    Phyllis’ Episode Descriptions

I learned from this assignment that you can have character arc moments along with the external goal actions to develop a rich set of episodes.

    Episode 1:

Hook/Intrigue: Sasha is fired from her dream job and is unemployable.

Main Character Journey: Sasha wants to make an impact fighting climate change.

Major Challenge/Conflict: She is out of options but won’t give up, despite her mother’s admonitions.

Action/Reaction: Duncan approaches Sasha because she forced his sister to pay her highest fine, ever, and she accepts, thinking she’ll be supporting climate scientists and like-minded politicians.

Cliffhanger: Sasha learns Duncan’s mission is to track and kill creatures spawned by the build-up of greenhouse gases and has to decide whether to stay in or back out.

    Episode 2:

Hook/Intrigue: Sasha has agreed to the sweetened deal and accompanies Duncan to a contained wildfire, where three bodies have been cooked from the inside, without a mark on them.

Main Character Journey: Sasha intends to humor Duncan but can’t keep her skeptical, practical side in check.

Major Challenge/Conflict: To tie these bodies to the creatures they seek.

Action/Reaction: Sasha doesn’t want to waste time canvassing for witnesses, and instead pursues Duncan’s scientific contacts to concentrate on the bodies.

Cliffhanger: Sasha finds that every cell of the dead bodies has been infused with greenhouse gases.

    Episode 3:

Hook/Intrigue: While “on pause,” Sasha learns more about Duncan the “man child,” but not what’s driving him.

Main Character Journey: Sasha starts to let her guard down and get to know Duncan, whose openness is inviting.

Major Challenge/Conflict: Sasha has difficulty trusting others or letting them in.

Action/Reaction: Sasha doesn’t want to talk about herself, but is curious why Duncan ever worked for the family company at all.

Cliffhanger: Duncan is served with court papers from his ex-wife barring him from visiting his daughter’s gravesite.

    Episode 4:

Hook/Intrigue: Sasha and Duncan bond when he helps her get revenge on her ex-boyfriend for conspiring with Delia to get her fired.

Main Character Journey: Sasha succumbs to her flaw of needing revenge, which stems from her childhood wound of abandonment.

Major Challenge/Conflict: The moral dilemma of ruining someone’s life.

Action/Reaction: Duncan has his Senator friend offer a prestigious job to the ex-boyfriend, but after he resigns from the DOJ, the Senator apologizes that the funding for the position didn’t come through.

Cliffhanger: As Sasha and Duncan celebrate their success, they receive the analytics report, cross-referencing suspicious climate-related deaths with areas with high emissions of greenhouse gases.

    Episode 5:

Hook/Intrigue: On the hunt, Duncan and Sasha travel to a town with an enormous coal plant, where the most recent suspicious deaths occurred.

Main Character Journey: Sasha reconfirms her flawed worldview—always be suspicious of people’s motives.

Major Challenge/Conflict: A nosy reporter keeps trying to find out what a billionaire environmental activist is doing in their town.

Action/Reaction: Over Sasha’s objections, Duncan gives the prostitute a lot of money to “start a new life.”

Cliffhanger: Sasha was right, the prostitute was working for the news reporter, who has confirmed Duncan is looking for creatures spawned by greenhouse gases.

    Episode 6:

Hook/Intrigue: The nosy reporter from the coal town shows up on Duncan’s doorstep wanting to do an in-depth story about his hunt for these creatures

Main Character Journey: Sasha wonders if she’s being too wary about the reporter.

Major Challenge/Conflict: Sasha’s distrust conflicts directly with Duncan’s open and trusting nature.

Action/Reaction: Duncan agrees to the interview because now that the reporter knows, better to get the story right, and the publicity may flush out new leads.

Cliffhanger: The reporter tries to blackmail Duncan to stop his posting his humiliating piece, but Sasha short-circuits that plan by having Duncan use contacts to run the story in The National Inquirer, where it will be dismissed.

    Episode 7:

Hook/Intrigue: To hunt down a creature, Duncan decides to use himself as bait, but Sasha protests when she learns innocent bystanders could be hurt.

Main Character Journey: Sasha doesn’t trust her instincts completely so she draws the line at putting innocent people at risk.

Major Challenge/Conflict: The moral dilemma of allowing Duncan to put himself or other people in danger to slay this creature.

Action/Reaction: Using Jupiter Intelligence data, Sasha can predict with high probability when a natural gas leak will happen and release tons of methane, but Duncan doesn’t want to alert the town to the danger until Sasha puts her foot down.

Cliffhanger: When the leak starts, Duncan chases a creature he spies, but as he nears it, the air heats up and an explosion sends Duncan flying.

    Episode 8:

Hook/Intrigue: With a seriously injured Duncan in the hospital, Sasha is vulnerable to Delia’s pressure to betray him, for his own good, and hers—Delia will fund her foundation now.

Main Character Journey: Sasha must face down her fear of betrayal, and her tendency to pull the trigger first when she has the chance.

Major Challenge/Conflict: Sasha must decide to take a leap of faith with Duncan or be practical and join forces with Delia to have Duncan committed.

Action/Reaction: Sasha has to talk to Duncan before she goes ahead and betrays him.

Cliffhanger: In the hospital, Duncan confesses to Sasha that he was a terrible father who gave his daughter anything she wanted, including a Sweet 16 on a private Caribbean Island during hurricane season and she was lost when disaster struck.

    Episode 9:

Hook/Intrigue: While Duncan is recovering from injury, Sasha investigates on her own and discovers the partial remains of an unidentifiable creature.

Main Character Journey: Sasha learns, like Hamlet, that there’s more to heaven and earth than is thought of in her philosophy.

Major Challenge/Conflict: Sasha must choose whether to side with Duncan or Delia.

Action/Reaction: Sasha infiltrates the quarantined town with the methane leak and, returning to the area of the explosion, finds partial remains of the creature Duncan saw.

Cliffhanger: Sasha turns down Delia’s offer.

    Episode 10:

Hook/Intrigue: A renowned scientist friend of Duncan’s sequences the DNA of the creature’s remains and discovers that when the creature absorbs high amounts of greenhouse gases, its body releases energy as intense heat.

Main Character Journey: Sasha’s trust in Duncan pays off when they track down a creature in the coal town.

Major Challenge/Conflict: How do Sasha and Duncan find a living creature?

Action/Reaction: They stake out the largest oil refinery in the country, searching for tremendously high heat signatures.

Cliffhanger: Duncan and Sasha track down the creature, but bullets don’t kill it, and they barely escape with their lives. How do you kill them?

    Episode 1:

Sasha is riding high from her EPA investigation that led to criminal prosecution of a major oil company. But she is betrayed by her boyfriend at the Department of Justice, who allows the company to get off with a settlement—one that includes having her fired. Unemployable, she still wants to make an impact fighting climate change.

She is out of options when Duncan shows up, impressed that she forced his sister, the CEO of the oil company, to pay her highest fine, ever. He offers Sasha a high-paying job, but it doesn’t involve funding climate science and supportive politicians. His mission is to slay deadly creatures spawned by the build-up of greenhouse gases, and he needs Sasha’s expertise to track them. Convinced he’s delusional, Sasha has to decide whether to stay or flee.

    Episode 2:

Sasha accepts a sweetened deal—if she stays for three years, Duncan will pour millions into an environmental foundation she will own. She accompanies him to a contained wildfire, where three bodies have been cooked from the inside, without a mark on them. Duncan believes they’re victims of his creatures. Sasha intends to humor him, but can’t keep her practical side in check. Forget canvassing for witnesses to a creature sighting, she’s sure the answers lie with the bodies.

Duncan and Sasha clash—who’s the boss, here? But Sasha’s stubbornness wins out. Duncan uses his money in all the right places, to arrange for a special autopsy on the bodies, and then to bring in renowned scientists from his network. The answers make no sense—in each body, every cell has been infused with greenhouse gases. Duncan takes that as evidence that these people were victims of his creatures.

    Episode 3:

After persuading Duncan that they need his AI-driven data analytics company to crunch numbers to locate these creatures, Sasha experiences what downtime is like with the immature Duncan. He shows her his inner sanctum, a cross between the bat-cave and a Star Wars training facility, and admits he’s always wanted to be a Jedi Knight. He’s even having a laser-based light-saber developed.

Sasha won’t let her guard down and talk about herself, but asks why Duncan ever worked for the family company at all. He laughs that he was born into it, and was being groomed for the top spot until Delia exploited how irresponsible he was. He admits to liking his last job there, as the liaison to sporting and entertainment events—it was glamorous and easy. But he was different then. They’re interrupted as Duncan is served with court papers from his ex-wife barring him from visiting his daughter’s gravesite.

    Episode 4:

While Duncan is dealing with his ex in court, Sasha learns that her ex-boyfriend has parlayed his big “win” over Delia’s company into a promotion. Without any close friends to vent to, she tells Duncan she wishes she could get her ex fired like she was. Sasha’s thirst for revenge stems from her childhood wound of abandonment. It overpowers her moral compass that would normally keep her from ruining somebody’s life.

Duncan is from an entitled world that treats people like pawns in a chess game. And he is distraught, with his ex-wife accusing him of being responsible for the death of their daughter. He wants to do something, so he has a Senator friend offer Sasha’s ex a prestigious job. After he resigns, the Senator claims the funding for the position fell through. No time for Sasha to celebrate. The analytics report has arrived, with likely locations identified.

    Episode 5:

On the hunt, Duncan and Sasha travel to a town with an enormous coal-fired power plant where the most recent suspicious deaths occurred. The arrival of a billionaire environmental activist puts everybody on edge. A dogged reporter keeps trying to find out why Duncan is there. Sasha warns him to keep quiet about the creatures as she investigates.

Duncan is enchanted by a “lady of the evening” who “services” their hotel. She found the bodies and noticed something strange in the shadows. She’s vague, drawing him out until he shows her a rendering of a creature (how does he have this?) and she confirms her sighting. Sasha, always skeptical about people’s motives, finds out Duncan gave the lady a lot of money to start a new life. Turns out, she was working for the reporter, who now knows Duncan is hunting mysterious creatures.

    Episode 6:

The dogged reporter shows up on Duncan’s doorstep wanting to do an in-depth story about his pursuit of the creatures. Sasha’s automatic distrust conflicts directly with Duncan’s open and trusting nature, and he convinces her that he might as well do the interview. Now that the reporter knows, it’s better to get the story right, and the publicity may flush out new leads.

Perhaps Sasha is being too wary about the reporter. But, no, he tries to blackmail Duncan, threatening to expose his delusions in a humiliating piece. Sasha short-circuits that plan by having Duncan use contacts to run an over-the-top story of their own making in The National Inquirer, where it will be dismissed.

    Episode 7:

Duncan’s analytics company makes a breakthrough. They can now predict, roughly, when and where a disaster releasing greenhouse gases will occur. That should lure creatures. Duncan decides to be onsite for a predicted natural gas leak, as bait. But that means they can’t warn the surrounding community.

Faced with the moral dilemma of hurting innocents, Sasha puts her foot down. Duncan will have a team masquerading as the gas company evacuate the community as soon as Duncan’s instruments detect the leak. One hour later, they’ll alert the authorities. During Duncan’s short window, he spies a creature and gives chase, but as he nears it, the air heats up and a methane explosion sends Duncan flying.

    Episode 8:

Sasha is in the waiting room of the hospital, awaiting word on the badly injured Duncan. Delia arrives and pressures the vulnerable Sasha to testify at a competency hearing that the dangerously delusional Duncan should be committed. Delia adds that, to make up for the betrayal, she will fund Sasha’s foundation right now—not three years from now.

Sasha tries to rationalize that it’s for Duncan’s own good, but she’s torn between being practical or taking a leap of faith. She has to talk to him. She sneaks into his hospital room and Duncan, feeling confessional, reveals that he was a terrible father who gave his daughter anything she wanted, including a Sweet 16 on a private Caribbean Island during hurricane season. Disaster struck, they were swept away, and he swears he saw a creature take her. Now she knows what’s driving him.

    Episode 9:

Sasha has decided she needs to investigate one more time before she decides whether to side with Duncan or Delia. She infiltrates the now quarantined town and tracks back to the area of the methane explosion. On the perimeter, hidden in a burnt grove of trees, she finds small biological remains, easily missed. When she has Duncan’s scientist friends examine them, they can’t identify them as any species known to man.

Blown away, Sasha knows what she has isn’t much to go on. But, maybe for the first time, she’s keeping an open mind. She turns down Delia’s offer.

    Episode 10:

Duncan is recuperating at home under the care of private doctors. Sasha is with his friend, a renowned bio-engineer, who is examining the remains on a cellular level. An experiment shows that when these cells absorb high levels of greenhouse gases, they release energy as intense heat. Hot enough to cook human organs inside the body.

Sasha realizes they can track these creatures using sophisticated heat sensors. Duncan has that equipment. And since oil refineries are the largest stationary emitters of greenhouse gases, they can stake out the most massive complex in the country. Duncan insists on going with Sasha. Their heat sensors lead them to a creature, and an armed Duncan tries to shoot it down. The bullets have no effect. Sasha and Duncan barely escape with their lives.

So, these creatures are real. But how the hell do you kill them?

    Kim’s Episodes Descriptions

What I learned from doing this assignment is how to organize each of my episodes in a way that explains the essential plot of each one.

    Episode 1:

    • Hook/Intrigue: A psychologist, ERIC, is on phone, flirting with someone. Someone comes up behind him, stabs him with a knife, it’s obvious he knows his attacker.

    • Main Character journey: The man’s wife, NATALIE, finds him a bloodied mess and calls 911. We discover the wife suffers from Disassociate Identity Disorder, and the police are suspicious of her.

    • Major Challenge/Conflict: Natalie knows she did not try to kill Eric.

    • Action/Reaction: She freaks out, argues, her different personalities come out and it’s eerie to hear her play different parts.

    • Cliffhanger: The police want to confiscate her phone, when she grabs it from her purse, a piece of paper falls out with it. She picks it up, reads it, gasps. The police are too busy noting the blood on her phone to notice. As they lead her away, the paper falls to the floor. It reads: “You are the sacrificial lamb.”

    Episode 2:

    • Hook/Intrigue: The police can’t hold her without proof of her guilt, and her husband claims she was not involved in the attack. Her friend, LADONNA, drives her home from the police station and Natalie is in a panic, wondering if she could have attacked Eric and just can’t remember doing it.

    • Main Character journey: Natalie’s sister arrives, and Natalie mistakenly thinks it’s because she wants to check on her after what has happened, but instead, JEANINE asks her for money.

    • Major Challenge/Conflict: Knowing the money will be used to fuel her sister’s drug habit, Natalie refuses. Jeanine threatens to tell Eric about the son Natalie gave up for adoption when she was sixteen. And about things that happened to them as kids.

    • Action/Reaction: Natalie gives in and writes her sister a check.

    • Cliffhanger: Eric writes a check at the hospital, and it bounces. He looks at the past activity and sees various amounts of money Natalie has taken out of their account at irregular intervals, although it is always the same amount.

    Episode 3:

    • Hook/Intrigue: Eric is finally feeling better and looking forward to his weekend with his daughter, but his ex-wife, DANIELLE, refuses to allow LINNIE to stay with Eric and Natalie.

    • Main Character journey: Eric calls his mother to intervene. Eric has never been able to handle conflict or stress on his own.

    • Major Challenge/Conflict: His mother tells Danielle she will stay there as a second set of hands while Eric recovers from his injuries, and she will keep an eye on Natalie as well. Although Danielle protests, his mother uses everything in her arsenal to fight back, and she wins.

    • Action/Reaction: Natalie is upset that her mother-in-law, a woman who has openly said Natalie isn’t good enough for her son, is staying the entire weekend.

    • Major Challenge/Conflict: She knows she has Dissociative Identity Disorder and is being treated for it by Eric, but she keeps having blasts of weird memories and notes written to her. • Major Challenge/Conflict: Natalie wants to know if Eric is cheating on her. But Matt turns the table and tells her that she would deserve it, since the only reason Eric isn’t with his sister Danielle is because Eric broke up with her after being Natalie’s psychiatrist and cheating on his sister with her.

    • Action/Reaction: During their subsequent argument, Natalie gets flashes of fire, something burning. A memory of pain, anger, hurt. She leaves the office, confused.

    • Cliffhanger: She goes home and finds Eric packing his bags. His mother is beside him, prompting him to just go. After he is gone, she finds the shoebox of messages opened up on his bed. One of them reads: “Where did all your money go?”

    • Major Challenge/Conflict: Natalie tells him about the therapy, says she’s making breakthroughs. Tells him about the barn, the fire. He is angry, thinks the therapist is leading her on. Says he’s going with her to the next appointment.

    • Action/Reaction: Natalie feels they are going somewhere good, now. He loves her. He’s going to take care of things finally.

    Episode 9:

    • Hook/Intrigue: Danielle drops Linnie off for a supervised weekend with Eric, his mother, and Natalie. Eric is on the phone a lot. Natalie feels uncomfortable with it.

    • Main Character journey: Natalie is becoming different personalities again, and Eric wants to stop it from happening during Linnie’s visit, so he gives Natalie a sedative. His mother refers to this being something he occasionally does. While she fixes him lunch, he is sexting with Krystal.

    Episode 10:

    • Main Character journey: Eric is tired of Natalie’s accusations when he hasn’t done anything.

    • Major Challenge/Conflict: He leaves to take Linnie back to Danielle’s, and we learn that Eric’s mother has been monitoring his phone and “cleaning up” after him. When he returns home, his mother warns him that he’s being careless.

    • Action/Reaction: Eric is angry, he’s finding he is losing control more and more. He begins to cry like a young child.

    • Cliffhanger: His mother holds him, strokes his head as if he’s a little boy. She makes a phone call and tells the other person on the line that Eric is having a bad episode with his Dissociative Identity Disorder, and she needs to get the help of the other person on the other line. The person on the line is Krystal, who says, “Okay, I’ll be right over.”

    Subject line: Marcus’s Episode Descriptions

What I learned doing this assignment was the next step in writing episode descriptions. I had questions about some things. Hopefully, I guessed the right answers.

    Episode 1:

Trabeus, contractor to a local gangster, captures a rival gang member and tortures him for information, both physically and with infallible truth magic. The man dies in agony giving up nothing. Trabeus learns that he had the wrong man – an innocent “civilian”. Stymied, Trabeus finds that he’s infested with an old spell linking him to Cassandra.

Cassandra, seeking her old enemy, had incorrectly cast a spell that temporarily confused Trabeus’ magical senses, causing his mistake. But his atrocity makes his local newspapers. Cassandra, terrible with the internet, calls on Beatrix to help. Beatrix, a member of the coven, is secretly in love with Trabeus and now knows he’s still alive.

    Episode 2:

Cassandra wants to resume her ancient war with Trabeus who lives in witness protection. Difficult to find. She trusts Beatrix to find the town where the atrocity happened. She orders Beatrix to help her reconstitute the coven for the upcoming fight.

Trabeus, knowing that Cassandra is hunting him, also knows that he might now reunite with Beatrix. He can’t seek her without alerting Cassandra, so he orders his henchman, Marius to quietly locate her. But Marius is disgruntled and this is his opportunity to get back at Trabeus.

    Episode 3:

Cassandra knows two things: She’s getting too old to fight and her coven mates (also old) have lives they are reluctant to put on hold. The answer is to find the fabled Puer Aeternum (eternal youth) spell. And it takes some special magic to even find a spell like that – if it even exists.

Trabeus, unable to unlink himself from Cassandra yet, accordingly knows of her search for Puer Aeternum. He can’t actively interfere without revealing himself, but he must seek Puer Aeternum on his own. It’s a race.

    Episode 4:

Beatrix reports to Cassandra that their former coven mates each have serious problems that Cassandra will have to help with. Astra is in prison. Endor and her Voodoo boyfriend have created a zombie and it escaped, and Winifred, worst of all, has opened a portal to a deep netherworld and has become mercilessly entangled with a creature.

Cassandra visits Winifred and finds her deathly ill. Cassandra tries to nurse her, but Winifred inexplicably throws her out. Cassandra spies on her and sees the creature, Nightblue, but doesn’t know what it is. It merges with Winifred and she becomes young.

    Episode 5:

Cassandra redoubles her efforts to uncover Puer Aeternum. She has a breakthrough, but only half the spell materializes, puzzling her deeply. Cassandra knows her own history of mishandling big spells and starts over. She doesn’t know that Trabeus intercepted it and stole the other half of the spell.

Marius surreptitiously plants clues for Beatrix to find on the internet and she narrows her search for Trabeus to three towns. She packs her bags and hits the road. And doesn’t inform Cassandra.

    Episode 6:

Beatrix has disappeared. Cassandra desperately needs help figuring out what she did wrong finding Puer Aeternum and on what Winifred has gotten herself wrapped up with. She travels to Louisiana to find the brilliant and powerful Endor.

Endor’s boyfriend, Jean St. Mark, won’t let Cassandra in. Cassandra hears Endor sobbing inside the house and angrily barges in. Endor is blind drunk and babbling. Jean furiously insists that Cassandra leave and won’t reveal what’s going on except to say that Endor should have told him who the cadaver was that they used to raise the zombie.

    Episode 7:

Cassandra, trying to help Endor, goes to town and searches for the zombie who is called Deathsong. She finds the hideous Deathsong in a back alley defending a blind homeless man against would-be thieves. Deathsong is powerful and kills both men in the fight.

Cassandra recognizes Deathsong as Endor’s long-dead daughter. She tries to convince Deathsong to return to Endor. The police come and Deathsong flees. Cassandra is arrested for murder.

    Episode 8:

Cassandra fabricates a story and magically convinces the police of it, but not well enough to get the charges dropped. The judge releases her without bail, though. Deathsong has vanished and Endor won’t talk to her.

Winifred then surprises Cassandra asking for help. Cassandra hurries there to find a young, healthy and beautiful Winifred (inhabited by Nightblue). Another creature, Twilightgreen is there. Winifred apologizes profusely and Twilightgreen absorbs itself into Cassandra’s body and takes control.

    Diana’s Episode Descriptions

What I learned: By using the template and taking it one episode at a time, I created a rough outline of an entire season. Who knew? It also was heaps of fun!

    1) Season 1: To Have and to Hold

    Episode 1: Bedazzled and Bankrupt

Hook/Intrigue: Opens with Jake barbequing over a GIANT flame; he is burning checks—LOTS of them. When his wife, Lupe, steps outside they argue over money.

Main Character journey: Jake is gullible and WAY too trusting. He is the head of IT for the FBI and unwittingly married a career criminal whose mother-in-law practices dark magic and heads the crime family.

Major Challenge/Conflict: Jake wants to provide for his family, but his wife, Lupe, wants to destroy his family emotionally and financially and has a santeria mother to help her.

Action/Reaction: Jake went bankrupt because of his wife’s lavish spending. Lupe refuses to live on a budget and steals a BIG stack of checkbooks and forges Jake’s signature to continue with her lavish spending. While Jake is burning checks on the BBQ, Lupe pretends to be shredding credit cards in the bedroom but is actually shredding fashion magazines and places Jake’s cards in a secret safe, along with the stacks of checks she stole from the patio and card numbers she stole from her moms in the neighboorhood by memorizing the numbers when they are out shopping.

Cliffhanger: Jake walks into the bedroom as Lupe is closing the safe in the closet. Will he find out what she is up to?

    Episode 2: Retail Therapy

Hook/Intrigue: Jake’s “devoted” wife is commiting mail fraud.

Main Character journey: Jake tries to convince Lupe to get a job as he works to get his life back in order. They fight, but eventually she relents. Or so Jake thinks.

Major Challenge/Conflict: Jake and his family are hard up for money. Lupe refuses to work a real job. Why would she? So she decides to commit mail fraud instead and when he thinks she’s working, she’s buying lavish goods with bad checks and other people’s cards and sells them on eBay for profit. Jake, an honest, hard-working man has no clue what Lupe is up to. He went so far as to pack her lunch on her first day of “work,” which Lupe tosses in the trash when he leaves for work, only to invite her girlfriends to an expensive lunch that she pays for with a bad check.

Action/Reaction: Lupe also sells Jake’s cherished possessions on eBay for money. We’re talking major league stuff here: Vintage baseball cards, rare coin collection, the Rolex she gave him as a wedding gift, and pockets her kids’ college fund that his parents set up for them. You name it. There is no limit to her greed or manipulation.

Cliffhanger: Jake comes home and makes dinner and finds Lupe’s lunch in the trash. Soon after Tiffany’s calls about a bad check and Jake apologizes and pulls from his savings to pay for a diamond tennis bracelet.

Episode 3: A Good Man Is Hard to Find

Hook/Intrigue: Jake and Lupe fight over the tennis bracelet and the lunch. Lupe says she found a better job and bought the bracelet weeks ago and that she will return it. Jake tells her to keep it as an early anniversary present and they make up. When Jake comes home from work, Lupe and her ex-boyfriend are having sex in their bedroom. Boyfriend hides in closet. Lupe asks Jake to get something from store. Jake is tired and declines and sits down and watches television. Boyfriend escapes out back window as his son Carlos watches with his telescope.

Main Character journey: Jake is being used by Lupe, who is not only bankrupting him again, but also cheating on him with her ex-boyfriend.

Major Challenge/Conflict: Jake is trying to make things right. Lupe is doing everything in her power to prevent that so she can leave him high and dry like she did with her other four husbands.

Action/Reaction: Jake finds expensive items filling his basement and loses his shit. Lupe calms him down and says she bought them for cheap at estate sales and is selling them on eBay for profit. Jake is impressed with his wife’s ingenuity.

Cliffhanger: Jake stops at post office on his way home from work and the postal worker wheels out several dollies piled high with stacks of bins. He is shocked and starts going through the parcels—all addressed to him.

    Episode 4: Stepping Out

Hook/Intrigue: Jake has to rent a U-Haul to bring the packages home. He confronts Lupe about his name being on the packages, as well as the volume of packages, and Lupe says not to worry about it. She just had them addressed to head of household for tax purposes, so he could declare the income properly. Satisfied, but exasperated, Jake wheels the parcels inside.

Main Character journey: Lupe finds her mail fraud lucrative and pays for a girl’s weekend—with her boyfriend! Jake is oblivious to Lupe’s infidelities. He’s a workaholic and too stressed about the bankruptcy to be suspicious of anything…until one of Lupe’s friends stops by while Lupe is away. Jake’s kid Carlos is working at Radio Shack and buys a keyboard logger, so he can hack into his dad’s portal and get some dirt on his mom’s boyfriend that he can use to blackmail him with.

Major Challenge/Conflict: In addition to the above, Jake walks into Carlos’ room and finds him watching the girl across the street getting undressed with his telescope. Jake threatens to take the telescope away if he isn’t going to use it for stargazing like he promised.

Action/Reaction: One of Lupe’s friends that she is supposed to be on weekend trip with swings by the house to borrow something. Jake confronts her about the weekend, and she realizes Lupe is up to something and covers for her. Jake starts to grow suspicous of Lupe.

Cliffhanger: Lupe’s lies and infidelities are starting to catch up with her. Jake hears about a sting operation at work pertaining to mail fraud and comes home early to find Lupe and her mom piling MORE packages in the basement.

    Episode 5: Trouble in Paradise

Hook/Intrigue: Carlos is watching the girl across the street with his telescope and notices a guy with out of state tags pull up near their house. He starts to zoom in when he’s called down for dinner. He overhears Jake asking Lupe about her eBay business and Carlos grows suspicious. Weren’t they bankrupt? Why is his mom buying so much stuff?

Main Character journey: Lupe continues to buy in excess with bad checks and sells for double on eBay. Because she is using Jake’s name on the checks and parcels, the Feds think it’s Jake. She is setting him up for her crimes.

Major Challenge/Conflict: Jake is growing more concerned about the dolllies of bins containing packages for Lupe at the post office. What the fuck is she buying? When Jake is at work Lupe sells all the items on eBay using Jake’s account and has Mike drive the packages to the post office for her.

Action/Reaction: Lupe says she is going to rent a storage unit for her eBay business. Jake tells her to stop, that she should sell what she has before buying more stuff. He sees a different side to Lupe that he never noticed before: Think super bitch on steroids. Lupe ignores him and asks Mike to rent a unit for her.

Cliffhanger: Lupe asks Jake to go to the post office to pick up more packages. Jake is pissed, because he asked her to stop purchasing items. When he arrives, he is called into an interrogation room to discuss the volume of packages he has coming and going.

    Episode 6: Die Hard

Hook/Intrigue: Jake is in a small room at the post office signing stacks and stacks of checks to prove it wasn’t him.

Main Character journey: Jake goes home furious. Lupe is nowhere to be found. Her calls go straight to voicemail. Jake throws his phone on the pavement, shattering it.

Major Challenge/Conflict: Jake is being set up for Lupe’s crimes. When he comes home he finds Carlos on the computer and asks him where his mother is. Carlos turns on his screensaver to prevent his dad from seeing the PI work he is doing on his mom’s boyfriend and tells him she left with Mike hours ago.

Action/Reaction: Jake calls the ex-boyfriend who is also a friend of the family to see if he knows where she is. No dice. Then he calls the mother-in-law who is busy chanting in Spanish and making potions for God knows what and does not pick up.

Cliffhanger: Jake drives to Lupe’s best friend’s house to see if she is there. On the way, he runs off the road and his Jeep flips over several times.

Episode 7: Old Flames and New Troubles

Hook/Intrigue: Jake is in the hospital in a body cast, sipping water through a straw. Carlos stops by with a chessboard. They play chess. Jake tells his son you always have to be ten steps ahead of your opponent. Carlos nods and then beats his dad.

Main Character journey: Lupe is ten steps ahead of Jake and has been setting him up to take the fall for her crimes since day 1. Jake is miserable and in heaps of pain. Will he ever be the same, financially and emotionally?

Major Challenge/Conflict: Lupe is still nowhere to be found. With Jake in the hospital, Carlos spends his time watching the girl across the street with his telescope in his darkened room. He notices the same car watching his house and decides to run the plates using his dad’s portal with a keyboard logger he bought at Radio Shack where he works.

Action/Reaction: Jake calls Lupe and she answers! He asks her to pick him up from the hospital, and she rushes over, playing the concerned/dutiful wife.

Cliffhanger: Postal worker who interrogated Jake has conversation with FBI agent and handwriting analyst. It is not Jake’s signature. The agent dumps Lupe’s phone and computer and starts scrolling through EVERYTHING.

    Episode 8: In the Weeds

Hook/Intrigue: Jake is home on crutches and finds Carlos using his work portal. When confronted Carlos says he saw a man watching the house and wanted to run his plates, which he’s already done, but doesn’t want to say anything until he goes WAY down that rabbit hole to see what else he finds.

Main Character journey: With Jake out of the hospital, Lupe is called in for questioning at FBI. She plays the innocent deer in the headlights and tells them Jake is the mastermind and criminal behind the eBay shenanigans and that he forced her to do it. FBI isn’t buying it. Jake bails Lupe out. She is in tears and begs him to take the fall for her.

Major Challenge/Conflict: Jake refuses to take the fall for something he did not do. Lupe is furious and calls her mother and asks her to take care of it.

Action/Reaction: Jake takes out a second loan on the house to pay for Lupe’s defense lawyer. Jake’s MIL is doing more dark magic to make Jake take the fall for Lupe and for the Feds to pin the crimes on Jake.

Cliffhanger: Jake shows up at the FBI satellite office in whatever city this takes place in and confesses to everything. He says he put Lupe up to the whole thing and made her sign the checks differently so it couldn’t be pinned on him. It was his scheme to get back on his feet financially for the sake of his family.

    Episode 9: Innocence Lost

Hook/Intrigue: FBI doesn’t know what to make of Jake’s forced confession. They don’t want to believe their IT hero, their rock would do something like this. When questioned, his coworker corroborates Jake’s story, not because he’s under any voodoo spell, but because he is jealous of Jake and wants Jake out of the picture so he can run IT.

Main Character journey: Jake is on the course to be incarcerated for forgery tht his wife committed. His reputation is at stake. His house is divided. Lupe, MIL, and Mike are furious that their father would force Lupe to take the fall for him. Carlos knows something’s up and continues to dig deeper into the portal. He already found dirt on the boyfriend and blackmailed him with it to keep him away. Dirt TBD.

Major Challenge/Conflict: Jake forced by black magic to take the fall for Lupe. Jake is innocent.

Action/Reaction: Jake confesses to crimes he didn’t commit and stuns his colleagues. MIL and Lupe are happy. Carlos is digging up dirt on his mom while surveiling the dude in the car with his telescope. He doesn’t want to confront the guy yet, because he’s only seven steps ahead.

Cliffhanger: Jake is taken away in handcuffs.

    Episode 10: Trial by Fire

Hook/Intrigue: Jake on trial for Lupe’s crimes. MIL concocts potion to sway jury to convict Jake.

Main Character journey: Jake is going to prison for crimes his wife committed.

Major Challenge/Conflict: Jake is confused about the entire situation. Something seems amiss but he can’t figure it out. Why is he taking the fall? Didn’t he already refuse to do that? Wasn’t Lupe the one doing all the spending? Where are all the packages? Even if the spell broke today, he couldn’t prove any of it. Lupe and Mike cleared out the basement and are selling goods under an assumed name.

Action/Reaction: Jake is fired, goes to jail, and loses face with his colleagues and family.

Cliffhanger: Jake takes a plea to spare the children and Lupe and gets a reduced sentence.

    Dave’s episode description rough drafts.

What I learned: the elements that should be in such a description.

    1

Joshua Blank is a university PR writer Joshua Blank is on hand for a landmark physics experiment. But when the particle accelerator explodes, he barely survives—and the lead professor, Salva Seguir, dies. But things are different for Joshua: He’s no living in a different reality. His wonderful wife Henna and kids NAMES look the same, but they’re no longer wonderful. The same goes for people he works with. His life is upside-down, but his initial attempts to find out what happened come up empty. Worst of all, he finds out that the experiment never took place.

<div>2 Joshua starts investigating what happened by meeting with Salva, who’s still alive in this reality. As she did in the Baseline reality, she downplays the risks. Meanwhile, Joshua notices that he’s being followed by spies—one American, one Chinese. And as bad as his day plays out, it gets worse when his car blows up when he hits autostart. He spots someone fleeing the scene. Salva?</div>

    3

Joshua arrives home bruised, but the Henna in this reality is fed up with him. He’s failed as a journalist and a novelist, and she suspects he’s had affairs. He sleeps on the couch, but wakes up in yet another reality, with a nicer Henna—and his car in the driveway. At work, everyone’s walking on eggshells because Salva, bitter over not being recognized for an earlier experiment, is vindictive and manipulative. Joshua presses her for information again—it’s obvious he needs her help to get back to the blaseline (BL), but she tells him to fuck off. In the elevator, the America agent sticks a gun into Joshua’s temple and warns him not to dig too deep into the experiment.

    4

Still shaken from the American agent’s threat, Joshua is waylaid by the Chinese agent, who takes him for a ride. The agent fills Joshua in a what the experiment was supposed to prove and that reality shifting was a risk. Nobody knows how it works, though—and the two agents are competing to find out because whoever controls the technology will control the world. The Chinese agent warns Joshua not to trust the American agent. Meanwhile, the American agent is visiting with Henna in the baseline reality. When the agent leaves, Henna goes to the university—to meet with Salva.

    5

At home, Henna’s personality swings wildly as Joshua shifts between realities. In one reality, Henna and daughter are at each other’s throats. Joshua sees a chance to make an ally, though, and takes daughter to school. But as he drives off, the American agent approaches daughter. Joshua chases him—but where’s daughter? Back at home—Joshua has shifted realities again. So, he goes to work and breaks into Salva’s office to look for her notes. He finds them—but someone hits him on the head.

    6

Fred finds Joshua on the floor of Salva’s office. No notes. And Fred doesn’t know about any experiment that went bad. Sure enough, the particle accelerator isn’t even functional. The Chinese agent confront him, this time belligerently, so they fight. But when Joshua breaks free, the American agent chases him, then aims his gun at him and fires.

    7

<div>The American agent fires—but Joshua disappears as he shifts into a different reality. In this one, he sees a notice of a memorial service for him and Salva. No trace of their remains were found after the experiment meltdown, but they’re assumed dead. Daughter is outside, talking to the Chinese agent, saying she doesn’t believe Joshua is dead, she feels him close. When she leaves, Joshua attacks the agent and demands answers—but the American agent arrives to help the Chinese agent get free. “I don’t know what’s going on,” he says. The agent responds: “You don’t have to.” When he leaves Joshua sees someone else lurking. A third agent?</div><div>

    8

    </div>

This new agent—The Third Agent—drives off. Joshua follows—and the agent goes to his house. He goes into the house, but no one’s there but Henna. She’s beside herself, says she’s been hounded by cops and spies and media. Joshua calms her. They go to bed. Joshua wakes up in a new reality—next to Salva. It soon becomes clear that Salva has been behind some of the attacks to kill in (the car bomb, at least one other). “Why?” “I can’t go back to the baselines because I’m dead there—and if I can’t go back, I’ll make sure you don’t either.” She pulls out a gun and aims at his head.

    Module 2 – Lesson 5 – Episode Descriptions

What I learned from this assignment…It took me FOREVER to do this and my cliffhangers are weak right now.

    ASSIGNMENT:

    Episode 1

    • Hook/Intrigue: The reluctant, third in line, slacker Nerilla is hastily appointed Head Priestess, replacing her predecessor, Livia, who has been put to death for becoming pregnant.

    • Main Character journey: Nerilla now has to get really good at this, immediately, or she and the other Vestals could be killed.

    • Major Challenge/Conflict: In the wake of a scandal, she must restore public credibility of the Vestals and unite a divided House of Vesta.

    • Action/Reaction: She must navigate for the first time warring factions within the Severus dynasty, all wanting Nerilla to secure the god’s support for their endeavors.

    • Cliffhanger: Forced to stage her first public blessing for Emperor Severus, she has no idea what she’s doing and completely “fakes” it, throwing up afterwards.

Vestal Virgin, Nerilla, a reluctant, third in line slacker, is hastily appointed Head Priestess. Her predecessor, Livia, has been publicly put to death for violating the Vestal’s sacred vow. She is chosen over the obvious next choice, rock star Vestal, Severa. In the wake of chaos and scandal, Nerilla becomes the new face of the Vestal brand. Though truth be told, she has long doubted she has any mystical powers and has a series of botched blessings to prove it. But now, she has to get really good at this, quickly. Or else she and the other Vestals could meet a similar fate to Livia. With a skeptical public, a divided House of Vesta and warring factions within the Severus dynasty, all insisting she secure the god’s favor for their endeavors, Nerilla attempts her first public blessing before Emperor Severus and the Senate. She has no idea what she’s doing and completely “fakes” it, throwing up afterwards.

    Episode 2

    • Hook/Intrigue: Nerilla secretly is heartbroken, mourns the death of Livia and struggles to find an ally.

    • Main Character journey: Publicly and politically, she is forced enact a damnato memoria and erase all evidence of Livia, validating the government’s actions.

    • Action/Reaction: Now living in Livia’s quarters, Nerilla is haunted by the night of the miscarriage.

    • Cliffhanger: She and Livia were secretly in a romantic relationship. Highly taboo.

Under pressure from Silvius and Dios, Nerilla is forced to enact a damnato memoria, erasing all evidence that Livia ever existed. Every trace of her must be purged. She can never be mentioned again. Publicly, Nerilla validates the government’s actions to have Livia put to death. Privately, she is devastated. She watches Livia’s quarters being cleared out and stripped. She confronts Silvius about denying Livia a trial. Nerilla moves into the Head Priestess quarters. She is haunted by the night of Livia’s miscarriage, which took place in this room. There is still a faint blotch of blood on the stone floor. She and Livia were close friends who had recently begun a secret romantic relationship. Although this was highly taboo and considered “incest”, Livia was Nerilla’s life line. Without her love and support, how can Nerilla survive as Head Priestess?

    Episode 3

    • Hook/Intrigue: Nerilla is introduced to the key players of the Senate, who are struggling for power against Emperor Severus and his pro-military government.

    • Main Character journey: Thrust into the highly competitive, sexually charged, volatile world of Roman politics

    • Major Challenge/Conflict: Mourning loss of Livia – her love, protector and mentor.

    • Action/Reaction: Plautianus, pressures Nerilla to go against the Senators and Emperor Severus, who he is supposed to be supporting.

Empress Julia Domna, in attendance, conveys Emperor Severus wants to allow soldiers to become citizens and award them land. The senators argue this will cost the government money and further tip the balance of power in Severus’s favor. She stands firm. Plautianus, the Praetorian Prefect and equal to the Emperor, undermines Julia Doman in front of the Senate, flaunting his influence with the military is greater than Severus’s. Privately, Senator Dio’s reveals Emperor Severus and his pro-military government has stripped them of much of their power. Soldiers mustn’t become citizens. But Nerilla discovers Plautianus has been bribing key senators to support the Emperor. Nerilla looks to Silvius for counsel, but he is beholden to his father and the Senate. Julia Domna reveals she wasn’t fond of Livia, who was partial to Plautianus. She asks Nerilla to offer a private blessing to the Emperor for the return of his health.
