I’m not sure how to consider what I learned, as this has largely been the format I create outlines in. So it’s largely been my step 1, but I suppose I learned how to dissect the outline into its core components and see the process itemized on how it gets to that point.
EXT – CHARLOTTE’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Eerie noises from a dark, creepy old house on a stormy night. Then a male voice is yelling, while a female voice is screaming.
INT – CHARLOTTE’S HOUSE – NIGHT
The house is even creepier inside. The noises, yelling and screaming continue, followed by a gunshot. At that point, the screaming ends. A woman’s bloody body lies lifeless.
A silhouette carries a gun as he cases the house.
Charlotte hides behind cover in the attic.
The silhouette lights the house on fire and is engulfed in the flames. While burning, he turns the gun on himself and kills himself.
In the attic smoke, and then the flames, traps Charlotte in the attic, with no means of escape. She is forced by the approaching flames to the window. Left with no other choice, she jumps from the window.
EXT – CHARLOTTE’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Charlotte’s body lies in the yard, impaled by the slats of a picket fence.
EXT – ALYSSA’S HOUSE – DAY
A family moves boxes from a moving van into the house next door to the abandoned, burned out remains of Alyssa’s house. Mother, Laura, and her two children. Daughter Alyssa (16) and son Kodi (10).
While moving the boxes, Alyssa’s attention is drawn to the creepy house next door. She cautiously approaches the house, sensing evil, while hearing strange, eerie cries and moans coming from the house. For a moment, she thinks she sees a figure standing at the attic window. She takes a second look and there is no one there, but the curtains are moving.
Laura returns Alyssa to the present, telling her to get back to work and help move everything inside. Alyssa rolls her eyes, clearly not into it. She is obviously not happy about moving in.
As Alyssa picks up a box, a couple teenage girls pass by and smugly talk to her. They ask where she moved from, and laugh among themselves in a superior manner, feeling that Alyssa is clearly not worthy of their presence, or association with them.
They warn Alyssa to stay away from the haunted house next door, then strut smugly off, laughing at Alyssa. Alyssa instantly dislikes them, and is pretty pissed off, now even more unhappy about being in this new town, and wanting to pounce on the obnoxious girls and beat the shit out of them.
INT – SCHOOL – DAY
Alyssa arrives at school and immediately sees the teenage girls, surrounded by their clique. They see her, whisper to their friends, and they all laugh as Alyssa passes by.
During school, Charlotte approaches Alyssa and introduces herself, seemingly anxious to make friends with her. Alyssa is polite, but feels uneasy about her. Alyssa doesn’t realize that, in Sixth Sense style, no one else at school acknowledges Charlotte, nor has any interaction whatsoever with her.
Charlotte keeps talking to Alyssa and is immediately rather clingy. Despite having no other friends, Alyssa isn’t anxious to become fast friends with her. Yet it seems impossible to avoid her, or to keep her at arm’s length.
EXT – RESIDENTIAL STREET – DAY
As Alyssa walks home from school, Charlotte bounds up to her, all bubbly and friendly. Alyssa can’t believe the only girl who seems to want to be friends with her is the one girl she doesn’t want to be friends with.
Charlotte insist on walking home with Alyssa. They arrive at Alyssa’s house, and she quickly tries to ‘dismiss’ Charlotte, telling her this is her house. Alyssa just smiles, and skips off. Alyssa watches her and is shocked to see her run up to the abandoned house next door and go inside. Alyssa is sure no one can actually live there, and has no idea what Charlotte is doing.
EXT – CHARLOTTE’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Alyssa stands outside the house, examining it. She slowly goes to the front door and pushes it open.
INT – CHARLOTTE’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Alyssa enters to find the house dark and obviously abandoned. She slowly goes further inside. She tries the light switch, but nothing happens.
As she looks around, she hears creaks, groans, and eerie moans from within the house. She calls out Charlotte’s name, but hears only the same strange noises in response. She hears what sounds like a scream, and then a gunshot, echoing from upstairs. Alyssa runs away.
EXT – ALYSSA’S HOUSE – DAY
Charlotte walks up as Alyssa is outside playing with Kodi. She tries to get Alyssa to go somewhere with her, but Alyssa declines, saying she needs to watch Kodi, and that they have some things planned.
Charlotte acknowledges this but, as she walks away, she is clearly pissed at Alyssa’s attention being dominated by Kodi.
EXT – STREET – EVENING
Alyssa and Kodi ride bikes together as cars speed by. Suddenly, Kodi’s bike swerves into the street, directly in front of a speeding car, which hits Kodi, knocking him literally out of his shoes. Kodi’s body is thrown about 100 feet and lands in an explosive pool of blood. He is instantly killed.
Across the street, Charlotte smiles to herself, then turns and walks away.
INT – SCHOOL – DAY
Alyssa sits alone, and it’s evident she’s been crying. Charlotte approaches her, says how sorry she is to hear about Kodi, and pushes herself onto Alyssa, telling her she can talk to her, and use her shoulder to cry on. Alyssa is too numb to want to do that, plus is by now even more uneasy about Charlotte. She thanks Charlotte politely, but says she would rather be alone.
Charlotte leaves, but it’s obvious to the viewer than she isn’t at all happy about being spurned like that.
EXT – ALYSSA’S HOUSE – DAY
Charlotte comes over as Alyssa is in the yard, and again pushes herself onto Alyssa, reminding her that she is there for her. Alyssa is about to decline again, but Laura leaves the house, and reminds Alyssa that they need to go to the mortuary to pick out Kodi’s coffin. Laura catches herself, fighting back tears, as she and Alyssa hug and cry on each other’s shoulders.
Laura asks who Charlotte is and Alyssa is pretty dismissive of her. She says she’s no one, just a girl from school.
Since Laura and Alyssa need to leave, Charlotte excuses herself but, as she walks away, she is obviously very pissed off.
EXT – ALYSSA’S HOUSE – EVENING
Alyssa sits alone on the porch as a car drives up. Alyssa’s best friend from her old town, and her boyfriend, get out of the car.
As Charlotte angrily watches from across the bushes between the houses, Alyssa and her friend hug each other, and Alyssa bursts into tears.
EXT – CHARLOTTE’S HOUSE / ALYSSA’S HOUSE – DAY
Charlotte watches from the attic as Alyssa, Laura, and Alyssa’s friends leave the house together. Charlotte angrily throws the curtains closed and turns away.
INT – ALYSSA’S HOUSE – NIGHT
As Laura, Alyssa and her friends go about normal activities, Laura experiences a few ‘near misses’ where freak, but seemingly explainable dangers present themselves, to where she could have been injured or killed.
INT – ALYSSA’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Charlotte suddenly appears in the house as Laura, Alyssa and her friends finish dinner and put a movie on. Charlotte launches a paranormal attack, not visible to the others, in which Laura is killed when debris falls onto her.
(this is still a work in progress)

This is now the completed version.

Kodi sees her interest in the house and pauses to pay a little attention to it as well. He is very empathic and senses something very evil in the house. He tells Alyssa this, and warns her to keep clear of the house.
Laura returns Alyssa to the present, telling her to get back to work and help move everything inside. Alyssa rolls her eyes, clearly not into it. She is obviously not happy about moving in.

Alyssa is pretty cold toward her mother, resenting her for making her move to this new town, and to leave her friends. Kodi tries to be the peacemaker, telling Alyssa to be a little more understanding of their mom. Alyssa gives Kodi a big hug, rather than getting pissed at him, showing how caring and protective she is of her little brother.

INT – ALYSSA’S HOUSE – EVENING
Alyssa and Kodi talk. Kodi asks Alyssa about Charlotte, and he tells her he has a really bad feeling about her. He says he feels something really dark and bad about her, and says he thinks Alyssa should be very careful about her, and not to trust her.

Laura asks who Charlotte is and Alyssa is pretty dismissive of her. She says she’s no one, just a girl from school.
Since Laura and Alyssa need to leave, Charlotte excuses herself but, as she walks away, she is obviously very pissed off.
Laura is immediately put off by Charlotte, and intentionally keeps her close to her and, by extension, away from Charlotte. She just senses that Charlotte would be destructive, rather than conducive, to helping Alyssa cope with their loss of Kodi. Laura has to be strong in facing the tragedy of Kodi’s death for her daughter’s sake, and puts her mind to helping her deal with it.
Alyssa wakes up in a cold sweat from a nightmare, in which a zombie-like Kodi tries to warn her of danger coming her way.
INT – SCHOOL – DAY
Charlotte again approaches Alyssa at school, but Alyssa is getting very creeped out by her by this point. Alyssa becomes somewhat forceful in letting Charlotte know that she wants to be by herself, and doesn’t want to hang out with Charlotte. She is by now no longer caring about being polite as, clearly, Charlotte hasn’t gotten the hint.
INT – ALYSSA’S HOUSE – NIGHT
As Laura, Alyssa and her friends go about normal activities, Laura and Alyssa’s friends experience a few ‘near misses’ where freak, but seemingly explainable dangers present themselves, to where she could have been injured or killed.
Alyssa and her friends discuss what’s been happening. Alyssa tells them about Charlotte and how she feels very leery of her. The boyfriend wants to confront Charlotte, but Alyssa and her friend ask him what they’re supposed to say to her. None of them believe on a rational level that Charlotte could be terrorizing them because, of course, that would make no logical sense. So he backs down.
INT – CHARLOTTE’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Alyssa again ventures into Charlotte’s house. She hears increasing eerie sounds and screaming but, this time, also sees quick, flashing images of fire engulfing the house. She closes her eyes and, when she opens them, the images and sounds of screaming are gone. She rushes from the house.
INT – ALYSSA’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Charlotte suddenly appears in the house as Laura, Alyssa and her friends finish dinner and put a movie on. Charlotte launches a paranormal attack, not visible to the others, in which Laura is killed when debris falls onto her, as Alyssa tries desperately to save her. As Laura dies, eerie laughter echoes through the house.
INT – ALYSSA’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Alyssa and her friends now believe, despite it seemingly physically impossible, that Charlotte is somehow terrorizing Alyssa’s family, and decides to go on the attack, to take the battle to Charlotte, and confront her, and get Charlotte to leave Alyssa alone. The boyfriend kind of takes charge and leads the group in an all out assault on Charlotte.
INT – CHARLOTTE’S HOUSE – NIGHT
The three kids go to Charlotte’s house to confront her. A battle to the death ensues, where Charlotte appears in her fully evil and paranormal splendor. She tells Alyssa that all she had to do was be her friend and everything would have been okay. Alyssa accuses Charlotte of killing Kodi and Laura, and says she’s going to kill her for it.
Charlotte disapparates and all hell breaks loose in the house. The kids freak and try to find Charlotte, who can appear and disappear at will, and can kinetically control physical objects and threaten the kids with them.
Alyssa’s best friend is the first to fall while battling Charlotte. Charlotte causes her to go up in flames in a case of spontaneous combustion, and she burns to death in agony, while images of Charlotte’s father burning to death flash onscreen. While burning, she falls into a tub of water, where the flames are extinguished, showing her dead, charred body floating in the water.
We see that Charlotte’s powers are much more powerful now, seemingly more powerful within her own lair. She is also demonstrating a particular cruelty, killing Alyssa’s friends in a manner that mirrors the circumstances of her own death.
The boyfriend is the next to die. Charlotte forces him to flee into the attic, where she pushes him over the stairs balcony. He falls to two stories to the main floor, where he breaks through the floor and lands on the cement basement floor with a blood-splattering thud, where is dies.
Now it’s just Alyssa and Charlotte. Alyssa now understands Charlotte a lot better and, with everyone she cares about now dead, she has nothing to lose. She has also learned somehow just how Charlotte died. She also figures that, since Charlotte died once, maybe she can again. And as Charlotte has now become almost completely physical, killing her seems possible.
So she leads Charlotte to the attic but Charlotte outmaneuvers her and gets her trapped by the window, to where it looks like Alyssa is going to die in the same manner that Charlotte did. However, just as Charlotte strikes, Alyssa is able to knock her out of the way with a weapon of convenience. Alyssa then runs from the attic, and down the stairs.
Alyssa runs down the stairs and to the front door. But just as she does, Charlotte appears at the bottom of the stairs, and kinetically piles stacks of furniture in front of the door, blocking Alyssa’s escape.
Alyssa stops and slowly turns around, facing Charlotte, who vows to kill Alyssa, and the final battle is on. Charlotte is bleeding from the wound she got in the attic, giving Alyssa a sense of confidence that she is now physical enough that she can be killed. She has also overused her powers to where, between that and her wounds, she is weakening. So attempts to throw dangers in Alyssa’s way kinetically as they fight, but is less and less able to do so.
Nevertheless, Charlotte is winning the battle. She gets Alyssa pinned and attempts to take the kill strike. As she does, Alyssa sees a shard of wood sticking out from the stairs and shoves Charlotte back toward it. The shard impales Charlotte, and traps her, as she can’t escape the large chunk of wood sticking through her body, and attached to the stairs.
In Charlotte’s now severely weakened state, she can no longer maintain her kinetic control over the physical objects around her, and the pile of furniture blocking the door falls away. Alyssa slowly walks to the door. As she approaches it, she tells Charlotte that this is for her mother, and for Kodi. She tells Charlotte to burn in hell, then lights the house on fire, then casually strolls through the front door.
The film closes with Alyssa slowly walking from the house as the fire rages behind her, completely engulfing the house, as Charlotte’s eerie, tortured screams echo in the night. We are left to believe Charlotte has been destroyed, but it is not confirmed, obviously opening up the opportunity for the sequel.

INT. – BASEMENT COAL ROOM – NIGHT

3. In this lesson I learned how simple it is to take a difficult to read outline and make it readable in scenes.
1. Follow the steps above to create your readable outline.
ACT 1 — SET UP FOR HORROR
INT. DININGROOM – DAY
WORKER ONE toils away at laying new wallpaper in a freshly redone empty room. Worker One fails to notice the radio coming to life as he rolls the wallpaper on. Screams start to emanate from the radio as WORKER TWO, looking very similar to Worker One, approaches in a trancelike state with a hammer in hand. He attacks Worker One with the hammer, hitting him over and over again.
INT. DININGROOM – DAY
A different radio is playing strange sounds as HUSBAND tries to get it to work properly, growing frustrated. SON sits at the table eagerly awaiting food as YOUNGER DAUGHTER sits strapped in next to the table. CARETAKER rushes around the table, setting plates down as she does. Caretaker nearly runs into OLDER DAUGHTER as Older Daughter comes walking into the room on her phone. Older Daughter tries to finish her call. As the family settles and starts to eat, MOTHER finally arrives. The family seems unsurprised as Mother takes her seat and begins eating late. Caretaker asks how things are. Mother seems exhausted.
GRANDMOTHER sits in her room staring out her window and listening to the muffled sounds of the conversation below.
The radio springs back to life with a hiss and Husband slams the top of the device in frustration. He throws it in the garbage, sending Mother into a fit. Caretaker tries to calm the situation while Older Daughter throws up her arms in disbelief. Older Daughter makes a mother for Son to leave the room and grabs Younger Daughter as Husband, Mother, and Caretaker try to settle things.
INT. FOYER – DAY
The Older Daughter hears the doorbell ring. She goes to answer the door it is the NEIGHBOR. Outside, a number of cars are leaving. Neighbor suggests that it might be a good idea to come with them before the lockdown goes into effect and that while being couped up in any house can drive a person nutty, this particular house always seemed particularly chilly. The Older Daughter asks how long they have to make the decision. As Neighbor explains, Mother comes down the stairs and gives a strained smile. Mother explains that there is no possible way they can leave as Grandmother is far to ill. They’ll just have to wait it out. Mother leaves and Older Daughter explains that houses are all basically the same. Their biggest problem is a family in turmoil.
Neighbor tells Older Daughter that they are welcome to move down the street to Neighbor’s house if they need to and hands Older Daughter a key. Neighbor leaves.
Older Daughter walks into the LIVINGROOM and asks Mother if she explained the situation. Mother waves it off and Older Daughter explains to Son, Younger Daughter, Husband, and Caretaker. Caretaker nods resolutely and Son does not believe that the quarantine is real. Husband casts blame on Mother for shooting down the idea of leaving and suggests Mother is the real problem here. Mother leaves and we can hear her upstairs addressing Grandmother.
INT. DINING ROOM – DAY
A few weeks have passed and the family is noticeably stressed. The family can see armed patrols moving about outside.
EXT. HOUSE – DAY
Son notices the tree shadow is bent strangely one day while looking out the window. He catches Older Daughter’s attention and she makes her way outside into the yard. Son follows and they meet with Caretaker on the lawn. They follow the shadow and realize it is pointing to a small marker in the ground. As they approach, Mother comes running out asking what possessed them to go outside with he patrols going around. There are a multitude of dead animals around the marker.
As Mother approaches the market, she faints and hits her head on the rock. Panicking, Older Daughter has Caretaker help her carry Mother inside while directing Son to come inside with them. They rush her to a bed to provide medical assistance.
INT. HOUSE – DAY
Days pass and things at the house have changed. Mother is back on her feet, but mostly stays in her room. Older Daughter is taking care of Grandma now. Grandma is less responsive than ever. Younger Daughter hasn’t stopped crying for days. Son is trying to provide support with Caretaker. Husband has gone back to his workroom and rarely leaves.
INT. DINNING ROOM – NIGHT
During dinner Mother grows frustrated with Younger Daughter crying and blames Older Daughter for not taking care of her. Husband starts arguing with Mother. He grabs her wrist and discovers a mark. Husband is accused of creating mark on Mother by Son and Husband goes to strike Son, but begs off and leaves instead. Mother looks down at the marks and as Caretaker steps in to help, Mother leaves.
Caretaker suddenly leaves as well. Older Daughter tells Son to look after Younger Daughter and follows Caretaker. Older Daughter finds Caretaker in the attic looking at old books. Caretaker is researching the houses history.
ACT 2 — THE POINT OF NO RETURN
INT. HOUSE – DAY
Older Daughter receives their weekly rations from the ration patrol and closes the door. Son and Caretaker help her to move the food into the kitchen. Everyone is looking very down.
As the food is being stored by Son, Caretaker, and Older Daughter, Mother goes into Grandma’s room for the first time in weeks. Mother seems surprisingly upbeat. Grandma sees a horrid face in the window and turns around to see Mother. Mother notices this and closes the door behind her, gently before locking it. Mother and Grandma talk and Grandma utters some religious words as Mother moves closer. They do nothing. Mother moves around to the bed and snags a pillow. She gets Grandma against a wall and suffocates her, then cries softly and turns Grandma back to the window. Mother leaves and returns to her own room.
Older Daughter, Son, and Caretaker move Grandma into the freezer downstairs to keep her from decomposing. They are distraught. Caretaker explains some of the history of the house. About how it seems to drive people nutty and how only 10 years ago a renovator killer his work partner and then starved to death in the basement. He seemed bound to the house.
MIDPOINT: The monster is worse than we thought!
INT. DINNING ROOM – NIGHT
Realizing the Younger Daughter always cries when Mother is around, Mother decides to poison Younger Daughter to keep Mother’s secret. Younger Daughter starts foaming at the dinner table and Son goes outside looking for help. PATROL MEMBER panics and shoots Son in full view of the family. The family, including Mother, look on – horrified.
ACT 3 — FULL OUT HORROR

Older Daughter and Caretaker move to a second strategy of fleeing from Mother. The workroom has a bolt on the door so they try to make their way to that room. The door is locked – they assume the key must have been taken to Mother’s room.
INT. MOTHER’S ROOM – NIGHT
Older Daughter and Caretaker arrive in Mother’s room. They find pictures of Husband cheating and papers Older Daughter had kept from Mother. They realize the Spirit feeds its victims paranoia. Caretaker presents a book. It has the same symbol that the marker in the yard had. Caretaker believes that destroying the book will destroy the Spirit. Caretaker tries to light it on fire, but the book doesn’t burn. Mother appears. Older Daughter and Caretaker flee into the basement, but not before Mother lands a deep gash on Older Daughter with a pair of scissors.
INT. BASEMENT – NIGHT
Older Daughter and Caretaker flee over a dangerous wooden floor. Caretaker props a dying Older Daughter up along the wall as they wait. Mother tries to follow, but she falls through the flooring and dies on a piece of jagged wood. As Mother dies and Caretaker looks on, as Older Daughter breathes a sigh of relief. As Caretaker goes to assist Older Daughter up, Older Daughter stabs Caretaker.
INT. POLICE STATION – DAY

Dan’s Horror Outline Version 1
What I learned doing this assignment is… there’s still more I need to develop, but this was a great way to break the story and produce the spine of the outline, so to speak.
INT – SUBURBAN HOME
A YOUNG BOY, 10, is trying to escape his home, as he’s pursued by an unseen force. He stops as he sees: two front doors. He doesn’t know which one to pick. With the figure approaching, he opens the left door and enters it.
Suddenly, he’s back in his room. He knows he fucked up, and starts screaming as a shadowy figure approaches him. The boy’s eyes grow wide… then wider… then impossibly, abnormally wide, as the top of his head bends backwards like someone’s trying to pry him open.
INT – THERAPY ROOM
KENDALL GRADY, 16, has her eyes closed while her therapist tries to get her to talk about an incident. Her therapist explains that Kendall isn’t helping herself by ignoring the facts around her. Just because her drug use led to a tragedy doesn’t mean she’s a drug addict; but at the same time, she has to hold herself accountable for what happened.
Kendall leaves therapy to see her mom, NORA GRADY, early 40s, waiting in the car with fast food. Nora comes across super supportive. Kendall explains that her therapist suggested she touch base with Austin and set the record straight. Kendall wonders if maybe he laced her joint that day by accident – to which Nora purses her lips disapprovingly.
The pair head home, where they see Kendall’s father/Nora’s husband JACK GRADY, 40s, working away on his laptop, talking about an upcoming estate sale.
The doorbell rings and it’s Austin, 17, Kendall’s friend, asking if he could talk to her. They talk outside on the front porch. Austin says he didn’t know what else to do because Kendall wasn’t responding to him: he wants to know how she’s doing, and to know that he would never hurt her in any way. Kendall says she’s doing okay, but the details of that day are still fuzzy, and she isn’t sure if she can trust Austin again. They get into an argument when Austin tries to challenge Kendall’s narrative of what happened; Kendall dismisses him and tells him to leave.
Inside, Nora tells Jack she doesn’t think it’s a good idea for Kendall to be talking to Austin, and she doesn’t trust leaving Kendall by herself this week when they both have work. Jack protests, but when Kendall comes inside, he tells her he needs her help at an estate sale tomorrow. She agrees to go, reluctantly. Nora is satisfied.
INT – SUBURBAN HOME/ESTATE SALE
Kendall joins Jack at the estate sale, which happens to be in the house of the boy that was killed in the opening scene. Jack tells Kendall that the family disappeared, and police aren’t sure what happened to them. Probably involved in shady business and left the country.
While sifting through the objects, Kendall finds an interesting looking KALEIDOSCOPE. She puts it to her eye and is awestruck by the almost impossible display of colors. The kaleidoscope moves in an otherworldly way – unlike any kaleidoscope she’s ever seen. She stops when she hears what sounds like the faint echo of the boy screaming. She looks around the house, puts the object back, and gets back to work.
INT. GRADY HOME
While doing Kendall’s laundry, Nora finds the kaleidoscope and Jack says it was from the estate sale. Nora assumes Kendall stole the kaleidoscope, but Kendall insists she didn’t. It must have… fallen into her bag? The family have an argument over Kendall being untrustworthy.
INT. KENDALL’S BEDROOM
Kendall lays on her bed and puts the kaleidoscope to her eye. Suddenly, a disturbing pattern emerges through the eyepiece; a needle is released from the kaleidoscope and it goes right through her eye – but Kendall then wakes up, realizing it was a nightmare.
INT. GRADY HOME – FOYER
At night, Kendall sees Austin outside, smiling at her creepily. He then slips toward the house, and Kendall hears noises downstairs. She runs downstairs, whispers for Austin. Sees something moving through one of the large cabinets on the bottom of the kitchen counter. She opens it, sees nothing. Nora comes downstairs, asks what’s going on. Kendall says she thinks someone is in the house. Nora wakes up Jack; they look around but don’t find anything.
ACT 2
INT. GRADY HOME – KITCHEN
The next morning, Nora cooks Kendall breakfast. Kendall slumps into her seat with a dead look in her eye. She doesn’t touch her food – just looks at Nora and grins. Everything Nora says, Kendall repeats it to her, backwards. Nora gets nervous, but Kendall snaps out of it the second Jack comes into the room.
INT – AUSTIN’S JOB
Kendall approaches Austin and tells him not to come to her house again. Austin doesn’t understand- says he was working last night. Kendall says he’s lying again, and a frustrated Austin grills her: says her facts about him aren’t adding up. Why would he lace her joint when he’s in love with her? He gave her a regular joint, because her parents were stressing her out.
There has to be another reason why she totally blacked out that day. Something happened with the baby that was so awful, Kendall must have blocked it out of her memory. That’s really what happened. Denial is a powerful thing. Kendall tells him to stop gaslighting her. She never wants to speak to him again.
INT – GRADY HOME
Nora is cleaning, telling Jack on the phone that something is wrong with Kendall. Suddenly, she hears something upstairs. She hears weird chewing noises coming from Kendall’s room. She bangs on the door; Kendall doesn’t answer. Suddenly, the chewing stops. Nora cracks open the door, and looks inside to see… Kendall floating in the air. Nora gasps, closes the door. Runs downstairs… to find Kendall downstairs, acting normal.
Nora tells Jack that something is wrong with Kendall. She’s acting… possessed or something. Jack tells Nora that she’s overreacting and that she needs to get out of the house. Her mind is playing tricks on her.
INT – KENDALL’S ROOM
Kendall looks at her reflection, notices her mirror has somehow grown… bigger? She looks at the kaleidoscope on her desk. She takes it and starts playing with it, looking at the colors. She takes it in the hallway to see the colors change into an otherworldly display. Then she hears something.
ANOTHER SCARY SCENE
After this, Kendall knows something is wrong and is keeping her eyes peeled to try to figure out what it is.
INT – THERAPIST’S OFFICE
Nora sits down with the therapist. Brings up Kendall’s strange behavior. The therapist tells her if he didn’t know any better, it sounds like Nora is saying Kendall was possessed. The therapist tells Nora there’s someone she should contact – someone better suited for this issue.
INT – GRADY HOME
Kendall realizes that there are MORE SMALL MIRRORS in the hallway, seemingly coming out of nowhere. She calls Jack and explains that something is in the house but she doesn’t know what. Jack shushes her, tells her she just has an overactive imagination. She’s always been so silly.
Kendall then tries to tell Nora, who acts scared toward her. Nora simply tries to calm Kendall down, which makes Kendall even more frustrated. Kendall goes into her room, and Nora answers the door to find – a PRIEST.
After Nora tells the Priest everything about the baby incident, the Priest tells Nora Kendall seems to have attracted an evil presence because of the unspeakable tragedy. It’s consuming her, and Nora must do whatever she can to stop it. Nora brings the Priest to Kendall’s room, where they find Kendall chewing on something under her bed. Kendall screeches like a banshee when the Priest puts holy water on her, and flees the room. Nora and the Priest look to see what’s under Kendall’s bed: a collection of BABY LIMBS. The Priest tells Nora that they need to take serious action.
Kendall, now seemingly normal, wakes up from a nap on the downstairs couch. As she goes upstairs… something starts to chase her through the house. It’s unclear what it is. She then turns into a corner and accidentally breaks a mirror. She then turns around to see… the Priest. But it’s not really a priest … It’s dressed as a priest but has a DEMONIC FACE WITH NO EYES.
Kendall screams, and runs out of the house.
Nora calls Jack, but he’s still at work. The Priest tells Nora that they don’t have time to waste; they need to take care of this now.
INT – JACK’S OFFICE
Kendall runs to her dad’s office. Finds out through his assistant that… he hasn’t been in the office in three days. WTF?
INT – GRADY HOME, BOILER ROOM
Jack gets a call from Nora in his “office.” He takes it; when he hangs up, we see he’s actually in the boiler room, without the faintest realization that’s where he actually is.
INT – AUSTIN’S HOME/PLACE OF WORK?
Kendall finds Austin. She makes sure that Austin really was at work on the dates he said he was (and not at her house). Once it checks out, she says something really weird is going on in her house. Austin helps her figure it out, and realize it all dates back to that kaleidoscope going into her house.
INT – GRADY HOUSE
The Priest returns from the basement, and tells Nora that her daughter is even more dangerous than they thought. The Priest believes she… somehow kept the baby alive, and is guarding it. Nora follows the priest downstairs, where Kendall is tied up, ready to be “exorcized”.
INT – JACK’S OFFICE
Kendall looks up the family from the estate sale, the last owners of the kaleidoscope. Austin cross references the family on social media, somehow connects them to a previous owner who managed to escape from the kaleidoscope. Kendall tells him to drive to the woman.
INT – GRADY HOME
The Priest and Nora confront the possessed Kendal. During the “exorcism”, Kendall gets loose and kills the priest, then brushes past Nora and runs away. Nora follows Kendall through the house.
EXT – WOMAN”S HOME
Kendall and Austin talk to the woman. She says that the kaleidoscope destroyed her family. She threw it in the dump. But she isn’t surprised that it found its way back to people.
The woman explains that the kaleidoscope makes you see things that aren’t there. Kaleidoscopes work by mirrors. So the kaleidoscope puts up mirrors in the house, and breaks the family members apart, locking them into their own nightmares.
The only way to get out is to get out of the house, and not go back. Eventually, the kaleidoscope will weaken and whatever entity lives inside it, will go to sleep. But once it’s woken up, it will do whatever it takes to lure its victims into its realm.
INT – GRADY HOME
Nora follows “Kendall” through the home, until she finds a GIGANTIC MIRROR DOOR that has somehow popped up in the threshold of the next room. Nora peaks her head inside, then starts to go back… until she hears the soft cries of the baby.
INT- BOILER ROOM
Jack continues to do his work. He hears his secretary tell him that his wife and daughter are here, and have planned a surprise party for him! He walks out of the “office” to enter the “kitchen,” with Kendall and Nora smiling at him creepily. They tell him to sit down for dinner.
They also take him through the mirror doors, where they reveal that they are made of plastic. They are life-size dolls that are always smiling. Jack smiles back at them, satisfied that everything is finally all right in the house.
INT – AUSTIN’S CAR
Austin tells Kendall that there’s no way any of this is real. Kendall tells him to come back to their house and see for himself.
EXT – GRADY HOME
When Kendall and Austin go inside, they don’t see anything. No parents. Nothing. Kendall realizes that she has to enter the house alone; the kaleidoscope doesn’t want Austin.
Kendall tells Austin to get help, and goes back into the house by herself. When she does, Austin immediately opens the door after her – but she isn’t there.
INT – GRADY HOME
Kendall travels through a mirror maze full of horrors; the shifting object, the demonic priest, deformed plastic people. Eventually, she stumbles upon a scene through the mirror. She rewatches the events of what happened that day: she was watching the baby when she smoked a joint, then passed out. While she slept the baby choked to death on a plastic toy airplane.
Kendall is frustrated. But she finally is ready to watch the scene again with objectivity. She realizes that she only smoked in her room out the window, which means she wasn’t watching the baby at the time. “Wait a minute… this couldn’t have happened.”
She realizes that that scene is being played out on a MIRROR. Angrily, she smashes the mirror, which cracks and reveals the actual scene: Nora falling asleep on the couch, then waking up to find the dead baby. Then… snapping.
INT – NORA’S MIRROR MAZE
Nora approaches “Kendall”, who is holding the baby. She takes the baby from Kendall, and says she thought she lost him! She’s so overcome with emotion.
INT – KENDALL’S MIRROR MAZE
Kendall watches Nora, in the memory, then storm into Kendall’s room and see her sleeping. Nora then shouts at Kendall, telling her she was supposed to be watching the baby!
Kendall realizes what happened: her mother slipped into denial, unable to face it was really her fault. Just then, the DEMON emerges: its arms are wrapped around its torso and face, covering its eyes. It has a wide mouth, laughing like a hyena. It chases Kendall out of the memory.
Goes through the maze and smashes another mirror, making her way into…
JACK’S MIRROR MAZE
Kendall bursts into the kitchen, where Jack is laughing with plastic Kendall and Nora. She convinces him that it’s not real, and he follows her to find Nora.
They smash more mirrors and stumble upon…
NORA’S MIRROR MAZE
Nora is cradling her baby in her hand. Kendall tries to tell her mother that this isn’t real: the baby is dead and… Nora was the one who was responsible for it. It’s unspeakably tragic but Nora has to face reality and wake up from this.
Nora doesn’t listen… then, the demon emerges.
Jack drags Kendall back, protecting her from the demon. The demon walks up to Nora and uncovers its eyes. Its eyes are kaleidoscopic. Nora’s face then becomes kaleidoscopic, and the demon devours her.
INT – MIRROR MAZE
Jack and Kendall run out of the maze, but the demon follows them. It almost catches them, but Kendall takes a mirror shard and stabs the demon. She then redirects the mirrors with Jack so that the demon is trapped, and scared of itself. This buys the duo enough time to leave the maze and escape from the house.
INT – GRADY HOME
Kendall and Jack leave their house, and go back into reality. They never enter the house again.
DEDUMONT
The kaleidoscope finds its way to an estate sale…

I learned it’s good to plot the whole story out no matter how rough to get the situations set up
EXT. TOMKINS FARM – DAY
ELLIE, RAJ, and SON stare at the farm they were sent to inspect. Racist signs out front. On the porch of the farmhouse Jonah a ornery looking man wields a shotgun.
Raj is unmoved and goes to the gate while Ellie gets back in the car. Son calls the office for help but gets no signal. He sends a text.
Raj yells to Jonah to let them in. Jonah takes a shot near Raj. Kills a gopher. Laughs.
Raj says they have orders to inspect their farm.
Jonah says they have nothing to hide so he lets them in.
Ellie is coaxed out of the car.
They’re let in the farm and the gate clanks shut behind them.
Ellie tries to get out but the gate is locked.
EXT: IN THE FARM GROUNDS – DAY
MIDGE (8) is pulled roughly into the house by GRANNY (65) as the inspectors approach the farmhouse.
The inspectors tell Jonah the chickens they’ve been selling have been flagged. There are some abnormalities.
Jonah takes them to the barn.
They go inside and Jonah slams the door shut and locks them in the barn.
INT: BARN – DAY
They try and get out but there’s no escape. Raj tries kicking the door open but it’s no use. Son tries to call the police again but still has no signal.
Ellie sees a dead animal carcass hanging on a meathook. She screams.
After calming her down Son sees a storm door and thinks it may be the way out. It’s got a lock on it. He figures out the way to break the lock Then he climbs down into the cellar.
Raj and Ellie wait to see. There is silence. They call down. Nothing. Maybe he got out.
Suddenly Son shouts in fear. Help me!
Raj grabs a shovel and goes down the cellar. He rushes back up fear on his face. He slams the door shut and locks it.
It was horrible. I couldn’t rescue Son. He’s gone.
Ellie sobs.
INT: BARN – LATER
The barn door opens and Kate slips in.
Sorry Jonah locked you in here.
They tell her Son has been killed in the cellar. She says no. Don’t worry. He’s not dead. I know what’s going on.
She reveals that Granny has been experimenting with poultry. There are just weird birds down there.
She goes over and opens the door to the cellar.
Son’s detached head flies out. Kate gasps. Faints.
The monster is coming out.
They slam the door shut just in time.
They revive Kate and they run to the house as the door to the cellar strains.
INT: FARMHOUSE – DAY
The three of them get to the house. The place is a mess. Eli is drunk, Midge is playing with a makeshift doll. Kate tells them that there’s a monster in the barn. Granny says nonsense. That’s Henry. Ruth says you’ve still been experimenting haven’t you. Granny says shut your face. Turns out Granny has been cross breeding eggs with duck turkey and chicken sperm.
Suddenly the door burst open. Henry peeks his head in.
He’s glassy eyed and can barely keep his eyes open. Eli staggers over to him. You need a drink.
He staggers in and then we see the Turducken who claws Eli’s face and pecks him to death.
Jonah shoots at it. Blasts the chickens head off and it falls.
He thinks he’s killed it. But the chicken head regenerates.
Granny yells at the monster telling it to get back in the barn.
It comes at Granny but Jonah shoots it again.
The monster turns to Jonah. Grabs the gun from him and kills Jonah
Ellie grabs Midge and runs upstairs.
Raj, Ruth Kate and Granny follow them up. They all crowd in a bedroom as the monster climbs the stairs.
INT. UPSTAIRS BEDROOM – DAY
The monster breaks in. Raj fights with it as the others go out the window.
The monster slashes Raj.
Ruth blares loud music and the monster stops.
Monster runs off to the barn.
INT: DOWNSTAIRS – LATER
The remaining people regroup. Raj is wounded badly.
We need to get him help.
They keep the music blaring to keep the Turducken at bay.
The power is cut off and the music stops. It goes dark.
They hide in the dark.
EXT. OUTSIDE – LATER
The monster is out there. They can hear it.
Ruth goes out on the roof thinking it’s safe. The turducken flutters up and kills her.
Crams her body parts in the chimney and drops them into the house.
The turducken is on the roof.
Granny explains what the turducken is. The only way to kill it is to separate all three heads at once. The only way is to get the turducken to hang upside down. They will fall asleep and we can cut off the heads.
There’s a contraption in the barn. A rack. If we get the turducken on the rack we can turn it upside down
Kate tries to reason with it while Ellie and Midge run for the barn.
INT: BARN – DAY
Ellie gets Midge to hide in the storm cellar. Wait here and don’t come out until someone comes to get you.
INT: FARMHOUSE –
The turducken breaks into the house. Granny throws a lantern at it and the house goes up in flames. They run out leaving Raj to burn.
The turducken chases Granny and Kate to the barn.
The monster kills Granny.
INT: BARN – DAY
Kate gets safely in the barn. The turducken approaches.
He comes in. Has Ellie and Kate penned it. It looks like a certain death when Raj appears out of nowhere and shoots the turducken.
The turducken turns and kills Raj giving Kate and Ellie a chance to escape.
Ellie tries to send Kate into the cellar with Midge. But the monster is in the way.
They try a rope trap to hang the monster upside down.
It works for a moment until the rope breaks and the monster falls.
Ellie goes on the rack. The monster sinks his claws into her. Now! Kate turns the rack.
It turns the monster upside down. The heads fall asleep. Ellie pulls a knife out and slices off the three heads.
The monster falls to the ground.
