Tolan S. Furusho’s Three Circle of Characters

What I learned from this assignment is: A Character’s backstory is instrumental in the character’s pursuit of their goals. The character’s actions in pursuing their goals is dictated by their experiences, prejudices and beliefs, whether grounded in reality or not.

Also, the dynamics between characters contracts and expands and is very animated. Characters should compliment each other but also have points of differences to make the relationship interesting.

    ASSIGNMENT 1: Supernatural

    A. Main Characters Circle:

    a. Sam – Younger brother trying to distance himself from his demon hunting family. Has the opportunity to attend law school but gets drawn back in to find his father who went missing on a demon hunt.

    b. Dean – Older brother. Takes on the family tradition of hunting demons. Returns for the assistance of Sam to find their missing father and solve why their mother was destroyed by demonic forces.

    B. Connected Circle:

    a. John. Father. Disappears while hunting demons. Dean and Sam search for him using clues left to them in their father’s journal.

    C. Environment Circle: Various law enforcement investigating strange murders and disappearances. Various ghosts and demons and the people that they affect.

    ASSIGNMENT 2: AKUA (GODS)

    A. Main Characters Circle:

    a. Noelani Kamakwiwa’ole – A mixed raced young woman with psychic abilities that she tries desperately to ignore. Feels responsible for the disappearance of her younger sister whom she knows was abducted by the spirits. Must accept her spiritual abilities and use them to find her sister and in doing so, she discovers a greater plot for the destruction of mankind.

    b. Adam Kane – A haole who washes ashore on Waikiki Beach with no memory and no identification except for dog tags with the name “Adam Kane”. Although he is an outsider, he possess an ability to understand the different languages and cultures of the island without being able to pinpoint why. He may be white, but his heart and soul is that of a Kama’aina (local born).

    B. Connected Circle:

    a. Ms. Hayashi – An elderly O-daisan (Japanese Spiritual Medium). Often at odds with NK but someone NK turns to for spiritual advice.

    b. Aunty Jane – An elderly lady who seems to be as old as the islands themselves. She chain smokes hand-rolled cigarettes and always seems to have a light, even though she never has matches or a lighter. It is rumored that she is Madam Pele. She lends timely assistance to both NK and AK as they navigate the Hawaiian legends.

    c. Kawika (David) Moniz, age 10. Son of the disappeared sister. NK watches after Kawika to protect him from the same forces that abducted his mother.

    d. Michael Moniz, father of Kawika and brother-in-law of NK. Currently in the psychiatric hospital for the murder of his wife, NK’s younger sister. Deemed insane when explaining the disappearance of the younger sister. He holds clues as to who or what took her.

    C. Environment Circle:

    a. Fellow HPD Officers who are uncomfortable with NK and find her strange and aloof. They give her cases that have a weird vibe to it and they all seem to be resolved with more earthly reasons when in fact, they all have a supernatural connection.

    b. Family Members – There are numerous “Aunties” and “Uncles” in the show, many of whom are not blood related but close family friends. They are a big O’hana (family) that love and support NK even though her desire is to distance herself from them.

    c. Various individuals affected by the supernatural; possessions.

What I learned doing this assignment is that I really had NO idea how big my cast was going/need to be and that it’s okay to let it evolve and grow as needed and to not put limitations on it.

Assignment #1: Tim Barley’s 3 Character Circles for “The Walking Dead”

    Assignment Part 1:

American Horror Story’s Three Circle of Characters

What I learned doing this assignment is…

Using three circles of characters helps categorize and develop character purpose, in relationship to their service for the show’s central character, and the show.

Main Characters Circle: Ben, Vivien, Violet, Constance

Connected Circle: Addy, Moira, Nate, Larry Havey, Leah, the evil “Old Hag”, Hayden? Real Estate Agent? R. Franklin?

Environment Circle: High School Students/teachers; Leah’s clique; those obsessed with the Murder House; ghosts of Murder House victims.

    Assignment Part 2:

    Stuart’s Three Circles of Characters

What I learned doing this assignment is…

This is a valuable framework to build the show’s cast. I also learned to see this as an evolving and developing cast, allowing me to throw possible characters/relationships in the mix, and let’s see how they test and serve the show’s main characters.

My Show’s Title: Poe Forevermore “The Horror of Hop-Frog”

This is a seasonal anthology like American Horror Story with each season a re-imagining of one of Poe’s works. The first season is based on his dark fairy tale “Hop-Frog.”

    My Working Concept:

Enslaved as the court jester, a kind-hearted dwarf transforms into merciless angel of death as he deviously exacts vengeance upon a tyrannical king and his ministers who usurped his land, massacred his family, and abuse his secret love.

    Three Circles of Characters

    A. Main Characters Circle:

Hop-Frog: dwarf, enslaved as the court fool, uses his wit and his skills creating lavish events with clockwork mechanicals to become the minister of death against King Goplik and his ministers who destroyed his homeland, and enslaved his secret love, Trippetta.

Trippetta: her dreams of living a romantic princess’s life married to Prince Brann of Lavinia are tragically destroyed by King Goplik of Brattvia; enslaved/abused by King Goplik, Trippetta needs to survive her servitude using intelligence and athleticism (especially her seductive dance skills).

King Goplik of Brattvia: terrorizes and rules with a passion for horrific practical jokes. He usurped Hop-Frog’s and Trippetta’s homeland, massacred families, and enslaved the two for his pleasure.

    B. Connected Circle:

Lord Asnar, leader of the Brattvian army and the king’s arm of destruction

Princess Syrelle, King Goplik’s niece, sees herself as legitimate heir to the throne, believes her father, the former king, still lives.

Queen of Brattvia, she seduced her brother-in-law, Goplik, and the two plotted the former king’s disappearance.

    The King’s Ministers:

    • The Prime Minister of Fear (the Castle’s Master of Ceremonies)
    • Minister of Hunger
    • Minister of Poverty
    • Minister of Idiocy
    • Minister of Disease

King Queeg of Balog, King Goplik’s and Brattvia’s neighbor and rival

King Queeg’s son, the prince who seeks Princess Syrelle’s hand (and control of Brattvia)

    The Queen Mother

King Raynor, the departed (murdered?) former King of Brattvia

    C. Environment Circle:

Servants of the King and his Ministers

Freaks and curiosities serving the Master of Ceremonies

    Subjects, Lords of Brattvia

    Trippetta’s family

Prince Brann, King and Queen of Lavinia

    Hop-Frog’s mother, family

Citizens, lords, knights of neighboring Balog

Raynor Loyalists, resistance believing King Raynor lives

    Were-creatures, victims of a plague

    Day 2 assignments

    Three Circles of Characters

What I learned from this assignment is that I need to consider the entire arc of the first season in order to clarify which characters are primary, secondary, and tertiary. In other words, think beyond the pilot to the different backstories and intertwining threads from episode to episode, and then build that into the first few episodes.

    Assignment 1: Handmaid’s tale

    A. Main Characters Circle: June/Offred, Mrs. And Mrs. Waterford, Nick, Offglen

    B. Connected Circle: Janine, Moira, Aunt Lydia, Rita

    C. Environment Circle: the other handmaids, the Eyes, the men of Gilead, the wives of these men

Assignment 2: Characters for my show Theodora

    1. Create the three circles of characters for your show.

    A. Main Characters Circle: Theodora, Antonina, Justinian,

    B. Connected Circle: Comito, Asima, Anastasia, Madame Helena, Narses, Procopius, Belisarius, Andronicus

    C. Environment Circle: other actresses, men of the Blues faction and Greens faction, members of the circus

    2. One sentence description of each character

Theodora: a determined, strong heroine, born to serve in the circus as an actress of the theatre/high prostitute, Theodora learns to navigate a number of complicated, and violent social worlds to eventually become one of the most powerful Empresses in Byzantine history

Antonina: Theodora’s best friend from her days training in the theatre who Theodora later uplifts into the palace after she becomes Empress; they have bursts of romance/love throughout Theodora’s adolescence up to her death

Justinian: of humble origins, he became Emperor through a series of unforeseen circumstances, and changed Roman law in order to marry the actress Theodora; throughout their reign together, he relies on her intelligence and sharp instincts to make all major legislative amendments in Constantinople

Comito: Theodora’s older sister who experienced the brunt of the sisters’ childhood trauma, and was the first to enter into the theatre

Asima: Theodora’s mother, resilient, and resourceful; however, after Theodora’s father dies, she makes a few bad choices with the men she consorts with that have deleterious consequences for her daughters

Anastasia/Stasia: Theodora’s younger sister, develops a mind of her own as she grows up, pursues a life in theatre despite Theodora’s wishes against it

Madame Helena: in charge of training the girls at the theatre, and overseeing transactions with men for more “private” forms of entertainment

Narses: The court eunuch, and most trusted friend to Theodora in the palace; he bears witness to all the palace intrigues, and records Theodora’s story before shes dies; is secretly in love with her

Procopius: the court historian who hates Theodora, and plots ways to smear her now both in the here and now, and in posterity

Belisarius: military commander under Emperor Justinian, ends up marrying Theodora’s best friend Antonina; has his own ambitions for power which Theodora becomes increasingly suspicious of

Andronicus: leader of the Blues who saved Theodora, her sisters, and mother from humiliation when she was little; tough masculine exterior hides his own traumas and wounds which are temporarily relieved when he is in Theodora’s company as she grows up

    Day 2 Assignment

What I learned doing this assignment is that I’d like to integrate the subsidiary characters in each season of my show as reincarnations of previous characters in other seasons, not just the main character. Assignment 1

What I learned doing this assignment is How all of the main characters appear to be introduced in the first episode.

    The Young Pope

Big PIcture Hooks – how does Lenny Belardo, a young Pope, and the first from America lead the church in a Vatican replete with old, Italian men. A pope who doesn’t believe in GOD??? Who is this man?

Amazing and Intriguing Character – This Pope is almost the antithesis of what we would think – He is not pious or repenting. He does not follow the rules or ways things are typically done. He doesn’t trust anyone except the woman who raised him (is she really his mother) Sr. Mary. He does not state his real feelings or wishes – i.e. “It was just a joke”

Empathy and Distress – His childhood was apparently terrible, but his love for Sr. Mary, a nun and woman, shows that he is grateful and appreciative to her. He’s an underdog, being so young and the first American so he has a battle to face, to modernize the Papacy (or was that a joke).

What questions are created that make we want to watch the entire season? Who is his mother? What secrets will Voiello uncover about him? What happened to him in his childhood? Will he address the Cardinals and the people and what will he say? What does he want to accomplish as Pope? What is his destiny?

Inviting obsession – Who is this guy, anyway? Why/how did he get elected? What does he really think?

    Assignment 2

(Laurie Brown’s) Three Circles of Characters

What I learned doing this assignment is that this really helped me to elevate the plot and concept.

Connected Circle; Bill Haley (Marge’s husband) Nancy (J’s BFF), Gen. Lange (J’s boss), Donna (Bette’s niece), Retired General Smith (J’s father), Norm and Jane (friends), Billy and Barb (friends)

Col. Joanne (Johnny) Smith is a patriotic and ambitious young woman who chooses the Army as her life, living in the shadow of her beloved father who with the help of his mother raised her, raises to the highest rank, Colonel, and through hard work and integrity becomes head of the Army Nurses Corp.

Lt. Bette Dayton, Johnny’s secret admirer and mash nurse, enlightens Johnny to her own sexuality and influences Johnny to risk everything to be in relationship with her, the the love of her life.

Major Marge Haley, an ambitious, deceptive military climber who is out to get Johnny who rejected her overtures and beat her out of her only chance to be Colonel, and will go to any length to bring Johnny down, including lies and blackmail.

Mark Haley, Major Haley’s eighteen year old secret son, whose very existence could get her kicked out of the military and holds that over her head.

    ASSIGNMENT 1:

    3. Answer the question, “What I learned doing this assignment is…?” and put it at the top of your work.

An emsemble show like Lost makes the circles harder to figure out, as they may be trickling out various characters for a while. Concentric circles is a good way to think of the characters.

Watch the next episode of your Example Show to see how the characters fit into these three circles:

    A. Main Characters Circle: Jack, Kate, Charlie

    B. Connected Circle: sayid, fat guy(Hurley), , Girl who expects to be rescued(Sharron), buff guy, old guy, boyfriend, Korean woman and husband, Pregnant Girl, black guy and son, man with shrapnel(U.S. Marshall)

    C. Environment Circle: other survivors, people from flashbacks who already died, the people who die in the background like the guy sucked into an engine.

Give us a quick list for each circle.
