Jean’s Open Loops and Mysteries
What I learned doing this assignment is that it’s important to have the main mystery, sub-mysteries, main open loop, and sup-open loops present throughout the outline.
Main Mystery: Who wants Sharra dead and why?
Sub-Mysteries:
What is Vault Agency?
Why is Sharra singled out by Lazarus?
Why does Faolan get involved?
What is it that makes future Lazarus go back and get present Lazarus to recruit Sharra?
What happened to Sharra’s parents?
How can they shift through time?
Why did Sharra’s brother abandon her?
What is it with the silver tattoo?
Why does Sharra react to the logo?
Main Open Loop: Will the Vault Agency uncover the rogue agent before he kills Sharra?
Sub-Open Loops:
Will Faolan and Sharra meet?
Will Tanner come to like Sharra?
Will they have a romantic relationship?
Will Sharra survive?
Will she become a Vault agent?
Will she discover the mystery behind her parents’ death?
How will Sharra fix Vault Agency?
How are Faolan and Sharra connected?
I’ve already built most of these into the outline. Act 1felt a bit sparse. So I’ve added a bit with Lazarus colliding with Sharra to pickpocket her keys. Then Tanner enters her apartment to hide a camera bug. Later in the day, he slips the keys back into her bag while giving her the Vault Agency business card and an invitation to apply.

Mod 3, Lesson 7 – Mysteries and Open Loops
ASSIGNMENT
1. Look through your current outline and find opportunities for at least 5 Open Loops and 5 Mysteries either in the plot or about the characters.
List them like this:
1 – Main Mystery:
Who killed Christian Savage, the history teacher?
Sub-Mysteries:
Will Lane over come his depression about not earning enough money?
Will Lane find the story he needs to meet his publisher’s deadline?
Will Lane Baer get the job at the girl’s school?
Who is the boy that greets Paige when she arrives at school?
Will Lane ever see the mongrel dog again?
2 – Main Mystery
How will Marta’s personality change affect her relationship with Christian Savage and her family?
Sub-Mysteries:
How will Marta reveal her second persona when she puts on the make-up?
How will Paige relate to her mother, the Painted Marta?
How will Marta approach Savage when she shows up as the Painted Marta?
Will Lane become attracted to the Painted Marta?
Did the Painted Marta kill Savage?
3 – Main Mystery
Will Lane’s gun become the murder weapon?
Sub-Mysteries:
Did Marta get Lane’s gun out to protect from what she thinks is an intruder?
When Paige enters, why does Marta hide the gun?
What does Lane do when he finds the gun in bed?
What does Marta do when she sees Lane hide the gun?
Why does she make sure her fingerprints are on the gun?
4- Main Mystery
Sub-Mysteries:
Will Leylah Hafez succeed in seducing Lane?
Will Lane figure out why he can write when Leylah is in the room?
Will Leylah confide in Lane regarding why she hasn’t been going to school?
When Margaret Gilgood, head mistress, trust Lane?
Will Margaret Gilgood fire Lane for fraternizing with a student?
5 – Main Mystery
Will Lane follow Christian Savage’s warning regarding the dangers of the females at the school?
Will Christian Savage accept Lane’s invitation to come have dinner with his family?
Will Lane convince Marta to prepare a home cooked meal for Savage?
Will Marta respond to Savage’s flirting?
How will Paige respond to Savage?
Focusing on Marta’s personality change when she applies the make-up adds an important layer to her and to everyone with whom she comes into contact.
The finding of the gun raises the stakes significantly.

Janeen’s Open Loops and Mysteries
What I learned doing this assignment is I had the hooks for all of these in my scenes, but hadn’t spelled most of them out. This will ensure I include them as I outline.
Main Mystery: Why did Mike and Mindy die?
Sub Mysteries:
1. Who wanted them dead? <div>
2. Is Cara so powerful that she did it with her mental powers?
3. Who benefits from their death?
4. Was it an accident or was their death murder?
5. Did Jim do this to cover up his murder of Molly?
Main Open Loop:
1. Was Cara so jealous she wished them to death? </div><div>
2. Why did all three die at the same railroad tracks?
3. Was Molly’s death a suicide or murder?
4. Were there any witnesses to these deaths?
5. Who wrote Molly’s suicide note?
These were really series questions and I wouldn’t want to blow them all out there in the 1st episode with no background. Mike, Mindy and Molly die in the first episode. We know that something is wrong with Randi, but aren’t sure what. Looking at what I was already considering in the 1st episode, I would go with some more elementary sub mysteries:
Act 1:
1. What is a “mind control and intentional medicine practitioner” and just how powerful are they? </div><div>
2. Do farmers really marry for land?
3. Who fathered Hunter?
4. What’s wrong with Randi?
5. Why did Molly commit suicide?
Act 2:
1. What will Randi’s Alzheimer’s mean to the family? </div><div>
2. Will Mindy keep her promise to Randi?
3. Why do Mike and Mindy want Cara to be their executor when he has Randi and his brothers to choose from?
4. Did Mindy use her mind control techniques to get Cara to agree?
5. Are the premonitions real or imagined or a ploy?
Act 3:
1. Why hasn’t Cara ever been to the farm where her best friend has lived for 12 years? </div><div>
2. Will Cara take the kids back to LA?
3. Will Cara’s boyfriend follow her to the farm? (a reverse Green Acres?)
4. Are there sparks between recent widower Jim and Cara who has heard about him for 16 years?
5. Can Randi talk Cara into staying on the farm?
Act 4:
1. Will Cara convince her boyfriend to come to the farm? </div><div>
2. Can the kids and Randi convince her to stay on the farm?
3. What can she do to earn money on the farm?
4. Moving there would be a huge financial hit
Will Jim be able to get control of the farm’s land by being “helpful”?5. Will Randi’s explanation of Molly’s death convince Cara to stay?
Act 5:
1. Can Cara find a new boyfriend/husband since her biological clock is ticking loudly? </div><div>
2. What was Hunter’s role on the farm?
3. When Cara is doing mind control work, what is she really doing?
4. Why doesn’t Randi tell Cara about her Alzheimer’s?
5. Why can’t the decision to farm come after Mike’s brothers visit from Alaska in the summer?
I’ve decided to add all of these to my Pilot.

Mod 3 – Lesson 7: Mysteries and Open Loops
What I learnt in this assignment is to go back and make sure there are enough mysteries and open loops in each act, and if not look for areas to add.
Look through your outline to see if you can build in at least one mystery and open loop into each Act of your outline.

Why is Abbey trapped in this house? Who is she? Who is holding her captive? Why won’t her mother call her back?
Who is shooting at Joe?
Who are ‘they’ that Father Thomas are coming to get into the house?
Why did Joe become a priest?
Who is Simon really? Who are the union?
Where is Michael?
Who is the strange ghostly figure and why do the leaders have to come at night to watch the children?
What happened to the previous owner?
Why was Sadie the dog so eager to get to the wine cellar?Open Loops
How will Abbey get out? But if she gets out will her mother take her back in?
Will Joe be able to contact his grandmother?
Will Rhonda change her mind about staying?
will Joe and Maude become friends or will her parents stop that?Will the boys come back to get Joe again?
How will he defend himself?
What will Doreen do with the brooch she has?
Why are the children not going to normal school? Will we meet Joe’s tutor, who is it?

What I learned about this assignment is that it is never too late to keep going deeper in the story and the main mystery, main loop and their sub parts really help to create this story and give it more life.
Main Mystery: Who is Mystery woman behind THE TECH? <div>
Sub-Mysteries:
Who is Bruce?
How did he lose his memory?
Is he part of THE TECH?What is his relationship with the Mystery woman?
Will the Agent who Bruce overheard really use anyone to get ahead?
And then what does mean to Bruce and his mission to retrieve the TECH?
Main Open Loop: Will the Agents catch onto who Bruce is?
Sub-Open Loops:
Can Bruce find the tech before the Agents do?
Will Bruce be killed by those who sent him?
Will the Mystery woman create more havoc before being caught?
Will Bruce connect to Snowy in class or will be reveal himself?
Will the Mystery woman attack another person or group of people before she is caught or the TECH retrieved?

Rob’s Open Loops and Mysteries
What I learned doing this assignment is the way keeping a focus on the big picture intrigue feeds down into the individual moments of scenes and dialogue, throwing up ideas for scenes and keeping them on track as part of the bigger picture.
Main Mystery: Who is the Mirage and where did he come from?
Sub Mysteries:
What powers does the Mirage have?
Why does his touch have such a devastating effect on humans?
Why is he hunting for one demon in particular?
What are the experiments he is performing on the demons’ essences?
What is the significance of the voice power that the Mirage discovers when Julia awakens his memories?
Why and how does he know when he is being watched?
Main Open Loop: What is Julia’s mysterious connection to the demons and to the Mirage?
Sub-Open Loops:
What is the Talen Blade that the demons are hunting and why?
What did Julia find in the archaeological dig that has caused the demons to hunt her?
What are the drawings of the demons that she has?
Who put the corpses on the dark side of the moon? Was it the Mirage?
Where have the demons taken Madeleine and why?
I’ve added all of these to the outline and it’s given it a significant lift – more intriguing and tighter, more focussed dialogue.
