June Fortunato’s Retirement Character Chemistry. Day 6 of seducing actors What I learned: Good chart exercise.
Top 5 characters: Roy, Kim, Suzy, Marilyn, Brian/Ingrid
1) Roy & Suzy- Protagonist/Antagonist-Ally
A. Common ground- shared a relationship- he made her laugh and to feel needed, he needed a warm place and warm heart. B. Differences- Roy is a mooch and Suzy got tired of disappointments and carrying his butt C. Playing the same game/competing agendas- Suzy has to get Roy out of her life so that means settled elsewhere. Roy has to get settled but forget about with Suzy! D. Need fulfillment-Roy was able to lift Suzy’s spirits and Suzy fed and housed Roy.
2) Roy & Kim- Protagonist/Antagonist-Ally
A. Common ground- both are running, both live rough, both are afraid to confront the past- deep mutual understanding. B. Differences- Roy cannot forgive himself. Kim cannot forgive her brother. If Roy can learn to forgive himself, Kim can learn to forgive her brother. C. Playing the same game/competing agendas- They play the same game but Roy wants to do it together and Kim wants to do it alone. D. Need fulfillment- each has a strength when the other is weak. Kim is soothing. Roy is strong for her and they’re both fun.
3) Kim & Brian/Ingrid- Protagonist/Antagonists
A. Common ground- brother and sister, they grew up together, they both inherited the family house. B. Differences- Brian married Ingrid who wants Kim out and Brian is a wimp who does what Ingrid demands. Kim is appalled at the rejection and betrayal and abandonment and wants her due but especially, for Brian to admit and tell her why. C. Playing the same game/competing agendas- It’s about the estate. It’s about who’s in control. D. Need fulfillment- Both characters have similar needs/goals and compete for them.
4) Suzy and Marilyn – Protagonist/ supporting character A. Common ground- both in the osteo unit and both devoted to the health of the patient(s) B. Differences- Suzy is the nurse and Marilyn is the patient- but both have needs that each other can fill. C. Playing the same game/competing agendas- Get Marilyn’s pets and house taken care of and get Roy out of Suzy’s personal relationship. D. Need Fulfillment- Suzy needs Roy settled and Marilyn needs to be settled.

Anna Harper Chemistry
What I learned from this assignment; I think this has the potential to amp up the drama in my script as I can now seek ways to make the tension in the relationships more evident.
Dylan Protagonist
Miss Elizabeth Perkins Antagonist
Playing the same game Competition for Steve, Competition for change (Elizabeth wants Dylan to leave and have Steve) and no change Dylan wants to stay silent and stay put and not share his Dad with Elizabeth.
Dylan Protagonist
Steve Connecting Character
Elizabeth Antagonist
Common ground All three are lonely and have needs for belonging and love.
Differences that cause conflict. Their values are different as they may all want the same thing yet come from a different place in that wanting. Dylan is genuinely lonely/isolated and loves his Dad who is somewhat overwhelmed and distracted and unable to understand how Dylan needs his Father’s love to be expressed. Elizabeth wants a man to love her she is a narcissist and needs the public /community understanding that she has the status of a woman in a committed relationship. Steve is also lonely and needs companionship, love, and support from a harmonious partner, and is probably capable of reciprocating.
Elizabeth Antagonist
Steve Connecting Character
Dylan Protagonist
Playing the same game Steve is the prize here and he knows it. He is ambivalent about Elizabeth and this manifests dramatically when Steve is forced to chose. Dylan eventually provides his Dad with his need for Dylan to speak again., a gradual return to normalcy and subtly indicates his approval of a new romantic interest for his Dad.
Dylan Protagonist
Alfie Supporting character
Need Fulfilment
Dylan feels isolated and needs friends yet repels them at the same time. He needs someone else to champion him. Like a grandparent. There is no one else. Until Alfie shows up. Dylan is very insecure, despite having a loving father. He needs security, understanding, acceptance, and encouragement.
Alfie needs security also. He needs to be loved and have a committed relationship with a family that will care for him. He has a gift that he wants to share.
Alfie and Dylan become a team in solving Dylan’s problems and resolving his challenges.
Dylan and steve provide Alfie with appreciation and a forever home.
Elizabeth Antagonist
School Principal Supporting Character
Need Fulfilment
Differences that cause conflict
Elizabeth and the Principal want to maintain low disruption and control in the school.
The Principal supports Elizabeth’s decision regarding the boarding school.
Conflict arises when the Principal is made aware of his staff member Elizabeth being a bully and inappropriate with the students, and duping him into sending Dylan away. All causing loss of community approval for his stewardship of the school.

Matthew Frendo’s Character Chemistry
What I learned doing this assignment was how to find different areas of chemistry between characters before writing. This will give my characters more depth and make it a more compelling script.
Alicia/The Host –
similarities: both well educated, (both lost loved ones to violence?…just thought of this, could be a breakthrough)
differences: he wants power and she wants equality/freedom, she’s about truth and integrity and he’s about showboating and false fronts
playing game/competing agendas – she wants to beat his game and he will do anything to stop her, he wants crowd to love him and crowd starts loving her more, competing on who is craftiest
need fulfillment: she needs strength to stand on her own and he needs control to keep others dependent on him
Alicia/Audience –
similarities: all have struggled in the face of some adversity, share hopes and dreams
differences: they consider her evil and immoral and think she victimized them and should pay for it while she sees herself as their victim,
playing game: they play against her at first then slowly turn to her side,
need fulfillment: she needs to feel supported, they need to feel inspired
The Host/Audience
similarities: both want justice done and love a good show
differences: he wants them to be pacified to keep them in line and they want safety
playing game: he wants them on his side, but they start to change partway through, making him go to greater efforts to keep their love and attention
need fulfillment: they need to feel safe and secure and he needs them to love and follow him
Alicia/Nick –
similarities: both have family members screwed by system, both lived in same neighborhood
differences: he’s about strength and she’s about craftiness, she’s about working together to all live and he’s about doing it all alone to win for himself
playing game/competing agenda – both vie for the right way to play the challenges with the others, both get deals from host and play it differently
need fulfillment: both need acceptance but both look in different (and wrong) places
The Host/Nick
similarities: both have ruthless trait
differences: host is rich and nick is poor
playing game: nick wants to win and host wants them all to die
need fulfillment: host needs power and nick needs to stand up and be a hero
Alicia/Chester –
similarities: both good people, she reminds him of his granddaughter
differences: he’s more violent and she’s more crafty
playing game: play together, until she makes a mistake that leads to his death
need fulfillment: he needs to protect to feel useful and she needs to be protected to feel like she matters
The Host/Chester
similarities: both violent, strong men who stand up for what they believe in
differences: Chester believes in freedom and love while Host believes in power and fear
playing game: Chester wants to win and help others win and Host wants them all to die
need fulfillment: Chester needs to stand for something and Host wants no one to stand for anything

DEV ROSS – Character Chemistry
What I learned from doing this lesson is about the nuance of character, those things that not only make a character attractive to a potential actor but nuances that make the character become truly three dimensional and human. I’ve always thought of chemistry as something found between actors, I never realized that it can be enhanced by writing it in!
1. Clay/Lincoln
2. Clay/Hannah
3. Clay/Elijah
4. Clay/Emmy
5. Lincoln/Nubia
Common Ground: Clay and Lincoln
1. Clay and Lincoln are each respected leaders of two very separate groups
2. Clay and Lincoln are both married but are in tense marital situations.
3. Both men carry deeply rooted chips on their shoulders.
4. Both men are passionate, brave, and committed.
5. Both men yearn for a societal change
6. Both men are ‘failed’ artists
Common Ground: Clay and Hannah
1. Went to high school together
2. Married to have their baby
3. Base the way they live on established traditions
Common Ground: Clay and Elijah
1. Both abused by fathers
2. Both needed a mentor
3. Both become fatherless
Common Ground: Clay and Emmy
1. Want each others love and respect
Common Ground: Lincoln and Nubia
1. Both yearn for a child
2. Find each other very sexually attractive
3. Respect each other’s smarts and talents
Differences that Create Conflict:
Clay and Lincoln
1. Clay is jealous of Lincoln’s power
2. Lincoln lives in fear of Clay
Clay and Hannah
1. Hannah hates Clay’s hate
2. Clay is annoyed and uncomfortable by Hannah’s needy sexuality
Clay and Elijah
1. Clay hates that he feels for Elijah
2. Elijah wants Clay to love him

2. He can’t give it.
Lincoln and Nubia
1. Nubia wants Lincoln to give up his leadership
2. Lincoln wants her to understand his need for change and leadership
Playing the Same Game:
1. Lincoln and Clay are playing exactly the same game in working for power and then trying to kill each other. Both of their needs are based in doing what’s best for their people and country.
Need Fulfilment:
1. Clay and Hannah – Clay has need for respect. Hannah has need for his love and family.
2. Clay and Elijah – Both have need for a father’s love
3. Clay and Emmy – Both need love but can’t get it from the other.
4. Lincoln and Nubia – both want a family and for each to be fulfilled.

Cameron Martin’s Character Chemistry
What I learned from doing this assignment is…How to think about the dimensions that characters can interact in. I know from an acting standpoint chemistry is a big deal, but I never knew how to communicate it through writing. Like with structure before I started studying it, I would sometimes luck upon it in other writing projects. But this is a big help to start having more of a say as to how to equip my character interactions with chemistry. The other thing I noticed when watching HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON was how chemistry between characters can carry a theme and similar motifs. Hiccup is the only one in his village that isn’t possessed with the idea of killing dragons, and his feebleness reflects this. Meanwhile, a number of the characters challenge him in different ways with the question, “Who’s side are you on?” Hiccup and his dad carry much of the conflict, but Astrid provides a different angle while carrying the conflict between father and son for much of the second act when Stoick isn’t around. The main differences between Astrid and Stoick is that Astrid serves as both a rival and love interest, while Stoick is clearly the father whose approval is sought after. In addition, Gobber serves as more of a supportive mentor role, not only feeding the characters and audience information about the dragons, but also teaching Hiccup about blacksmithing. However, Gobber’s friendship with Stoick balances the relationship he has with Hiccup, in that he’s prevented from being a stale, purely supportive character by presenting many of Stoick’s complaints to Hiccup as well. Therefore, what Gobber gives is the ear that Hiccup needs from his dad, while also standing in the way as a trusted ally to carry Hiccup’s secret about Toothless. The way these four characters interact gives us a variety of the same argument (theme) by challenging Hiccup in different ways, while also allowing Hiccup to bounce off of them in different ways as well; Hiccup can’t talk to his dad like he can talk to Gobber, and Hiccup shouldn’t talk to his dad like he might with Astrid, his love interest. All three characters present the “Us vs. Them” argument, with Hiccup having to choose between Dragons (his self confidence) or his Dad’s approval and Astrid’s love (the confidence others give him). In the end, he gets both only through having confidence in himself (his dragons).
OPEN WIDE
Characters:
1. Sully
2. Isaiah
3. Markus
4. Jude
5. Apollo
Relationships:
Protagonist/Antagonist –
Sully & Isaiah. While not a traditional Protagonist/Antagonist relationship in the sense of enemies, they do compete for the goal of control. Sully wants Isaiah out of the way as much as possible, as much of a non-factor as possible, while Isaiah wants to be a part of the discussion and viewed as an equal.
A. Common ground / similarities – The two are father and son. The story hints that both are, to some degree, on the autism spectrum. They’re both experts in a given area (Sully:tools, Isaiah:worms), both have a deep understanding of the space colony compound due to their knowledge in a given area
B. Differences that create conflict – Sully is the father, while Isaiah is his child. Isaiah is fascinated by the aliens, while Sully is disgusted with them. Whether Sully is on the autism spectrum or not, Isaiah is “lower functioning” than Sully is.
C. Playing the same game / Competing Agendas – N/A
D. Need fulfillment – Sully fulfills Isaiah’s need to be understood, while Isaiah fulfills Sully’s need for love.
Protagonist/Connecting Character (connecting them and the antagonist) – N/A
Antagonist/Connecting Character (connecting them and the protagonist) – N/A
Protagonist/Supporting Character 1 –
Sully & Jude. Jude represents two different functions. First is the maternal need that Isaiah desperately needs, and what Sully struggles to provide.
A. Common ground / similarities – They both have kids.
B. Differences that create conflict – Jude is more interested in Isaiah and gives him the understanding he needs, while Sully is focused on just getting out alive.
C. Playing the same game / Competing Agendas – Jude wants to keep herself and Sully out of the bunker, while Sully wants to find a way inside the bunker.
D. Need fulfillment – N/A
Antagonist/Supporting Character 1 –
Isaiah & Jude. Second is her connection to and impact on the colony as a spy sent to cover up the Hegemony’s involvement with the worms. Her efforts prior to the events of the narrative make her as much an expert on the worms as Isaiah.
A. Common ground / similarities – Both have an above average understanding of the worms.
B. Differences that create conflict – N/A
C. Playing the same game / Competing Agendas – Isaiah wants to know more about the worms from Jude, while Jude wants to know how much Isaiah knows and whether it leads back to the Hegemony.
D. Need fulfillment – Jude gives Isaiah the understanding he craves from his father, while Isaiah gives Jude her chance to “redeem” herself.
Secondary Protagonist/Supporting Character 2 –
Markus & Apollo.
A. Common ground / similarities – Both grew up in the same city on earth. Both are trying to find a new life in the space colonies.
B. Differences that create conflict – Apollo wants to join in a mutiny, while Markus wants to find an escape.
C. Playing the same game / Competing Agendas – N/A
D. Need fulfillment – N/A

Alice’s Character Chemistry
What have I learned from this assignment?
I enjoyed assignment. I only am awkward that I cannot give correct relationships of Antagonist versus Protagonist. Though in a second part, LENA is in way antagonist of her lovers, they suffer because of her.
I listed my part one Antagonist separately

Thanakh and Officer who contacts him. They happen to be both of the same social caste. Both are transformants. (Therefore honest, hard workers, have understanding)
B. Differences that create conflict.
Thanakh and Director. Also Thanakh and other RI workers. They have different perspectives.
C. Playing the same game / Competing Agendas
Thanakh and Otak, journalist. They are on the same game, however Otak though bright is a bit ignorant, or is ambitious, but without grounds.
D. Need fulfillment
Thanakh and Kiat. They love each other, and support. They are soulmates. Type B. Each fulfills other’s “weaknesses”

Anita Gomez – Character Chemistry (Day 6)
What have I learned from this assignment:
Compare your top five characters and discover what gives each of their relationships chemistry.
1. List your character names/roles as couples.
Protagonist/Antagonist: Danica / Cyrus
Protagonist/Connecting Character: Danica / Dianna
Antagonist/Connecting Character: Cyrus / Dianna
Protagonist/Supporting Character 1: Dianna / sister Rebecca
Antagonist/Supporting Character 2: Cyrus / his wife
2. Try to express each relationship on as many of these four levels as you can:
A. Common ground / similarities:
Danica / Cyrus – Both are highly ambitious career-driven A-type achievers.
Danica / Dianna – Both are beautiful and highly intelligent. Both are self-centered.
Cyrus / Dianna – Both are intelligent and driven in their own ways
Dianna / Rebecca – Sisters with a common religious upbringing
Cyrus / Wife – They both love material wealth and creature comforts
B. Differences that create conflict:
Danica / Cyrus – She does not want to be tied down by a family or kids. His family is taken care of by his wife and often used as a political ‘prop’
Danica / Dianna – Danica is a lawyer who sees things in black and white (moral center); Dianna has no moral center at all (amoral)
Cyrus / Dianna – He is an extrovert who craves power and adulation; She is a loner and anti-social.
Dianna / Rebecca – Dianna is no longer bound by church doctrine. Her sister remains steeped in a conservative mind-set. Danica wants no children, whereas husband and children are everything for Rebecca.
Cyrus / Wife – He is a narcissist / she wants the material benefits of his career, but shuns public attention
C. Playing the same game / Competing Agendas:
Danica / Cyrus – Both ambitious and career-driven, but Cyrus is above the consequences of his actions (an affair) and Danica has to deal with those consequences (a pregnancy) or give up the one thing she wants – a successful career.
Danica / Dianna – When Danica decides she needs to find and connect with her lost daughter her motives are muddy (is it for a relationship, or a needed kidney transplant?). Dianna’s motives in connecting with her mother are also muddy (she is incapable of relationships so she views her mother as just another genetic experiment – orchestrating her biological father’s death so Danica can get his kidney)
Cyrus / Dianna – He is oblivious to Dianna’s very existence / She has no feelings for him and only vies him as a clinical subject
Dianna / Rebecca – Dainna wants an abortion / Rebecca is appalled at the idea and pleads with her sister not to do it
Cyrus / Wife – They play the same game – propping up his career for gain (he gains power and recognition / the wife gains the benefits of his wealth) so they both play the same game of projecting the appearance of a perfect family.
D. Need fulfillment:
Danica / Cyrus – They have an affair – both for convenience and sex, and neither wanting anything more
Danica / Dianna – She doesn’t want a child, so giving Dianna up at birth fulfills the need to remain unencumbered, and not having an abortion fulfills her lingering religious beliefs. Later Danica thinks Dianna will fulfill her need for a new kidney. Dainna wants nothing more than a curiosity fulfilled from meeting her biological mother
Cyrus / Dianna – neither needs or wants anything from the other… quite the opposite
Dianna / Rebecca – Rebecca and her family is the only family Danica has and they fulfill her subliminal need for one of her own
Cyrus / Wife – Cyrus needs his wife and family as ‘props’ and the wife needs his salary to fulfill her sense of status

Lisa’s Character Chemistry
“What have I learned from this assignment?” is that relationships are the building blocks for the dialogue. If you know your characters relationships than it is easier to write those relationships into the scenes and thus enhance the story.
Mary Winters/Peter Winters – They were high school sweethearts. They have two daughters together and lived through his war deployment. They argue over his issues and how to raise the kids. When Peter jumped off the George Bailey bridge 3 years ago, Mary was done and filed for divorce.
Mary Winters/Joseph Bishop – they work together at the winery, they have dated on and off for 2 years, Joseph has tried several times to ask Mary to marry him, but she always shuts him down. Joseph is a wealthy fellow from NYC and Mary is a small-town girl.
Mary Winters/Violet – Mary and Violet have been rivals since kindergarten. They’ve been competitive with each other all these years. Mary was the clever, book smart one and Violet the beautiful athlete. Both overachievers who can’t see their world with the other in it.
Mary Winters/Annie Lee – Mary and Annie are best friends. Annie was a fish out of water in a town with few Asians and Mary befriended her in elementary school. They tell each other everything. They rarely fight.
Peter Winters/Tilly – Peter and Tilly met a little over year ago at Martini’s Bar. Peter looking for someone to help him forget his past. Tilly moved to Seneca Falls after a nasty break-up, so was also looking to forget. They bonded over their sad pasts. Tilly tries hard to make it work…she wants Peter to try as hard, so they butt heads.
Peter Winters/Santa Claus – Peter was raised by a single mom and was always disappointed come Christmas time when his dad didn’t show up. Santa remembers Peter as a child, and he’ll never give up on Peter. Peter and Santa met years ago when Peter worked for NORAD, prior to being deployed. Peter had been assigned to check out the safety of Santa at the North Pole. Peter was all business when they met then, and Santa continually tried to disarm him…to no avail.
