Gerry Cousins – Character Profile Part 2

    1. Until doing this assignment, I never truly realized how many conflicting attributes we all have. None of us is a simple surface character and that the more I search, the more I’ll find, which complicates every person under the sun both in life and in dramatic writing. Excellent lesson.

    2. JENNA – *Traits -Intelligent, creative, ambitious, vulnerable, responsible, risk

    taker.

*Subtext – Hides her fear of failing. Sublimates her feelings for SID

and denies what’s going on with her husband.

*Flaw – Her wanting to please and constantly do the right thing

*Values – To be the best she can be and true to herself.

*Irony – She is as afraid of failure as SID but pushes forward. Fearful

that the outcome (choice she’s made) for lead character, MOLLLY, is

the same one she will be stuck with.

*Audience drawn to JENNA because of her initiative in getting the ball

    rolling.

SID – *Traits – Charming, vane, physically fit, aging and disappointed

womanizer, a crowing cock at the top of his roost, afraid of falling off.

*Subtext – He likes running the show.

*Flaw – Fear of being seen as a loser.

    *Values – Money, power, success.

*Irony –Embraces the play even though he was distinctly against it.

Falls for MOLLY, the character they created, which takes him to

    JENNA..

*Audience is drawn to SID because of his self-styled charm and

    vulnerability.

MOLLY – *Traits – Proud, open-hearted, honest and trusting, vulnerable and

reactive, smart but looking for easy answers to life’s challenges, sexy,

    aware, bold.

*Subtext – Want me! Need me! Like me. Don’t let me fail..

*Flaw –Guiltlessness (It’s not my fault.)

    *Values – Relationships, honesty.

*Irony – Her need to be free and belong at the same time.

*Audience most drawn to MOLLY because of her impetuousness,

    bravado and vincibility.

Tammila Wright- Character Profile Part 2

What I learned from doing this exercise is how to flesh out my leading characters by looking at their traits and ironic personalities can lead to plot points that I feel will be entertaining to an audience.

    My leading characters:

    Jack Higgins

    WHAT DRAWS US TO THIS
    CHARACTER?

Jack loves to play pranks on people. Sometimes he takes things too far and people get hurt. He views people as ignorant and sees nothing wrong with bullying someone. In fact, he feels compelled to harass people because he thinks he is helping in some sadistic way. The audience should feel angry at how callus Jack can be without remorse. Hopefully, they will be engaged to finally see how Jack gets his “come-up-ins”. Actions like this can’t be allowed to continue.

TRAITS: Jack’s occupation is blacksmithing and he carries a “cloud” of soot from his shop with him wherever he goes. His clothes are covered in soot and he could care less that he shares the soot on everything and everyone he touches. He considers it his autograph.

SUBTEXT: Belching, blowing his nose into the dirt at his feet, slapping his hand on the backs of people around them to say “hi”, leaving a giant black print, and laughing about it. If someone has a beer belly, he’ll smack them enacting playing the drums. He lacks any respect for personal space.

FLAW: He lacks any respect for people’s personal space and his own personal hygiene which makes people shun him, and even run from him. How will he ever overcome his loneliness when socially, he’s obnoxious?

VALUES: He values privacy on his land. No trespassing. He believes if someone ever got the idea to visit him, they would steal from him.

IRONY: Jack adores the woodland creatures that visit his property. He shares the very best apples from his prized apple tree and the best vegetables from his garden. But for the people of the village, he doesn’t care if they starve.

    WHAT MAKES THIS THE RIGHT
    CHARACTER FOR THIS ROLE?

The Celts at the time were celebrating Samhain which meant the time of harvest had ended. They shared their bounty with each other to make sure everyone had enough to eat for the coming winter. For a person to be as stingy as Jack, was unheard of. This will be a cautionary tale of what happens when you don’t help people.

    Cian Byrne

    WHAT DRAWS US TO THIS
    CHARACTER?

The audience will want someone, anyone to stop Jack and teach him a lesson. Cian shows up as a hopeful hero to remedy the villager’s problem.

TRAITS: Cian is a big guy. Because of his size, he never has been in a fight. He doesn’t know how. He is so big that people are scared of him. When he sits down, people move away. He’s a teddy bear. He feels that talking is a better way to resolve conflict than fighting.

SUBTEXT: He has a habit of adding, “….maybe I could do that but naw” implying he doesn’t want to do that, if fact, he might be scared to try. Ex: Villager: Cian, I need help loading wood.” Cian, “Today?” Villager: “Tomorrow.” Cian: “Load wood? Maybe I could do that……but naw. Too hard.”

FLAW: Because of Cian’s size, he could easily help people but he’s lazy. No motivation.

VALUES: Cian values peace and quiet. No conflict.

IRONY: He loves peace and doesn’t believe in fighting with achieving a path to peace.

    WHAT MAKES THIS THE RIGHT
    CHARACTER FOR THIS ROLE?

Cian is physically strong enough to take on Jack but he doesn’t know how to fight, creating an obstacle he must overcome if he wants to help the village.

    3. Merging the two profiles, I can see how my two leading characters are going to be in natural opposition. Jack is a fighter, Cian is not. Jack doesn’t care for people, Cian loves people even though they are usually scared of him. Jack loves to rebel rouse, and Cian adores peace and quiet.

Carol Dougherty’s Character Profile Part 2

What I learned doing this assignment: This showed me that Pen and Katie are very different in some ways, and they also have more in common than is evident on the surface. Looking at things like their subtext and the irony gives me a stronger sense of the layers of these characters and how they might to respond to each other’s attempts to hide the truth.

    Pen:

    · What draws us to this character? Pen’s vulnerability and longing for love are evident from the first scene. Unable to accept or trust even affection from anyone other than Terry, she is isolated in the middle of an entire company of co-workers.

    · Traits: fiercely loyal, intense work ethic, sensitive to the world around her (people, animals, her garden)

    · Subtext: Pen hides her emotions and vulnerability with coolness, sarcasm, and a sophisticated veneer.

    · Flaw: Pen uses manipulation to control her relationships and interactions with others to protect herself, thus keeping others at arm’s length.

    · Values: integrity, loyalty, tenderness, love

    · Irony: As much as Pen values love and tenderness, she works hard to remain invulnerable to them.

    · Right for the role: Pen knows what she’s missing in terms of love and tenderness from her experience with Danni, so she knows its value. She is a powerful actress with discipline and integrity in every role and she wants to give her best in every performance.

    Katie:

    · What draws us to this character? Katie’s ardent spirit and her warmth make her instantly accessible and likeable. Her naïveté makes others feel protective, then proud of her when she stands up for herself.

    · Traits: brilliant, kind/warm, tender, naïve, honest

    · Subtext: Katie wears her heart on her sleeve most of the time. She is an open book until the last quarter of the story when she learns how to develop a poker face and stonewall Pen.

    · Flaw: Her naïveté makes it hard for her to understand Pen’s keeping her at a distance, then drawing her closer, then pushing her away. She can also be quite stubborn.

    · Values: Honesty, love, honor/integrity, kindness

    · Irony: Her stubborn sense of honor prevents her from responding as she’d like when Pen does reach out.

    · Right for the role: Her naïveté is both her flaw and her strength. It’s what allows her to keep trying with Pen. Pen is defenseless against Katie’s warmth and tenderness. She is also able to hold her own in a demanding world – Pen is in awe of Katie when she fearlessly goes toe-to-toe with Sebastian over Shakespeare.

What I learned? Further defining the character’s profile assists with keeping the character rounded and his/her actions consistent throughout various scenes.

    Neo Newsome

Traits: Dedication to his work, Arrogance/Confidence,
Loyalty. Flaw: Acts with no regard for potential consequences. Values: Success. Irony: He’s focused on himself but has a big heart and
uses what he earns for his family.
What makes this the right character for this role? As
an infant, he was left in a dumpster and later adopted. The fact that he was discarded as trash
drives his desire for success—to prove that he’s not trash, not discounted
    or overlooked, but the best.

    Boonie

    Traits: Deceitful,
    Manipulative, Dishonest. Subtext:
    Laughs, Smiles, Lies.
    Flaw:
    Greed and women. Values:
    Money.
    Irony:
everything he wants his rap partner Neo has.

    Shayla

    Traits:
    Defensive, insecure, Sneaky.
    Subtext:
    She makes it seem that the other person is doing something wrong;
    deflects.
    Flaw: wavering
    emotions; doesn’t commit her heart.
    Values:
    Power.

Irony: gave up something good thinking
she had something better; she didn’t.

    Jannette

    Traits:
    Kind, Honest, Loving, Peaceful.
    Subtext:
Remains silent, ignore question, changes the subject.
    Flaw:
    very timid.
    Values:
    Right living.
    Irony:
While she is spiritual person, she attracts guys that are still finding
    their way.
What makes this the right character for this role? Her peaceful spirit intercept Neo’s destructive
actions at just the right time.
Also, her talents as a songstress compliments his entertainment endeavors.

Robin Atwood’s Character Profile Part 2

What I learned doing this assignment was how to delve more deeply into character development both individually and as they are together.

    Ivy Wren

What draws us to this character? Her happy go lucky state of mind in a world where she is one of the lower classes with no hope of moving up is what draws us in. She brings out the best in others by encouraging them to see life as beneficial as she does.

    • Traits: Introspective, intuitive, obedient, intelligent
    • Subtext: She wants to believe in Henry and his promises so she disregards obvious signs about her future.
    • Flaw: She can easily be taken in by others
    • Values: Honesty, love, family, security, integrity
    • Irony: She has to give in to Henry’s wants to secure a life of love and security. A secret life with Henry flies in the face of integrity and honesty.

What makes this the right character for this role? She is unassuming and trusting of those she loves believing their intent is never to harm her no matter the situation.

    Henry Tudor

What draws us to this character? His childlike charm, playful nature, zest for life and intelligence are what attracts others to him. He is a player who knows that he is irresistible to women specifically and people in general and can have whatever he desires.

    • Traits: Attentive, expressive, manipulator, risk taker
    • Subtext: He recognizes that he may cause Ivy pain but he rationalizes his pursuit of her and ultimate relationship with her is wanted by both and will result in making her life better.
    • Flaw: He rationalizes everything he does is right regardless of its impact on others
    • Values: Duty, power, wealth, loyalty
    • Irony: He is a prince and then a king who can have whatever he desires yet the thing he ends up desiring the most is legitimate sons which is out of his reach because he will not break with the custom of the class system.

What makes this the right character for this role? This role is about a player who manipulates to get what he wants from people regardless of its impact on them so long as it gets him what he feels he needs.

What I learned in doing this assignment is further enhancing my character’s personality for better story development.

    Character: Tina Johnson

What draws us to this character: People can relate to her desire to be loved in a good romantic relationship. And since she’s also a single mother, people can relate to her need to have a father figure help raise her children.

Traits: Talented singer, professional, educated, sarcastic, cold, naive, selfish

Subtext: Has a harsh exterior which covers her inner pain. She has a fragile ego and needs validation from others that she’s loved

Flaw: She moves to quickly in romantic relationships, she’s a target for men to take advantage of her financially and emotionally, doesn’t value herself

Values: Love, romance, attention, sense of belonging, partnership

Irony: She loves “being in love” but doesn’t love herself. She wants to love but has a hardened heart.

What makes this the right character for the role: She’s a good candidate to learn how to release emotional baggage, overcome her painful past and love herself before being able to love someone else.

SUBJECT LINE: Laura’s Character Profiles – Part 2

WHAT DID I LEARN FROM THIS ASSIGNMENT? A layered approach to refining and developing character. The more you know about your character, the easier it is to expound on further details.

    PROTAGONIST: Jacqueline/”Jack” (Heroine)

WHAT DRAWS US TO THIS CHARACTER: She allows us to see this unique town as an “outsider” with her “citified” perspective. As events progress and she learns more about her father, her hard edges begin to fall away. Her confidence is constantly challenged, revealing a clumsy and sympathetic character. She’s not as perfect and right and she thinks she is.

TRAITS: Confident, smart, keenly intuitive, poker-faced, with a honed-edge for cutting through the bullshit. She speaks softly, but can boom with the best of them.

SUBTEXT: Doesn’t suffer fools or idiots. Not very talkative. As Mark Twain says: “Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt.”

    FLAW: Guarded and judging

VALUES: Runs the straight line, strong sense of right and wrong, believes in rules, hates crooks and bullies

IRONY: In order to accomplish putting her father “away”, she goes against her usual strict rule book and conducts a criminal act. (It’s so far-fetched and outside the realm of reality that somehow it doesn’t count. Will need a comment that addresses this.)

WHAT MAKES THIS CHARACTER RIGHT FOR THIS ROLE: Jack is the opposite of Buster, the straight person to his fool.

    ANTAGONIST: Buster (Change Agent)

WHAT DRAWS US TO THIS CHARACTER: He’s a quirky, odd character bringing a unique perspective to a dark topic

TRAITS: Ever eager to entertain and amuse people in his community. He often uses quotes from Shakespeare to express serious emotions or thoughts, because it’s hard for him to be serious. He’s gregarious, hands-on, loving, and most of all, he’s the consummate entertainer.

SUBTEXT: He’s smarter than he puts on, but stubbornly enjoys playing the fool

FLAW: Doesn’t know when to quit playing; center of attention

VALUES: Make people happy, ignore the bad stuff and it will go away, don’t argue, do what you have to do–then apologize later, hum if you don’t know the words

IRONY: He will stand up to do the right thing—even if it is disguised by jokes.

WHAT MAKES THIS THE RIGHT CHARACTER FOR THIS ROLE? It’s Buster! Don’t take things so seriously!

    FLAW:

BELLA: Passive-aggressive; people-pleaser; teammates don’t trust her to tell the truth but what she thinks they want to hear.

EMILIO: An Alpha Male hunk makes him desirable; he marries Bella as much to stay in the spotlight as for love; a Latino controller.

    Ron Berti’s character interview

This was fun. What I learned from this lesson: these techniques are really valuable
to deepen my understanding of my main characters at an emotional level.
I’m reminded that the whole point of the movie is an emotional journey,
and that it’s the interaction of various individual characters and
their emotional “Baggage” (what they bring to the event) that makes the
story interesting to the audience. For example, I learned (I observed myself as I was typing this) “I’m the only guy in the squadron that doesn’t call him ‘Cooch'”. That’s the level of detail that one needs, I guess, to write a compelling screenplay, a subtle, “below the surface” emotional understanding of (especially) the protagonist and antagonist.

    Interview with Lt(jg) Domenico Cuccinelli

I’m just an ordinary guy, but I lost my older brother at Pearl Harbor. I’m pissed, I want to go out and kill as many Japanese in retaliation as I can. Getting to PTs meant I’ve got command of my own vessel – admittedly a small vessel, but it’s mine. I think in a time of war one has to step up for one’s nation all right but for me this is personal.

There are guys in the squadron, including the squadron commander, who want to do everything “by the book”. For me that’s way too constraining. I’ll take my shot whenever I can get it. Those people (especially the commander) might court martial me, and so I have to watch out for that. But I’m not going to apologize for wanting to kill Japs. That’s why I’m here.

I’m pretty sure I have things I need to learn, but aggressiveness and being willing to break some rules aren’t on that list. Right now I can’t imagine what I need to learn, and while I hope to not have to “learn the hard way”, I’m ready for anything.

Habits – really don’t have any yet, except maybe “habits of thinking”. I intend to be a leading PT boat captain, with multiple successes sinking Japanese destroyers and all the men on them.

Fears and insecurities – you won’t hear me talking about such things. I plan to be fearless and courageous.

I think what makes me particularly suited to this assignment is my aggressiveness. I won’t hesitate to take chances if I think there’s a shot for a payoff.

There’s nothing I want to hide from my contemporaries. There is that seething anger, and the depth of it might frighten my commander, make him think I’m irrational. I need to conceal that from him, but he’ll eventually hear about it from other boat captains, so I will insulate myself by letting him know, in a more rational manner, of my attitudes and rationales. And then once I’m successful I can be more honest with him.

I think if we’re going to win this war we’re all going to have to take big chances. Big risks, big rewards.

I really hate the Japs for starting this war. It’s a detour for me personally, I wanted to be an engineer, and then we had Pearl and I lost Ferdinando, my older brother. So for me, it’s personal. I’m glad the Navy gave me access to this boat, 129, but I’m not here as just a citizen, I’m here as Ferdinando’s brother, and I intend to get my piece of Jap flesh.

If I kill enough Japs, I think it will give me some peace and I’ll be able to get on with my life.

    Interview with Lt Walter Dumbrowski

I’m just an ordinary guy from Pittsburgh. I wanted to be a doctor, but now those plans are on hold. I’m here because it’s a man’s duty to come to the aid of his nation when it has been attacked. I was in pre-med in December 41, as soon as I graduated I was recruited by the Navy, specifically for PTs because of my athletic background. I want to keep the war short and get home so I can get back to becoming a doctor.

I think, unlike some other boat captains, that I understand how to follow orders. I will not take undue risks, I know what the standard techniques are they taught us in Melville, and that’s how I intend to run my boat, 152. I will not engage unless everything’s right, I don’t want to risk my men and my boat when it’s unnecessary. I think that’s a strength for me, self-restraint, discipline. I don’t see any personal shortcomings in my character at this time.

I think Cuccinelli is a danger to himself, his crew and his boat. He takes really stupid risks, a demon inside him or something. I don’t like going out on patrol in his group, even though he’s the one with the radar. He makes me nervous. It’s not so much that I want to ruin him or anything, I just don’t want to have anything to do with him. It’s not personal.

If I can avoid being dragged into fights that are too big, that we can’t win, I will succeed at doing my bit for the war effort and going home alive. I really want to get home, I have a great life waiting for me – my fiance, Helen; med school; probably a big home and a big family. I can’t do that if I’m dead or injured.

Cuccinelli is pretty popular among the other boat commanders, so I have to keep my disrespect for him on the down low. I could isolate myself if I seem to have it in for Cuccinelli. I’m the only guy in the squadron that doesn’t call him “Cooch”.

That’s a silly question. I’m not special. I’m just an ordinary guy who wants to get home from this war in one piece so that I can go back to building a life I want.

Most of the guys in the squadron demonstrate professionalism and discipline, and those are the guys I believe will stay safe while prosecuting the war as much as possible. I want to be in their groups, not Cuccinelli’s, because he’s going to get some of his guys killed.

    DAY 3

Benny – Character Profile Part 2

Traits: Selfish, lying, boasting, dreaming, scheming, fast talking, storyteller, charming<div>

Subtext: Hides his fear of failure and not living up to his father’s legacy with lies and jokes.

Flaw: His dishonesty with himself and others

Values: Money, fame, celebrity tat the outset turn into loyalty, friendship, community, integrity

Irony: He has to lean into his conning/lying skills in order to be a good movie producer

What makes this the right character for this role? He’s charismatic and charming and fast-talking and it’s fun to see how he’ll get out of this impossible situation.

Part 1 profile still works, this is a nice extension.

What I learned doing this assignment is to dig deeper into the characters.

Connie Whitmer – Lesson 3 Character Profiles part 2

What I learned : There must be things to draw you to the Antagonist, an admiration of sorts. You must be mesmerized, by him, intrigued. And then he must be most heinous at the same time, so you feel a catharsis, when the Hero defeats him, and justly so. Otherwise, he is reduced to the one dimensional “White Walkers” , “Zombies”, who must depend on numbers alone. And as in fantasy – unkillable.

What draws us to this character? Brian is young, the last and least of the sons of one of the 150 tribal kings. He should never have become king of anything, but instead, forgotten down through the ages. He is the brunt of his brother’s teasing, constantly picked on, yet never feels sorry for himself, never surrenders. He is happy, content, in his insignificance.

Traits: Fearless, willing, protective, hates bullies,

Subtext: Hides his shame and guilt for being unable to save the little girl from a brutal rape.

Flaw:: Admires selfless courage wherever he finds it, even in his enemies, He will tether neither man nor beast.

Values: A fair fight, a worthy goal, an underdog, honor, truth – hates, bullies, liars, traitors

Irony: He doesn’t really look for fights – they look for him.

What makes this the right character for this role? There is no self – pity, quit, surrender, judgement, control freak, me too, in him.

    Antagonist – Malachy II

What draws us to this character? His father twists him, and because he is weak, he lets him, but this also makes him empathetic on some level. He has been given much, but the pressure to keep it is almost unbearable – sins of the Father weigh on him.

Traits: Scheming, manipulative, sneaky, could have been great but weak, emotionally, and character wise.

Subtext: Hiding his deep-seeded jealousy of Brian, the loyalty of his friends, the love of his Clan,

Flaw: Jealousy, willing to cheat, lie, steal, bribe, use, drinks too much, uses sex for release

Values: His position of superiority, as son of High King – King by right.

Irony: He could have been great. But had not the courage, honor, or character.

What makes this the right character for this role? He has gifts, power, strength, looks, but no honor, courage to do what it right.
