm and swings it in a very twisted, evil way – he is clearly enjoying this. Celine makes a similar production of lifting up her tweezers and pointing them towards him in a comically menacing fashion.
CELINE
Why are you doing this? Huh?Lonnie scoffs.
CELINE
Is it because you’re such an ugly fucker?
Lonnie grunts in anger and swings the hook, missing her by an inch.
CELINE
Is it ‘cos no one would screw you at high school?
She has hit a nerve and Lonnie lunges at her, but she is able to dodge the blow and stab him quickly on the side of the face with the tweezers.
CELINE
Or is it ‘cos your mommy wouldn’t screw you, is that it?
Lonnie gets really angry and lunges at her again, this time landing a blow and knocking her over. Celine panics and starts kicking out at him blindly.
CELINE
You in-bred failed motherfucker!
She manages to kick Lonnie hard on the knee and he goes down. They start to wrestle, and Lonnie’s ugly face gets close to Celine.
CELINE
Holy shit, your breath stinks. What have you been eating?
LONNIE
(with a twisted, ugly smile)
Your boyfriend.
Lonnie gets on top of Celine, straddling her, and draws back his hook to kill her, but Celine stabs him in the eye with her tweezers, leaving them impaled in his eyeball. Lonnie screams, drops the hook and slowly pulls out the tweezers, which pops his eyeball out. He looks at the eye for a second, puzzled, as Celine looks on, horrified. He pulls the eyeball off the tweezers and stuffs it back in his eye socket.
He turns back to Celine, who has been watching this in horror.
CELINE
What the fuck are you?
Brittany and Shania have just arrived in the clearing and rush, hobbling towards them, Shania helping the badly battered Brittany to walk.
BRITTANY
Celine!
Lonnie quickly turns towards them, and Celine takes her chance, punching him in the face. Lonnie simply takes the punches and then suddenly starts stabbing Celine ferociously in the chest with the tweezers. Horrified, Shania and Brittany try and reach Celine faster. Shania tries to take a shot.
SHANIA
I don’t want to hit her.
BRITTANY
Just take the shot.Shania takes a shot, but it whistles just over Lonnie’s head. He quickly turns towards the two women and slowly stands up, picking up his hook, holding it in his good hand, the tweezers in the other.
Shania takes another shot and hits him in the shoulder. He falls to the ground but slowly gets back up and comes towards them. Shania fires again, but the gun is out of bullets. As he approaches, she throws the gun in his face, but he keeps coming and knocks her to the ground.
Brittany is now on the floor, running out of options. Her snapped leg makes it almost impossible for her to fight, but she’s not giving up.
BRITTANY
Come on you bastard, I’ll bite your legs off. I’ll rip your black heart out with my teeth!
Lonnie stands over Brittany, enjoying the anticipation.
LONNIE
You’re gonna taste so good.
He raises his hook and is about to deliver the final blow when Brittany summons up all her will to survive and with her last strength kicks him in the balls with her one good leg.
Lonnie falls to the floor in agony. Brittany kneels on her good leg, grabs the hook with her good arm and is about to plunge it into him when a gunshot goes off. Brittany pauses and looks around her. Standing a few yards away are Lonnie’s siblings, Earl and Vickie, with the crazy feral kids in tow.
Earl walks towards Brittany, his rifle pointing at her.
EARL
Just leave him now, he won’t bother you no more.
BRITTANY
Yeah, right. That fucker’s killed four of us.
EARL
Look, we’re not bad people. We only eat carrion. We don’t murder people. Only, Lonnie likes to bend the rules a little when we get hungry. Take him away, Vickie. We won’t let him hurt you no more.
Vickie helps Lonnie up and leads him away, the kids following after them, kicking each other in the ass. Lonnie looks back, longingly, but Vickie clips him across the head and he turns away.
EARL
Come with me. I’ll show you how to get home.
Shania has got up off the floor and slowly helps Brittany to her feet. Both women are looking at Earl fearfully.
SHANIA
Why should we trust you?
EARL
My dear, if I wanted you dead, you’d already be on my dining room table. Follow me.
Earl walks down a different trail from the one taken by Lonnie and Vickie, and Shania and Brittany look at each other.
BRITTANY
What choice have we got?
Shania shrugs and nods and they follow him down the trail.

What I learned doing this assignment is my writing is so much better when I can build the fear, layer by layer until it reaches a climax.
