    Sunil Pappu’s Hero’s Mission Track

“What I learned doing this assignment is…to identify a clear mission and brainstorm steps to outline an impossible mission from the Hero’s perspective”

    A. What is it about this Hero that will have them go straight into the face of the overwhelming odds?

She has a reputation for being a Houdini in escaping from anywhere and entering highly fortified establishments like the Russian Nuclear missile silos and the Kremlin using her expert marksmanship. She is also a master in Krav Maga.

    B. What is the mission that would be an impossible goal?

One person against the entire Russian military and KGB agents. To neutralize a nuclear weapon launch in the war on Ukraine without starting an all-out war between Russia and the rest of the world

    C. What strong internal and external motivation could drive the hero?

Internal Motivation: to exact revenge on her former teacher for rape

External Motivation: The Russian military and KGB agents are going to hunt and kill her!

    D. Imagine that mission playing out across a story. What could naturally happen if this hero went on this mission against this villain?

Clear Mission: to get revenge by tracking down and killing the KGB commander and his agents to stop the launch of a nuclear weapon

    • Motivation: Kill her rapist and stop him from launching a nuclear weapon. Two birds with one stone.

    • Inciting Incident: She is activated by the CIA for a mission she thought would never be sanctioned until now.

    • First Action: She breaks out of a maximum-security prison in Siberia using her Houdini-like escapist skills and her marksmanship

    • Obstacle: The Russian military is hunting her down as she escapes into the forest to shake them off and get to the nuclear missile silo

    • Twist: She finds a hunter and uses his help to stock up on weapons and supplies

    • Escalation: KGB Agents take over the hunt led by the Commander

    • Overwhelming Odds: The military and KGB fortify the Missile Silo to make it impossible to enter without being detected while they scour the forest.

    • New Plan: She draws out the KGB agents, killing them one by one and finds an ingenious way to enter and scope the place before she is caught and arrested. The hunter’s hideout is found and taken out by the KGB Commander.

    • Full out Attack: She is tortured but finds a way to escape and in hand-to-hand combat with the KGB Commander, kills him. Barely alive, she puts her plan into action and completely destroys the missile silo.

    • Success: She covers her tracks and gets out to relay her status to her CIA handler. She hides out in the woods, rebuilding the hideout.

What I have learned doing this assignement is to clearly define and organize my story.

    Danielle LEGRAND Hero’s MissionTrack

    1.

    A. As the President has received a mortal injection and has just a few hours to get the antidote, he has to react very quickly.

    B. Besides he would have to deal with the situation all by himself otherwise his wife would be killed.

    C. Strong Internal motivation : He does not want to die and he also wants to keep the promise he has made to his daughter just before she passed away : to make the world a better place.

Strong external motivation : He has been elected thanks to his high morality and he still intends to be loyal to his country. He really wants to avoid a war.

    D. Naturally his behaviour would be suspiscious for his bodyguards and for his wife herself. He has to use his mental ressources.

    2.

    Clear Mission :

Motivation : He does not want to die after a poisonous injection and besides he has to prevent a war from breaking out.

Inciting incident : A false nurse has injected the President a poison instead of a vaccine. According to the message he was informed of, he must send one billion dollars to the Taiwanese Separtist Freedom Fighters and keep the situation secret or his wife would become a target.

First action : The President sends the money to the Taiwanese Account, manages to isolate himself and find a syringe in a medecine chest to make his blood secretly sent to a medical scientist and friend of him and have some tests done.

Obstacle : It is not easy to escape his bodyguards’ notice. The President has to change his physical appearance and to use some mental tricks to do so.

Besides, the clock is ticking and he feels more and more contaminated.

Escalation : The money the President has sent was originally intended for Chinese Industry Cooperation. China just can’t wait any longer to receive this important amount of money. The President becomes physically weaker but he uses his mental abilities to find the person(s) behind this situation.

Overwhelming Odds : The President has found who are the traitors among the people around him and he has realized they never intended to give him the antidote or to spare his wife’s life.

His firend who is a scientist finds it difficult to get the antidote.

New Plan : Warn by the scientist his wife is going to understand the President is in big trouble. She will help the scientist and get the antidote without attracting attention : After all she is the first Lady and she can’t be refused anything.

The President whose health is deterioring decides anyway to confront his enemy and make him tell about his real intentions.

    Full out Attack :

Absolutely satisfied and self-assured the Russian mole confesses that, according to his plan, a war between the U.S.A. and China will bring a very strategic monopole to his country. It means a lot of money for himself too. The Russian mole even laughs at the President and he punches and kicks him.

That is when the scientist and his wife burst in. While the scientist injects the antidote, the President’s wife – who is an ex. martial Art Champion- knocks the villain down before he is arrested by the secret sevices agents.

    Success :

The President and his wife are still alive. The President had managed to secretely re-transfer the money back without leaving any computing trace. The U.S.A and China live at Peace and conclude a business agreement about a rare metal.

    Alan Reyes’s Hero’s Mission Track

    A. What is it about this Hero that will have them go straight into the face of the overwhelming odds?

The Hero must clear his name of 10-year-old murder charges in order to survive this mission. He’s an extraordinary scientist, a professional problem solver.

    B. What is the mission that would be an impossible goal?

One man trying to evade capture by local investigator working in cooperation with the U.S. DoJ, all while taking on a Saudi Arabian oil company coming for his head.

    C. What strong internal and external motivation could drive the hero?

Internal motivation: The trauma of losing his research partner/lover 10 year ago has been resurrected. He’s been hiding in Southeast Asia ever since he was named as the main suspect for her murder. Now that he’s being forced to face this again, it’s time for him to find the real killer(s) and find closure.

External: A local Bangkok investigator has been tasked to arrest our hero for extradition to the U.S., and his old employer has sent a hitman to kill him.

    D. Imagine that mission playing out across a story. What could naturally happen if this hero went on this mission against this villain?

Our Hero is a fugitive facing charges for a murder he didn’t commit. To clear his name, he travels across several borders in search of the truth and the real killer. He’s being hunted by a local investator, and a corporate hitman. He must evade capture and death.

    2. Use the Mission Steps to outline the mission.

Clear Mission: To clear his name, the Hero must solve the murder he was framed for 10 years ago before a federal agent arrests him or a hitman kills him.

Motivation: Hero has been in hiding for 10 years, after being framed for the murder of his research partner. Once an extraordinary scientist with a bright future, the emotional trauma he suffered forced him into reclusion. He’d lost the will for scientific exploration and the search for answers.

Inciting Incident: When our Hero sees a newscast about his murder charges on a tv at a local Thai bar, he’s pulled back into the public eye. Forced to face old murder charges, our Hero’s obsession with seeking truth and justice in the name of science is awoken.
First Action: Hero contacts he man that helped him disappear 10 years ago. This is his longtime friend and colleague who was the head of personnel at the company 10 years ago.

Obstacle: The Hero is en route to meet with his friend, but he’s accosted by the local investigator who has been tracking him since he was first sighted a few days prior. Our hero MacGyver’s his way out of the jail cell and is on the run.

Escalation: To complicate the cat and mouse game between our hero and the investigator, the Company’s hitman enters the picture. Now, his freedom and his life are at stake. The company originally framed our Hero for murder 10 years ago, and they want to tie up this loose end once and for all.

Overwhelming Odds: Our Hero has found his way to one of the Company’s research facilities to gather information about the murder of his partner. The Company hitman has followed our hero and has him pinned in the building. Our hero has a physical struggle with the assassin, and the proof he has that connects the Company to the murder is destroyed. Miraculously, our hero uses his lab skills to subdue the assassin and get away.

New Plan: The scientist is at a loss, but he has the assassin’s cellphone. He uses it to contact and meet with the SVP who ordered his hit.

Full out Attack: Our Hero the scientist takes matters into his own hands, and arranges to meet the SVP. During the climatic sequence, the SVP admits to wrong-doing and….

Twist: Our Hero is wearing a wire and coordinated this meeting with the investigator to capture the real murderer.

Success: The investigator arrests the SVP of The Company. Our Hero is vindicated and free to go.

    Assignment 3: Jan’s Heroine’s Mission Track

I learned to go deeper into the story while asking myself over and over what must happen with odds and motivation until the end to keep the heroine on track with my initial idea of her journey.

    1. Ask the Mission Track questions to discover your Hero’s mission.
    A. What is it about this Hero that will have them go straight into the face of the overwhelming odds?

An ex UNRA (SWAT) officer with insatiable needs for justice. Expert with weapons, negations and IT

    B. What is the mission that would be an impossible goal?

To find the other two tattooed among 400.000 tourists on Malta this weekend before DARKs people will

    C. What strong internal and external motivation could drive the hero?

    Unite the three tattoos within 10 days and stay alive while DARKs hunting party is ordered to bring her to the surgery in Sofia where her tattoo will be peeled off her alive ;

    D. Imagine that mission playing out across a story. What could naturally happen if this hero went on this mission against this villain?

Searching to unite the tattoo, fighting DARKs security, escaping the hunt, becoming the huntress, finding the third tattoo and forcing DARK into the mystic ceremony of the three where the tattoo decides on whose skin it wants to unite.

    2. Use the Mission Steps to outline the mission.

    Clear Mission:

Kitty‘ s mission is to find the the other two pieces of the magic tattoo and save her own life, solve the riddle of the threefold tattoo and avoid that DARK gets hold of it same time

Motivation: stay alive by uniting the tattoo

    Inciting Incident:

An old artist tattooed three selected and drugged people with the last threefold magic tattoo that holds the world of good energy together before he gets killed. Kitty is one of the selected ones

    First Action:

Kitty returns to her hotel room, nothing is missing. She wants to visit the location wehere she was drugged and start her „own police work“. Briefly before the two guys who went to kidnap her, the lizards tattoo vibrates on her skin (bad energy around); she fights them off <div>

    Kitty: find the other two tourists;

    <div>

    Obstacle:

Maltas police officer LUSAR researches same time if Kitty killed the old mysterious tattoo artist

    Escalation:

DARK researches that Kitty is an ex UNRA police officer from Prague (CZ SWAT) and sends his Bulgarian security men to Malta to assist the local henchmen

    Overwhelming Odds:

Kitty meets with the local relocation agent who is to show her few potential future apartments when she is arrested in public by local police because she was the last to have seen the Tattoo artist alive. Leaving the police station her phone rings and DARK wants „something“ that belongs to him and KITTY doesn’t even know what he is talking about; but understands that lizard is vibrating like hell that the tattoo reacts to energy. She uses office equipment to research„magic tattoos“, finds the dead artist, he was the last of a magic knowledge.

    Twist:

DARKs people capture one of the other tattooed, the tattoo is peeled off him and transplanted on DARK.

    Twist 2:

DARK is a stakeholder of the company Kitty started working at, turns out to be an advantage as she can get to intel about him

    Apparent Defeat

Kitty beats up an army of security but is arrested again by Lusar

    New Plan:

Kitty writes an algorithm to sort the tourists on the island and find the third tattooed.

    Full out Attack:

She flies out to Sofia and fights through DARKs HQ, fights with him finally mano a mano and forces him to hold hands with her and the third dying tattooed one to allow the tattoo to make its own decision.

    Success:

with the tattoo deciding for Kitty, it is sucked out DARK who dies. Kitty now carries the complete tattoo instead getting rid of it. </div>

    Easy out:

Returning to Malta another algorithm of hers has practically „robbed“ the casino without the four white hats even realizing and she therefore has won the round as white hat as well.

I’m not sure if I have too much going on to pull it off…but here goes…

    • Clear Mission: CIA sniper Rachel Gilroy, and her partner, CIA rookie, Matt Edwards, are sent on a mission by CIA Director, Susan Green, to elicit intelligence information about an upcoming biological attack from the CIA’s Russian Informant, Serge Ivanov. The meeting takes place in Vienna, Austria which is still a hive of espionage activity with some new and bigger players: China.

    • Motivation: Rachel is a black and white thinker there are good guys and there are bad guys and she takes down the bad guys. But what happens when one of those bad guys is your own father, veteran CIA agent, Steven Gilroy, who left her for dead during a high stakes undercover operation 3 years before.

    • Inciting Incident: Their intelligence meeting goes wrong when Chinese agents turn up to kidnap Serge Ivanov and then Steven Gilroy appears to double cross Serge and send him to his death.

    • First Action: Rachel is protecting the Russian informant during their meeting when she is shot at by Chinese Agents. Her father, Steven Gilroy also turns up to disrupt the meeting.

    • Obstacle: Russian, Chinese, and corrupt CIA agents including quite possibly her own father are working against her. She follows Serge only to catch up with him as he’s dying. There’s a bigger plan at play he tells her and you must stop it.

    • Escalation: Rachel follows the scant clues left by Ivanov to find the second informant and still more clarity is needed on what the attack will look like and who is behind it and along the way killing several high profile Russian agents, including Natalia Volkova, Ivanov’s boss.

    • Overwhelming Odds: Rachel and the CIA don’t know what’s being planned and who is behind it. All they know is that it’s going to happen in the next 24 hours, there is a second informant they need to find, and Russian and Chinese agents are also looking for that second informant. Nick Chen, our villain, is one step ahead of them all including the mission team, as he draws her, her father, and her mother into his world.

    • New Plan: Rachel goes all in and against her better judgement tries to team up with her father, but he has plans of his own. .When a deadly virus is stolen from a local laboratory by one of Nick’s puppets, Mark, the CIA now know what they are dealing with.

    • Full out Attack: Rachel is able to track down the mission team and risks her life to stop them from carrying out their mission. Nick is also out for revenge against Rachel’s mother, Senator Audrey Meyers, who unbeknown to Rachel is also ex-CIA, and Steven Gilroy.

    • Success: Rachel is able to stop the attack, save her parent’s lives, while identifying those behind the CIA corruption.

    2. Use the Mission Steps to outline the mission.

    Clear Mission:

    Nick’s Hero Mission Track

What I learned: My story has many plot points to modulate the tension. I identified the principle ones for this exercise, trying to create a comprehensible linear mission track.

    A. What is it about this Hero that will have them go straight into the face of the overwhelming odds?

—The most important people in his life are in mortal jeopardy.

    B. What is the mission that would be an impossible goal?

—To eliminate all the skinheads and save his friends.

    C. What strong internal and external motivation could drive the hero?

—Internal: The love for his kidnapped wife and best friend.

—External: The skinheads are going to kill him.

    D. Imagine that mission playing out across a story. What could naturally happen if this hero went on this mission against this villain?

—In his many run-ins and close calls and twists, he could be killed.

    2. Use the Mission Steps to outline the mission.

Clear Mission: Juan: To escape entrapment with his wife and friends, which unfortunately involves killing their way out.

Motivation: Juan’s and Emilio’s wives have been captured and will be killed and eaten soon.<div>

Inciting Incident: The confrontation with Mankill and his gang at a country roadside cafe and gas station.

First Action: As Mankill mauls Juan’s wife, Gloria, with lustful gropings, Juan clobbers him in the face with his leg prosthesis.

Obstacle: Juan et al decide to pack up their camping gear and roll quietly away down the only lane out, which passes right in front of the farmhouse where the Skinheads are gathered to party, their Harleys blocking the lane.

Escalation: The wives have been kidnapped. Now Juan and his former military pal, Emilio, desperate to find them, get caught by the skinheads. Mankill smashes Juan’s prostheses.

<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Overwhelming Odds: Juan and Emilio escape through the Holler in their SUV, skinheads on motorcycles on their bumper.

Twist: They run out of gas and escape into the swamp, Emilio is recaptured.

New Plan: Juan makes scythe-like legs from an old spring tooth cultivator. They are now lethal weapons.</div>

    <div>
Full out Attack: Juan and Emilio save the girls and uniquely kill every skinhead that comes against them.</div>

    <div>
Success: They escape the Holler, Mankill hot on their trail on his Harley. Juan kills him after a wild battle of Bowie knives and weaponized legs.

What I feel I learned in this step is that I can work out major structural issues here before ever writing a line of dialog.

    A. What is it about this Hero that will have them go straight into the face of the overwhelming odds?

Janine has a dogged determine to tell truth. She has wanted to be a journalist since she was a child. She also sees people suffering and wants to help.

    B. What is the mission that would be an impossible goal?

Janine is behind enemy lines in a country where the military has seized power and cut off all outside communication.

    Janine Henderson’s Basic Mission Steps

Clear Mission: To alert the world about the massacre Mahenga Muslim people in the breakaway Republic of XXX (Eastern European Country) and stop the genocide

Motivation: Janine is on vacation with friends in XXX. She senses the political tension between the minority group and the rise of a far right militia.

Inciting Incident: A plane carrying the President and other top political leaders is shot down. Unrest followed by martial law is imposed.

First Action: Janine investigates the area where the missile that shot down thew President’s plane was launched.

Obstacle: Military begins sealing off areas. Outside communication (phone and Internet) is cut off.

Use the Mission Steps to outline the mission:

Clear mission: to stop evil and save lives. To thwart the terrorist attacks God is revealing to her.

Motivation: she missed God’s warning of the attack on the bridge and lives were lost. She won’t let it happen again. Internal: grieving the loss of her own child. External: the mama bear is rising up in her to do something to save others.

Inciting incident: the bridge collapse. She realizes that God was trying to warn her and she missed it!

First Action: tries to warn the FBI but backs off because of the fear of “what if I’m wrong?”

Obstacle: the enemy is bigger than she thought. These reveals from God are not just “accidents” but planned terrorist attacks.

Escalation: as the attacks fail, the terrorists think there is a mole in their ranks and are determined to root it out.

Overwhelming odds: when the terrorists pinpoint Rachel as the source, they go after her – at the same time as the FBI suspects her involvement and they also go after her.

New plan: Realizing she is wanted by both sides, Rachel devises a plan that will lead the FBI to the terrorists.

Apparent defeat: Rachel is captured, tied to a chair and the FBI have no leads except to know a major attack is planned – and she’s the only one that knows what it is.

Twist: Evan realizes what Rachel has done in allowing herself to be taken.

Apparent success: the FBI figure out Rachel’s notes and work to disarm the multiple bombs planted across the city’s hospitals.

Full out attack: the FBI home in on the terrorists, killing them and saving Rachel.

Twist: Rachel realizes they missed a bomb!

Escalation: they rush to the hospital with seconds to disarm the bomb.

Success: the bomb is disarmed and the day is saved.

Denouement: the terrorists disown their men in the field; the main guy in the White House commits suicide.

Resolve and hook: in a church service, the baby of their friend whose life was saved through Rachel’s intervention is held up before God… this child is yours. The promise of a new adventure…

Dan Hart What I learned. I’m behind

    Lesson 3 BASIC MISSION STEPS

Clear Mission: Nick must get his father back from the past and send these time travelers/ geniuses back to their correct time and place. All while defeating the aliens and preventing them from going back to their time and place

Motivation: Nick wants to save the earth and find his dad.

Inciting Incident: three nude disoriented men are in the junkyard when Nick returns from the initial football game accompanied by ChadFirst Action: Nick’s figures out who the Time travel/geniuses are : Archimedes, Leonardo and Black Beard. The Googal machine is in pieces. It exploded in the junkyard during this last time it was used. Archimedes remembers seeing Nick’s father in his time. 200 AD.

Obstacle: Why were these three chosen by the time machine? What do they have in common? How can they put this machine back together?

Escalation: Nick figures out that his so-called friend Chad is an alien villain in a human body who were picked up by the time machine several years ago in a giant lightning storm. Maybe Nick was not there and his father dealt with them.

Overwhelming Odds: The aliens control the football team and the cheerleaders plus several teachers who seem nastier than the kids. The alien’s superpower is that they can communicate telepathically without speaking

New Plan: Nick and the time traveler/geniuses must put the Googal machine back together to make it work They discover a fourth time traveler/ genius, Benjamin Franklin , who was sent at the same time. Ben decided to check out this future and have a good time.

Full out Attack: The aliens have figured out what is going on. They are not nearly as clever as Nick and his friends. Success: as they get the machine to work they will experience small time travel. This allows them to have a theory on how to calibrate the machine to send people back to the desired tome. Bad alien teachers are sent back to prehistoric time with dinosaurs. Alien students don’t really want to go back to the future. They’d prefer to be sent to a time and place on Earth where their telepathic powers can make them successful at that place and time on Earth. ( of course, now we have a problem that the students might screw up history with their activities in the past)

NOTE: where does Nick‘s father come in and how do we get him back?)

    Wendy’s Hero’s Mission Track

What I learned doing this assignment is Hero outline is easy with these steps

    1 Mission Track Questions

    A) What is it about this Hero that will have them go straight into the face of overwhelming odds? Pure vengeance, she is dead already and ha nothing to loose.

    B) What is the mission that would be an impossible goal? To get through not just theOR team of trained military personnel, but also the MP that comes to protect the OR personnel.

    C) What strong internal and external motivation could drive the Hero? 1) Internal: She was just murdered by her husband 2) External: Everyone is trying to kill her to save the Surgeon.

    D) Imagine that mission playing out across a story. What could naturally happen if this Hero went on this mission against this villain? The Hero comes back to life, fights the OR crew in the room, the villain escapes, then the Hero must fight the MP’s and the rest of the OR personnel that are military trained, she exposes the villain as the killer, the OR is out to get him, she finds him and kills him, then she must find her way to the other side.
