What I learned doing this assignment is

I looked through the outline and listed mysteries and open loops that are obvious. There are a lot in there I cannot see right now. Others will show up in scenes. Having these mysteries and open loops have shot up the interest level of the pilot. Without building them in in advance, I believe that the interest level of the pilot would have not gone anywhere. It would have been an average pilot. Not anymore.

What I learned doing this assignment is that I don’t need to answer all the questions.

Some of these were already in my outline. Of the ones that I added, it helped explain Dr. Jones’s actions and more about the hospital.

What I learned from doing this assignment is that there are a lot of opportunities for mystery and open loops in the pilot but settling on a few and then putting them into JUST the pilot seems very hard for me to do. Plus, I’m behind (again).

Q4: Adding in some of these mysteries and loops has made me rewrite my outline again and again. For instance: the Mystery & Open Loop of Edris’s mission and search for Alex takes on much greater importance and becomes more of a sinister slow burn to better engage the audience’s interest level.

I tend to create rapid fire questions and answer most of them quickly. My storytelling style sacrifices lasting open loops for forward momentum.

Act 1:

Stacking intrigue for act 1: (Renquist’s hidden agenda) lots of little things that close off every avenue of escape, to the point that James has to think out of the box and thinks of running for president. Add framing question, “How can he fight back?” to make the audience think about the question before it’s answered.

(M) Why is their company worth so much money?

(M) What was Renquist’s plan for the company?

Essence: (N TP1) (M TP1) (R TP1) Maria and James started a billion-dollar software company, but Renquist steals control of it with a shady contract. Renquist will kill Maria once he has found all copies of the surveillance tapes. (R midpoint) Renquist attacks James in every way, even petty things like blocking his unemployment. Lawyers and friends won’t return his calls because everyone is afraid of Renquist.

(M) What is on the surveillance tapes that’s worth killing for?

(M) Who did Maria mail the packages of the surveillance tapes to?

(M) Maria winked to Thelma. What does Thelma know about the tapes?

While Renquist is beating down James, Maria is watching from the surveillance cameras in his office. We see her making copies and putting those into packages.

Maria mails off two packages and winks at the executive assistant, Thelma Livingston, which implies she’s aware of what the packages are. More is revealed in a later episode.

Maria reveals to Renquist that she has the tapes. Renquist threatens to kill her.

When Renquist steals the company from James, he wants Maria to run it. It looks like Maria is betraying him. What actually happened is she lulled him into complacency and then kicked his ass.

Maria goes to let James know he didn’t betray him. He makes her almost beg for forgiveness.

At the bar, James reveals he figured out she didn’t betray him because she was wearing lipstick which happens when she kicks people’s asses but pretended he didn’t know to make her work for it.

(M) Why is Maria so jealous when she has no interest in being physical with James?

Turning Point: (N-midpoint)James decides to run for president, as a power-up to defend against Renquist’s power and influence.

(OL) Maria was the president in the simulation, but she’s running for VP. Will something happen to James?

(OL) Will James and Maria win the election for president and VP?

Act 2:

James bluffs to scare some punks by warning about all the things dihydrogen monoxide can do. He acts like its a dangerous chemical. It turns out it’s a reference to water. Turns out it wasn’t water but vodka, so he could have accidentally created a Molotov cocktail, so ironically it was dangerous.

Essence: James wants MJ to be his VP, but he has to prove he can bluff. He bluffs some punks with steam in a steampunk bar. After the bar, they do a practice campaign video with James drunk that goes off the rails.

(OL) Can an honest non-politician survive in the cutthroat dishonest world of politicians and lawyers?

(OL) Is Maria fully committed to James’ campaign?

Stacking intrigue for Act 2: Pressure builds on Maria to retaliate over her displeasure with James’ campaign: (strange behavior) being too drunk, (strange behavior) smashing her table, (deception) saying she’s sold on the idea, but not really sold.

Turning Point/Midpoint: (M midpoint) In spite, Maria uploads the embarrassing video unedited.

Act 3:

Essence: (N TP2)(M TP2) James wakes up in Maria’s bed thinking they had drunk sex, but he’s still fully clothed. James goes home and finds his apartment in shambles. Maria confesses about the surveillance tapes. They rush to MJ’s place where there are intruders.

James gets drunk and Maria tucks him into her bed. When he wakes up he thinks they had drunk sex and is corrected in embarrassment. He had also broken a table but thinks MJ did it in anger.

(OL) Will None and MJ ever date?

None of James’ friends call him back, so he uses Maria’s phone to call his friend. It reveals that Renquist is trying to not only destroy James but anyone who shares his common Chinese name.

(M) Maria kicked Renquist’s ass. Why is he coming after James instead of Maria?

James’ apartment was ransacked. They were looking for something. That forces Maria to confess about the surveillance tapes. James realizes that the car was also repossessed to look in it. They rush to Maria’s apartment to find intruders.

Stacking intrigue for Act 3 (conspiracy):

1. We’ve seen packages sent out and death threats over them to lay the groundwork.

2. We saw James’ apartment ransacked.

3. While we thought James’ car being repossessed meant one thing, James realizes it’s to allow the car to be searched too.

4. Then we have the urgency of expecting Maria’s apartment is being searched. Which prepares us for the intruders turning point.

Turning Point: (M major conflict) (R TP2) Maria attacks and chases the intruders, but instead of catching them, she gets taken away by police.

(M) Who are the intruders?

(M) Did Renquist send the intruders?

(M) What happened to the intruder that Maria stabbed?

(OL) Where is MJ’s missing katana that she stabbed an intruder with?

Maria stabs one of the intruders. The intruders escape and cops instead arrest Maria. It becomes obvious that Renquist has cops on the payroll too.

One of the intruders is Zelda Remington, who will murder her way into James’ love life later in the season, holding a personal grudge against Maria for her partner’s death. More layers of this will be revealed in episode 1 of season 1.5.

Act 4:

Essence: (N major conflict) (R major conflict) Renquist has crooked cops on his payroll. One of Renquist’s people interrogates None in the police station. They offer him a deal if he’ll turn on Maria, but he doesn’t. The embarrassing video where he talked about being like None of the Above went viral but no one is talking about James Wong. (R ending)

In the police station, Trench Coat Man wants James to help him frame Maria for murder. James doesn’t help and he gives up on that plan but threatens James. He is thought to be a henchman of Renquist, but he’s a Russian oligarch that has as much to lose if the tapes get out. That reveal happens at the end of season 1.0.

(M) How did Renquist get enough access to a police station for his henchman to interrogate James?

(M) Which cops at the police station were on Renquist’s payroll?

The police were told Maria hurt James and he says she didn’t but when he takes off his shirt, he’s covered with bruises. He then half-remembers that he fell down. It’s only after he finds his embarrassing video that Maria is vindicated. This is how it’s revealed that his video went viral.

Stacking intrigue for Act 4: None of the Above is reflected back to James 3 times:

1. (secret identity) A young cop calls him None of the Above Guy in the police station, the reveal that the embarrassing video has gone viral

2. (mystery) No one is reacting to James. All the reaction videos are about being none of the above. He went “viral wrong.”

3. (deception) The Take Back America Movement endorsed none of the above and more jobs. James has no other choice than to act.

Turning Point: James changes his name to None of the Above and gets Maria to change her name to More Jobs to match their viral video.

They went viral wrong. Everyone is talking about None of the Above and More Jobs, but not James and Maria. The video was so popular that a political group endorsed those names. So James and Maria have to change their names to None of the Above and More Jobs to match what was popular about their video.

(OL) How will people react to James Wong and Maria Cortez changing their names to None of the Above and More Jobs?

Act 5:

Essence: The name changes are successful. James blamed his brother Shen for losing the company as his lawyer. Out of options, None of the Above(None) makes peace with his brother and asks him to be the campaign manager. Shen goes over the remaining options in the contract, but no options are useful. Out of options on using the contract, they are committed to president idea.

(OL) Will any of the contract escape clauses be useful?

Stacking intrigue for act 5 (deception): the Take Back America Movement endorsement means they have to act quick to associate that endorsement with themselves, before the movement realizes.

Lock In: (N-ending) (M ending) They have to get on the ballot before Take Back America realizes they’re a real campaign.

(OL) How will they be able to run a campaign with just three people?

What I learned doing this lesson is: I need to better understand how to position the open loops and mysteries. Plus, a lot more will surface as the plot and characters evolve.

A boxer in an underground boxing match, a woman at an awards ceremony, a guy who flies in a helicopter to the same ceremony and knows the woman.

Act 1:

Essence: (Viktor Opening) Viktor is a highly successful VC who loves boxing, amphetamines. Has a gorgeous wife who is his partner. Is on the verge of closing a huge business deal.

(Maya Opening) Maya is a highly successful VC who is lonely and feels distant from her husband. She is estranged from her family and reconnects when her father falls ill.

(Jacob Opening) Jacob is a highly successful VC who hates rival Viktor. Maya’s ex-lover. Is gunning for the same deal as Viktor and wooing Maya back.

When Viktor does not show up for Maya’s award ceremony, Jacob woos her.

Turning Point: Maya and Viktor cause Dave Richardson’s company to collapse, for revenge. Also affected is Tyson Electric, which has a contract to supply Richardson’s gas stations with EV charging equipment and solar panels, nationwide. About $500 million.

Essence: Several clients pull out of Viktor’s company. He has a showdown with Maya and she leaves home. There is a mole in Viktor’s office.

(Viktor TP 1) Several clients pull out of Viktor’s company because of the IPO scandal.

(Maya TP1) Maya is dealing with her father’s death and feeling emotional about reconnecting with her family. Then has a fight with Viktor.

(Viktor TP 2) Viktor discovers that there’s a mole in his company and that Jacob was behind the IPO failure.

(Viktor Midpoint) Viktor decides to go to war.

(Maya TP 2) Maya goes to her mother’s house. Expresses regret for her choices in life.

(V and M Major Conflict) Viktor and Maya fight, about their marriage, their business, drifting apart…and Viktor’s jealousy of Jacob’s former relationship with Maya is triggered…he accuses her of sympathizing with Jacob.

(M Dilemma) Leave Viktor or stand by him and their business.

(Viktor Dilemma) Trust Maya or not.

(M TP 3) Maya moves to her mother’s home.

Turning Point: Maya decides to leave Viktor.

(J Ending) Jacob’s plan to destroy Viktor is in motion, he’s gained the DriveNXT profits and is back with Maya.
