Subject line: Kathy’s World and Characters!
“What I learned doing this assignment is perhaps I need to add another scene to put my heroine in danger.”
PASSPORT TO PERIL, a woman-in-jeopardy thriller
Logline: After a newly married woman discovers her husband`s other women, she must outwit him to save her house and her life.
1. Remind us of your CONCEPT and the Big M.I.S. of your story.
Big
Mystery: What is the main mystery of your story that will keep us
wondering throughout the story? Who is Ben and why did he marry Simone? Is
Simone his next victim who will lose her house and possibly her life?
Big
Intrigue: What is the covert, clandestine, underhanded part that
will live under the surface for most of the movie? Ben and Marcie are
partners in crime. He marries lonely single women who have expensive
houses, gets control of their houses, divorces them, then sells the
houses.
Big
Suspense: What is the main danger to your Hero that will continue
to escalate throughout the script? After Simone is injured, Beth (and the
audience) worry about her. Will she survive?2. Tell us the Intriguing World you have selected for this story.
Georgia, from the skyscrapers and beautiful homes of Atlanta to the marshes and salt life of St. Simons Island, a state that gives film tax credits to productions.
3. With your top 2 or 3 characters, tell us the role they play and then answer these three questions:
Simone: the wife
What is the mystery of this character? She’s in a predicament. She doesn’t know that Ben is a con man who wants her house and will do anything to get it.
What is the suspense of this character? She is in danger but is oblivious to it even after she is hit by a car driven by Marcie. She doesn’t realize her danger until she is punched by Ben in the third act.
What is the intrigue of this character? Simone is naïve and trusting, a perfect mark.
Ben: the husband
What is the mystery of this character? He’s a charming con man who picked Simone as a target because she was single and owned an expensive house.
What is the suspense of this character? He’s not in physical danger until the third act. He is in danger of Simone uncovering his plan.
What is the intrigue of this character? Ben and Marcie are partners in crime. He marries lonely single women who own expensive houses, gets control of their houses, divorces them, then sells the houses.
Marcie: his lover
What is the mystery of this character? She partnered up with Ben as a way to make money. She owns a sailboat where the third act takes place.
What is the suspense of this character? She is only seen with Ben so Simone doesn’t know about her until the third act. Simone does see her drive a car from a distance. She’s not in physical danger until the third act.
What is the intrigue of this character? She partners with Ben who marries lonely single women who own expensive houses, gets control of their houses, divorces them, then sells the houses.

THE WHISTLEBLOWER’S CHARACTERS AND WORLD
Had to really rethink this one and I was really stumped…its late, but I think its more clear now. With all of the action going on we really haven’t addressed the whole global warming plot. So I started rethinking the plot and the villain. Essentially, since we wanted the professor to be the villain, Serena couldn’t, she is a pawn and it looks like she is the villain but she is a victim of the real villain the professor.
He is the villain that is hidden that pullingg the strings and calling the shots behind the scenes. Only one person knows he is alive, the chairman of the board who is also dispensable and who is a pawn for this higher conglomerate of unknown people who are scheming to destroy the global economy trough global warming.
This is what I came up with for Exercise 3…see what you think. Im going to open yours now and see what you came up with and lets get this in. As far as the movies, I will try to get links to you today or you may be able to google them on line.
*************ASSIGNMENT*********
1-The CONCEPT is a bright and promising international journalist who was once part of a prestigious fellowship program that was abruptly terminated, is now on the brink of breaking a climate change story that will consequences that will have deadly and irreversible consequences at the uppermost echelons of corporate and government establishments and their leaders. Her investigative story exposes a dark and deadly plot of how a clandestine group of multinational corporation and government organization leaders have set up a fraudulent environmental protection agency and elite Fellowship program with a prestigious board of directors and all the bells and whistles of a good will program , for some the brightest up and up and coming journalists across Africa and Europe.
The program , however, is a fraud and a front for a money laundering climate change scheme that will crash the world economy, create poverty and catastrophe among the people of the world and pilfer the natural oil and precious minerals in the Arctic region to create world dominance for a few. The missing professor is the key to the mystery and our journalist must expose this scheme and stop the invisible villains before it is too late.
2- The INTRIGUING WORLD world is the dark side of Boards of Directors of NonProfit government agencies where evil people operate under the guise of good in the face of the public, but who are predatory, dangerous, greedy people in powerful positions who use nonprofit funds for their own benefit and for the harm and detriment of everyone else.
3- THE CHARACTERS
*SHIKU is the hero of the story and the main journalist
A-The MYSTERY is who is she and how does she get intertwined in breaking this dangerous and explosive story of the ultimate corruption by business and government leaders using global warming to destroy the world?
B-The SUSPENSE is how she has become a target for murder and other harm by people she doesn’t know and that she can’t see.
C-The INTRIGUE is who are the people that are trying to kill her and how she manages to dodge attacks and attempts on her life …how she seems to mentally, physically and psychologically outwits them at every turn
*PROFESSOR AJOK DENG , the lecturer , is the villain who remains under the radar for most of the film but is manipulating people behind the scenes. Chess is his vice.
A-The MYSTERY of this character is that we thought he was dead and the world thought so too. but apparently he is alive and well. Why did he fake his death???
B-The INTRIGUE of this character is how he seems to always show up with such explosive information and why is there always an attempt on her life when he is around? What is his motive?
C-The SUSPENSE is will he be discovered for the fraud that he is before he executes the chain of events that will destroy climate, economy and humanity
*SERENA GORDON is the red herring. She is the best friend of Shiku and we see her plot and set up Shiku by reporting back to the head of the board and betraying the trust of her best friend and putting her life in danger, but she is not calling the shots.
A-The MYSTERY is why did Serena turn on Shiku?
B-The INTRIGUE is how Serena always seemingly 2 steps ahead of Shiku, how she is always so “super helpful” and such a “caring and loyal friend” and how she dodges the point/has an answer for everything whenever it seems that Shiku may be on to her. She always has information and a lot of it is information she shouldn’t have.
C-The SUSPENSE is will she kill Shiku if she gets too close
Supporting Character JACK, former love interest of Shiku when they were in the Fellowship program, and is now employed by the MI-5.
A-The MYSTERY is why does he get put on an assignment to find Shiku and bring her in
B-The INTRIGUE is how the details of the fraudulent professor come through the intelligence files of MI-5 and he automatically knows that he can get back his girlfriend and save her life in the process. He is the only one who can get through to her if he can win back her trust.
C- The SUSPENSE is will he get to Shiku to save her life or will he be killed?
4 – What I learned is that I really didn’t have the villains correct and that I needed to rethink the entire story again from the villains point of view. This mapping out strategy is really specific and by going back over the principals of it, the story started to be much clearer. We had not really incorporated exactly how the villain ties into the plot of global warming and the secret organization that is going to wreak havoc on the world.
Also, I got stumped a bit in terms of trying to figure out what their world was and got “idea block” but when I came back to it, albeit late, it is starting to make more sense. By changing the villain to the professor, we can stack all the circumstances against his character making him seem like he is the victim. However, he is the ultimate duplicitous villain who creates all the pawns in his game and we really have a huge reveal in the end. The best friend Serena, while she turns out to be a dangerous threat to Shiku, she is also being used and will be disposed of by the villain after she gets the information he needs.

Subject line: Stephen Maynard: World and Characters!
“What I learned doing this assignment is…?” Little by little things are coming into sharper focus.
1. Remind us of your CONCEPT and the Big M.I.S. of your story.

BIG INTRIGUE: Conrad is worming old women with a genetically engineered worm that makes them devour their husbands and become young and beautiful.
BIG SUSPENSE: We fear that Gina, our hero’s love, will get wormed and be made a slave to serve Conrad’s insatiable appetite for “love”.
2. Tell us the Intriguing World you have selected for this story.
The world is a coastal California College town where molecular biology professor, Babu, in his rDNA Lab, creates transgenic worms that can enter women’s bodies and morph ugly old hags into beautiful voluptuous young women.

C. The intrigue of this character? Jack is an upfront character trying to get to the bottom of the things happening around him.

B. The suspense of this character? Will he get discovered as the one behind the killing of professor Babu and the disappearances of the old people?

Jeff’s World and Character!
What I learned doing this assignment is: (1) Repetition and layering of M.I.S helps to solidify the story. (2) Developing a Red Herring or strong Neutral character adds to the thrill. (3) Clearly identifying each character’s M.I.S.—and adding subtleties to the script—thickens the thrill and clarifies the writing process. (4) I see it can be useful to add M.I.S. to secondary characters. (5) Adding M.I.S. in this script heightens the mystery of Neutral character Tom. (6) I can see that these assignments will help me to create a stronger hook of a logline and strengthen a pitch.
Concept: A 6-month-old’s trial-drug cancer treatment costs $200,000. Grandfather Steve lists his heirloom boat with a crooked boat dealer who steals the proceeds.
Working Title: Clearwater (A reader suggested “The Best Painkiller”, as anesthesiologist Steve is known as that. That title has broader appeal, but I feel it’s too obvious and dumbs things down. But maybe that’s a good thing? Another reader hated “Clearwater” as the name reminded her of Scientology, and “everyone in the biz knows that”… WTF? That’s really dumbed down!)
Big Mystery: How to pay for Jacob’s treatment.
Big Intrigue: Jack knows he stole money that will cost a baby’s life.
Big Suspense: Steve seeks the money and revenge, and is pulled into a world of scum, crime, and cops.
World: Steel City, based on Hamilton, Ontario. Steel mills and toxic landfill clog the waterfront. Stagnant. Contrast this with Steve’s aseptic job in a hospital and his new house in a new suburb.
Hero: Steve
Mystery: To what lengths and depths does he need to go to get his money?
Suspense: Will he get hurt or arrested?
Intrigue: He has access to lethal drugs and has the potential to be a killer of pains-in-the-ass!
Villain: Jack, boat dealer
Mystery: Why is he smuggling, ripping people off, and jeopardizing his “Clearwater Boat Service” business?
Suspense: Clear & straight talker, but evasive actions, even with his girlfriend. Why?
Intrigue: Personable and emotional, but reckless and enjoys gambling to extremes. Why?
Neutral: Tom, an Iroquois, Jacob’s biological father who abandoned him. He’s a driver for thugs.
Mystery: Introduced in a dimwit situation, but he isn’t. He’s seeking something, but what?
Suspense: Does he want to get Jacob back? What’s his motive? What will he do about it?
Intrigue: Why did he abandon Jacob and Jacob’s mother? Why is he with Iroquois thugs?
-
Yeah Jeff. I really like the Red Herring character idea. It freed me up to designate another hero which has really changed my story.
I will be really interested as to how you weave Tom into your story!

Jeff Guenther’s World and Characters!

Big Suspense: Will MC be coerced to commit sins and be either damned or used as a sacrifice to The Ones Who Must Not Be Named?
2. Tell us the Intriguing World you have selected for this story:
St. Rochus Hospital (“The Roachus Motel”), an institution built in 1890 that provides treatment and other services to the indigent and addicts, among others. Reputed to be haunted.
3. With your top 2 or 3 characters, tell us the role they play and then answer these three questions:
Sister Helga: A postulant nun assigned to work at the hospital to test her commitment.
A. her mystery? Why would someone like her become a nun?
B. her suspense? Will she continue to investigate? Will she give up her vocation?
C. her intrigue? Does she have a true vocation? What drives her to investigate?
Clara Sarke: A 13-year old possessed patient, the focus of the paranormal activity.
A. her mystery? Why is she possessed?
B. her suspense? Can she conquer her evil tendencies? What will become of her? Will her father get full custody?
C. her intrigue? What sort of entity possesses her? Can she overcome it?
Fr. Wilbur Dean: An exorcist, 49.
A. his mystery? What made him become an exorcist?
B. his suspense? Is he in danger? Will he be attacked or killed?

Michael, thanks for reading & commenting on my post.
Re logline, I don’t have a thrilling one either. That’s why I said “concept” rather than “logline”. I think many will come to you (and me) as we progress through this class.
I’m curious about your world… What border town do you have in mind?
-
I am not planning on choosing an actual town. I’m thinking New Mexico since Breaking Bad seemed to go over there quite well. I have not been to any border towns other than San Diego. Maybe I’ll have to make a road trip to AZ, NM, TX…
-
The human trafficking concept reminds me of the 1982 movie The Border, which I saw in the theatre back then. The most interesting scene was when Nicholson’s character dumps his barbeque into his own pool.
-
I hope I can come up with something more exciting than dumping a bbq into the pool -But its hard to beat Jack!

Hi,
what if Victoria was just dealing with either the kidnapping boyfriend or ex husband to simplify the plot?

Subject line: Wayne Schrengohst’s World and Characters!
What I learned: To just keep at it.
CONCEPT: A police department, consumed with corruption, implodes, when command says the new recruit must die.
Big Mystery: There is a cold case that has seemingly been the death of the many police who tried to solve it.
Big Intrigue: The Captain is running a corrupt department. All are on the take other than the two new ones, Sheila the newbie, and Walter who is about to retire.
Big Suspense: Sheila and Walter need to be corrupted or killed. They are now assigned the cold case.
Tell us the Intriguing World. A corrupt small town sheriff’s department in the pacific north west 1964.
Hero: Sheila, a new recruit, top of her class, book nerd, and quoted authority on police corruption. All she has is “book smarts” and zero respect.
— Mystery: Why is she delighted to be in a dangerous situation? Sheila scares the cops. She seems to know more about their town history, people, and cases than they do.
— Suspense: The police know she is headed for death.
— Intrigue: The Captain is assigning the “kiss of death” cold case to the newbie. It has never failed to get them killed.
Villain: Captain Benjamin. About to retire. Thinks he’s home free and clear. Wants to go out in style.
— Mystery: Why is he amassing money and killing cops.
— Suspense: He is also killing his favorites. Why?
— Intrigue: Will he let anybody live. Is there a plan? Does he just like what he’s doing?
-
Hey Wayne I have a corrupt Mayor and a wild cat sheriff in my story. I am looking forward to seeing how you show some respect for the law in your story! I kill them all in the end.
I spent some time in Eastern Washington in a small town where necks were two colors. Red and Redder. Ford pickup trucks: men drove F250’s, women F150’s. I was the hippie, Waylon Jennings “long-haired country boy” as I didn’t like getting haircuts so at times, my hair went almost 1/2 inch over my ears. They played both types of music: Country and Western. When the rodeo came to town, the glittered up rodeo riders would come down to the bar to boast about their success at lassooing steer. They had no idea the boys with the worn hats and holes in their boots had branded dozens during the day.
-
-
Any particular reason it’s 1964? The reason I ask is because I’ve been told it’s more expensive to produce a period piece, and so less likely to get produced.
-
It depends. There are tons of “mid-Century” furnishings available. I’m looking at a 1967 recliner and a 1955 piano as I type this. Props for that era can still be borrowed, rented, or found at junk shops. You can “write around” the era–minimize exterior shots, shoot only where present day vehicles can be excluded, minimize the use of props. Rural locations lend themselves to everyone wearing jeans, hats, boots, etc. that are present day, but look identical to 1964. Avoid extras or cast wearing current-manufacture athletic shoes. Avoid closeups involving make-do props or costumes or new watches (like Hrundi V. Bakshi). i strongly suspect the extra cost for a 1964 era boonies flick could be kept below $10,000, depending on vehicle requirements. It’s not that long ago.

Emmanuel Sullivan’s World and Characters!
What I learned doing this assignment is breaking down the main character’s MIS helps you see a basic outline from their point of view. It’s almost like a character logline for the hero and villain that is unique to them. Never thought of adding a red herring character, an interesting concept!
-
James’ World and Characters:
I learned how using the M.I.S. brings up so many questions to be answered and snowballs into not only Character level MIS but also how the interactions between these characters can fuel all of it and create a clear and worthy THRILLER MOVIE!
MOM, ONLY GOT ONE (tentative title): Crime-Thriller
Logline: When a Trans Male returns home after college to find out who killed his Mother, he must use his College major in Crime Forensics, which initially leads to a well-liked Billionaire buying up farms in the area but turns out to be more sinister- the betrayal by the people he grew up with as a female.
BIG MYSTERY: Who killed Tang’s Mother and why?
BIG INTRIGUE: Why the hell has the town tuned against Tang just for trying to find justice for his Mom, who had been one of them for generations! Later: Who is buying all the land and why are the locals not talking about it?
BIG SUSPENSE: Will Tang be killed for being a Trans Male or for uncovering the towns secrets about their farms? Is the Billionaire behind it all?
WORLD: The desperate family farmer who, first being taken over by industrial farming and big agro, and now Billionaires. World of the generational divide of the farm FAMILY UNIT to a new generation of “woke” kids who want to leave for the progressive city life (which is expensive).
HERO: TANG, Trans male
A. What is the mystery of this character?
How can he solve the mystery of the small town who won’t accept him?
B. What is the intrigue of this character?
He has to cope with townsfolk he grew up with as a “she” and also the long lost BFF he knew as a “she.” And a budding relationship with his long ago unrequited love.
C. What is the suspense of this character?
Just being Trans he is a target, but he is a forensics expert and will stop at nothing to find out the truth about her Mother’s death.
RED HERRING: TOWN SHEIRFF
A. What is the mystery of this character?
Did he kill Tang’s Mother? He is not looking for the killer. Yet he’s out-of-character by being one of the few who look after Tang’s well-being. [Doesn’t want secrets to get out, a few of his own personal ones. (He protects his son with the crimes he has committed)]
B. What is the intrigue of this character?
His Son is gay and Tang’s BFF and knows he hates the town and all it represents with a passion! AND he has many secrets he keeps close to the chest, specially about Tang’s Mothers death.
C. What is the suspense of this character?
He is the ultimate law enforcer of the area, carries a big stick and isn’t afraid to use it.
VILLAIN: BFF – Gay Guy
A. What is the mystery of this character?
Being Gay with Gay affectations is a great cover but he seems to know a lot about the Mayor’s death (which happened before the script starts).
B. What is the intrigue of this character?
He is progressive and caring to those close to him and he wants to change the world. RAINBOW PRIDE! (This makes him unsuspecting to Tang)
C. What is the suspense of this character?
He keeps Tang close but has very sketchy dealings with everyone else, with lots of secrets meeting with his same-age gang. (His entitlement and jealousy come out in quick, brutal force.)
COOL SUPPORTING CHARACTERS:
TANG has BETH, his unrequited Love – which may come to reality but she gets killed trying to help Tang find the truth.
SHIERFF has a Therapist to get out all his troubles – the Son, the buying up of dozens of farms and the recent local deaths.
BFF has a dumb set of Twins who do his dirty work.

Leona Heraty’s World and Characters!
What I learned doing this assignment is…by answering the Big MIS questions for each character by filling in the blanks, I’m able to understand my characters even more and make them more intriguing. Also, creating a unique “sub-world” for my story sets it apart from other thrillers and makes it even more thrilling!
TERROR ON THE TOTEM TRAIL
CONCEPT: While hiking on a remote mountain trail, a woman encounters a hysterical woman who asks for her help to evade a masked figure with a knife who begins stalking the two, but the hysterical woman may not be all she appears to be.
Big Mystery: Who is the masked figure and why is he chasing the hero and the other woman?
Big Intrigue: The other woman hired her neighbor to wear a cloak and mask and chase her and the hero around on the trails, to teach the hero a lesson for “stealing” her prospective new boyfriend at a Halloween party.
Big Suspense: Will the hero and the other woman outwit the masked figure and save their own lives? Will the hero outwit the other woman before the other woman kills her and the other woman’s neighbor?
WORLD: A lesser used, haunted area of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park with an abandoned old cave, a haunted gold mine, a haunted underground WWII War Room, haunted fire lookout towers, the lost Totem Trail and Perilous Peak.
HERO: McKenzie
Mystery: Who is the Masked Figure and why is he chasing her with a knife? Who can she trust in the end, the Masked Figure (Todd) or Tuvelle? Will she ever find the lost Totem Trail that leads to her goal, reaching the summit of Perilous Peak?
Intrigue: She is hiding her own secret, of her embarrassment for getting lost leading a group of kids 10 years before to find the lost Totem Trail, and her real reason for wanting to make it to Perilous Peak before the New Year.
Suspense: Will she be killed by the Masked Figure (Todd) or by Tuvelle?RED
HERRING: The Masked Figure
(Todd)
Mystery: Who is this person? Why is
he wearing a creepy mask, brandishing a knife and chasing Tuvelle and McKenzie?
Intrigue: Todd is the Masked Figure
who brandishes a knife and chases McKenzie and Tuvelle. Todd is Tuvelle’s
neighbor. She is paying him to chase her and McKenzie. His car has been towed and he needs the money to get it out of the pound.
Suspense: Will Tuvelle kill him in
the end? Does he die when Tuvelle pushes him off the cliff? Will McKenzie have the strength to pull him up from where he hangs on the side of the cliff?VILLAIN: Tuvelle
Mystery: Why is she hiking while she’s
sick with a cold? Can McKenzie trust her or does she have evil intentions? Is
she purposely steering them in the wrong direction, to an isolated area of the

Kimberly’s World and Characters!
What I learned: MIS characters layers in a thriller are essential to drive the MIS of the story
Logline: When a Navy SEAL who lives alone on a sailboat is taken hostage by a couple she rescues at sea, she must fight back to survive.
The Big M.I.S.:
· Big Mystery: What is the main mystery of your story that will keep us wondering throughout the story? – What happens when an anthropophobic person is trapped at sea with people willing to kill her?
· Big Intrigue: What is the covert, clandestine, underhanded plot that will live under the surface for most of the movie? – Rian cannot return to the mainland where he is a fugitive suspected of murdering 3 people.
· Big Suspense: What is the main danger to your Hero that will continue to escalate throughout the script? – Although she is trapped on a small sailboat with them, her moral code won’t allow her to kill this enemy outright. Plus she is injured and needs them to sail the boat if she is to ever reach land. Nobody trusts anyone but they need each other to survive.
Intriguing World – sailboat on open ocean
Protagonist – Lacia – Retired Navy Seal, severe PTSD
· Mystery: She copes with her PTSD in controlled environment. But what happens when circumstances are out of her control?
· Suspense: Can she overcome her inner demons to defeat her captors?
· Intrigue: She has been to hell and back to become a force of nature that affects everyone she encounters.
Antagonist – Rian – bartender / musician
· Mystery: He seems like a happy-go-lucky beach dude. But just how dangerous is his dark side?
· Suspense: Is he really harmless or a master manipulator and psychopath?
· Intrigue: His ability to read people and get what he wants.
Red Herring – Emma – accountant
· Mystery: Is she as dangerous as Rian?
· Suspense: She seems like the alpha with Rian but is she really in control? And how far is she willing to go?
· Intrigue: She always wanted more than life gave her. This is her first step outside her safe zone and the power is intoxicating.
-
A few weeks ago I read that for the first time a female sailor successfully completed the Navy SEAL course. 14 of 18 women have tried and quit. Three are still in the program. So when you say the SEAL is retired, do you mean she’s one of the 14 who quit?
-
My character served with distinction as a Seal and retired honorably after several tours of duty.

Melanie’s World and Characters
What I learned: Adding MIS to all of your elements not only engages the audience further but it also raises the overall stakes in the script.
Big Mystery: Who killed Vivienne’s daughter’s best friend and why?
Big Intrigue: While Vivienne’s mind is trying to piece together the events of the murder, the killer has figured out she was the 911 Operator who heard the crime on the phone. And thinks she has evidence pointing to him in as the killer…
Big Suspense: Will Vivienne be the next victim? Will she figure out who did it in time to save herself and her daughter?
World: The spiraling, frenetic and dark world of the 911 emergency call center – where every call is the worst day of someone’s life and where the answering operator must try to walk them through a life or death situation and shut out the gruesome reality outside.
Characters:
LEAD: Vivienne (911 Operator/Mother to Natalie):
A. Mystery: Did her daughter kill her best friend on the call that she took?
B. Suspense: She deals with PTSD from a previous case and has come back to work from taking a personal break. Her coping mechanisms, though, start to fail under the pressure of the last call and now impending case against her daughter since she was at the scene of the murder.
C. Intrigue: Will the killer target her next?
VILLAIN: Chief of Police/Father to Victim
Mystery: He’s a calculating, confident, strong cop with skeletons in the closet. How long will he be able to get away with the truth about stolen drug money?
Suspense: He’s killed before in the line of duty and his large countenance and commanding persona is not someone you want to make mad.
Intrigue: He has been secretly pocketing stolen drug money from crime scenes. He’s pissed off the bad guys and now they are coming for what is theirs.
RED HERRING: NATALIE (Daughter of Vivienne/Best Friend of Victim)
Mystery: Did she kill her best friend?
Suspense: She’s an angst filled teen full of secrets and anger. If she did kill her best friend, is her mom now in danger too?
Intrigue: Is she hiding something that happened at the murder scene? After a history of lying about other things, is she telling the truth?

Larry’s World and Characters!
What I learned doing this assignment is that there needs to be mystery, intrigue and suspense surrounding every key character. This will add depth to each one.
1. Tell us the Big M.I.S. of your story?
Big Mystery: What is the main mystery of your story that will keep us wondering throughout the story?
– a child is found sodomized and killed and the perpetrator could kill again; the question is: who did it and why
Big Intrigue: What is the covert, clandestine, underhanded plot that will live under the surface for most of the movie?
– the sexual assault is to satisfy a ring of pedophiles which will do anything to remain secretive
Big Suspense: What is the main danger to your Hero that will continue to escalate throughout the script?
– initially roadblocks are put in the detective’s way, but as he gets closer to the truth his life is threatened.
2. WORLD:
– 1960’s Chicago: a secret society of pedophiles, comprised of top city officials, target young boys to fuel their lust. Its “fixer” procures pictures and eliminates child victims.
HERO: Casmir Boroski, detective
Mystery: who killed a sexually molested boy, apparently done by a serial killer?
Intrigue: Why is Casmir, apparently inept because of his drinking issue, given a high-profile case to solve? Can the detective stop a killer before it happens again?
Suspense: What will the pedophile ring do to stop the detective to protect its fixer and preserve its secrets?
RED HERRING: Peter Smith, phys. ed. teacher
Mystery: Peter is arrested for the murder of a child, but is he truly guilty of the crime?
Intrigue: Peter professes innocence, claiming he was set up with false evidence. However he becomes jaded from the process and becomes uncooperative.
Suspense: Will Casmir be able to solve the crime and clear Peter?
VILLAIN: pedophile ring
Mystery: Who is the killer and can the detective stop him in time?
Intrigue: Who makes up the secret society and who is the killer among them?
Suspense: How far will the ring go to stop the detective?

Ola Höglund’s world and characters
What I learned doing this assignment is
that both psychiatrist Borowiak and detective Rostagno can be seen as the hero and each other’s red herring. Must Borowiak, in addition to killing the villain and save Rostagno’s life, also be the one who realize that the librarian is the serial killer before Rostagno realize that, to make Borowiak a true hero? Or can Rostagno get the credit for revealing the librarian to win his ex-wife back? I also learned that I have a hard time formulating the intrigue.
Concept:
A psychiatry researcher and a detective suspect each other of being “the element killer”, with both claiming to be subject to a setup, while trying to save their marriages in this university town of the desert where all the research money and psychopaths of power gather.
Mystery:
Who is the “element killer” and why are the victims killed?
Intrigue:
A convicted serial killer takes revenge by setting up Borowiak and Rostagno against each other after mapping and manipulating their lives, including their wives’ lives.
Suspense:
Will Borowiak be killed by Rostagno? Will Borowiak kill Rostagno? Will Borowiak and/or Rostagno be killed by the real murderer? Will their wives be killed?
Intriguing world:
Our new digitally monitored world that has become more psychopathic than the psychopaths controlling not only this “Silicon Valley moves to Palm Springs-university”, but the whole market.
Hero:
Psychiatrist BOROWIAK
Mystery:
Is he the killer or who is setting him up and why?
Intrigue:
While doing all he can to win the psychopathic game the killer plays, Borowiak finds out the truth not only about Rostagno, the killer and his wife’s past, but himself too. After scanning his own brain finding out that he has the brain of a psychopath, Borowiak fears losing his wife, fears becoming violent, fears being sloppy. At the end the meticulous truth seeker Borowiak has first lost his wife before telling her the truth about his behavior, then accidentally killed his wife, and even he can be sloppy mixing the brain scans so that Rostagno loses his career and wife.
Suspense:
Will he be killed by Rostagno? By the real killer? Can he win back his wife who is tired of his behavior?
Red Herring:
Detective ROSTAGNO
Mystery:
Is he right about suspecting Borowiak or is he the serial killer himself?
Intrigue:
He has found out the real reason why he got fired in NY, now wrongfully believing he has the brain of a psychopath. Therefore, he doesn’t trust Borowiak and he fears Borowiak will ruin his new detective career in the desert as well if his ex-wife who is also the police chief finds out about the brain scan. He is obsessed with Borowiak and that increases when too many things point in the direction of Borowiak as the element killer. He fears being a loser.
Suspense:
Will he solve the element murders and get his self-respect back? Will he get his ex-wife back?
Villain:
THE LIBRARIAN – Americas worst serial killer in 20 years with too dark nickname to say
Mystery:
What happened when he got caught in New York by Rostagno with the help of Borowiak’s profiling? What is his plan? Why does he kill in a completely different way now than he did before?
Intrigue:
He has undergone plastic surgery and waited for a long time to execute the perfect plan to let Borowiak and Rostagno destroy each other. The key to bring them on a collision course has been Borowiak’s wife who has a dark past with her father being killed on a Greenpeace mission. She has no idea that the headhunter who phoned her in NY and recruited her to this desert town is the same dumb man who works in the library. He taps their phones and homes, research and manipulates their lives. He will make it look like Borowiak and Rostagno has killed each other.
Suspense:
Will he succeed in his plan?
Hero’s supporting character:
Borowiak’s wife
Mystery:
Why did she change jobs and move from NY to this desert town? What happened when her father, the captain of a Greenpeace ship, died during a mission?
Intrigue:
It turns out that she 25 years ago killed the man who gave order to kill her father. She made it look like an accident, ironically by chance looking like “the accident” that happened to her father. And now the killer uses that background in his killings to frame Borowiak, making all the murders look like accidents or suicides committed by a “Greenpeace terrorist”. Even a complete non-psychopathic person like Borowiak’s wife can kill someone.
Suspense:
Will she be killed?
Red Herring’s supporting character:
Rostagno’s ex-wife, the new police chief of the university desert town
Mystery:
Why did she move from NY to this desert town? Why doesn’t she want FBI to help them solve the murders when Rostagno suggests that?
Intrigue:
She secretly knows about Rostagno’s brain scan showing him having the brain of a psychopath. Can she trust Rostagno now that she has given him a second chance as a detective? Is she prepared to take him back as a husband? She tests him to evaluate her feelings. Her biggest fear is that Rostagno is dangerous. She also fears losing her job in this town where psychopaths control her destiny giving her the chance to become police chief when she didn’t get that chance in NY.
Suspense:
Will she be killed?
-
Ola,
This sounds like the beginning of a great story. I like the brain scan idea and other elements.
Wish you the best in its development.
James
-
Thank you James! And I like your story. The brain scan is something that a neuroscientist did in real life, finding out that he had the brain of a psychopath. He thought that he had mixed the scans when he saw his own scan, but he didn’t mix any scans. So then I thought what would happen if he had actually mixed the scans…

I: The Doctor wants to get an AI into the white house to lead his own AI revolution.

S: Will she be turned off? Can she get Max to let go of his past?
Villain: Dr. S
M: How is he going to get AI in the white house?

David’s World and Characters with M.I.S. (Day 3)
What I learned from this assignment is to give myself as much freedom as possible to cook up a rich stew of mystery, intrigue and suspense in order to provide a satisfying thrill ride for me writing the story and for an audience watching it unfold.
1. My concept is a woman who’s an outsider of her fiance’s religious and business community and determined to discover how he died and how his death/disappearance may be related to his company’s shady business dealings.
Big Mystery: What really happened to Uri on his rock-climbing/business trip and what does it have to do with his company’s business dealings?
Big Intrigue: Uri, after killing a business rival had threatened to expose a fraudulent business scheme, has faked his own death and changed his identity to continue working for his company’s hidden subsidiary overseas and continue to manage illegal business deals.
Big Suspense: How long will Connie avoid suspicion and danger working within Uri’s old company to try to discover how his death is connected to the company’s business deals?
2. The intriguing world of this story is NewYork’s insular Israeli business community and the world of high finance that brings together investment firms (in this case commodities investment) with banks and US government subsidy programs that promote trade with strategic foreign allies. The culture of Mt. Carmel Commodities, where Uri worked, is one that promotes risk-taking by pretending the aim is for employees to fulfill their individual potential but in reality is a culture of subtle and less-subtle coercion that punishes employees who don’t put the company’s interests over their own.
Connie Alinari is the heroine. She has a background in finance, knows what to look for and shoots from the hip, unwilling to suffer fools easily.
A. Mystery of Connie: Can she trust her own instincts/judgment about Uri or will she start accepting others’ contradictory views of him? How will she keep her real objective in working for Mt. Carmel a secret so she can pursue the truth behind the company’s business deals and that’s connected to Uri’s death?
B. Intrigue of Connie: Why was such an independent and intuitive woman attracted to Uri in the first place, and why is her view/understanding of him at odds with those of others who knew him?
C. Suspense of Connie: How will she be able to stay above suspicion by colleagues at Mt. Carmel and how can she avoid getting hurt or killed by digging into the truth of Uri’s death and the company’s business deals?
Uri Kahnemann is the villain. He has manipulated Connie into believing he’s driven not by personal and professional ambition, but by adventure and curiosity about the world beyond his cultural bubble. He’s been forced to kill a business rival who discovered the Mt. Carmel fraud scheme he was involved with and threatened to expose it.
A. Mystery of Uri: Will he get away with what he’s done or will he be discovered? Why did he deceive Connie into believing he would marry her?
B. Intrigue of Uri: Why does he choose to appear in so many different guises to various people in his life? Does he do it to amuse himself, or does he see it as the easiest way to get what he wants from people and realize his own goals?
C. Suspense of Uri: How can he keep eluding exposure by Connie and others pursuing the truth behind Mt. Carme’s business?
Hersh Taubman is Uri’s long-time friend who works for a major bank that has lent Mt. Carmel money for its commodities trading deals. He is the only one of Uri’s friends or associates who Connie has met socially and the person who broke the news to her of Uri’s death in a rock-climbing accident. When Connie discovers he has business ties with Mt. Carmel, she worries that he may expose her.
Mystery of Hersh: Does he know what really happened to Uri during his trip and is he assisting Uri’s coverup?
Intrigue of Hersh: Are his deepening relationship with Connie and efforts to make her aware of who Uri really was designed to protect her and get her to give up her quest, or designed to win her over for himself?
Suspense of Hersh: Is he trying to help or hinder Connie’s investigation into what happened to Uri? Is he aware of the depths of Mt. Carmel’s illegal business dealings and biding his time to help expose them, or complicit in them for his own gain?

I’m in finance, so I’m naturally attracted to this. I watched the first episode of Ozark– so fake, but works for the unfamiliar. Curious about the religious component in this, and the timeline. Love the way you’ve laid this out– most is clear & easy to read. Best of luck.
