Assignment #2
Wendy Weising’s Amazing Inciting Incident
What I learned doing this assignment is starting at the midpoint really helped me fill in the other blanks quickly.
1. What is the “Inciting Incident” of your series that this pilot needs to deliver powerfully?
Jane is trapped in a hospital where aliens are mining human brains for a serum they need for survival.
2. Give us the main beats of that Inciting Incident:
Intriguing Concept: Jane is
going to escape the hospital, save her kids, and conquer an alien nation.
Act 1: Jane is trying to be the
perfect wife and mother. She is hit by a car and wakes up in a hospital.
Midpoint: Jane sneaks into a
forbidden room and discovers doctors sawing patients skulls open and
extracting brain tissue.
Lock In: Polly and Ava tell Jane
that she isn’t in a hospital but in a facility where aliens are mining
human brains for a serum they need for survival. Dr. Jones tells her that
she’s never getting out alive. -
Subject line: Ben’s Amazing Inciting Incident
What I learned doing this assignment is
I used to think that Inciting Incident is the conflict that causes the character to go on the journey, but I’ve realized it’s actually made up of two things.
ASSIGNMENT

– Rain discovers her birth father abandoned her because she’s ugly to learn magic and bring pride to the family and must get into the Affinity Academy to learn magic and prove her birth father wrong.
2. Give us the main beats of that Inciting Incident:

Tim Barley’s Amazing Inciting Incident
What I learned from doing this assignment is I want to keep writing and rewriting my bible! But, this season actually helped me better understand that structure and ideas.
INCITING INCIDENT THAT NEEDS TO BE DELIVERED POWERFULLY:
Alex finds that he has fantastic ability but needs to learn to control it before he’s killed by those who want it.
MAIN BEATS:
Intriguing Concept: Alex, a unaccomplished “average guy” is the heir to the oldest power on earth.
Act 1: Alex is just your average office drone, good at his job in research, but doesn’t “try.” Things come naturally to him – sports, charisma, theory – yet he doesn’t seem to care about anything, happy to just be.
Midpoint: Alex doesn’t get the order he was looking for from a local coffee shop. Rather than complain, he just leaves. On his way home, he wishes it was different. As he tastes it, he is chased by dark men in a dark car (The No Things).
Lock in: Alex finds out that some of his friends have been hiding secrets. Big secrets that can help him understand changes he is experiencing. What they show him will change his outlook on the world forever.

(Laurie Brown’s) Amazing Inciting Incident
What I learned doing this assignment is again, how easy something can be after you’ve thought it through in advance – in this case, the framework to pitch bible process.
1. What is the “Inciting Incident” of your series that this pilot needs to deliver powerfully? The inciting incident is Geri Martin finding her mother in a pool of blood with her father’s colonel hat on the counter, taking the hat, and vowing to her mother to solve the crime.
2. Give us the main beats of that Inciting Incident:
Intriguing Concept: The journey of Geri Martin to become the first colonel of a U.S. Army that disallowed women.
Act 1: Geri Martin loses her treasured mother to a cause of death unknown.
Midpoint: She vows to be an Army colonel some day and solve the crime.
Lock In: Geri and her new best friends, steal her Dad’s colonel hat back
from his friend, the headmaster, at the military school he enrolled her in.

3. Answer the question, “What I learned doing this assignment is…?” and put it at the top of your work.
I was thinking of removing the quick scene that shows James Wong in his normal environment, but it’s actually needed. I also had to cram another two chapters into episode one to hit the lock in.
1. What is the “Inciting Incident” of your series that this pilot needs to deliver powerfully?
2. Give us the main beats of that Inciting Incident:
Intriguing Concept: A non-politician changes his name to None of the Above and runs for president.
Act 1: When Renquist steals James Wong’s company, James loses his girlfriend, his car, and can’t even get unemployment. He’s powerless. James decides to run for president as a power-up to take on Renquist.
Midpoint: James finds his apartment ransacked. Maria tells him about surveillance tapes. James and Maria rush to Maria’s apartment to find intruders looking for surveillance tapes. Maria attacks and chases them, but crooked cops controlled by Renquist arrest her.
Lock In: There are no useful escape clauses in the contract to get their company back. The power of the presidency is the only way. James and Maria change their name to None of the Above and More Jobs to match the Take Back America Movement’s endorsement. They have to get on the ballot across the country before that group realizes they’re a real campaign.

Avi’s PILOT AS INCITING INCIDENT
