Bob Rowen’s Act 4 Climax (20% Quality Draft)
What I learned doing this assignment is the need to eliminate my verboseness while writing scenes and secondly, how to strengthen my actual climax scene (currently have the “climax” in several draft scenes)
Outline Key Scene 3: Climax (The Ultimate Expression of The Conflict)
INT. GRAND JURY HEARING ROOM – MORNING
BEGINNING: Virgil is sworn in and seated.
MIDDLE: Grand jury foreperson explains purpose and procedure.
END: Grand jury foreperson explains why Virgil has been asked to testify and acknowledges the strain of doing so.
Write Key Scene 3 (Virgil faces the Grand Jury and confronts the trials and tribulations of being a whistleblower)
INT. GRAND JURY HEARING ROOM – MORNING
Virgil is sworn in and seated. The Grand Jury Foreperson makes an opening statement.
GRAND JURY FOREPERSON
Thank you for appearing before the grand jury this morning. It looks like we will have a lot of ground to cover based on what’s been shared with one of our grand jury members. In order to proceed in an expeditious manner, we have some questions for you this morning after which time we’ll decide how we’re going to proceed. These proceeding are done in secret and since you’re not a defendant, you are not allowed to share what transpires here. Do you have any questions?
VIRGIL
No ma’am.
GRAND JURY FOREPERSON
From what I understand, this may very well be stressful for you so please feel free to request a break when you need one. Are you ready to proceed?
VIRGIL
Yes ma’am.
GRAND JURY FOREPERSON
Are you currently employed at PGE’s Humboldt Bay Nuclear Power Plant?
VIRGIL
No ma’am. I was until I separated from the Company.
GRAND JURY FOREPERSON
How long did you work at the nuclear plant?
VIRGIL
For about six years.
GRAND JURY FOREPERSON
What was you job title when you left the Company?
VIRGIL
Nuclear Control Technician
GRAND JURY FOREPERSON
Did you encounter any safety issue at the nuclear plant?
VIRGIL
Yes ma’am. Practically everyday.
GRAND JURY FOREPERSON
Doesn’t the Atomic Energy Commission ensure the safe operation of the plant?
VIRGIL
I used to think so but I don’t anymore.
GRAND JURY FOREPERSON
Can you expand on that for us?
VIRGIL
Yes ma’am. I entered the nuclear work force believing the AEC was committed to radiation safety but I learned, and I learned it the hard way that AEC is more like the fox guarding the henhouse. I was denied access to AEC compliance inspectors when they were in the plant for routine inspections. Plant management always connected the Company loyalists with the inspectors. And there were never any surprise inspections to see the normal operating conditions of the plant. The AEC would call up the plant to announce inspectors were coming and we’d clear up numerous conditions that were citable violations.
GRAND JURY FOREPERSON
We’re going to get into all that after our lunch break.
VIRGIL
I apologize for starting to babble.
GRAND JURY FOREPERSON
No, no, that’s okay. We’re just going to have you list the safety problems this afternoon.
VIRGIL
May I say just one more thing before the lunch break?
GRAND JURY FOREPERSON
Certainly.
VIRGIL
You have no ideal how good it feels to get this stuff off my chest.

Rob Springfield’s Act 4 Climax
What I learned doing this assignment is that the previous obstacles of the protagonist draws them to the climax, in which they are forced to confront.
CLIMAX: John Stein and Manny’s crew make ready to put Mark and family inside some barrels alive, seal the lids closed, then bury them in the desert. They place each one of them inside a barrel. Mark knows it’s over. Everyone watches, even the big boss, John and Manny’s uncle. The lids are about to be sealed and…Jeff and Mark make a bet to the big uncle, putting him on the spot in front of everyone. The bet is that Mark can hit any target from any distance. No one believes Mark can do it. It catches the attention of some of the high rollers at the roadhouse who can’t resist. They bet big bucks on Mark. Mark draws back and…BINGO…he hits the target with ease. He wins the bet and saves the day!
KEY SCENE 3: CLIMAX – THE ULTIMATE EXPRESSION OF THE CONFLICT:
INT. ROADHOUSE CASINO – NIGHT
BEGINNING: John and Manny’s crew make ready to put Mark and family inside some barrels alive, then seal the lids closed, and bury them in the desert.
MIDDLE: Each one of them is put inside a barrel. The lids are about to be sealed and…Jeff proposes a bet about Mark’s arm. Mark plays along and lures the big boss into a bet that he can hit any target from any distance.
END: Mark draws back and…BINGO…he hits the target with ease. He wins the bet and saves the day!

Subject: Arial’s Act 4’s Key Scene 3: Climax – The Ultimate Expression of the Conflict
What I learned doing this assignment is…that clarity of what the ending will be might not come until this point!
BEGINNING: Kylantha (aka Key) has kidnapped Dylan. (He, of course, did not give in without one helluva fight, so he’s a bit beat up when Aylen sees him again.) Key is using him as bait to lure Aylen and make this her final act of putting her past behind her – kill both Dylan and Aylen.
MIDDLE: But Aylen isn’t giving up without a fight, either. And this time, she is more of a match for Key. The two sorceresses duel, and Key intends this to be to the death. Gwen has come with Aylen in hopes of helping Dylan escape while Aylen has Key distracted. Aylen doesn’t want to kill Key. Despite everything she’s been through, she’s not a killer. Key unabashedly is, and as soon as she sees Gwen trying to free Dylan, she attempts to kill the girl. Aylen defends Gwen, but Gwen is still wounded…badly. Aylen and Gwen are able to hide in safety from Key, but only for a few moments. However, that’s long enough for Aylen to examine Gwen’s wound and discover the birthmark on her abdomen. The same birthmark that was on Aylen’s baby who was taken from her arms moments after she gave birth to her in prison. Gwen shows Aylen the charm she’s had since birth, which is the same charm Aylen’s father gave to her…the same charm she gave her baby before she was taken away. Gwen is Aylen’s daughter!
END: And that is the tipping point for Aylen. Like a mother lioness defending her cub, Aylen rises to challenge Kylantha in a final fight to the death as Key won’t give up until Aylen is dead or until Aylen kills her, which she does.

Harley Grant’s Act 4 – Climax
What I learned doing this assignment is that I don’t need my climax to be perfect right now, but it does check all the boxes.
Key Scene 3: Climax – The Ultimate Expression of The Conflict.
First Scene:
Beginning: The two guards take Priyanka to the laundry room to get cleaned up. She asks them if they could bring her a clean shirt. One of the guards takes off his work shirt and puts it on a table.
Middle: Priyanka asks the guards to take off her handcuffs and turn around while she changes. They agree. She takes off her shirt, changes into the new shirt, and takes out her gun.
End: Priyanka says that she is ready. The guards turn around and she is pointing her gun at them. Priyanka rips her t-shirt in half and shoves them in each of the guard’s mouths. She also handcuffs them to a pipe behind the washing machine.
Second Scene:
Beginning: Priyanka walks out of the laundry room and slowly makes her way towards the sounds of Rohan and Sia in the kitchen.
Middle: Rohan looks up and sees Priyanka holding a gun. He says, “What a pleasant surprise” and grabs Sia and holds a knife to her throat.
End: Rohan tells Priyanka to put the gun down. She she can’t win. As Priyanka goes to put the gun down, Sia winks at her. Priyanka hesitates for a second as Sia pokes Rohan in the eye. He puts her down, Sia runs to Priyanka, and she raises the gun back up and points it back at Rohan.
