    Lori’s Transformational Journey

What I learned is to think of the beginning and end of the script as the old ways and the new ways.

    Logline:

A small-town pastor, the man that the town leans on the most, becomes the one it must hold up as he spirals downward until he allows peace and joy back into his life.

    Old ways:

A pastor who feels like it’s his responsibility to make Christmas memorable for everyone else is spiraling downward as he faces his first Christmas without his wife.

    New ways:

The pastor becomes receptive to help from his congregation and allows peace and joy back into his life.

    Lauren’s Transformational Journey

What I learned doing this assignment:

The process of how to write a transformational logline using the Old Ways, New Ways and the Transformational Journey. It’s okay to not have all the answers or even good answers at this point as this is a puzzle which still needs to be put together.

    1. Tell us your logline for the transformational journey.

An indoctrinated woman, raised by a trafficking organization, kidnaps children but when she discovers they’re being sold across the world, she sacrifices herself to free the children and destroy the organization.

    2. Tell us what you see as the Old Ways (The Problem State):

Problem State: With a ruthless, uncaring attitude, she works for the organization as a pied piper, gathering children to be used in sex trafficking rings.

Her Old Way of being can be described as:

Her Main Rule: Help the organization succeed as they are all she knows of family.
    Brainwashed
    Focused on her own survival
Believes she’s helping children have a better life other than living on the street
    Breaks the law, criminal
    Unemotional
    Heartless
Brutalized, starved by the organization to keep her in check

    3. Tell us what you see as the New Ways (The Solution State):

Solution State: She forgives herself for her crimes, sacrifices herself, saving the victims and destroys the organization.

Her New Way of being can be described as:

    Brokenhearted over her evil deeds
    Gains her freewill
Loves the trafficked children and will sacrifice herself to save them
Dies in the process of destroying the organization

    Dale’s Transformational Journey

What I learned doing this assignment:

A clearer delineation between the “old ways” and the “new ways” – why my character starts out believing something that seems reasonable to her at the time, and how life disabuses her of this belief and forces her to fight for herself.

LOGLINE: Antonia Maury, one of 19th century astronomer, Edward Pickering’s, “computers” who believes she can add to science, but doesn’t realize she must fight for it, must navigate the biased and sexist world of late 19th century America, to learn to stand up for her worth and accomplishments.

OLD WAYS: She was brought up in a home of equality where both the boy and the two girls were given equal educations. She then went to Vassar where she received three degrees with honors: in physics, astronomy, and philosophy. In these rarified family and educational environments, she is led to believe that she, as a woman, can accomplish as much in the world of science, as a man.

NEW WAYS: Antonia learns, soon enough, that in the world she enters after graduation, the equality she expected is far from easily obtained. Nor is recognition of the unique work that she does. She discovers not only that she must fight for proper recognition, but she must overcome her natural shyness and timidity to stand up for herself and her discoveries.

I would also like to add the “problem state” and “solution state” to this assignment, as follows:

    The problem state

-Antonia has been brought up in a privileged household where the girls and the boy were equally education

-Antonia has attended Vassar where she continued to receive a superior education

-All of this makes her naïve to the ways of the world

-She believes she will continued to be treated equally, even though a woman

-She believes that her actions stand by themselves, without her having to convince anyone of their value

-She is shy, reserved, and puts little care into her appearance, and doesn’t think these are disadvantages – she is, after all, first and foremost a scientist, above being female

-She feels intimidated by her astronomer boss, and wants to please him

    The solution state

-Antonia has learned to argue for her discoveries

-She has learned that the world does not equally accept women scientists and she must fight for recognition

-She has learned to see both the opportunities Pickering has provided, and the things he has withheld, and must go toe to toe with him

-In the reactions of her aunt, she realizes that issues are “femininity” are still ways in which she will be judged, and must stand up, as well, to her aunt who represents the old ways

-She learns to play the “long game,” exploring areas that she can when other doors are shut to her. Not getting discouraged by the challenges she’s faced

    4. Answer the question “What I learned doing this assignment is…?” (place at top of your work).

What I learned from this assignment is I have just scratched the surface of my screenplay education. Thank you Cheryl and Hal for doing what you do. I’m excited about where these classes will take me.
A distraught disheveled Einstein learns that life must go on after being grief stricken for 3 years. Inspired and filled with hope after reading a book, he says yes to meet a near homeless woman and a homeless young man. When love is given a chance the possibilities of something bigger and better happening for everyone skyrockets.
Old ways – Einstein doesn’t live life outside of his house anymore. He’s spends most of his time in his secret room.
New ways- Einstein comes back to the living to gives life everything he’s got.

    Amanda’s Transformational Journey

What I learned doing this assignment is the transformational journey is important. I had the beginning and the end already written but this assignment completely changed the ending and some of the storylines. I didn’t think the transformational journey is so important in comedy, but it will make the story so much better. I’ve been feeling a bit stuck but not anymore!

    1. Tell us your logline for the transformational journey.

A “good girl” has to redeem her lost engagement ring before the wedding, and while doing that, she becomes empowered and finds her voice.

    2. Tell us what you see as the Old Ways.

The lead character is a typical “good girl”, good education, getting married to a man who’s good on paper but boring. Her parents want her to marry him, so she’s been thinking she’s obliged to marry him.

    3. Tell us what you see as the New Ways.

She becomes empowered, finds her voice and decides she’s not letting anyone tell her what to do.

    Veialu’s Transformational Journey

What I learned doing this assignment is a great way to define my protagonist’s transformational journey which helps me focus on how she changes without getting bogged down with plot details – love it!

    1. A middle-aged woman must find the baby she adopted out as a teenager so she can start living her life authentically.

    2. Old Ways – She is passive-aggressive, needy, revels in other people’s misery, her relationships are superficial

    3. New Ways – She lets down her guard, is vulnerable, compassionate, builds healthier relationships, and begins the journey of self-love.

What I learned doing this assignment is to think hard about description, particularly of emotions.

    Logline

A career teacher’s involuntarily childless marriage ends after ten years when her husband finds out she had an exnuptial son adopted out at birth; a son whose parallel story of early fatherhood culminates with mother and son being blissfully reunited after nearly thirty years.

    The Old Ways

The social mores in 1956 dictate that a young pregnant girl will yield her child to adoption.

    desperation

    hiding

    secrecy

trying to find a way to keep her child

    learning to hide pain

    constant internal silence

    suffering with subsequent childlessness

    concentrating on her career

    The New Ways

    Adoption Act 1985 allows searching.

Love of own flesh and blood

    Joy in discovery of another

    accommodating breaking silence

    expanded lifestyle

    expanded extended family

    expanded outlook

[Profound] Day 3: Transformational Journeys that Change Lives

What I learned doing this assignment: I learned how the old ways are transformed at the end of the story. I just saw screenplays before as having a beginning, a middle, and an end.

    1. Tell us your logline for the transformational journey.

    2. Tell us what you see as the Old Ways.

    3. Tell us what you see as the New Ways.

    4. Answer the question “What I learned doing this assignment is…?” (place at top of your work).

    Logline for transformational journey:

A young woman’s identical twin sister drowns, but she believes her twin sister was murdered, and as she works at finding who murdered her, she discovers several dark, family secrets and is finally able to accept the truth of what actually happened.

    Old ways:

All that matters is my twin sister. I can’t live without her.

Living in a deep state of grief

Suspicious that family members, the hired farm hand, and the housekeeper killed her sister.

Fixated on her sister’s death and finding out the truth of how she died

Doesn’t trust the people in her family or the hired help

    New Ways:

Is able to look at the truth of how and why her sister drowned and accept this.

    Is closer to her father

Comprehension of the truth about overheard conversations and actions of her family members, Al, and Esme.

Is able to feel some compassion, which replaces some of the anger she feels about the dark family secrets she discovered.

    Karen Tolliver Transformational Journey

What I learned doing this assignment is a better writing structure. I did not know what my characters old ways were until I started this assignment. It taught me to sit down and discover what the issues of my character are.

Logline: A naive Accountant, discovers her cheating husband has embezzled the firms funds. She gathers her Girls Crew and bust him and the crooked FBI agent in the act. Clears her name and gets her life back.

    1. What you see as the Old Ways.

Naive, trusting the wrong men, not being loved by her father, allowing verbal and physical abuse in her life.

    2. What you see as the New Ways.

Found herself and has inner peace, learned how to trust her inner being, finds a new relationship.
