Emmanuel Sullivan’s Life Threatening Sequence
What I learned is creating threatening scenarios is an important key to keeping viewers engaged and on the edge. I can recall several scenes in thriller movies where I was shaken, nervous, and my heartbeat increased by the situations the hero was placed in by the villain.
-
Subject Line: Roscoe’s – Life Threatening Sequence
Answer the question “What I learned is…?” My characters can die easily in my super-natural thriller.
WHAT IS THE VILLAIN’S PLAN AND HOW DOES THAT PUT THE HERO IN DANGER? – The Navajo “skinwalker/witch” shape-shifts into animals to kill. Or uses animal power to kill.
WHAT OTHER POTENTIAL DANGERS COULD YOUR HERO EXPERIENCE – AS THEY TRY TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY AND CONFRONT THE VILLAIN? – Tribal Cop faces the spiritual unknown within the Navajo culture.
FROM THE LIST OF POTENTIAL DANGERS – CHOOSE THE ONES THAT WORK FOR THIS STORY – Physical danger – Surveillance / watched – Chased – Lured into a dangerous situation – Closeness to the villain – Danger to someone they know – People around them die or are injured – Stalked – The unknown.
SEQUENCE THOSE DANGERS IN ORDER AND MAKE A LIST.
The Navajo family is chased by “skinwalker/witch” (villain) and killed.
The villain is a member of the Navajo family clan.
The last remaining family member is stalked by “skinwalker/witch.”
Tribal cop and partner cross the path of “skinwalker/witch.” They are in physical danger.
A favorite dog is lured away from owner and killed by “skinwalker/witch.” His body is ripped apart by the limbs.
“Skinwalker/witch” stalks last family member and waits to make a move.
Tribal cop and partner deal with the spiritual unknown, but investigate anyway.
The last family member is chased by “skinwalker/witch” and almost killed.
Tribal cop and partner are in physical danger again to protect that family member.

Kathy’s Life Threatening Sequence
“What I learned is I can put my heroine in more danger throughout the script.”
What is the Villain’s plan and how does that put the Hero in danger? Ben and Marcie find single women with expensive houses. They pick Simone because Ben works with her, sees her expensive house, decides she’ll be his next mark.
Ben’s coverups/lies:
lies to her on their honeymoon, about the note to Marcie
lies about a real estate contract, that Simone found shredded
lies about having 2 previous marriages, one wife was run over, the other’s father was threatened
lies about the pre-nup, he added a secret clause to get her house if she dies
lies about the ex-wives, they are not dead
lies about the boat, not his, is owned by Marcie
lies about Marcie on the boat, she is not a business associate with his company.
Beth worries about Simone after the accident and on the boat.
What other potential dangers could your Hero experience as they try to solve the mystery and confront the Villain?
1. On page 2, Simone is told by Ben’s ex-wife, “I was in danger. You could be too.”
2. After he marries her, Ben threatens Simone, chases her, bangs on her door, then rips up her will.
3. Marcie hits Simone on the head with a titanium tennis racquet. Simone hits the floor but survives with stitches and a concussion.
4. Ben aims his unloaded gun at Simone and fires it.
5. Someone (red herring) runs over Simone with a car but she survives with ONLY a broken elbow.
6. Marcie tries to hit Simone with the boom on the boat. Simone falls, cuts her knee, then goes down into the cabin where she finds out that Marcie owns the boat.
7. Ben socks Simone on the boat then ties her up.
8. After she escapes, Ben shoots at Simone who hits him with a fire extinguisher, knocks him out temporarily.
9. The fire extinguisher rolls off the deck and falls into the ocean.
10. Marcie shoots at Simone, grazing her calf.
11. Ben fires at Simone, hitting the radio which catches on fire.
12. Simone jumps on the upper deck, kicks Marcie’s head when she looks through a ceiling hatch.
13. Ben sticks his head out of the hatch, tracks Marcie with his gun.
14. Simone ducks in front of the doors then leaps up and hits Ben on the head with the wrench.
15. Simone is in danger as flames spread: Flames reach a canvas tarp covering the narrow deck under the starboard railing. The canvas catches on fire and the flames spread along the right side.
16. More danger: A coil of rope on the deck catches fire.
17. Even more danger: The flames along the tarp grow higher and are close to the mainsail.

Kimberly’s Life Threatening Sequence
What I learned: the list of potential danger sources was very useful and letting the possibilities flow yielded some new dangers because there are infinite ways to die at sea.
Villain’s plan & danger to Hero: Rian is a murderer fleeing the police. He needs Lacia to take her boat in the opposite direction of her destination and is willing to kill her to not go back.
Potential dangers for Hero while trying to solve the mystery & confront the Villain:
· Held captive by Rian
· Injured by Rian
· Killed violently by Rian
· Rian kills Emma
· Thrown overboard to die a slow death in open ocean
· Left on deserted island
· Poisoned by Rian
· Starved as supplies run out
· Die of thirst as water supplies run out
· Her PTSD causing her to react in ways that put her and/or them in danger
· Betrayed by Emma after they become friends
· Rian hides her knife
· Trapped on boat together
· Rian looks for navigation tools Lacia has hidden
· Must overcome her fear of ocean to get back to her boat
· Discovers Rian in cabin while in middle of ocean
· Dangerous storm
Sequence of dangers:
· Lacia returns from spear fishing to find Rian in the cabin.
· Lacia is left on their adrift boat and must overcome her fear of ocean to get back to her boat which is drifting away with them on it.
· Fight as she sneaks aboard. Lacia is rendered unconscious.
· Lacia awakes, tied up in the cabin. Her PTSD is in overdrive. Radio is destroyed.
· Rian “accidentally” detaches the sea anchor.
· Water running low.
· With supplies running out, Rian “accidentally” loses the fishing pole while reeling in a whopper. Lacia must leave the boat to spear fish.
· Emma tries spear fishing but Rian throws fish guts into ocean, attracting sharks which almost kill Emma.
· While adjusting sails, Rian’s unwelcome help “accidentally” injures Lacia.
· While teaching him to sail, Rian blames Emma for breaking the radio.
· Lacia sabotages GPS and hides navigation tools as she becomes suspicious of couple.
· While Lacia sleeps, storm comes up and Rian throws Emma overboard. She is attached with a safety line which he uses Lacia’s knife to cut. Lacia arrives just in time to stop him. They fight, knife goes overboard. She catch the rope and pulls Emma aboard. Rian goes below and returns with the spear. He and Lacia battle. Rian is killed or maybe subdued?
· Storm leaves sails in tatters. They are dead in the water.

Wayne’s Life Threatening Sequence
What I learned: I learned to key going. Find the form. Have the think. Write it down. It’s going to take me a stretch to really deal with life threatening action.
1. The Villain Captain Benjamin’s Plan is to murder those police whom he has lured/threatened into corruption with his secrete identity Mr Metal. Hero Cheryl, fresh from the academy, corruption specialist, has been brought in to stop the police from being murdered. Cheryl was hired for show thinking she would be useless. As she figures things out she becomes the cop he most needs to kill… but that’s not easy.
2. Opens with an old timer, Joe, about to retire trying to wise up Cheryl just before he gets a bullet in the head. She chases attacker but they vanish.
As Cheryl searches the police department we see her on video as Captain Benjamin watches calmly. He nods his head.
He tells them he was watching. He doesn’t want to die just before he retires. He thinks they were after him. He stayed hidden.
But why wouldn’t you come to help me? Cheryl wants to know.
An old man like me and a newbie like you. I didn’t like the odds of failure.
3. A thug is chasing Cheryl. She does a twirl and kick. “That’s roller derby” she says as she lays them out. “You’re lucky I didn’t have my skates on.”
As she pursues questioning they are shot from a distance. She ask their corpse, “Why didn’t they just shoot me?” She stands calm and looks around.
Someone is tracking her as she goes for a walk, cameras keep switching.
She passes a big gate into a small grave yard. She test the gate is unlocked. She goes in, not far, then hears someone lock the gate. An eerie metallic voice asks if she really wants to die. “Are you Mr Metal?” she asks. “He laughs.” “Why did Joe have to die?” “He didn’t. You just wouldn’t leave things alone.”
Cops find Cheryl in the cemetery and arrest her. She has no ID. They say they believe her but they have to follow orders. She takes off Parkour style.
Cheryl has to report to Benjamin that someone has spiked the punch with a psychedelic drug and she requests medical leave. Benjamin messes with her mind then orders her strapped down for her own safety. The officers carry on mundane discussions while ignoring Cheryl.
Cheryl says four of us are dead since she started trying to solve this. Someone suggests she doesn’t ask for a review hearing just yet.
Cheryl tries to get the other female officer to release her. They end up seriously flirting but she won’t release her for fear of discipline.
Cheryl tries to report that Mr Metal has threatened her life. They insist that it’s just the drugs and won’t accept the report. Something is very wrong.

Leona Heraty’s Life Threatening Sequence
What I learned doing this assignment is…the best thrillers have danger in the opening scene and the hero is put in danger shortly thereafter, and the danger escalates for the hero in almost every scene until the move is over! I’m doing my best to escalate the danger my hero is facing, until the final scene, which has the climactic moment of danger for my hero!
What is the Villain’s plan and how does that put the Hero in danger? Tuvelle wants to kill McKenzie because McKenzie caused her to break her “winning streak” with men and turned her into a “magnificent loser” in front of her grandparents.
Tuvelle dresses up as a Masked Figure and follows McKenzie, and sabotages her throughout the story, and threatens her life in the end by trying to push her off a cliff.
What other potential dangers could your Hero experience as they try to solve the mystery and confront the Villain? McKenzie faces the dangers of perilous trails that have been washed out by a storm, rock slides, storms and lightning, vertigo and falling from trees, high ridges, and an old fire lookout tower, and ghosts that may or may not be benevolent.
Sequence those dangers in order and make a list.
1. Opens with McKenzie driving to work and a Masked Figure follows close behind her.
2. The Masked Figure climbs a fire escape and climbs on a roof and stares down at McKenzie as she walks from her car to the office.
3. The Masked Figure approaches McKenzie’s parked car.
4. The Masked Figure flits in front of McKenzie’s office.
5. When McKenzie goes to her car, she notices all four tires are flat.
6. McKenzie drives towards her Mom’s house, and the Masked Figure tailgates her and then pulls away, frightening McKenzie.
7. The Masked Figure follows McKenzie as she follows her sister, and drives to her Mom’s house, and watches McKenzie and her sister with binoculars, from a block away, as they enter their Mom’s house.
8. The Masked Figure follows the Lyft driver as he drives McKenzie to Cuyamaca Rancho State Park.
9. The Masked Figure hides behind a tree and watches McKenzie go into the park’s visitor center.
10. Tuvelle screams on the hiking trails near McKenzie.
11. Terry appears on a ridge as the Masked Figure, and waves a knife, to frighten McKenzie.
12. Tuvelle sobs loudly near the cave.
13. Tuvelle leaves a backpack with bloody stains on it in the cave with a note saying she’s being chased by a guy with a mask and knife, with her phone number, and to please help!
14. Terry is dressed as the Masked Figure and he runs outside past the cave, while McKenzie rides out the storm and meets the Off-the-Grid club.
15. McKenzie exits the cave and calls Tuvelle’s cell number. Tuvelle says she’s being stalked by a guy with a mask and a knife, then screams and the line goes dead.
16. McKenzie spots Terry, who is dressed up Masked Figure, on a ridge above her, waving a knife. Terry is the RED HERRING.
17. McKenzie follows more SCREAMS, and finds Tuvelle hiding behind a huge rock.
18. Tuvelle pleads for McKenzie’s help and says she’s being stalked by a guy in a mask with a knife. Tuvelle points to a red mark on her arm and a Black Widow Spider that’s nearby. She’s been bitten by the spider and she sprained her ankle.
19. McKenzie and Tuvelle both try to call 911, but can’t get cell coverage.20. Tuvelle encourages McKenzie to try to get to Perilous Peak, which does have cell coverage, rather than trying to make it back to the visitor center, since the lower trails have been washed out and covered with rocks in the rain and rock slides.
21. Tuvelle says she’ll wait where she’s at for McKenzie to summon help.
22. Tuvelle, dressed as The Masked Figure, follows McKenzie as she runs into a gold mine to seek shelter from lightning and rain.
23. Tuvelle, dressed as the Masked Figure, runs past the gold mine, brandishing a knife.24. As McKenzie goes further into the mine, the Tuvelle, dressed up as the Masked Ghoul, rushes into the mine after McKenzie, brandishing a knife.
25. Tuvelle, dressed as Masked Figure, crawls out from the rubble by the old support beam and crawls over it and catches up to McKenzie. Tuvelle jumps in an old mine cart and uses the levers to roll behind her.
26. Tuvelle, dressed up as a Masked Figure, switches the trail signs, causing McKenzie to get even more lost on the way to Perilous Peak.
27. Tuvelle, dressed as the Masked Figure, chases McKenzie across a rickety, worn bridge over a stream.
28. When McKenzie falls through the rickety bridge to the stream below and hits scrapes her leg on a rock.
29. Tuvelle, dressed as the Masked Figure, circles back and chases McKenzie through a field, where McKenzie seeks shelter in an old underground WWII bunker, and Tuvelle, dressed as the Masked Figure, chases her, but McKenzie hits Tuvelle with an umbrella, stunning her temporarily, enough to get away and escape the bunker.
30. McKenzie, despite having vertigo, climbs a tree and spots a trail of a small, hidden valley, where there’s an old Fire Lookout Tower.
31. McKenzie runs towards the valley, and Tuvelle, dressed as the Masked Figure, appears on the edge of the valley, waving the knife.
32. As McKenzie overcomes her vertigo as she’s climbing the old Fire Lookout Tower, that’s surrounded on all sides by rocks.
33. Tuvelle, dressed as the Masked Figure, chases her up the tower’s tall outside ladder, but McKenzie kicks her, causing her to fall back and hang perilously from the ladder.34. McKenzie keeps running through the old Fire Lookout Tower room, where the ghosts point toward the lost Totem Trail, that glows with green and blue totems, and leads up to the unused backside of Perilous Peak.
35. As McKenzie hurries down the exit ladder on the other side of the tower, Tuvelle, dressed as the Masked Figure, chases McKenzie as she heads toward the lost Totem Trail.
36. McKenzie hears a man’s YELLS behind her and she looks back to see a man, Terry, chasing Tuvelle, dressed as the Masked Figure, down the exit ladder.
37. Terry confronts Tuvelle, who is dressed as the Masked Figure, and tells her to give it up, the joke’s over!
38. Tuvelle, dressed as the Masked Ghoul, rushes at Terry and kicks him in the shins, then waves the knife, and chases after McKenzie, up the Totem Trail, to the edge of Perilous Peak.39. McKenzie pulls herself over the edge and onto the peak, and grabs a large tree branch, and hides behind a large rock.
40. Tuvelle, dressed as the Masked Ghoul, climbs over the edge, and looks around for McKenzie, and Terry climbs over the edge and lunges at Tuvelle, dressed as the Masked Ghoul. They struggle on the ground and McKenzie sees her chance and pulls off the Masked Figure’s mask, it’s Tuvelle!
41. They have the showdown, and Tuvelle explains why she’s been stalking McKenzie, and Terry explains his role, but that he didn’t mean for anyone to get hurt.42. Tuvelle pushes Terry off Perilous Peak!
43. Tuvelle tries to push McKenzie off Perilous Peak, McKenzie steps aside and Tuvelle rushes past her and accidentally plunges off the peak to her death.
44. McKenzie hears Terry’s cries for help. He’s hanging onto a ledge below the peak. She helps him back up and he explains his role again, and they head back towards the visitor center. -

Subject Line: Larry’s Life-threatening Sequence
What I learned is that in looking for high stakes to come into play I found new angles to pursue in the storyline to add to the intrigue mystery and/or suspense. I also found that in sequencing the stakes I could progressively ratchet up the stakes starting with the Hero potentially losing rank to losing his life.
What is the big secret that the Villain is covering up?
The Big Secret is a ring of pedophiles, comprised of top city officials, who want to keep identities hidden while continuing to find “material” for their pleasures. One of the members procures victims and eliminates them after photographing them. Others work to help keep the killer from being uncovered when a victim of the killer is discovered.
What is the Villain’s plan and
how does that put the Hero in danger?Ultimately the Villain’s plan is to kill the detective once he gets close to uncovering the true identity of the killer.
What other potential dangers
could your Hero experience as they try to solve the mystery and confront
the Villain?<div>The Hero-detective is threatened by his captain (ring member) to be busted in rank if he does not close the case on a “fall guy”
The Hero is threatened by his chief (ring member) to stop investigating even after the trial of the fall guy is over.
An attempt is made to blow The Hero in his car or his apartment.
The Hero inadvertently saves a child victim from the killer.
A potential witness who is associated with the Hero is killed and the Hero is blamed for failing to protect him
Killer takes a shot with a sniper rifle at Hero.
Wife leaves Hero as he is consumed with the case.
Killer stalks Hero to his home and surveilles him
A fellow detective is assigned to surveille Hero and report Hero’s progress to Captain.
Hero starts drinking more (vodka – straight up) as a result of the case, which threatens his career and his solving of the case. Does not help when he is imbibing at the police station.
The killer sets up improvised explosive devices (ied’s) to eliminate the Hero.
Killer kidnaps a family member of the Hero as bait to lure the detective into a trap.
From the list of potential
dangers, choose the ones that work for this story.
Sequence those dangers in order
and make a list like the one I did for Basic Instinct above.Rolling Answers #3 and #4 together.
The Hero-detective is threatened by his captain (ring member) to be busted in rank if he does not close the case on a “fall guy”
A fellow detective is assigned to surveille Hero and report Hero’s progress to Captain.
Hero starts drinking more (vodka – straight up) as a result of the case, which threatens his career and his solving of the case. Does not help when he is imbibing at the police station.
The Hero is threatened by his chief (ring member) to stop investigating even after the trial of the fall guy is over. He will be demoted like forever.
The Hero inadvertently saves a child victim from the killer. Killer does not like this.
A potential witness who is associated with the Hero is killed and the Hero is blamed for failing to protect him
As the Hero gets close to identifying the killer, the ring leader directs killer to eliminate Hero.
Killer takes a shot with a sniper rifle at Hero, but misses.
Killer stalks Hero to his home and surveilles him.
Killer kidnaps a nephew of the Hero as bait to lure the detective into a trap.
Killer shoots Hero and nephew. (But is the end?)

Ola Höglund’s Life Threatening Sequence
What I learned is
actually it is some kind of real or false danger in almost every scene, even the ones that is about love and marriages. The only dangers on the list that this story doesn’t have is “Thugs or professionals hired to hurt them” and “Other parties who want the villain dead”. So this assignment was a good test. Maybe I’ve misunderstood the assignment since my list is so long? I learn once again it’s not easy to write everything in short sentences. The more time you have, the shorter you can write.
VILLAIN’S PLAN
Revenge. He wants Borowiak to be prisoned like he was. He wants to prove that Rostagno was just lucky in catching him. This time Rostagno will catch the wrong guy. He wants them both to suffer, not die. But if they are on to him, he has to kill them, preferably making it look like they killed each other.
DANGER SEQUENCE
1. Rostagno wants to avoid Borowiak, but Borowiak doesn’t let him avoid him. Rostagno could lose his new job or reputation if Borowiak, as the police psychologist, was the one responsible for firing him in NY. Rostagno don’t want to be reminded of what happened in NY when he shot a colleague chasing the New York Serial Killer (NYSK).
2. The librarian/villain listens to Borowiak’s and Rostagno’s conversation in the library. They mention NYSK without knowing he is very close.
3. Borowiak lies still in his bed naked. Is he dead? Crosscut with police sirens in the desert. (This is 10 months later than their library meeting. Borowiak starts his journey here by being “mentally dead”.)
4. Rostagno investigates the murder scene where the first victim is blown up in pieces. Could there be more bombs exploding in the hangar?
5. Borowiak loses the money he got in advance when he can’t write the book he was supposed to write about psychopaths. Is he losing it? (His secret is that he is scared his wife will leave him if she finds out that he has the brain of a psychopath.) Borowiak also has to deal with carpenters due to the damage caused by damp. Not good for his mental health.
6. Rostagnos boss/ex-wife tells Rostagno’s police partner that Rostagno caught the New York Serial Killer (NYSK) with the scary nickname you don’t want to say. The respect for Rostagno changes completely knowing how dangerous and brutal NYSK was/is.
7. Rostagno investigates the murder scene where the second victim is found dead in her car in her garage.
8. Borowiak walks down the stairs during the skyfall checking out what the sound is from the kitchen. Is there a killer in his house? No, it’s just the provisional roof blowing away – or?
9. Borowiak kidnaps the carpenter responsible for the roof leak, risking being prisoned.
10. Rostagno interrogates Borowiak who risks being jailed. Is Borowiak also the killer?
11. Borowiak and his wife talks about her father being killed 25 years ago. She is scared her secret will be revealed, but we don’t know that yet.
12. Borowiak is stalked by Rostagno when he drives to a bar. Borowiak tells some basketball players about NYSK. They don’t want to listen since they are afraid of nightmares.
13. Newspaper publisher goes to meet an informer at the bar Borowiak visits. The publisher is found dead in his pool looking like the “pool” in Borowiak’s kitchen after the skyfall.
14. FBI enters the scene on Rostagno’s initiative. He wants to prove himself to the FBI as well. They start with the three autopsies.
15. A hand takes Borowiak’s knife.
16. Borowiak’s wife is humiliated in the library by her psychopathic university research boss. Gets support from the librarian/villain pretending being on her side.
17. Rostagno risks his reputation in front of FBI when he launches his murder theory about Borowiak.
18. Rostagno and FBI raid a profiled suspect’s house. Very close Rostagno is shot by his police partner (just like Rostagno shot his partner in NY).
19. Rostagno watches the research boss and the librarian play tennis while waiting to ask the boss about the suspect they have. Where has he seen that special forehand technique before?
Rostagno’s partner asks at the tennis club if Rostagno is afraid of NYSK coming back, when the librarian listens from the table next to them. We learn that NYSK escaped prison during his mother’s funeral with the help of a small gun in the dead mother’s vagina. (The mother was ashamed that her son got caught. She took her life facing a cancer verdict, leaving a special legacy.)
20. Rostagno risks his reputation in front of FBI when he interrogates a suspect in a tough manner, with Rostagno’s self-hate cracking out between the lines.
21. The university research boss scares the shit out of Borowiak’s wife in the library.
22. Borowiak finds the surveillance microphones in his kitchen. Evidence he is set up.
23. Borowiak tells the flower shop to send flowers to his wife every birthday after he has died. As if he will die soon.
24. Borowiak’s wife wants a divorce when she doesn’t get his attention due to the setup.
25. Rostagno and his boss/ex-wife investigates a tip at night in the aviation graveyard in the desert, scary environment, until she and we realize that Rostagno has lured her into a date with dinner under the stars with a butler. They dance close to the edge risking falling down.
26. Borowiak lures Rostagno in a pit he can’t get out of when Rostagno pursues Borowiak. Rostagno fears for his life, but Borowiak rescues him.
27. Rostagno chases Borowiak to the airport, boarding the same flight – he thinks – but it’s the wrong flight. Borowiak NY, Rostagno LA.
28. Rostagno is overpowered by the bus driver when he’s complaining about the AC.
29. Borowiak steals a police badge in the police locker room in NY pretending to be a carpenter.
30. Borowiak interviews Rostagno’s best friend while the computer shows him being wanted for triple murder. He learns that a headhunter (Villain) has called the friend asking questions about Rostagno some years ago. (We learn that Rostagno’s boss is his ex-wife. No one at the police station knows that secret.)
31. Rostagno’s ex-wife learns (in bed with Rostagno) from Rostagno’s best friend that Rostagno stalked her before they became a couple. She brings her gun out when they are both naked. Is he a psychopathic killer? Rostagno defends himself with just declaring his love for her.
32. Borowiak finds Rostagno’s file at the Internal Affairs office, shocked that he has misplaced their brain scans. He is responsible for Rostagno losing his career and marriage. This is evidence why Rostagno wants to set him up.
33. Wanted Borowiak escapes the police building with cops looking for him.
34. FBI finds the sand bottles searching Borowiak’s house. FBI also finds the microphones, confronting Rostagno who says he has not put them there.
35. Borowiak tries to buy a gun from the Bronx mafia threatening him.
36. Borowiak phones his wife from New York knowing that FBI listens to their conversation. Borowiak tells everything about Rostagno and about himself being a psychopath according to the brain scans. Rostagno is relieved he doesn’t have the brain of a psychopath. He also tries to explain that this is Borowiak’s plan to set him up.
37. Rostagno feels betrayed by his ex-wife when he learns that she never told him that she knew about the brain scan showing him to have the brain of a psychopath. That’s why she divorced him? She demands him to stop pursuing Borowiak now that Rostagno has a motive.
38. Borowiak’s wife realizes that someone knows about her past. Rostagno? She leaves her cell phone in the desert to be sure no one can follow her or listen to her conversations. But first she texts the librarian/villain that she won’t come back to the library until after they’ve closed. Villain responds with glad emoji.
39. We see the soil pit murder in NY 25 years ago, but we can’t see under the motorcycle helmet who the killer is, and we don’t understand that it’s 25 years ago until the end of the scene, as if it was a present murder taking place.
40. FBI now in NY finds out about the soil pit accident long ago, discovering Borowiak’s wife was one of the witnesses the police talked to about possible scenarios of the accident.
41. Rostagno calls the library to see if Borowiak’s wife is there. Villain texts to the other librarian taking the call, that she will be here at closing time.
42. FBI in NY discusses which one of them is the killer setting the other one up? Borowiak or Rostagno?
43. Disguised Borowiak arrives at the desert airport, goes to Fedex and picks up his package with the gun in it. Does anyone of Rostagno’s airport tipsters see him?
44. The librarian/villain closes the library for the night knowing that Rostagno has just entered the library with Borowiak’s wife on her way there.
45. Rostagno sees the librarian going into Borowiak’s wife’s office space, placing four sand bottles in her cupboard. Rostagno hides in the closet.
46. Rostagno texts his boss/ex-wife about the sand found on the murder scenes. Was there any colored sand around the soilpit 25 years ago? No, nothing in the reports about that.
47. Someone cuts Styrofoam with Borowiak’s knife.
48. Borowiak’s wife goes to the library to get her work computer and picture of her dad, scared that someone has or will connect the dots about her killing. Rostagno hides in the closet again, but his phone is left on the desk when he puts back the examined sand into the bottle. She sees the phone, but decides to not touch it, leaving it there.
49. Borowiak kidnaps Rostagno’s boss/ex-wife to make Rostagno confess in her presence. They drive to the library in her police car.
50. Borowiak calls the library from her police phone. The villain picks the phone up wondering who calls the library after closing, but he can’t answer with his voice. Borowiak understands it is the dumb librarian, so he asks him to text to this number if his wife is in the building. Villain texts that Borowiak’s wife is here. Now the villain knows everyone will be in the library.
51. Rostagno goes to the librarian’s office space and sees his rackets, and now he realizes where he has seen that forehand before… The librarian is NYSK with a new face.
52. In his shock a scared Rostagno backs away, dropping his phone in the dark while texting to bring in the task force. The librarian enters. Rostagno hides with his gun ready. The librarian sees the phone on the floor when the policeman outside in the car texts. He takes it and texts that Rostagno is coming soon. Rostagno also without a phone now.
53. The librarian cuts the library telephone line, goes out and kill the policeman with Borowiak’s knife, takes the gun, police radio and cell phone from the policeman. And fills his blood in a bottle.
54. FBI watches the interview that Borowiak did with NYSK after he was prisoned. We learn why NYSK didn’t want to kill his hated mother (subtext: why he doesn’t want to kill Borowiak and Rostagno). Borowiak asks about the killings. NYSK starts talking:
55. We see one of the killings from NYSK, very brutal rage. This is an evil animal we are dealing with.
56. Rostagno looks for Borowiak’s wife and for the librarian/villain with his gun ready.
Borowiak and Rostagno’s boss/ex-wife enters the library from the backdoor.
57. Borowiak and Rostagno sneaks up on each other in the dark library. Borowiak’s wife sneaks up and hits Rostagno’s hand with the frame of her father’s picture. His gun goes off. Borowiak reacts by shooting towards Rostagno in the dark, but the bullet hits his wife.
58. Borowiak’s wife confesses that she killed her father’s killer in the soilpit. Borowiak shocked that his non-psychopathic wife has killed someone. She dies.
59. Rostagno tells Borowiak about the librarians forehand… He is NYSK with the name you don’t want to say. Borowiak thinks NYSK could be up in the library lift.
60. Rostagno finds the librarian looking dead in the library lift with a knife in his bleeding stomach and close to his mouth on the floor lies the policeman’s gun. Although Rostagno is careful, the librarian overpowers him. Rostagno pushes the button to make the lift go up in the air.
61. Borowiak lies handcuffed with his dead wife without the key, blaming himself, devastated. He can’t escape from the villain now.
62. Borowiak carries his dead wife between the bookshelves to surprise the villain when the lift comes down to the floor, shoots the villain, saving Rostagno’s life.

Melanie’s Life Threatening Sequence
What I learned: Each scene needs an element of danger and the more ways you can offer that sense of thrill, the better.
What is the Villain’s plan and how does that put the Hero in danger?
Hugo Gage is her therapist and husband to a wife who had called 911 and suffered death at what he thinks is Vivienne’s negligence.
His plan is to avenge his wife’s death by inflicting trauma and death among Vivienne’s friends and family. Each call 911 too late for help and each happen a little closer to home until it’s her daughter who is the target.
While enacting his plan, she sees him for PTSD therapy where he can gauge the effectiveness of each crime, as he measures Vivienne’s response. She opens herself up to him, unaware that he is the killer. The fact that she won’t apologize for her death, causes him to escalate each death.
What other potential dangers could your Hero experience as they try to solve the mystery and confront the Villain?
She opens herself up to him psychologically as well. She’s an open book, and under his control.
Her daughter is an angry teen. She won’t let her mom in, and she fears she is doing drugs/hanging out with a bad group of friends. She’s in danger of losing her daughter.
Her work suffers, she starts to lose confidence in handling difficult situations. Danger of losing her job.
Public humiliation.
Danger of losing her friends.
Danger of having a meltdown she won’t recover from.
Hugo gives her meds – danger of OD’ing.
Danger of losing custody.
From the list of potential dangers, choose the ones that work for this story.
Sequence those dangers in order:
In a therapy session – Hugo probes, deepening Vivienne’s PTSD wounds.
She answers a 911 call that is from one of her acquaintances- that she mentioned during a session. Intruder kills her.
Daughter, Natalie, gives her a hard time – wants to go to live with her ex-husband.
Vivienne takes meds, starting to lose touch.
At work, another 911 call from a friend. She ends up dead.
Therapy session goes deeper, he increases her dosage of meds.
Supervisor finds meds in her purse at work. Questions them/her ability to keep working.
911 call from her daughter. She leaves work to find her.
When she gets there, she comes face to face with killer…and no one to call.

Ben aims the gun at Simone,(V,LT) tells her to open the doors. She ducks in front of the doors where he can’t see her, spots the tackle box, grabs a big wrench, leaps up, and hits Ben on the head with the wrench.
Ben, gun in hand, falls into the cabin on top of Marcie. The gun hits her head. Both lie in a pile on the cabin floor.
(LT scene) Flames reach a canvas tarp covering the narrow deck under the starboard railing. The canvas catches on fire and the flames spread along the right side. Simone opens a storage box to the left of the cabin doors. She grabs a towel and tries to put out the flames but the towel catches on fire so she throws it overboard. A coil of rope on the deck catches fire.
Simone backs away from the flames and climbs onto the cabin roof. She walks along the railing until she is at the bow.
The flames along the tarp grow higher. (more LT)
The edge of the mainsail starts to blacken, smolder, then catches fire. (most LT)

RESOLUTION: Simone is rescued by the Coast Guard. Ben and Marcie are jailed. Simone sells Ben’s condos, gets on a plane to Paris. She sits next to a Frenchman who asks her to see the Louvre with him. Her passport sticks out of her bag.
