Sherri D. Coffee – Profound Ending

What I learned doing this assignment is to work backwards and brainstorm the story to align with a profound ending. And that I need to brainstorm my story some more!

    1. Profound Truth and Ending: Kathryn’s goal is to “change the world”. When she embarks upon her first coalition building assignment for the firm, she uncovers the truth of the political system. In her quest to gain support for legislation, she uncovers more layers that prevent her success. As she navigates the internal and external politics, she discovers a path forward and realizes that she can make a difference. And small incremental successes make a difference.

    2. How do your lead characters come to an end in a way that represents the completed change?

Change agent Ford guides Kathryn through the coalition process and educates her on the political process. Feeling the heat from his boss, Ford tries to control her actions. She rebels. He accepts that he cannot control her.

Transformable character Kathryn meets obstacles both inside her firm and outside in the political landscape. She fails but finds a way to succeed by accepting small incremental successes that contribute to her overall plan to “change the world”.

    3. What are the setup/payoffs that complete in the end of this movie, giving it deep meaning? Setup: Kathryn states that the issue is bigger than this legislation.

Payoff: Kathryn sees the end game will not be accomplished without small incremental successes and lots of tenacity.

Setup: Kathryn states that we cannot wait for progress, we have to make progress.

Payoff: End game plan towards progress

Setup: Kathryn learns to chip away slowly and apply methodical leverage to inspire change.

Payoff: She can make a difference.

    4. Designing the end to have us see an inevitable ending and make it a surprise? After a heated exchange with the firm’s owner, Kathryn walks out and gives up.

    5. What is the parting image/line that leaves us with the profound truth in our minds?

Kathryn stands on the capitol steps and with determination states “ok scarlett, you can fail tomorrow. Today we are going in”

Laura Hyler’s Profound Ending Lesson 8

What I learned doing this assignment is how important it is to tie in all the set ups with the payoffs to get a powerful Profound Screenplay. I will be revisiting this assignment.

    1. My Profound Truth is that people are the same, we are more similar than not, and that relationships can exist between people of different races. It will be delivered powerfully in my ending with the marriage of Naomi and Kofi.

    2. My lead characters, Naomi and Kofi will change in that they are willing to accept that they will sometimes face difficulties, and their relationship will continue anyway.

    3. The setup/payoffs that complete in the end of the movie are: when Naomi meets Richard, a man who was married outside of his race, and shared his happy story with her; he acts as a mentor for a short time; and when Kofi learns how much trouble Naomi has gone through to stop his deportation, and his friend, Isaac’s complete change in his attitude toward Naomi.

    4. I am designing the story to have the audience see Naomi and Kofi together, but it is ultimately threatened by Naomi’s sister and then the deportation. It is surprising when it happens because it appears that all is lost, until Naomi intervenes and prevents Kofi’s deportation.

    5. The parting image is the wedding of Naomi and Kofi. The people who objected to their relationship have changed and are in attendance. Parting line: “People are the same wherever you go.” (Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney 😊)

    1. Profound Truth:

Romance is team sport for a common or negotiated childhood dream or joint mission

    Final Images

Bird dance > champaign toasts and negotiations > negotiated dreams with Go Giving bonuses of Dad’s wind tunnel, maybe book deal on romance history > walking off in attempted waltz steps to Ob Sea

    Wind tunnel

    Publisher

    I rule v partner

    Dance off

Wants father mate > finds one

Want to vamp G to come G insists Siberia

Need earlier kite and flying have kite in workshop

Need earlier need stress sail power vs Dad wind tunnel

    Earlier stress dragons dragon kite

Must develop have approx. joint dreams/make history> solve human problems. Czarina/ fear of China/ Mongals/ war schrmiages

Fight fair vs rule or pout

Vulger hold hands vs leave holding hands

    How
are you designing it to have us see an inevitable ending and then making
    it surprising when it happens?

    3. Talk of G’s secret weapon

    Have fly kite

Need to earlier have kite flying set up

    Brenda’s Profound Ending

What I learned doing this assignment is I need to create intrigue / setups so there can be more payoffs. I have a few, but I think this area needs to be strengthened. I also haven’t decided on the ending scene yet, but I created one for this assignment that I like. I have a few more ideas for the ending, and I will pick the one that will deliver the profound truth in the most powerful way.

    1. What is your Profound Truth and how will it be delivered powerfully in your ending?

Profound Truth – Love Heal All Hurts

Ending – The mother and child create a treasure hunt for the other children in the hospital, the child lives much longer than expected and is shown a volunteer in the same hospital. She also writes a book about her Treasure Hunt experience with her mother.

    2. How do your lead characters (Change Agent and Transformable Characters) come to an end in a way that represents the completed change?

The Child, the Transformable Character, is shown as someone who is happy and lives much longer than expected. She works as a volunteer in the same hospital to help other children the way her mother helped her deal with her illness. The child’s old ways were that she was unhappy and very lonely.

The mother, the Change Agent, writes books about her adventures so she can spend more time with her daughter and supports in all her activities. The mother’s old ways were that she was always away on trips and didn’t want to spend much time with her daughter.

    3. What are the setup/payoffs that complete in the end of this movie, giving it deep meaning?

Answers to: Why the mother is always away which only started when the child got sick, what’s going on health-wise for the child, why the nurse made disparaging comments about the treasure hunt, why the mother picked a treasure hunt,

Need to add to opening a little more intrigue using interest techniques.

    4. How are you designing it to have us see an inevitable ending and then making it surprising when it happens?

We think the child is going to die, but she lives much longer than expected because her change in attitude has made her stronger and happier. The child as she grows up becomes an inspiration for other children dealing with illness and she writes a book about her own experience that becomes a bestseller among terminally ill patients young and old.

    5. What is the Parting Image/Line that leaves us with the Profound Truth in our minds?

The parting image is going to be the funeral for the child. We’re going to see her best friend talking about the child and what she learned with reference to how life is a treasure hunt, and riches can be found anywhere even in death.

PROFOUND SCREENWRITING LESSON 8PATRICK MALONE PROFOUND ENDING

What I learned was to reconsider the ending. Developing the setups and payoffs was a great help. I learned to create a profound final image/statement. This exercise once again helped me flush out the story.

    1. The profound Truth: each of us has unique qualities that should be recognized and appreciated by ourselves and by others.

    2. How do your lead characters come to an end in a way that represents the completed change?

Transformable Character Dennis has transformed from a person who denied his Comanche cultural heritage to a man who found strength, spirit and pride in who he really is.

In the End, after saving his friends and helping Star Man escape, he embraces his culture and is actually teaching a course at his school in Indian Studies.

Change Agent Jennifer’s encouragement helped Dennis take the steps that led to is transformation.

In the End, it is she who advocated for Dennis to teach the Indian Studies course.

Mike started out taunting Dennis and ridiculing Indians. In the end he comes to appreciate the courage of Dennis and respect for Indian culture.

    3. What are the setup/payoffs that complete in the end of this movie, giving it deep meaning?

    Setups:

    – Dennis cannot answer a students question about Comanche culture.

    – Dennis is finds the panhandling Indians repulsive and representative of most Indians.

    – Dennis is dismayed/forlorn when they drive by his childhood home.

    – Dennis is afraid to go into the mine.

    – Dennis refuses to help deal with Star Man.

    The Payoffs:

    – Dennis goes into a trance and connects with his ancient Comanche culture

    – Dennis enters the mine to confront Star Man.

    – Dennis accepts and appreciates his Indian heritage

    – Dennis starts teaching a course on Indian Studies.

    Setups:

    – Jennifer tries several times to get Dennis to recognize his Indian roots.

    The Payoffs:

    – Jennifer convinces Dennis to discover his heritage.

    – Jennifer convinces Dennis to confront Star Man.

    – Jennifer vouches for Dennis to teach Indian Studies.

    Setups:

    – Mike constantly taunts Dennis about being Indian.

    – Mike has a low opinion of all Indians.

    – Mike wants to use violence to deal with Star Man.

    The Payoffs:

    – Mike comes to admire and respect Dennis and Indians.

    4. Designing the end to have us see an inevitable ending and make it a surprise?

When it appears that Dennis will not connect with his Indian roots and confront Star Man, Mike and Ned decide to kill Star Man.

Dennis alone at the fire goes into a trance and does discover his roots. He unexpectedly enters the mine and confronts Star Man.

The others witness what seems to be an explosion. They assume Dennis is dead.

Dennis emerges from the mine strong and confident. He has recognized and accepted his true self.

    5. What is the parting image/line that leaves us with the profound truth in our minds?

Dennis in front of the class writes on the blackboard in bold letters INDIAN STUDIES. He turns to the class and says, “We have a lot to learn. Discovering who you truly are is an amazing journey.”

    A. PROFOUND TRUTH – When you make the faith you were raised with your own and give your spiritual journey to God, you are able to recognize His miraculous hand in your life. Bess came to understand that the Lord had gone ahead of her through the parents who lived their faith in front of her. She recognized that the efforts she had made to protect herself (friendship with the Native Americans, learning to shoot a gun, planting her own crops) might or might not be successful. When she came to the understanding that she could trust God with everything that happened, no matter the outcome, she finally found peace.

    B. THE CHANGE – Bess went from a young girl (unwillingly) dependent on her parents’ wisdom and guidance to survive, to a young woman dependent only on the God she had come to love and trust. The change is internal, but we see it in her external actions when she accepts the apparent outcome of the drought and the loss of her crops.

    C. PAYOFFS – Will the drought end? Will Bess (and the other colonists) survive? Will her friendship with the Native American Sokanon endure? Will John Howland reject her for her lack of faith, or will they marry?

    D. SURPRISING – The colonists end the day of prayer for the drought with mended relationships and new trust in God to deliver them despite the lack of rain. Then, rain comes in the night, and their crops are saved.

    E. PARTING IMAGE – The colonists gather for a Day of Thanksgiving, and John Howland sings the Lord’s Prayer. The words of the prayer reinforce Bess’s newfound belief that all is well when God’s will is done.

    Lisandro Boccacci’s Profound ending

    1. Profound truth: Letting go and moving on is hard but it clears the path to one’s future.

or / and when others hurt us, we still have a choice to either give in to the emotion and hurt back and choose to rise above revenge.

    2. The mother helping the hurt US soldiers despite they were the ones that trashed their home and moved them out. Her kindness… changes the heart of the young soldier… who can’t believe that even after what he did .. she was kind to him… the boy bent on revenge realizes the power of changing hearts… by being strong enough to show kindness to your enemies.

3 The best one i thought of is a scene were a wagon pulls up full of hurt soldiers… they have to put them on the ferry to get them to real doctors that can help. This puts the Cherokees in a very interesting position where they are powerful over the soldiers… they can choose to be cruel and show them a different way.

I have this image of the boy walking towards the ferry with the wild boar meat in one hand and a bloody knife in the other… and revengeful focus in his eyes. he is walking up to the soldiers to kill them… but he gets stopped by the voice of his mother and father… tells the boy to let it go, and that if he goes forward with what he is thinking of doing they wont be able to be a family anymore and that would be a shame since they found each other and they can continue on being a family while others lost so many.

The image of the mother helping the soldiers is the strongest one that I can think of and the boy watching.

    4. I can set it up early on… how the other natives think of the us soldiers, and wanting their revenge…

    5. tells the boy to let it go, and that if he goes forward with what he is thinking of doing they wont be able to be a family anymore and that would be a shame since they found each other and they can continue on being a family while others lost so many.

6 What i learned in this assignment is how delivering the ending with your message at the end, it takes like a zipper effect, all those set ups, and having a focus of the message, it really creates the tread that keeps it all together.

    Pat’s Profound Ending

What I learned doing this assignment is by mapping out your ending, you can ensure it rises to the occasion of being profound.

Design your ending to have a profound impact.

    1. What is your Profound Truth and how will it be delivered powerfully in your ending?

Profound Truth: “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you don’t.”

Ira is constantly in search of approval and admiration in his quest to be a lauded Shakesperean actor. But when his first wife dies and his oldest son struggles in life, he wakens to the fact that he’s favored his career and selfish desires neglecting his wife and son. Upon realizing his errors

    2. How do your lead characters (Change Agent and Transformable Characters) come to an end in a way that represents the completed change?

Ira as a Change Agent for the Transformable London press, who begin righting racist rant reviews about his performances and ultimately, they concede he is a notable performer.

Ira as a transformable character who moves from self-doubt to confidence with the help of Change Agent, Margaret, his first wife, who helps him build a successful career. But selfishly, he is repeatedly unfaithful to her and has failed to help his children and he vows he will turn over a new leaf on her death bed. He follows through with his second wife and their children.

    3. What are the setups/payoffs that complete in the end of this movie, giving it deep meaning?

Answers to will Ira and Margaret get together? Can he be faithful? What is the impact of his absence on her and their son? Will he finally return to the US? Will he be a better husband and father to Amanda and their children?

    4. How are you designing it to have us see an inevitable ending and then making it surprising when it happens?

Ira has ended his European tour to spend more time with his family. He begins planning a US tour and plans to introduce his London family to his US family. He agrees to accept one final performance in Poland where he dies.

    5. What is the Parting Image/Line that leaves us with the Profound Truth in our minds?

Ira is given a royal funeral in Poland as the casket moves through the streets, it’s obvious he is a celebrated man amongst the Polish people. Perhaps the final line will be, “A ceremony fit for a king, he’s finally received respect he deserves.”

    Linda Anderson’s Profound Ending

What I learned doing this assignment is how much easier it is to design the story when you know how it will end for the lead characters.

Profound Truth and how will it be delivered powerfully in your ending:

Accepting differences in spiritual beliefs brings out the love in everyone. This truth will be portrayed in the end when Lt. Chaplain Tanji Wilkes buries Adiba’s Quran.

How lead characters (Change Agent and Transformable Characters) come to an end in a way that represents the completed change:

Protagonist Transformable Character: Chaplain Tanji Wilkes listens deeply and nonjudgmentally instead of philosophizing or preaching when the seatmate, on his way back to US, shares a prayer with him that’s different from any he’s ever heard and tells him about a tragic situation with her daughter.

Antagonist Transformable Character: Lt. Ray Sloan threatens to kill Tanji if he doesn’t resign but relents when Tanji is sympathetic and understanding about Ray’s love for Adiba. Something breaks open in Ray, and he tells the Major that Tanji is a hero who saved Mario from committing suicide.

Change Agent Character: Adiba’s faith in the afterlife has been so strong that she appears to Mario during the confrontation between Ray and Tanji. The kindness of her apparition leads the three men to respond to love instead of fear and anger.

Change Agent Character: Mario’s rigid beliefs in religion and the military leads to betraying Tanji. He’s driven man with grief and rage over the discovery that his best friend Trey died in the bomb blast. When Tanji talks him down from committing suicide, Mario chooses life over death and love over hate. He the one who sees Adiba’s after-death appearance in the fight between Tanji and Ray.

Setup/payoffs that complete in the end of this movie, giving it deep meaning. Designing the inevitable ending and making it surprising:

Tanji: Setup is his conflicts with his father and old beliefs and philosophies that hold him back from being a nonjudgmental military chaplain to becoming a kind and empathetic minister with anyone, under any circumstances.

Ray: Setup is his conflicts with religion and God that make him hate Tanji and dismiss any good a chaplain could do in the military to calling the Major and requesting that Tanji be award the Medal of Freedom for saving Mario’s life.

Adiba: She is conflicted, as a devout Muslim who defies her insurgent brother, when she secretly falls in love with Christian Tanji and confesses her love to him before she dies.

Mario: He starts off as a macho young soldier with strong religious convictions, doing his job as chaplain assistant while resenting Tanji’s weakness and ends by letting Tanji talk him down from committing suicide over news that his best friend, Trey, died in the blast.

    Parting Image/Line for Profound Truth:

    Tanji buries Adiba’s Quran

Ray stops to look at the toppled crucifix at Camp Wolf before leaving the devastation. Prior to his exit, Ray tells Tanji, “I still don’t believe in your God, but I’m starting to believe in you.”

Adiba appears to Mario when Ray is about to kill Tanji.

Mario in suicide vest admits to Tanji that God may be bigger than his human mind understands.
