Sherri D. Coffee – Delivers Insights Through Conflict

What I learned doing this assignment is to brainstorm conflicts to reveal the insight and new way.

    1. Conflict- Power Struggle – Kathryn holds an advocacy meeting to align the group on passing legislation. At the meeting, she has 2 advocates fighting to lead the coalition, but they have competing interests.

New Way/Insight- Ability to negotiate and manage conflict.

After the meeting, Kathryn brings the two together and discusses the need to have only one leader. She revisits the goals and asks them to decide between themselves who is up for the task. The more vocal advocate bows out and cites time constraints as an excuse. Kathryn has her leader.

    2. Conflict – Stakes raised.

Kathryn meets with her boss and tells him of her progress. He confronts her. She is behind. Has she prepared the coalition to meet with committee members?

New Way/Insight – Keep advocates engaged and influence actions.

With the help of a PR firm, Kathryn produces materials and a timeline for meetings and advocacy.

    3. Conflict – Competition

Kathryn identifies the organization most opposed to the legislation.

New Way/Insight -Strategic thinking. How to neutralize the competition. She reaches out to the lobbyist and asks what they are opposed to in the legislation and is there a fix? Compromise.

    4. Conflict – Loss and dilemma

Kathryn fails to get the legislation on the committee agenda.

New way/Insight – Information is powerful. She researches all the committee members for interests, political votes, media, and funders. She discovers that the Chair of the committee is supported by a group opposed to the legislation.

    5. Conflict – Misunderstanding

Kathryn meets with the Chair of the committee to ask him to place the legislation on the agenda. He declines.

New way/Insight – When the chair refuses, Kathryn researches every committee member to identify funders. She reaches out to the largest funders and gains their support. She has them contact the Chair to change his mind.

    Brenda Delivers Insights Through Conflict

What I learned doing this assignment is I had more conflict built into my structure than I thought. This assignment opened my eyes to what conflict is, which is something I thought was always missing in my scripts. The conflicts were always there in my previous scripts, but I didn’t see them as conflicts so I didn’t emphasize or try to resolve them.

Five Different Ways to Deliver Insights Through the Conflict

    1. The Mother Character and her brother argue about whether to tell the Child the truth about her illness. The mother refuses and the conflict uncovers the secret that the mother is afraid that if the Child knew she was dying she would give up on living. The insight is you have to face the truth about death.

    2. The Mother Character and the Nurse are in competition for the Child’s affection. The conflict uncovers the truth that both women have a different view of how to face death. The Mother thinks a person needs to cherish every moment before death because death is not certain, while the Nurse feels that death is something to be prepared for as an eventuality. The insight is there is more than one way to face death.

    3. The Child and Mother are in conflict in the beginning of the story through the Child’s verbal abuse with her mother with her constant sarcastic comments. The conflict uncovers the issue that the Child thinks the mother is ashamed of her for being ill and doesn’t want to see her which explains the mother’s absence from her life. The insight is the mother needed to tell the truth to the child about her situation instead of trying to hide it all.

    4. The Mother is in a constant dilemma throughout the story about how to talk to her daughter about her illness. This conflict delivers the insight that death can be faced with truth and love.

    5. The Child gets into arguments with the other Children in the recreation room as a way to keep herself apart from other children. The conflict uncovers the emotional issue that the child doesn’t want to think she’s like other children in the hospital and that she’s not as sick as they are, and she has nothing to learn from them. The conflict delivers the insight that when we reach out to others we learn from their experiences.

Lisandro Boccacci’s Delivers Insights Through Conflict

what i learned doing this assignment is learning how to put meaning through conflict.

    1. American soldier raid them out of their own farmland. they lose a lot, because Silas’ parents had caught wind that the soldier where coming they started packing a wagon early on like their neighbors… what’s revealed to the family is the betrayal of the us government upon them (it’s such a violent and sudden thing to lose everything at once, it really puts Silas in a deep trans of sadness, hurt, and anger.)

    2. another conflict is when their friend steals the family’s food and water supply. Leaving the family with nothing to eat, nothing to drink except a few water droplets in an old leather water bag and a few bread Crums… also leaving Silas hungry and thirsty… in moments of desperation you really find out who are your true friends… but it leaves Silas in a very bad situation… and he has no one to blame because he allowed himself to get moody and stubborn and refused to eat and drink anything… putting himself at risk…of death by dehydration .

    3. Plan goes wrong when Silas spends the day asking the other travelers for water or food, and to his surprise no one would help him… everyone had developed a mentality of everyone was for themselves… and honestly just realizing,, the overall journey of the Tribe could be shifting from the belief that by keep to their own that they will survive and it’s not until later they figure out that they have to work together to survive the trail… but the sun beats down on Silas… luckily some clouds form but even with some shade… by the time Silas can think.. he is lost … and overtaken with fear. its hear that he Panics and runs and cries out for his parents… Hes losing hope. eventually gives up and falls, and everyone passes him. it’s not that by a Miricle that it rains just a bit. that a water puddle forms where Silas is laying and is able to drink water… (i want Silas to shift here to someone who believes in miracles.) and may be the first time he connects with a higher vibration. God

    4. Silas has a struggle with a wild boar he has to overcome, he has to kill it… he has no choice… and he does… and this is truly a moment of manhood for Silas…

    5. The moment when Silas approaches the ferry and the soldiers, overtaken by anger and revenger, he takes the bloody knife in his hand and is focused, he has the upper hand, he could suprise them and kill them… he killed a wild boar.. cant be that different… but its when seeing his mother helping the wounded soldiers.. it totally wrecked his heart and his hatred… he drops the knife and goes to his mother with the wild boar meet.. . the family united…

Laura Hyler’s Delivers Insights Through Conflict Assignment 13 4/19/22

What I learned doing this assignment is that I feel like my new way/insight sounds weak to me, but I am not sure if this is the case.

    1) The new way /insight I want to deliver is that interracial couples can last, providing that they find a means to cope with some of the difficulties that they may be faced with.

    2) The kind of conflicts that insight might show up in could be: a) how honest they are with each other, and themselves b) other people’s behavior and/or reactions to them c) conflicts with family members d) conflicts with friends e) conflicts with employers e) the things people do

    3) Ways that I might deliver the insight through the conflict-brainstorm: a) Disagreement with family (being left out of invitations) b) Conflict with friendships c) Conflict with strangers d) losing a promotion (conflict with employer)

    4) Five different ways that I can use conflict to express an insight:

    a) conversation with protagonist and family members-by refusing to be manipulated

    b) conversation with friends, both protagonists-asserting themselves, expressing their disappointment with their actions

    c) protagonist refusing to participate in functions when one person is left out (principles)

    d) argument between the protagonist and secondary protagonist (insight into the other character’s point of view)

    e) putting the antagonist in their place (not taking a passive/avoidant role, this is a direct change from the protagonist’s former approach)

    f) Protagonist not allowing employer to discriminate against her for a promotion because of who she chooses to date.

    Assignment 13

    Sherwen Moore

What I learned from this assignment is that conflicts can have many faces but under further scrutiny there are more than able resolutions that fit the situations.

New Way/Insight to be delivered: When freedom ain’t free, what’s next? Mark wants to be free to enforce the law on whoever breaks the law. Conflict: Difference of opinion. Delivery: Mark is alerted to a rape in progress. He arrest an alderman caught in the act. Tom says that he is a well-connected politician and they have to let him go. Mark vehemently disagrees and they go back forth about the law, arrests, caught in the act and the best one, ‘no one is above the law’. Then Tom says, “If you make this collar, you will never make code blue.” (…meaning his fellow officers will never trust him).

New Way/Insight to be delivered: Tables are turned on both sides: Al decides to help Mark clear his name and get rid of his new reputation as a corrupt cop. Conflict: Falsely accused. Delivery: Al confides in his older brother and tells him everything that happened on the 4th of July. His older brother argues with Al about getting involved after escaping. He says to Al, “Let white privilege set him free, not a black man.” Al disagrees because he knows Mark and he knows Mark is being accused of something he didn’t do.

New Way/Insight to be delivered: How do you keep a secret in a big city/small world? The press is advocating the freedom of information about what policeman was held hostage. Conflict: Dilemma. Delivery: The police department was trying to get their act together; what to say to the press. They felt they had two hostage rescue options before they went into the building. Go with Tom’s story; A) label Mark a corrupt cop and things went crazy. Or B) Rush the apartment and kill Mark with his gun and then kill Tyrone. They would tell the press Tyrone killed Mark before they could save him. The dilemma was what if things did not go well with either plan. There were too many ‘what ifs’ that created problems for CPD.

New Way/Insight to be delivered: How do you keep a secret in a big city/small world? The people in the neighborhood see the police arrest Tyrone hiding two doors down in the basement dwelling’s backdoor. Conflict: Stakes raised. Delivery: The press is advocating the freedom of information about who the police arrested in connection to the hostage crisis. Tyrone confessed that he held Mark hostage but was skimpy on details why he did it and the shots fired. He did say Mark was trying to kill him but shot his brother instead. He got instant ‘cred’ in the neighborhood and in the jail. Police knew something was missing but couldn’t afford to get the story wrong. Could they trust Tom’s story? Mark wasn’t talking and Tyrone’s story didn’t make sense. Was Tyrone really Mr. Wonderful? Nobody was fully cooperating.

New Way/Insight to be delivered: Teaching innovation techniques. Conflict: Plan goes wrong. Delivery: Al’s listening exercise goes awry. Students start ‘signifying’ talking about each other and about their mothers and grandmothers. Al intervenes as two students blame each other for the possible havoc.

    Leanne Delivers Insight Through Conflict

    1. Bess has butted heads with Constance Hopkins since the beginning of the voyage, and she tells her father about their confrontations. She questions whether their little congregation will get along with the ‘Strangers’ that have joined them on the Mayflower. Her father advises patience. Then Bess listens to the argument between William Brewster and Stephen Hopkins as they debate whether to stay together as a group once they reach the New World. She recognizes that despite their differences, both parties were willing to compromise to get along, and she decides she should try to do the same with Constance.

    2. Bess and John Howland argue about whether Bess should stay in Plymouth or return to England on the Mayflower. Bess says there is nothing for her in the New World now that her parents are dead. John echoes what her father asked her – “Don’t you believe God has a purpose for you here?” Hearing her father’s words from another man gives Bess pause, and she realizes that she may not know her purpose, but returning home would feel like a failure, and she wants to stay in the New World.

    3. When John Howland is asked to be the ‘scribe’ for the peace treaty between the Native Americans and the colonists, Constance Hopkins questions his qualifications for the job. Bess comes to his defense and the confrontation between the two young girls is intense. When Constance is convinced, she does an about face and begins to see John in a new light. Bess is jealous, and she realizes she has feelings for John.

    4. When Bess convinces Governor Bradford to teach her to shoot, Constance Hopkins joins the group. She doesn’t appreciate the seriousness of what they are doing, seeing it almost as a game they’re playing. Bess chastises her in the strongest way, and Bradford is impressed, recognizing that Bess is indeed strong and capable, despite her youth and gender.

    5. As the drought progresses, John Howland confronts Bess about her lack of faith. She argues that faith has gotten them nowhere – their crops are failing. John questions her understanding of faith, and Bess finally understands trusting God means submitting to His will, not demanding her own.
