What we learned doing this assignment was that all of these major series setups were already included in our pilot outline based on the work we’ve already done. We are really feeling the momentum now and completely trust this entire process. Some of the decisions we got stuck on or were difficult earlier in the course are now making the final stages of the outline so much easier.

MAJOR FUTURE SERIES SET UP IN THE PILOT:

    • What future lifestyle/swinger/sex situations will Liz help with?
    • Who else will find out about Liz and Eric’s lifestyle?
    • How will being public affect Liz and Eric’s marriage?
    • How far will Liz go with the sexpert idea?
    • Will Liz and Eric’s daughter find out?
    • What will happen with Michelle’s marriage?
    • What is the backstory/history between Liz and her trans dad and will he come out?

    Megan’s Setting Up The Future

What I learned doing this assignment is… that in order to prepare for the future of my series, I need to include those open loops now, in the pilot. Anything I can set up now I should, especially if it’s related to the main problem of the series.

On a side note, listening to the audio from Hal’s conversation on mystery and open loops, as well as the Q & A that followed, gave me the lightbulb moment I needed to figure out why my teaser wasn’t working. I replanned it with a greater focus on action and on making the genre clear.

Events/character reveals/under-the-surface info that COULD be set up in the pilot:

    Dylan’s alcoholism (Lexie’s father)

Betsy’s protective nature in regards to her friendship with Lexie

Revise the teaser to clarify genre and add action: Alexis as an undercover agent of financial crimes

    Competition with Sterling

    Brett’s flirtation with Alexis

    Intro Cerise

    Intro Betsy’s little brother Marcus

Suzanne is setting up the future …

What I learned is that I already have most of this (yay!) because of all the previous work. But it also feels like I could do this assignment after every other assignment, because it keeps changing.

    Future Events/Reveals/Under the Surface

    What is New Orleans

    Who are Tilda’s family

    How did they get power

What kind of power is it

Who had it in the past

Who is trying to get it now

    How many legends/myths are true

What is (everyone’s) backstory and connection

    What happened to Grandmere

    What happens if Tilda fails

How do the stakes keep rising

How are history and geography connected

    What does (everyone) want

How will this affect the city/Gulf/world

    Sharilyn’s setting up the Future

What I learned doing this assignment is…most episodic plots start in the pilot.

I just wanna use the events/character reveals/under-the-surface Info that is already in the pilot. I feel like I am muddling the Big Picture of the series with too much stuff. If anything I need to brainstorm more to further flesh out HOW these things can show up.

Events (That are) *(That could be)

➢ Weight loss journey * Exposure to the “soft” porn world

➢ Viral video montage * Ms. Chen fighting w/her soon-2B-ex

    ➢ Losing a baby

    ➢ Deflating Kandy

    ➢ Erin’s Arrest(?)

➢ 1st Responders Fat Shaming, refusing to help

    ➢ Erin food fucking

➢ Ms. Chen taste testing Erin’s food

    ➢ Erin teaching migrant kids

Character reveals (That are) *(That could be)

➢ Erin is a food freak *Ms. Chen’s deportation status

➢ Erin is not a virgin * Erin’s biological parents

➢ Mi-Ya resents her mother’s devotion to Erin * Patty into porn

➢ Ms. Chen’s tough love is self serving

➢ Stu&Lu don’t want Erin to grow up, out, discover her biological parents

➢ Patty struggles with being non-binary, keeping her man-junk, being religious

    ➢ Patty’s parents’ cruelty

➢ Neighbor Guy’s a creeper who is working for who??

    ➢ Mi-Ya has a fat-fashion fantasy career

➢ Walley is vulnerable and just wants to have success

Under-the-surface Info (That is) (That could be)

➢ Erin is not innocent * Fat folks fuck too!

➢ Walley is not the only one profiting off of Erin

➢ Walley is not unethical, just misguided

➢ Kandy Kane is Walley’s conscious

    Tom’s Setting Up The Future

What I learned in this lesson is to streamline my setups so that they follow the primary action. Based on prior work I could have listed off 20-30 setups, but based on the theme, structure and genre of the story, I want to keep the action lean and moving. I believe I am on track to accomplish that.

Setup 1: How can altering the course of one event change the trajectory of mankind?

Setup 2: Who are Twyla, Elliot and the Janitor and what is their motive?

Setup 3: How did Elliot and Twyla get the group to attend these support group meetings?

Setup 4: Why did they choose Florida Man to lead the group?

Setup 5: Who is Elliot conspiring with?

Setup 6: Who tipped Florida Man off about the protest being a false flag event?

Setup 7: Is this group capable of saving humanity?

Setup 8: How will this group save humanity from extinction?

Setup 9: How can Twyla, Elliot and the Janitor see into the future?

Setup 10: What secrets are the group members keeping and how will they come to the surface?
