    <div>Ted Tronsen’s Unforgettable Fire Horror Plot</div>

What I learned doing this assignment is that you must put together an outline with plot points in order to make sure the plot of the horror story works before you begin writing the screenplay. I’m not sure how I feel about the effectiveness of my plot as this is the first time I’ve constructed it from beginning to end (prior to this I had only written a rough draft for Act I). I know that I will need to tweak it and make some changes before I write the screenplay. I’m still undecided on who the killer is and whether or not I should reveal his identity? In this outline, it is inferred that Jimmy (the cook) is the killer.

ACT 1 — SET UP FOR HORROR

Atmosphere of Evil established – As a new seeker (client) is introduced to the philosophy behind the Therapeutic Community Residence where he has just arrived, it begins to feel like an esoteric strange spiritual cult. In a Poetry group the theme is “Death,” and then in a Study group when they are discussing the principles of Psychomagic, the audience will begin to sense an “atmosphere of evil.”

Connect with the characters – The characters have flashbacks of their suicide attempts as they are reading and writing poetry. Some of them share their traumatic life experiences with the group, but others are too traumatized to share.

The characters are warned not to do it – The characters are warned to reach out for help if they are in crisis or having suicidal thoughts. All sharp objects are kept in a safe and only given to the seekers (clients) upon request and under close supervision.

Denial of Horror – When one of the seekers (Svetlana) apparently commits suicide by slicing her wrists with stained glass from a work of art she had created, the other seekers and staff cannot believe why she would kill herself. She had almost completed the program and was preparing to graduate. Also, she was supposed to attend her daughter’s wedding in a few weeks after leaving The Unforgettable Fire (the name of the Therapeutic Community Residence).

Safety taken away – the seekers seem to have a false sense of security as one of the strongest among them becomes the sacrificial lamb and apparently takes her own life.

Monster: The nature of the beast. – The killer’s presence will not be revealed until after 2 other apparent suicides: a hanging and a drug overdose. The seekers and staff begin to question the suicides and begin to wonder if maybe they are being murdered and that the suicides are being staged by the killer to cover up his crime.

ACT 2 — THE POINT OF NO RETURN

Isolated / Trapped / Abducted – The seekers go on a camping trip to a remote location in the wilderness with 3 guides (counselors).

One of us killed – One of the seekers disappears and is killed in the woods by a masked killer. The audience does not know if the killer is a seeker, a guide or a total stranger.

MIDPOINT: The monster is worse than we thought!

Full pursuit by the killer – the seekers go to sleep in their tents thinking that the fire will die out, however, they are awakened by a raging inferno. The killer has built up a huge bonfire in the middle of the campsite where the fire pit is. The seekers and guides try to extinguish the fire by shoveling dirt and pouring water on it. In the process of getting water from a nearby stream, another seeker disappears and is murdered by the masked killer. A guide (Jimmy the cook) has also mysteriously disappeared.

Terrorized – With 2 seekers and one guide already missing, the remaining seekers and guides begin to search for them and find one of the seeker’s bodies which has been hacked to pieces by an axe murderer. This is when they realize that they are being hunted and that there is a serial killer stalking them in the darkness.

ACT 3 — FULL OUT HORROR

Fight to the death – The seekers and guides decide to make a run for it and take flight by hiking out of the wilderness in the middle of the night. They leave their tents and most of their gear behind. There is a full moon which helps to illuminate the trail, but they also rely on flashlights and a kerosene lantern. A seeker is shot in the head by an arrow. The group panics and run blindly away. The masked killer attacks a male seeker (Brock) who has fallen behind because of a sprained ankle. They fight to the death in hand-to-hand combat and the seeker is stabbed to death by the masked killer with a hunting knife.

Hysteria – Hysteria ensues when the group runs off the trail and realize they are now lost in the woods. Another seeker is killed by an arrow shot from somewhere in the darkness as they try to get their bearings. The killer is picking them off one by one.

The thrilling escape from death – Guided by the North star the remaining seekers and guides head in the direction where they think there is a road. One of the guides (Michael) is killed by an arrow in the back. They find a road and begin following it back to where they think their van is parked. Another seeker is killed by an arrow.

Death returns to take one or more – At this point there is only one seeker and one guide (Todd) still alive. When they get back to the van the guide is killed by an arrow after turning the key in the ignition. With the motor running the hysterical seeker pushes the guide’s body out of the van and begins driving.

Resolution – As the seeker (Elise) drives away, she sees the masked killer standing in the middle of the road behind her in the rear-view mirror. He takes one last shot with his crossbow and the arrow smashes the rear window of the van, but she is able to continue driving away through a veil of tears. The sun is just beginning to rise in the distant horizon.

    Jamie Stegner HORROR PLOT

What I learned from this assignment: Begin with the end. A strong ending helps make a strong beginning.

    Title: BEATING HEARTS

Concept: E.J. a shape-shifting sweet old lady must feed her 9 cats. They want Beating Hearts. Any Beating Heart will do – you have one; come by for tea and cookies anytime. Come alone.

ACT 1 — SET UP FOR HORROR

The atmosphere of Evil established. Setting: Long stone stairway leads up to the old stone house, sitting on a ridge high above the road. Late at night it has the only light on in town, attracting anyone in trouble.

Connect with the characters. Ezmyralda Jenkins is a sweet old lady. Smiling and agreeable, she makes everyone feel welcome. Nobody knows or would guess, that she can shape-shift into a very strong large person, who can tear open your ribcage with her bare hands. Her victims are anyone who comes to her house alone, is not connected to her in any way that would cast suspicion, or would not be missed right away.

The characters are warned not to do it. No, no one gets any warning. But the audience knows.

Denial of Horror: Her primary appearance is as a sweet, slightly stooped, not strong old lady. It looks impossible for her to be the tearer of ribcages. She’s careful to remove devoured bodies to remote areas and move any vehicles away from her house.

Safety taken away. If you come to her house alone, you are vulnerable. Survivors come in pairs, or on days that the cats have already eaten.

Monster: The nature of the beast. Ezmyralda is determined to keep the 9 cats well fed. If she doesn’t, they will eat her. Besides, she loves them; they are sweet kitties. Luckily a series of victims come to the house and disappear without casting suspicion on her.

ACT 2 — THE POINT OF NO RETURN

Isolated / Trapped / Abducted. Ezmyralda gets desperate for cat food and tries to save one of a pair of religious zealots for tomorrow by locking her in a closet.

One of us killed. Opening scene: E.J. throws a policeman off the back deck breaking open his ribcage. He made the mistake of coming alone.

MIDPOINT: The monster is worse than we thought.

Full pursuit by the killer. The religious zealot escapes and E.J. is in full pursuit in her large eagle flying mode.

Terrorized. E.J. must catch the escapee because her companion is already fed to the cats.

    ACT 3 — FULL-OUT HORROR

Fight to the death. Escapee pursued by the eagle.

    Hysteria

The thrilling escape from death. Escapee makes it to the police station. Nobody believes her about E.J. – she couldn’t possibly kill anyone.

Death returns to take one or more. Escapee flees from the police station and Eagle grabs her, hauls her home for cat food.

Resolution: “Kitties, we need to talk.” The 9 cats gather ‘round.

Anna Harper’s Horror Plot Based on some true events

What I learned from this assignment; this assignment made a huge task reasonable and possible, it was gratifying.

THE LONG DARK written by Anna Harper

Set up for Atmosphere of Evil

Aerial view of the remote Yukon forests and lakes.

    Sounds of wolves howling

An old canopied truck is parked on the bush road.

Several intoxicated men wearing masks, one of them is a white man, who appears to be the major instigator. drag a girl out of the truck towards a broken-down cabin. A murder (group) of crows are making their loud noisy calls near the cabin

    CONNECT WITH CHARACTERS

The men note the huge bear claw marks on the cabin door and laugh.

They brutally rape her and pour gasoline over her. They have continued to drink throughout their evil assault, and eventually, pass out. The girl escapes and takes off in the truck.

The crows morph into grizzly bears.

They enter the cabin and drag the men out screaming as they are ripped limb from limb and eat them alive. The bears leave remnants of corpses on the road.

CHARACTERS ARE WARNED NOT TO DO IT

An outsider arrives by small plane to the rez. (BAND/VILLAGE) She is an art instructor, here to help indigenous women sell their crafts.

The pilot, an attractive man likes her and warns her she is about to land in one of the most notorious bush communities. He offers to take her back if she changes her mind. She declines saying she is looking forward to the assignment and having the Yukon bush experience. After all, there are always a few bad apples, everywhere.

The art instructor is in her cabin and decides to go for a walk on the game trail in the woods behind her cabin. She finds a frog and talks to the frog telling him she understands his meaning, talking to many people. She scoops up the frog to take him to water in a quarry on the edge of the woods. She admires and talks about the plants V.O. as she walks with the frog. As she releases the frog, she notices an engulfing rank smell, and wonders what it is dead wildlife?

She hears a blood-curdling howling of an animal, not a wolf/cougar. Begins to get scared and hurries back along the path, feet getting stuck in branches.

In the distance at the end of the path, part of a strange animal appears. Huge, a back view, something like a man, something like an ape, she doesn’t know what she is seeing, she is frozen with fear and fascination. She takes a couple of steps toward the beast, and it disappears. She walks and runs the rest of the way towards her cabin, as she reaches the door, she hears the blood-curdling sound again, much louder and closer, and she turns to see Sasquatch. He disappears.

    THE NATURE OF THE BEAST

The art instructor calls one of her work contacts on the rez, it’s George, an elder, and healer. She asks to see him.

The art instructor takes the traditional tea as a gift to George. She tells him what happened, he sits there in silence for a while. He explains that Sasquatch can have two meanings. It means she is in the right place at the right time, or it can be a warning or both.

George tells her of what happened at the cabin. She is horrified.

    DENIAL OF HORROR

The art instructor declares the Sasquatch was helping her, it was a warning to be careful and that she is indeed meant to be there.

    ACT 2

The band chief calls a meeting and talks about what has happened including the Sasquatch. He tells the community that they have to mend their ways. Some of the badass people ridicule the Chief saying he is too old, and this traditional stuff has no meaning for them.

They disperse from the meeting, some of the guys and a girl assemble at one of the trucks and pass around a pop bottle of homemade white lightning.

The group takes off in the truck. A coyote runs in front of the truck, stops, looks directly at them. The truck kills the coyote and the truck rolls over into the ditch. They all get out, drunk, dazed but alive. They walk over to the road to check on the coyote, he has disappeared, with no blood.

They start staggering down the road as the truck is undrivable. Then Sasquatch smell, and howling begins, Sasquatch appears, scares them half to death and disappears. A Grizzly bear comes running out of the bush, grabs one of the screaming men, and takes him into the bush to eat him. Ravens on the side of the road are ‘talking’.

The rest of the group runs screaming into the night towards the village. It starts to snow.

    FULL OUT TERROR

One by one several band (reservation) people who have committed terrible crimes are targeted by Sasquatch and the grizzly bears.

The whole town, many of whom are drinking, gambling beating their wives and children, feel collective terror as to who is next.

Again the band Chief summons the residents and warns them again about their destructive ways. They hold a healing, cleansing ceremony.

At the ceremony, the art instructor asks to speak. She tells the women she is here to help them sell their crafts so they have more independence and invites them to her group. In private she is becoming more and more scared for her own safety and is considering leaving.

The women come to the group, and as it is tradition hold a sweetgrass smoke cleansing ceremony to open the group meeting. They have brought some of their work with them. As they sit and begin to talk, they disclose why they want to be more independent. Most are suffering various kinds of abuse, as well as their children. The instructor asks them if they would like to make a movie, talking about their lives and their dreams. They agree.

That night the entire village hears the howl of Sasquatch.

One of the women from the group is walking home along the edge of the woods. An Elk comes out of the bush and gores her death, not before she has run to her truck and got her rifle off the back of the truck. She shoots the elk point-blank it doesn’t have any effect. The next morning the gored woman’s body is found in the middle of the village road near the grocery store.

The village is in an emotional meltdown. The Mounties or State Police, try going door to door. They go out on snowmobiles to check the bush as do the local trappers. No result.

That night more Sasquatch howls. The band chief is taking his garbage out of his cabin, he picks up some logs of wood from his stack and walks back to the cabin. The grizzly appears. The Chief talks to the bear in a calm voice.

‘I am not for you tonight brother, you will not eat me, now go brother.’ Grizzly leaves and Chief says the traditional blessing and gratitude “Matsocho, all my relations.”

Goes inside and experiences chest pains. Calls the nursing station for help.

It’s morning and still Yukon dark. A white man, the one who attacked the girl in the opening scene, is walking from the gas station with a gas can in hand. Without any warning, a cougar appears in front of him, a larger cougar. The cougar walks around the man snarling. Terrorizing him. He jumps on him, rolling him on the ground while he screams, gets him face down, and bites him. The man is still alive as the gas can spill on the road, he has many terrible injuries. The cougar stands back as the gas suddenly bursts into flames killing the man.

    RESOLUTION

A conversation between the local police and the art instructor reveals the woman killed had beaten her young daughter almost to death with a belt. She had been convicted of attempted manslaughter and set free. They talk about the burned body of the white man and say they had him in sight as a suspect in the rape attack of the girl.

People in the village discuss that the sounds of the Sasquatch nightly howling has stopped. Chief holds a feast and healing ceremony and gives a speech about right conduct according to the ancestors.

The final shots are of the group of women doing their handicrafts and talking into a camera about their lives.

What I learned: I had already fleshed out much of the story in the previous assignment, but this one helped with that process even more by having all these genre-specific plot points to work with in this order. It also helped me tie the mother’s death (Moral One) at the midpoint to her husband’s death (Rebel turned Sacrificial Lamb) at the end of the film.

    Scott’s Horror Plot

ACT I – SET UP FOR HORROR

Atmosphere of Evil established: Monster Bait opening sequence – a white college kid stumbling home drunk after he leaves a frat party late at night is followed and viciously killed by a rage monster (who we don’t see) lurking in the woods; he’s reported as a missing person (and his remains are not found until later in the film).

Connect with the characters: The Family of Four is packing up their car and saying their last goodbyes to their house and friends in Austin.

Characters warned not to do it: As the Family of Four is saying goodbye, a close family friend tells them it’s not too late to change their mind, insisting that they’re better off staying in Austin and that they don’t have to move to a small town of Vikings. Loner’s best friend privately pleads with her not to go and sends a text message as the car pulls away: “get out.”

Denial of horror: Upon their arrival, the Family of Four notice a string of signs that something is wrong in this town. First, there are literally signs plastered everywhere around town regarding the Monster Bait that went missing the week before. Second, many of their social interactions shift from hospitable to slightly hostile on a dime. Third, they notice that a few people seem to have odd wolf-like physical characteristics. Fourth, they find a lot of small animals lying around that have had their hearts and entrails ripped out, a type of roadkill they’ve never seen before that is appears just about everywhere. While their collective suspicion steadily increases, cognitive dissonance jumps in to explain away their bizarre encounters, minimizing their perception of threat as they observe the drama of the missing college kid and the Red Herring from a distance. (Although Loner clearly doesn’t buy the police explanation.)

Safety taken away: While riding her bike to school, Loner finds Red Herring’s damaged corpse with his heart ripped out lying on his porch, much to the alarm of the authorities who try to hide the evidence of such inexplicable foul play. At a town hall in the high school gym, the police blame his death on wolves, as the population has started to come back in the region in recent years. A band of hunters go searching for them.

Nature of monster revealed: The Family of Four witness their Obnoxious Neighbor get killed by the Mexican manager of the town’s sole Mexican restaurant after complaining about their Spanish-speaking server, getting splattered with blood during the attack. Both the manager and Obnoxious Neighbor had already transformed into werewolf-human hybrids and were hyperaggressive during the conflict with the manager unable to contain his rage, stabbing Obnoxious Neighbor with a sharp knife in the heart and then trying to rip it out before being stopped— with much difficulty—by a police officer dining at the restaurant. Loner captures some of this on her phone’s camera, posting video footage on Instagram, which runs counters the official police report, as it indicates that the manager was both solely responsible for the hyperaggressive nature of the conflict, as well as the deaths of Monster Bait and Red Herring (not wolves), while completely disavowing the transformation and behavior of Obnoxious Neighbor). The fact that the manager was Mexican

ACT II – THE POINT OF NO RETURN

One of us killed: Moral One is pursued by a police car driven by a white werewolf-human hybrid cop until she’s chased into on-coming traffic while she’s riding her bike home from the university one evening; the “accident” puts her in a coma in hospital. (She dies the next evening as the sun sets and the Harvest Moon Festival at the local high school begins. Rebel is by her side when she dies, having sent the kids away from the hospital and off to the festival, not under the impression that she—or they—were in danger of dying that night.)

MIDPOINT – THE MONSTER IS WORSE THAN WE THOUGHT

Full pursuit by the killer: During a performance of the Harvest Moon Festival featuring Innocent and joining his third-grade class on stage, a fully transformed white male “Lone Wolf” Rage Monster (16) enters the gym of the high school and unleashes his wrath upon the townspeople in attendance—including children—quickly killing multiple people and lesser-transformed hybrids as chaos erupts.

Terrorized: People frantically try to flee the building—including Loner & Innocent who get separated during the chaos (Loner is pulled to safety by her Love Interest while Innocent wanders the school hallways alone)—only to be met by more rage monsters outside who’ve been attracted by the smell of fresh blood, something that accelerates the transformation processes of many of the townspeople trapped inside into rage monsters as well. Normal people and hybrids try to hide, flee or fight the rage monsters lurking everywhere, creating the atmosphere and body count of a zombie film. However, when people or hybrids are killed, they stay dead.

ACT 3 – FULL OUT HORROR

Fight to the death: Love Interest is tracked down inside the school by a pack of racist white teenagers who have fully transformed into Rage Monsters. Protecting Loner, he faces them with a metal pole, while Loner hides and is forced to witness his gruesome death before she manages to escape during the feeding frenzy on his body.

Hysteria: Rebel shows up at the high school to inform the kids their mother has died, only to see the madness that has been unleashed. Desperate not to lose another loved one, he rushes inside.

The thrilling escape from death: Rebel finds Loner, who is looking for Innocent and the two are trapped by a Rage Monster but survive the confrontation, with Rebel finding a way to kill it that scares others away, calming down the situation at the school as police cars arrive on the scene.

Death returns to take one or more: Rebel and Loner find Innocent, who had found a safe place to hide and the three are reunited. The happy moment is spoiled when Innocent asks about their mother and Rebel shares the bad news, which results in a group hug in an empty classroom. The trio leave the room carefully and are walking down the hallway when Innocent remembers that he dropped something important in the classroom and turns around to head back. Before he can get there, a Rage Monster comes charging down another hallway, attacking him before Rebel and Loner can intervene. Rebel instinctively rushes toward it, but Loner sees the rest of the pack racing down the hallway to join in the feast and she grabs her stepdad before he runs into danger, and the two run out of the building as fast as they can.

Resolution: Rebel and Loner hop on Rebel’s motorcycle parked outside the high school as they are being chased by Rage Monsters who are able to keep up with them on foot until they get off the school grounds and can accelerate down a main road. However, they’re followed by a bike gang of Rage Monsters that Rebel manages to outwit before he and Innocent decide to ride out of town and all the way to Canada, two hours away. When they get to the empty bridge at the border in the dead of night, they are questioned by an immigration officer who doesn’t want to let them through since they’re not carrying passports and doesn’t believe their story. While the officer makes a consultation, a police car appears in the distance behind them with its lights on, siren blaring. It pulls up right behind them and a pair of werewolf-human hybrid police officers—the same ones responsible for Moral One’s death—get out of the car as they walk steadily toward Rebel and Loner, with Rebel standing ready to defend them as they both shout for help. Rebel (and Sacrificial Lamb) is gruesomely attacked by the officers before they turn their attention to Loner, who starts running across the bridge. Just as she’s about to be caught, a Canadian border agent fires her gun, stunning (but not killing) the hybrid police officers. Guards rush to surround and handcuff them, whisking at traumatized Loner away to safety.

    John Stimson’s Horror Plot

    2. What I learned doing this assignment is you’re looking at building the story from “the Monster” out instead of the protagonist in another genre.

    1.

ACT 1 – SET UP FOR HORROR

The atmosphere of evil is setup on the first page when Mojo, an outlaw biker and lead supporting character, encounters a mysterious man walking on the side the road; Mojo sees his eyes, they seem like the eyes of a demon.

On page 3, that mysterious man kills the first victim.

A Radio Preacher for KGOD-AM is here to narrate and admonish from “The Book of Revelation” to his listening audience that Lucifer is now battling his rival, so they must send their donations to the station.

Deputy Lopez crosses the line from law enforcement to criminal.

The Nature of The Beast moment is when Lucifer/The Trucker Driver slaughters children inside a school.

ACT 2 – THE POINT OF NO RETURN

Angelita “becomes an outlaw biker’s girlfriend.” However, the gang rape is interrupted by the trucker driver, who parks the 18-wheeler outside the motel (the rape was being watched by the creepy motel manager). And what we didn’t see happen to the school children we do get to see happen to the bikers—decapitations, etc., gore for gore’s sake yes, but think of it as cinematic spectacle.

Angelita goes with Michael in his car and the trucker driver pursues them, like the movie “Duel.”

MIDPOINT: The monster is worse than we thought!

Deputy Lopez/the audience sees the carnage in the motel room: the eviscerated bikers. Also, the bodies from the migrants, that were in the trailer of the 18-wheeler, are discovered in a ritual formation.

ACT 3 – FULL OUT HORROR

Michael and the truck driver engage in a vehicle duel until it climaxes with the truck driver and his 18-wheeler colliding with a train in a fiery crash.

Michael the Archangel and Lucifer the dragon fight mano-a-mano.

The Truck Driver reappears and kills the Radio Preacher as he leaves the radio station.

The Motel Manager replays his closed-circuit video and sees how the bikers were slaughtered and who actually killed them. And that killer appears in the room with him. Fade out.

    Rich’s Horror Plot

What I learned doing this assignment is the importance of building the story’s skeleton. Knowing what needs to go where and when so as to keep it flowing and making sense.

    1. Knowing your concept, fill in one or two sentences for each of the plot points.

ACT 1 — SET UP FOR HORROR

    • Atmosphere of Evil established

    ◦ A local townie pulls his truck to the side of the road, dumps his mattress and pulls away. Later, a cargo van picks up the mattress. It follows him home and kidnaps him. As the van pulls away, we see the storage company logo.

    • Connect with the characters

    ◦ The family starting their day at home. Daughter gets new mattress. Son tasked with taking old mattress to dump on way to concert with friends. Probie shows up to deliver lieutenant mom’s “lost” keys for thousandth time but with new GPS tag attached.

    • The characters are warned not to do it.
