Mod 3 – Lesson 9: Setups For Future Episodes

What I learned doing this assignment…..the process of set-ups for the future is actually fun when you have already built a solid foundation in the BW framework.

The name of the company that hired them is really a front for a large conglomerate, why?

How will alliances and conspiracies amongst the candidates play-out given that they are all competing for the same job?

The isolated location, unique facility and no staff.

Initially, Verna is shown to be the least qualified candidate but early in the season it becomes apparent that few of the candidates are VP material, so why were “they” selected to compete?

The bizarre method of training and competition.

What is the reason for off-limits areas and undergrounds tunnels?

Verna finds an underground luxury apartment with outdated styling and personal photos on the walls and items in the drawers, why is it there?

What will be the “true nature” of the job VP of Special Services since each candidate was given a different job description during the initial interview?

The “Accidental Death” of Karen Hodges in the Pilot proves to be murder in episode 3 so how will that knowledge effect the behavior of the remaining candidates?

    Kim’s Setting Up the Future

What I learned from doing this assignment is…that I’ve already come up with many of these, but I did add the part about Linnie’s phone. It does feel that with every exercise, I come up with at least one more additional incident.

    List of events/character reveals/under-the-surface info:

-Eric’s personality change (subtle, but there – sets up his DID)

-Nat’s more obvious personality changes (DID)

-Linnie on her phone, we learn she has “friends” around the country that she’s met through on-line gaming, and Natalie is intrigued by this (setting up for Linnie’s future meeting of the son Nat gave up for adoption at sixteen)

-Aggie’s mothering (sets up for her need to control Eric)

-Nat’s doll game (sets up how her first personality died)

-Danielle’s anger toward Nat (sets up how Natalie “stole” Eric from Danielle)

-Eric’s inability to stand up for himself with his mom or Danielle (sets up his lack of male ego)

-Eric’s mystery convo (sets up his already happening affair with Claudia)

-Aggie’s mystery convo (Also Claudia, the woman she found a year ago to help Eric cope with his multiple personalities)

-The mystery phone call on Eric’s phone (Claudia)

    Phyllis Setting Up the Future

I learned from this assignment that the set ups can be brief, one-liners as well as larger parts of scenes.

Lesson 9: Set-Ups for Future Episodes

    List of Set-Ups:

    · Once Sasha takes the job, she asks Duncan how you kill this creature. Duncan shows her his private shooting gallery. Would prefer to take an assault rifle, but he needs a concealed weapon. Shows her a TBD gun. Thinking Duncan’s delusional, she says she’ll handle it—she’s used to carrying a firearm.

    · After Delia learns that Duncan hired Sasha, 1) she wants to know everything about this young woman, or 2) she is looking at a dossier she’s had compiled on Sasha and notes that her father disappeared years ago.

    · Set up Duncan’s trusting nature: he doesn’t need any background checks, recommendations on Sasha—that’s not his style.

    · Sasha asks if anyone else knows about these creatures. Duncan thinks so, but he can’t risk Delia finding out he is pursuing these creatures. He knows it sounds crazy.

    · Have a dream sequence to hint that Duncan lost his daughter in an extreme hurricane and he was there.

    · Revealing that Sasha’s father abandoned her and her mom to set up the possibility of his return.

    Big Picture Set-Ups

    · The father-daughter relationship between Duncan and Sasha.

    · Future Pursuit of the Creatures

    · Will Delia be able seize control of Duncan or his money?

    · How does their mission change Duncan and Sasha?

    Lesson 9

    Marcus’ Setting up the Future

What I learned doing this assignment was another group of things to look for that could be used to make the pilot more interesting. In truth, at this point, there was so much in there already, that when I listed all the things I wanted to add in to set up the future, much of it was already there. I found one or two to add in though.

Here’s what I found and used:

Beatrix is a brilliant physicist who will later use that knowledge.

    Beatrix secretly loves Trabeus.

    Trabeus loves her back.

The internet is as important as magic.

    Marius is a vampire.

    Marius hates being a vampire.

Marius is mad at Trabeus and decides to capture Beatrix and hold her hostage.

    Marius will betray Trabeus.

Why is Cassandra so obsessed? No one else is.

Cassandra will seek a powerful spell that may not even be real.

    Marie’s Setting Up The Future

What I learned doing this assignment is to look into all the info I had gathered on my show and make a list of events/character reveals/under-the-surface infor that COULD be set up in the pilot and use only the obvious ones and see which ones I would use in the pilot.

    BIG PICTURE SETUPS:

. Who is Skyler? Is he a fallen Angel?

. Why is Merrill so involved with Skyler? What’s at risk for her?

    – Is Rose going to be safe searching for her father?

    – Will Rose ever reach her dream of becoming nominated for the Nobel Prize?

LIST OF INFO that could be set up in the pilot:

    About Skyler and Merrill

Who is Skyler, where does he come from? Why is Merrill so afraid?

Skyler was a human boy (12) watched by his easily distracted Guardian Angel Merrill when he stole his mum’s car with his little brother, crashed and his little brother died.

Skyler’s mum is an adoptive mum. His brother was her only child. He was so precious to her that she cannot forgive Skyler.

    – Skyler, devastated and unable to bear the guilt and the grief of his brother’s death attempts to commit suicide. He jumps off a high cliff at the least expected moment and Merrill is only able to slow his fall. He doesn’t die but he is left in a coma on a hospital bed.

    – Merrill brings Skyler to the gate of Heaven and leaves him there. That’s where his body is found by the other angels. He is nacked, wet and unconscious. His body is only covered by an angel dress, laid on top of him.

    – Merrill hides what happens because her mentor Angel Peter orders her to do so.

She has failed her assignment to guide and protect Skyler. She is lucky he hasn’t died because she would have become a fallen angel for eternity.

Now, she must watch him without him knowing who she is.

If he redeems himself as a Guardian Angel and can save someone’s life in exchange for the death he had caused, Skyler will be allowed to return to his body on earth.

    – Skyler’s human body is not dead. He is still in a coma, watched by his father who sits by his side every day and works online.

    – Skyler will have to make a choice to return to his body or to remain an angel for eternity.

    – He will chose to be a human and discover why his parents split up and how his mum got Alzheimer’s after his fall. Eventually his father will tell him that she had tried to kill him.

    – Skyler is also a Cyber Prodigy and will eventually meet Rose although he doesn’t remember his life as an angel and doesn’t know he had met her before.

    – Skyler will fight Rose, believing she is a dangerous hacker until he will discover she works under cover and they are on the same side.

    – Skyler and Rose will eventually fall in love.

    – Rose will get nominated for the Nobel Prize, thanks to Skyler helping her and staying out of the limelight.

    _____________________________________________________________

SETUP In the pilot, I will show how Skyler was found at the gate of heaven. How he has fear of falling and traumatic memories he can’t explain. That angels don’t have memories of earth. Only Fallen Angels have.

Could he be a fallen angel?

When on earth in charge of Rose, he shows an attraction to being bad! – The more Rose is out of control and in danger, the more Skyler enjoys it!

    ______________________________________________________

    About Rose and Skyler

    – Skyler provides Rose with celestial information that makes her a prodigy.

    – Rose’s mother is hiding something from her past and doesn’t want Rose to find out who her father is.

    – Rose is invited to train in a prestigious Government Cyber Security agency. She never meets the big boss. He only works online. He will happen to be Skyler’s dad.

    – Rose has the typical behavior of a fatherless daughter and is in search of a father figure. And a psychologist diagnoses her.

    – Rose is determined to find her father. She will meet a first one who is not what he pretends to be.

    – Rose will find a second potential father, a very boring man who will actually be toxic to her life (?)

    – When Rose will discover who is a real father, it will be a bomb ! (a famous International politician or something like that who was involved in a robery with her mum and if he would acknowledge he was the father of Rose, that would prove that he had been part of this robery and distroy his career ? He is also a scary man with dangerous bodyguard and there is a lot at stake for him – still has to be brainstormed)

    – Logan and Rose are 2 prodigies competing for the first place and Logan steals Rose’s work but once Rose will be undercover, she will have her revenge on him and then he will try to corner her and she will be saved by her Guardian Angel etc…

    – Rose works undercover for the government but Skyler misses the moment where the decision is made because he is caught up into his own wilderness.

    – The more Skyler tries to get Rose away from the bad guys, the more he puts her in danger because he doesn’t know she is undercover.

    ____________________________________

SETUP in the pilot, I will show that Rose is a fatherless daughter in search of her father despite her mother forbidding her to ever try to find him and how Rose finds a first potential father, a dangerous Cyber Lord who is actually not her father but pretends to be.

I will show how Rose goes from working officially to working undercover without Skyler knowledge.

What I learned: Make sure future episodes and seasons are set up in the pilot.

I found that the setup that need to be in the pilot are in the outline…but I also saw one of the setups in a new light–the last one on this list. Going over the setup again made me realize that I need to make sure this aspect is fully developed.

BLANK SLATE BIG PICTURE SETUPS IN THE PILOT

    · How will Joshua be able to get back to the baseline?

    · How will being thrust into a different reality challenge Joshua?

    · How will it change Joshua?

    · What do the spies who were posing as scientists at the experiment want?

    · What did Joshua see just before the explosion that makes him so valuable to all of the interested parties (the agents, Salva, Henna, Leila)?

    Diana’s Setting Up the Future

What I learned: It was helpful to list the character reveals and subtext to set up the series in the pilot. I hadn’t thought about setting things up, bit by bit. But it makes total sense. You need to set up before you reveal. I was able to go back and revise a few things to avoid revealing too much in the pilot, while still keeping it engaging.

    Surviving Lupe Pilot Outline

Teaser: Tropical Storm Lupe destroys houses in the Bahamas. Winds howling, branches flying, windows boarded over. Streets flooded. Voiceover of potential of Lupe turning into a Category 5 hurricane when it hits the coast of Florida. Cut to: Court where head juror reads they have convicted a man on two counts of pedophila: 1) possession and 2) dissemination of child pornograpy. Judge sentences man to three years in max security prison. We don’t see who is being cuffed. Just the back of a man as the voiceover continues to warn Florida residents to evacuate, in case Lupe increases in power and becomes the worst hurricane to ever touch down in our nation’s history.

[Alternatively, could be something to do with santeria]

Act 1: Jake having breakfast with family and Marco. Lupe is in a mood. Tells Jake he’s an idiot to leave now. Jake dismisses threat of hurricane and says he’s a keynote speaker and is going to the medical conference, in spite of prediction that tropical storm will turn into the worst hurricane in history and land in a matter of days. He says they’ve been saying that for months about other hurricanes. And no hurricanes have landed. It’s just rained hard, so he’s not worried and thinks Lupe is overreacting per usual. Jake teases the kids about wanting something, since they’re having breakfast with the rest of the family, which is not their normal.

Turning point: Jake ignores Lupe’s insults and decides to go to the conference.

Act 2: Lupe has a tantrum. Jake ignores her. She has the TV blaring with the news reporting that the tropical storm is growing stronger and headed their way. They fight over the volume. Resolute, Jake packs and leaves as Lupe follows him, screaming, threatening divorce if he leaves. Jake tells her go ahead. Lupe knows she’s beat and storms back upstairs and finds Dolores casting a spell in her room, nodding as she lights several candles.

Turning point: Jake leaves for conference.

Act 3: Next day news reports Tropical Storm Lupe is growing stronger and headed their way. Lupe rushes everyone to pack so they can get out of the house. Marco walks into Jake’s office and sticks a thumb drive into Jake’s computer. Dolores is packing santeria shit calmly while everyone else is rushing. She is more focused on the lit candles on her altar than packing. This stresses Lupe out, because they need to go. NOW. Marco has returned with a team of movers who clear out the house FAST. The only items left are Jake’s clothes, office furniture, and computer.

Turning point: Tropical storm predicted to turn into a Category 5 hurricane and hit land by nightfall.

Act 4: Hurricane is about to touch down. All the windows in Jake’s house have been boarded up. The wind is strong, branches are blowing across the yard. Jake calls to check on the family. Lupe ignores his call and tosses everyone’s phones outside in the bushes. It’s very difficult to hear each other outside. They have to yell to be heard. Lupe rushes everyone out of the house. Dolores is the last one out. As she exits, she looks up at the sky and smiles.

Turning point: Lupe and family leave at the last possible moment.

Act 5: Lupe is in a posh hotel out of state with kids and Dolores. Everyone has changed their appearance. Folders with their new identities are on the bed. Jake comes home to an empty house. Where is everyone? He walks through the house and notices he has been robbed. Furious, he dials Lupe again. Voicemail. He throws his phone and shatters a glass cabinet in the kitchen. He reaches to pour himself a drink and the police show up. Jake gives them photos to place on TV so they can find his mising family. Jake is confused because the police do not seem interested in his family, but rather his computer and what’s on it.

Turning point: Jake shares pic of Lupe with media to place a photo of Lupe on TV. Jake is relieved when he sees cops at the door. He tells them his family is missing and that he’s been robbed. The police seem disinterested in Jake’s story and instead question him about the child porn on his computer that he has been distributing. He is confused, because he wouldn’t have any of that on his computer. Why won’t they help him? And what’s this about a child pornography ring? Don’t they know he’s a pediatrician?
