Bob Rowen’s Act 3 Turning Point
What I learned doing this assignment is how to write the turning point for Act 3 as a 20% draft while also working to eliminate verboseness in my writing.
Outline Key Scene 4: Turning Point
INT. UNIVERSITY STUDENT UNION – AFTERNOON
BEGINNING: Virgil meets with JERRY HOTT, a deputy sheriff and University classmate, who shows Virgil a secret police document.
MIDDLE: Virgil reads the document several times and is devastated by its content. Hott retrieves the document from Virgil and sets it on fire in a metal wastebasket.
END: Virgil produces a simulation of it to show Forrest and one of his University professors who has committed to help him.
Write Key Scene 4, Act 3: TURNING POINT
INT. UNIVERITY STUDENT UNION – AFTERNOON
Virgil and Hott enter an empty study room and close the door.
INT. STUDY ROOM – CONTINUOUS
On the way in to the room, Hott picks up an empty metal wastepaper basket and sits down placing the basket in front of him. Virgil moves a chair in front of Hott and sits down.
VIRGIL
What’s this about?
Hott researches into his briefcase and pulls some sort of document.
HOTT
I have something you need to see. You can read it as many times as you like but I’ve got to have it back. I’m going way further than I should showing you this but I know it has to be fucking crap!
Hott hands the document to Virgil. As Virgil starts reading the document, a tremor appears in both hands and his face turns red.
VIRGIL
Is this some kind of joke? Where did you get this?
HOTT
As you probably know, I work graveyards in the Sheriff’s Office so I can attend classes during the day. That document came across my desk so I made a copy of it. No one knows I have a copy of that.
Virgil reads the document again.
VIRGIL
Chief Emahiser of the Eureka Police Department wrote this fucking thing and it looks like he used information provided by PGE and his own officers.
HOTT
And did you notice who received copies of it?
VIRGIL
Yeah, the FBI and PGE. It paints four of the plant’s seven nuclear control techs as subversives, and it focuses on Forrest Williams and especially me.
HOTT
I’m aware of your concerns at the nuclear plant and the Harris and K police brutality case. I knew this was something crazy so I wanted you to be aware of it.
Hott reaches for it and Virgil gives it to him. Hott takes a lighter out of his pocket and lites the document on fire and places it into the empty metal wastepaper basket. After Hott confirms the document has completely burned, he gets up to leave.
VIRGIL
Thank you for showing this to me. I understand the risk you’ve taken.
Virgil goes to a table, pulls out of his brief case a yellow tablet and starts writing on it.

Rob Springfield’s Act 3 Turning Point
What I learned doing this assignment is that speed over quality for the first draft allows for more creative freedom and more ways to explore writing the story.
ACT 3 Turning Point: The killers devise a slick way to flush Mark and his family out so they can seize them without making a scene. Mark continues to use the app changing identities like crazy as his dad reaches his payback amount. However, constant bickering between Mark and Jeff causes them to get their wires crossed and mistakenly expose their whereabouts. The killers capture the entire family and steal the money that Jeff has won. Now, he has to give in to their demands of embezzling money from an account at his job. John Stein and his crew of killers find a way to hack Mark’s phone, download the app, and delete it from his phone. Mark tries one last attempt to get the money and app back, but nothing seems to work. The killers hold all the cards, it’s lights out for them.
OUTLINE ACT 3 – TURNING POINT
INT. CASINO – NIGHT
BEGINNING: John and Manny create a crafty plan. They lure Mark and his family from their hiding place. They quickly nab and take them to a remote location.
MIDDLE: They force Jeff to siphon money out of an account by threatening to hurt Ann and Julie. John Stein breaks the phone app’s encryption, they hack and steal it, then delete it from Mark’s phone.
END: Mark tries one last attempt to retrieve the money and app, but fails. Nothing works. The killers hold “all the cards.” They plan to whack the entire family in a matter of seconds. Mark is out of options. It’s lights out.

Subject: Arial’s Act 3 – Key Scene 4 Outline
What I learned doing this assignment is…that I might end up having to do a lot of cutting in the final draft! This is turning into a long story. But it’s helping me rethink my approach, so I’m learning I’ll need to get tighter with the story.
Outline Key Scene 4 – Turning Point 3
BEGINNING: After Aylen seeks her revenge with Dylan, she discovers during their encounter that he was never a part of putting Aylen in prison. They reunite and make plans to leave the country together.
MIDDLE: The next morning, Dylan goes home to pack his things, but finds the royal guard waiting for him to take him into custody. Kylantha has found out Aylen’s not only alive, but the two of them have been together and she is going to put this to rest once and for all. She sends a message to Aylen to come to the palace if she wants to see Dylan alive again.
END: Aylen is devastated. They could have left the night before. He wouldn’t be in Kylantha’s dungeon if she had just walked away like Gwen had originally tried to get her to do.

Harley Grant’s Act 3 Turning Point
What I learned doing this assignment is that my protagonist’s low point is both a key part of her journey and another way to show the complexity of her character.
Beginning: Raj tells Brahm and Priyanka how happy and disappointed he is to see their father. Brahm tells Raj and Priyanka that Rohan killed their mother and nearly killed him. They were both left for dead. Brahm was forced to watch as his wife died in his arms. He passed out and awoke in a mob owned health facility.
Middle: Raj does not believe his father’s story. Brahm tells him to ask his partner. Raj sends a message to Rohan who arrives a few minutes later. Brahm confronts Rohan.
End: Rohan shoots and kills Brahm and Raj. He takes a sobbing Priyanka out to his car and drives away.
