Sunil Pappu’s Action Structure!
“What I learned doing this assignment is… to identify the structure points for my story using the three tracks and also identify the major turning points for the story to fit into the genre conventions.”
3-ACT STRUCTURE:
1. Opening: An illegal fight club inside the prison pits Svetlana against a giant inmate with seemingly good odds of a win. An Israeli fighter roots for Svetlana, the underdog, and she beats her opponent using Israeli martial arts Krav Maga and leaves him close to death. The Israeli fighter takes all the winnings to her in the form of prison supplies, and she picks up an American peanut butter jar and eats a handful. He warns her to watch what she eats before practice the next day.
2. Inciting Incident: The prison guards who lost their bets decide to teach her a lesson and put her in restraints, and interrogate her to find out who she really is. She breaks out of her restraints and chokes them to death. She is caught on the CCTV camera. KGB agent alerts KGB Commander Mikhail of a possible facial recognition match to a defected dead agent.
3. Act 1 Turning Point: An inmate takes a hit contract put out by the KGB Commander for Svetlana and get even with her for his humiliating defeat in the prison fight club. He tries to rape her but is brutally killed instead. The Israeli fighter gives her a postcard that has just arrived and tells her: “Time to go?” She puts her carefully thought-out plan into action. She gets to a vantage point with a sniper rifle and takes out all the guards. She flips the postcard and examines it under a flame to read coordinates in magic ink and enters them into the computer at the guard station to see the target location of a missile silo. She saves the Israeli fighter and traps the prison inmates in the fight arena and escapes off into the woods.
4. Mid-Point: An Ex-military sniper saves her and joins her to team up against the KGB assassins. KGB commander knows she has been activated to stop him and wants her dead.
5. Crisis/Dilemma: One of the snipers goes after the Ex-military sniper and captures him. Mikhail beats him and lets Svetlana hear him kill the rescue dog (the one that helped save Svetlana).
6. Act 2 Turning Point: Svetlana is captured and tortured, and the missile launch is initiated.
7. Climax: Svetlana breaks out of her restraints to kill the agents guarding her and takes on the Commander in an ultimate hand-to-hand combat. She changes the missile target just in time to implode the missile silo on itself.
8. Resolution: She rushes to save her partner in the woods whose been kept barely alive. The other missile launch sites have all been deactivated as well, and Russia is sanctioned heavily by NATO. Even China condemns its actions of starting a nuclear war and signs on the UN Treaty for the Prohibition of nuclear weapons.

What I learned during this assignment is that I still have many questions about my own structure and plot points so I think more work is needed to resolve and elevate. What I have so far is
Step Out Of The Shadows
• Opening 1 to 4 pages: Rachel Gilroy, elite CIA sniper, is ambushed by Chinese snipers during an intelligence meeting with the CIA’s Russian Informant, Serge Ivanov.
• Inciting Incident 10 to 15 pages: Serge Ivanov is left for dead by his boss Natalia Volkova, but before he dies he tells Rachel she must protect a Dr. Steel.
• First Turning Point at end of Act 1 – when she’s chastised for shooting at her father when he turned up at her meeting with Ivanov, her boss, CIA Director Susan Green, also tells her that her father is being investigated for treason. Green wants her to put personal grievances with her father aside and find out why he was at the meeting.
• Mid-Point: A Mark Taylor steals a deadly virus from a local laboratory.
• Second Turning Point at end of Act 2 –– Rachel is now dying having been infected with the virus and has only 1 hour to live.
• Crisis: Rachel has to decide whether to risk Dr. Steel’s life to take out Mark and regain control of the helicopter. Mark throws Rachel from the helicopter.
• Climax: Rachel swims to the yacht in search of her parents and the antivirals that will save her life.
• Resolution: Rachel saves her parents lives, takes out Nick, and finally gets an answer to why her father disrupted her meeting.
But there’s a twist…

INCITING INCIDENT
A plane carrying the President and other politicians is shot down.
FIRST TURNING POINT (END OF ACT 1)

MID-POINT
A mass killing of Mahenga men takes place. Janine gets photographic evidence. General Resnik declares himself sole leader of the country.
SECOND TURNING POINT (END OF ACT 2)
Janine gets proof of the planned coup and the genocide out to the world. She is captured.
CRISIS
Janine is held by General Resnik and Damir his henchmen. (She needs to be pushed for some secret.) A full scale attack begins against the Mahenga stronghold.
CLIMAX
International peacekeeping forces invade ____ and stop the genocide.
RESOLUTION

Danielle LEGRAND’s ACTION STRUCTURE
What I learned during this assignement is seeing more clearly the sequence of events.
1.OPENING :
TOM’s day organizing the President’s daily activities. We can see he has important tasks in hand and he is the closest person to the President. Each presidential day is rythmed at a steady tempo by him. On the other hand, PAMELA the PRESIDENT’s wife appears as a modern sportive young woman (ex. karate champion) and also as a romantic one who would appreciate more privacy with her husband.
2. INCITING MOMENT :
The nurse who comes and vaccinates the PRESIDENT according to schedule has been secretly switched with a VILLAIN’s accomplice. First she has killed the real nurse, then she inoculates the hero with a timing poison. To get the antidote the VILLAIN wants him to do something which would start a war with CHINA.
3. FIRST TURNING POINT AT THE END OF ACT 1 :
The PRESIDENT decides to trick the VILLAIN and flee (hidden in a laundry van) to get some help without compromising the scientist who could find the antidote. He has to change his clothes and his general appearance. He becomes an ordinary citizen with a gigantic problem to solve.
4. MIDPOINT :
The President understands he has to solve his problems on his own.He has to find who his opponents are without overlooking a search for the antidote as soon as possible. The Russian Mobis after him. PAMELA suspects something wrong is happening. She does a little private investigation and she understands her husband is in trouble. She is ready to make anything to find what is going on.
5. SECOND TURNING POINT :
THE SCIENTIST is lacking a rare component for making the antidote. The President becomes weaker and weaker and has trouble escaping detection from the Mob after him.
6. CRISIS/ DILEMMA :
The hero is caught by the villains who want to force him into starting a war. He is beaten and tortured but he does not give up. He knows he is going to die
7.
CLIMAX :
PAMELA has found clues which lead her to the VILLAINS. The SCIENTIST has managed to get in touch with her since he has been successful making a specific antidote. They break into the criminals‘ den.
These ones get a good thrashing by the FIRST LADY who is still well trained in karate. In the meantime the scientist saves the hero and the C.I.A. remand them in custody before sending them to a Chinese prison.
8. RESOLUTION :
We learn the Presidential couple always has had their secret codes and connections which have proved to be very useful in such a situation. As they receive the Queen of England they share funny moments of complicity as they can see Her Majesty has also her personal secret codes.

Action Structure!
I learned to stay in the question about my first ideas – over and over. And calling myself names is not among the strategies that will assist to help
Create the 3-Act structure for your story.
1. Look through your three tracks (Mission, Villain, and Action) and find the points that could work for this structure.
Opening: <div>
Kitty races through the world of codes and numbers, the final competion who get’s the 5 jobs as highly paid white hats for the Malta casino conglomerate. (Her normal life). Kitty is among the five winners, next day a relocation agent will touch base and show her around et al. Kitty and the other 4 decide to celebrate at mutual dinner. Beach Club dinner and party;
Inciting Incident:
<div><div>
2. Kitty wants to go home, allows to be talked into one last drink (this decision will change her life(beginning)). A sudden shooting in the club leads to a panic, leads to Kitty wakes up next morning on a rock above the sea and is tattooed with a color- and beautiful lizard that vibrates when she looks at it. </div><div>First Turning Point at end of Act 1:
3. Kitty finds the bar where she was drugged and learns from Petrus that she has one of three parts of a magic tattoo and that she has ten days to unite the tattoos otherwise it will start to dissolve and kill her </div><div>
Mid-Point :
4. Second call from DARK while she is with Petrus and Paul in the hospital, who explains that she got no chance – It’s not the ten days only but everything he will send her way, goons, bribe police, infiltrate her company, kill everyone around her. Petrus advise: it s not about the money and brain only, she should accept to listen to the energy of the lizard. Then she will be able to go into the zone and solve the riddle. </div><div>
Second Turning Point at end of Act 2:
5. DARKs right hand man Georgie enters the police station gets hold of Kitty, kills Lusare, and wounds Paul on his way out. DARK sends a pic to Kitty’s phone where she can see that Dark has already transplanted one Tattoo to his chest. Her Tattoo goes dark.) </div><div>
Crisis :
6. the head of IT of the casino company makes a statement, either to show up for the „leisure“ life of her white hat challenge or let go of the job (her goal) ./.(need to fight for justice)
Climax:
7. Kitty fights through the HQ of DARK, finishes Georgie then DARK, Dark knows she may not kill him either. Kitty ties the three off them together, let the tattoo decide </div><div>Resolution
8. Returning to Malta another algorithm of Kitty has practically „robbed“ the casino without the four white hats even realizing and she therefore has won the round as white hat as well. Stepping out of the companies door, Paul and Petrus are waiting for her. Kitty shows that both of wrist are covered with tattoo, and the tattoo “smiles”.

Nick’s Action Structure
What I learned: Structure is essential to hit the key plot points at the right time, then the rest is filling in with interesting stuff.
ACTION STRUCTURE
Opening: Juan is in a firefight with a group of Taliban in Afghanistan. He goes face to face with two Taliban with knives and kills them. Juan knows martial arts beyond military training and is good at it. He grabs up a crying baby in the road as he runs for safety and is blown up to end scene.
—Next scene: He arrives home without legs and is bitter about it—feels like half a man.
Question: Who am I now? We wonder: Will he get over his bitterness and adapt to a life wearing prostheses?
Inciting Incident: Confrontation at rural gas pump. Skinheads molest them. Juan uses his prosthesis to strike Mankill and Mankill threatens to shot him. The Sheriff breaks it up. Mankill threatens to kill them when he is forced by the sheriff to leave. This tells us that we are going to see him and his gang again in the future somehow.
First Turning Point at end of Act 1: While camping down the long, wooded lane from a rural farmhouse, they hear the thunder of Harleys rolling up to the farmhouse. They get out of their tent and look off. Mankill and his skinheads have blocked their escape with motorcycles. They are trapped and certain to be killed when Mankill learns they are there.
Mid-Point: Juan and Emilio discover that Mama is the de facto leader of the skinheads and that, apparently their only source of protein is from dark tourists and, in a pinch, funeral home cadavers, which they render in the barn. They could be next.
Second Turning Point at end of Act 2: Juan and Emilio escape in the SUV, but run out of gas and Emilio is captured by Mankill and taken back to the farm. Juan is hunted, but gets away. At this point, he could either dodge the skinheads searching the swamp for him and possibly make it to the main road and get help, or crawl back to the farm and somehow save Emilio. He chooses the latter.
Crisis: Juan crawls under a spring-toothed cultivator and hides as skinheads wander around it looking for him. With the wives and Emilio gone, and no legs to do anything to save them or himself, he sinks into hopeless despair. Then he gets a crazy idea: Make bladed legs from the cultivator tines. Weaponize them.
Climax: Juan and Emilio go into an action-packed showdown in the barn employing the skinheads’ torture implements, a motorcycle/motorcycle chase scenes, culminating in Mankill getting blown up.
Resolution: They get picked up by the same sheriff who saved them in the beginning. Juan now loves his legs, feels like a man again. Last image on screen: Mankill’s angry, burned head rises out of the swamp.

Laura Woodworth’s Action Structure!
What I learned doing this assignment is to make sure the inciting incident is irreversible and that the Act 1 Turning point is truly a point of no return for my hero – and that both of those are clear to my audience. This solidified my structure and gave me insight in revising my current script. Also, I appreciated the teaching and focus on 3-Act structure.
Create the 3-Act Structure for your story:
1. Look through your three tracks (Mission, Villain, and Action) and find the points that could work for this structure.
1. Opening: Opening image is the bus crash; Rachel senses something is wrong but doesn’t grasp what it is – until she sees the deadly “accident” reported on the evening news and realizes her vision was a prophetic premonition. In the meantime, she prays for a young man Luke and sees a miraculous intervention as her prayers are answered and we realize she has a “super power” of sorts (unique talent) in her prayer life.
Question: Who is Rachel – what is God revealing to her and why?
2. Inciting Incident: “What inciting incident is strong enough to send the hero on the journey?” I must be irreversible.
Rachel “sees” the bridge collapse but passes it off as a crazy idea in her head – until she watches horrified as the catastrophe is reported on live television. She realized God tried to warn her but she didn’t listen and now lives are lost – again. She can’t ignore the prophetic visions any longer. She begins the journey of listening, obedience and prayer: her journey to cooperate with what God is showing her and use her “super power” of prayer to stop the evil.
3. First Turning Point at End of Act 1 – point of no return. What locks her into the story?
Acting on the prompting of God in her spirit, Rachel prays for Philadelphia and the evil she senses is about to happen. She goes to a new and deeper level of spiritual warfare prayers against what she senses is about to happen. When a suicide bomb attack is thwarted in the Philadelphia subway system, she realizes it was a direct result of her prayers. She has seen her prayers answered in a big way, beyond her normal realm of life. Evil has been thwarted, countless lives saved, and she is resolved to pray when God says pray!
4. Midpoint: some kind of twist changes the meaning of the story. The journey is the same, but the purpose or meaning has changed.
Sick with food poisoning, Rachel doesn’t pray for the next city that God has shown her. She wakes up to the news that Chicago has been hit: a deadly terrorist act on a crowded bus. The weightiness of the situation increases and she realizes that this isn’t just a one-off situation; there is an evil army force instigating these attacks and her thought that they are all connected is confirmed. This has become a matter of life or death for her and she is willing to risk all to stop this evil. She takes action.
5. Second Turning Point at end of Act 2: Usually this is the point where the Hero’s plan has failed. All hope is lost, the hero feels defeated. The hero has to change to achieve her goal. They have to accept something about themselves or accept that their way of doing things just won’t work anymore.
After the Chicago incident, Rachel’s desperation has driven her to desperate action to warn who she can of the evil planned before it happens. She has come under the radar of the FBI (and Pharoan) and they haul her in as a suspect with no one believing her story of God’s prophetic warnings. Evan’s work career and their marriage is on the line. All hope is lost. She has to change her tactic to achiever her goal. Her way of doing things just won’t work anymore.
6. Crisis/Dilemma: Hero has to make a very tough decision often where she loses something either way.
Shown the big attack that is coming, Rachel must make a tough and dangerous decision. She loses something either way; her life/marriage – or others’ lives. Knowing that the villain is tracking her, she decides to allow herself to be kidnapped by them with a plan to lead the FBI directly to them.
7. Climax: the hero and villain come face to face for the showdown and there will be only one winner.
Rachel is captured by Vegard and tortured for information, even while the multiple hospital attacks are in motion. But – her plan works. Evan and the FBI figure out her scribbled notes in her prayer journal and take action to search hospitals and locate the bombs. They locate Rachel and once all the bombs are disarmed, attack and save her, killing Vegard and, in their minds gaining victory. But —-
Twist: They missed a bomb! The Children’s Mercy Hospital where friends Brian and Lisa are at with their new baby. The FBI and Evan and Rachel race to find and disarm the last hidden bomb – seconds before it explodes! The hospital is saved. They have won.
8. Resolution: The resolution gives us an answer to the question that the inciting incident asked. It tells us how this conflict has been resolved.
Question: Who is Rachel – what is God revealing to her and why?
Rachel’s prophetic visions have been verified and the villain behind the attacks defeated. Her guilt resolved, her reputation cleared, her friends and their child saved, her marriage recovered.
Denouement: The bird commits an “honor” suicide; Vegard slinks off. Rachel is back in church with Evan, friendships restored. They join in on the ceremony to dedicate Brian and Lisa’s baby to the Lord, lifted up with the words, “This child is yours,” which brings a satisfying ending and yet sets the stage for what’s next. A sequel…

Tom’s Action Structure

When his partner Peter is overcome with fumes and passes out, Jeff tries to rescue him, but fails when his suit catches fire and he himself must be rescued. Inciting Incident: At 497-7, PTS maintenance crewman Larry Powell, performing routine missile maintenance, drops a socket which bounces off the ground and punctures the skin of the missile, releasing propellant gases into the silo.
First Turning Point at end of Act: Colonel Moser, base commander, orders the base evacuated and the silo sealed. Jeff protests loudly.
Mid-Point: SAC commands Colonel Moser to reopen the silo and attempt to stop the leak. Now they must crack open the 700 ton solid stainless steel blast doors using hydraulic jacks. Kennedy is forbidden from entering. The team fails to stop the leak.
Second Turning Point at end of Act 2: Kennedy sneaks in and gets a vapor reading. Col. Moser sends MPs to arrest Kennedy, but he fights them all off and escapes.
Crisis: Livingston is ordered into the silo to turn on the air vent. Kennedy, risking court martial and perhaps even death, changes place with another airman, sneaks in with Livingston to try to de-activate the H bomb mechanism.
Climax: The missile explodes! Livingston is killed by the blast. Kennedy survives. The air force finds the warhead in a ditch. Kennedy’s solution worked!
Resolution: Livingson and Kennedy are awarded distinguished service crosses. Moser is promoted to Brigadier General.

ASSIGNMENT:
Create the 3-Act structure for your story.
1. Look through your three tracks (Mission, Villain, and Action) and find the points that could work for this structure.
1 OpeningNick plays in a high school football game in West Texas. Well he say benchwarmer on the team, he knows a lot about lightning and conductivity. While not playing, he watches the weather and tells the coach that they better vacate the field is the storm is coming. The coach makes one of him tells him to leave the field if he’s so concerned. What does Nick do to save the situation, protect his classmates and save the game? After the game, the quarterback Chad approaches him and congratulation for saving the team. Plus she promises to work one on one with Nick to see that he gets some playing time. Chad manages to get Nick to ride his science term paper. Chad uses the excuse that the science teacher discovers is plagiarism of the Internet and Chad sees nothing wrong with that. It’s just unfortunate.
2 Inciting Incident When Nick gets home she was junkyard, the three time traveler/geniuses wait for him naked and Disoriented. Why doesn’t Nick call the cops? Perhaps they say something that his father who is missing and has been presume to be dead. Maybe the three time traveler/geniuses recognize him from a picture in the house.
3 First Turning Point at end of Act 1 Saturday and the time travelers/geniuses are coming out of their confusion. Nick takes them to town or they get to pick up clothes that they were used to. First, they pass say costume store with a pirate standing in the window. Blackbeard recognizes his wardrobe it is ProFlex by the robber sword. Archimedes goes into a mattress store and takes a shit out of bed to make himself a toga. Who is the third person? Madame Curie? She just buys a secondhand dress but then surprises everybody with some technological device she buys to wear. ( note: Can’t make this Halloween because that’s too trite. Why would these guys be OK wearing costumes? Maybe it’s Chad’s party that night.? Maybe nicks dad is pulling the strings on this and knows that Halloween is a cliche.)
4 Mid-Point
5 Second Turning Point at end of Act 2
6 Crisis
7 Climax
