Paula’s Character Emotions
What I learned from doing this assignment is that characters have very deep layers and sometimes their wants and needs and motivations are polarized. I am very intrested in the mask/base negative emotion struggle, and their triggers and coping mechanisms. I liked the breakdown of the characters in “Billions”, one of my favorite series. It was harder to analyze my own characters, and I realized that the main male character is John, not Tony.

What I learned doing this assignment is that humans are a complex collection of mixed and sometimes contrasting emotions and needs and that what we see on the outside (Their game face) isn’t necessarily what’s going on in the inside.

What I learned doing this assignment is how to discover my characters’ internal struggles by using the Emotional Profile method. Very cool!

Eric Humble’s Character Emotions
What I learned doing this assignment is: how to create a set of emotions and potential reactions my characters can have which will make them consistent and interesting in any situation. This was a really interesting assignment in that I’ve never considered the emotions before deciding on the challenging situations to put my characters into. This approach will make it easier and more interesting to challenge their “old ways” in a transformational story, because the emotions are based mostly on the characters’s flaws and intrigue. I’m excited to see how this helps focus the process of brainstorming the challenging situations of the series and episodes!

What I learned during this assignment is that “filling in these blanks” defines the characters one already knows even more vividly. The characters become both more objectified and three dimensional.

OLIVIA:
A. Hope: Being the savior. / Fear: Loosing her reputation, defeated.
B. Want: To always help her clients / Need: Being in control, winning.
C. Base Emotion: Fear / Public Mask: protector, defender.
D. Weaknesses: Fitz, too self-sufficient.
E. Triggers: Loss of loyalty, being lied to.
F. Coping Mechanism: Withdrawal, shutdown, work, Strategize, drinking wine.
FITZ:
A. Hope: Leaving a legacy as a president. Help the people / Fear: Failing as President.
B. Want: The presidency and Olivia. / Need: True love, passion.
C. Base Emotion: Inadequate / Public Mask: Charming, politician.
D. Weaknesses: Being in love with Olivia, extramarital relationship.

EMMA:
A. Hope: Make the needed money to ransom her dad and pay back rent / Fear: Loosing her father, going into a shelter, her family finding out she’s not successful, being a looser.
B. Want: To make her family proud, “to become someone in life” to make a difference / Need: To help her family, security.
C. Base Emotion: Pain, fear, powerless, depressed, worthless / Public Mask: Cheerful, over pleasing, joyful, confident.
D. Weaknesses: Pride, past wound, obsessive, need to control.
E. Triggers: Being disrespected, being lied and underestimated, wound, trauma.
F. Coping Mechanism: Shut down, avoid, withdraws, complex math solving problems, over using her mind.
FLORA:
A. Hope: Being together with “her best friend” (who happens to be her own reflection in the mirror.)
Fear: Being alone, loosing “her best friend”

C. Base Emotion: Confusion, fear, anger / Public Mask: Loving, caring, joyful, happy, youthful, playful.
D. Weaknesses: Powerless, brain illness, faulty short and long term memory, cognitive dysfunction.
E. Triggers: Her past, mistreatment, being left alone.
F. Coping Mechanism: Crying, anger, lashing out at people, talking to her “best friend” in the mirror.
ISAAC:
A. Hope: To be the sole heir / Fear: To loose his inheritance, his place in society, being poor, powerless.
B. Want: To get rid of Flora / Need: Power, love, acceptance.
C. Base Emotion: Rejected, pain, unloved, Weak / Public Mask: Confident, powerful, positive, charming.
D. Weaknesses: Wound, pain.
E. Triggers: Being rejected, under appreciated.

What I learned doing this assignment is that asking questions about emotions of characters gives much more light on them than just listing their character traits.

Madeline: justice for son of her new friend / being loved and accepted

Arcadia: Revenge on her daughter/ sweet grandma

Chris: can’t keep his mouth shut, relates everything to himself

Arcadia: that she has got her clinic only through her forth marriage after cheating on first three husbands
Chris: his love to Monica
Eve: that her carrier was more important to her than everything else and that she suffers a lot about Mathew infidelity
Matthew: that he is dependent on his wife and has not achieved much on his own

Arcadia: fights back, intrigues, gets advices from friends, gets more motivation
Chris: shuts down, blames himself,
Eve: strategises, threatens people,
Matthew: distorts, covers up, pretends it is not a big deal
