Linda Anderson’s Intrigue Patterns
What I learned doing this assignment is I thought I’d be rewriting one sentence but wound up rewriting the entire Summary, using the Intrigue Patterns.
-
Tim Barley’s Intrigue Patterns
What I learned from doing this assignment was that it was an amazing tool to get me to think about how some of my lines are written and how to make them even more exciting and read-worthy.
-
Wendy Weising’s Intrigue Patterns
What I learned doing this assignment is that I can really do these quickly if I don’t think about what they should be and just let me imagination come up with something.
-
Subject line: Ben’s Intrigue Patterns
What I learned doing this assignment is
I’m going for perfection when this is just first draft. And because of it I haven’t been able to post my assignment sooner. I don’t know when I will let it go, but it’s something definitely working on.
My BW framework has intrigues I left out when I was writing descriptions because I felt that they didn’t belong in there, but this assignment showed me that they do in fact belong in there. They double the intrigue of what I have already written. Now, I’m using those intrigues in my BW framework to point the reader to certain things.

Avi Kapurala’s Intriguing Patterns
What I learned doing this assignment is: More intriguing plot points can be generated by using these patterns of intrigue on components of the pitch bible.
A. Establish something shocking and point to the terrible things it could mean.
A true, American blue-blood compared to his immigrant rival Viktor, Jacob Swanson was born with a silver spoon that came at a terrible price. To become a worthy scion of the family, Jacob faced years of abuse from his father for his mistakes.
B. Strong statement; question about something underhanded beneath the surface.
Jacob Swanson was born into wealth. But it is rumored that the privilege came at a terrible price for not just Jacob, but his brother and sister as well.
C. Question that points to hidden agendas, hidden identity, conspiracy, etc…
Jacob Swanson was born with a silver spoon. But what price did he pay to be chosen as his family’s heir over his brother and sister? What about growing up as a Swanson left him with pathological hatred for his family?
D. Character 1 is convinced/worried/wondering that Character 2 has done _____________.
Jacob was born with a silver spoon and everyone in his illustrious family takes his success for granted, except his wife, who wonders what terrible price her husband paid to become the Swanson family’s ‘chosen one’.
E. But maybe it is all wrong.
A true, blue-blood compared to self-made immigrant rival Viktor, Jacob was born with a silver spoon. But does it mean he led a charmed life? That he never faced pain, or fear, or shame? That he never lacked for anything because of his family’s billions? Not really. His life was anything but privileged.
F. A Pattern that Leads to Future Consequences.
Born with a silver spoon into a family of winners unlike Viktor, Jacob’s thirst for winning is unquenchable. But the very confidence, charisma and ruthless risk-taking learned at the family table are the traits that will make him take one risk too many in his obsession to defeat Viktor and become No.1.
G. If he does ________________, that means ___Intrigue_____.
Just because Jacob was born into money, doesn’t mean that he didn’t have to earn the keys to the kingdom. In fact, he paid a terrible price getting there.
H. State the mystery.
How did Jacob beat his brother and sister to become the Swanson family’s chosen heir? And how psychotic has he become in the process?
I. Should be/could be _______, but it is even worse.
Jacob Swanson is the epitome of the All-American success story. Handsome, at the top of his field and the heir to the Swanson family fortune, he is a shining star. Except, the road to his success was filled with fear and abuse, which has turned him into a sociopath.
J. Intense language.
Handsome, at the top of his field and the heir to the Swanson family fortune. Beaten, abused and starved as a child to make him learn. Will not stop short of killing or destroying his rivals to get what he wants.

(Laurie Brown’s) Intrigue Patterns
What I learned from doing this assignment is that each intrigue pattern added an element to the line until at the end I put it all together. What I have learned from work with Hal is to just do the assignment and trust that it will come together and it does.
Using Intrigue Patterns, describe some aspect of your story or characters.
1. Pull out your TV Pitch Bible. Read through it and find ONE line you would liketo be more intriguing.
A determined Geri Martin seeks the power she needs to uncover her mother’s mysterious death, by raising in the ranks of the new Army Corp of Nurses where she is forced to weave a complicated web of deception to succeed in a world with oppressive rules that don’t apply to the men.
I replaced it with the statement below, using the process outlined here.
She would have been the all American hero, if she were a man, but instead Geri Martin was humiliated by the oppressive rules of the military and the secrets that led her mother’s gruesome death, on her journey to become the first female colonel in the Army Corp of Nurses.
2. Rethink that line using ALL of these patterns, as I did above:
A. Establish something shocking and point to the terrible things it could mean.
Finding her mother dead in a pool of blood leads Geri Martin to find th power she needs to succeed in the world only to be foiled by the men who were responsible for her mother’s death.
B. Strong statement; question about something underhanded beneath the surface. Powerless over uncovering the mysterious death of her mother, Done in by the
same kind of secrecy that lead to her mother’s mysterious death, Geri Martin’s rise to colonel in the Army Corp of Nurses is plagued by the same secrets that led to her mother’s mysterious death.
C. Question that points to hidden agendas, hidden identity, conspiracy, etc..
In an Army that will not allow women, Geri Martin, must overcome the betrayal of
her father and best friends to rise to be the first colonel in the Army Corp of
Nurses.
D. Character 1 is convinced/worried/wondering that Character 2 has done. Geri
Martin convinced her father and fiancé are behind her mother’s mysterious death and Army inquisition, seeks justice by becoming the first colonel in the Army Corp of Nurses.
E. But maybe it is all wrong.
Geri Martin does everything by the book in her quest to become the first colonel inthe Army Corp of Nurses, so why is she on trial at the Deptartment of
Interior.
• F. A Pattern that Leads to Future Consequences Geri Martin does it all right, military school, army leuitenant, major and finally the first female colonel in the Army Corp of Nurses, so why is she being questioned by the Dept of Interior?
• G. If he does ________________, that means ___Intrigue_____. Just because Geri succeeded in a man’s army doesn’t mean she the men aren’t out to get her.
• H. State the mystery. How does the first colonel in the army corp of nurses get there, without breaking the rules that led to her mother’s death.
• I. Should be/could be _______, but it is even worse. It should be written up in U.S. History, Geri Martin’s rise to first female colonel in the Army Corp of Nurses, but instead led to uncovering the sordid secrets that led to her mother’s mysterious death.
• J. Intense language. She would have been the all American hero, if she were a man, but instead Geri Martin was humiliated by the oppressive rules of the military and the secrets that led her mother’s gruesome death, on her journey to become the first female colonel in the Army Corp of Nurses.

Elizabeth Dickinson’s Intrigue Patterns
What I learned doing this assignment is that I can spend forever doing this. The easiest way to establish intrigue is by asking questions, but I wonder if it’s too much of a cheat or if I’m overusing it when I do. (It starts to sound soap opera-ish…)
Together Piran and Celt forge a unique sign language and psychic connection. However, Celt’s ambivalence toward Piran exacerbates Piran’s newly-discovered sexuality, prompting Piran to feel jealous of Celt’s other influences, and heightens Piran’s desire to be more than just Celt’s tribal brother. Will Piran’s jealousy lead to the undoing of Celt? Will being honest with Celt deepen the relationship? Or will Celt’s misunderstanding of Piran’s motivations drive Piran to a desperate act?

P.G. Sundling’s Intrigue Patterns.
4. Answer the question, “What I learned doing this assignment is…?” and put it at the top of your work.
I found this process time consuming. I hope it becomes faster after. Out of 10 options all three people liked the opening summary with a line of intrigue added better.
1. Pull out your TV Pitch Bible. Read through it and find ONE line you would like to be more intriguing.
“Will he survive the dishonesty of American politics?”
2. Rethink that line using ALL of these patterns, as I did above:
A. Establish something shocking and point to the terrible things it could mean.
Politicians will stab you in the back normally, but Renquist can get to anyone with his wealth and power. Would they conspire to kill None?
B. Strong statement; question about something underhanded beneath the surface.
In the dishonest world of American politics, anyone could be a spy for Renquist.
C. Question that points to hidden agendas, hidden identity, conspiracy, etc..
In the dishonest world of American politics, None finds a spy for Renquist. How many more are there?
D. Character 1 is convinced/worried/wondering that Character 2 has done _____________.
What enemies has Renquist hidden in None’s path?
E. But maybe it is all wrong.
None thought he could survive the dishonest world of American politics. Maybe he was wrong.
F. A Pattern that Leads to Future Consequences
What if an honest man can’t make things better. Could he make them worse?
G. If he does ________________, that means ___Intrigue_____.
If he does play by their rules, that means he’ll be as dirty as the politicians. Can he trick them instead?
H. State the mystery.
Will he survive the dishonesty of American politics with his idealism intact?
I. Should be/could be _______, but it is even worse.
J. Intense language.
Conniving backstabbers lurk at every corner. Is there not one other honest man in Washington?
3. If you discover a more intriguing version of the line, replace the old one in the TV Pitch Bible.
“Can an honest man survive the dishonesty of American politics with his reality TV show magnifying every error?” went into the pitch bible.
