My name is Janis A. Pryor. I’ve written four screenplays. I’m hoping to get two things from this class, one, how to think more like a screenwriter and how tell a story for film or tape without taking years to do it!

I’ve had three books published by a small press with the fourth one due out in fall of this year. I’m hoping to adapt my first book for the screen and use this course as a springboard. I adapted a portion of my second book for the stage. It was performed by Equity actors on the east coast in Cambridge, MA roughly four years ago.

Hi. My name is JoAnne Edwards. I’ve written four+ screenplays. They all need to be rewritten. I’ve been attempting to turn a script I wrote 30 years ago into a Binge Worthy T.V. series. I’ve decided I need more deadlines, so signed up for this class. I can work either on this script or start a new one, and have it be a feature. The genre I tend to write in would be “Magical Realism.” I’ve been calling this present script “Abused Trance Medium” genre, but I realize I need to use industry standard genre terms. I like doing all the research. I just need the push to complete the scripts.

    Hi everyone! Happy 2023.

I’m Alex (she/her), Swiss American, based in Zurich. Excited to be back at the U after a 5 year hiatus in which I developed and produced other writer’s labours of love. I’ve written 5-7 specs, all chilling in a drawer.

‘Do You Matter’ will be my first script to enter Swiss Film Funding.

I‘m excited to get back into the groove of writing daily, laying down track first thing in the morning. I juggle a lot of other creative’s urgent needs, so making my own storytelling my most important part of my day will be a game changer.

Hal once told me in his brilliant succinct way: Your writing is always outside the box – but you need to stay within the… what was it… theme? Topic? Scope… hmmm, grrr… yeah… high functioning dyslexic at work here!

I taught my sister’s cat Gloria, a timid grey Scottish Fold rescue, to hiss and growl. But she only hisses and growls at me… when we are alone – no one else has ever heard her utter even remotely aggressive sounds… as happy as I am that I inspired her to own and grow her range of feline emotions (you go gurl!), I catch myself pondering: Does she genuinely hate me? Why did I do this to myself. Sob. Gotta love a good dilemma.

    Hi Everyone,

I’m Karena and I live in Spokane, WA. My original background was writing and producing skits and plays for churches and community theater. Since then, I’ve been optioned, but the funds fell through, written four screenplays with “recommends” and a short. I was fortunate to have a script make quarterfinalist in the Page Awards and The Nichol Fellowship.

This last year I was unable to write as life went sideways on too many levels, so I’m taking this class to spring back into the saddle.

Interesting thing I’ve done…A friend and I, without any idea what we were doing, created two English vocabulary card building games to learn Greek and Latin roots in a fun and easy way. The fun part… kids ask to play the games on their own:) Best to all of you and your projects!

      Hi Karena,
I have a friend who would like to know more about your Latin card game. Is there a link or can you message me info about it?
I’m in the middle of reading Babel by R.F. Kuang — it’s about translation and words creating magic. You might like it.

    Hey,

I’m Dominic Matich and I’ve written 7-8 scripts and a MSC5 Alumni. I have a lot of tools in my toolbox but writing scripts quickly is not one of them and I’m constantly looking to improve my strengths and weaknesses, so here I am. Something unique or strange about me…hmmm I’m a published author, I had a kidney transplant when I was 23, I was a rapper signed to a label when I was younger in Detroit, and I’ve been a boxer and boxing trainer for close to 20 years (and I’m only 36).

    3. To continue developing as a screenwriter and storyteller.

    4. I was on the SAG Awards nominating committee for Films this year. It was a amazing experience watching so many different types of movies. Not only different genres, but different budgets, subjects and desired emotional impacts. Favorite small budget film “Aftersun”.

    2. How many scripts you’ve written – about 7 decent ones, and loads of crappy ones. Additional two in draft form as of the posting of this comment.

    3. What you hope to get out of the class – I’m a terrible procrastinator with lots of ideas. I hope to learn some skills to get out of my own way and get those ideas out of my head & onto paper.

    4. Something unique, special, strange or unusual about you – I’ve lived all over the world, attended 18 schools, and have landed in Oxford, UK.

    Happy New Year Everyone!

I’m Roxanne Avery and I’ve written two scripts and am an alumni of the ProSeries and MSC13. I have a professional writing degree from the University of Oklahoma. I am currently writing three scripts; one with a WGA writer in LA, one with a SAG member and one that has been optioned but needs a re-write. What I hope to get out of in this class is the discipline to quickly re-write that script.

My full-time job as a criminal trial specialist/investigator for a criminal defense law firm in Houston keeps me busy and continuously gives me true crime stories that will be amazing screenplays or series for TV. I’m also writing three true crime books.

In February, I was featured in a 10-page story in the New York Times magazine about one of my cases, “How the Bikers Walked – The Infamous Motorcycle-Gang Shootout in Waco, Texas that resulted in Nine Deaths and 177 Arrests but No Convictions – A Tangled, Seven-Year Tale of Prosecutorial Hubris and Tenacious Defense.” I’ve been interviewed and assist with factual information about that case with three production companies for documentaries including VICE-TV and A&E.

Hi, my name is Jane Turville. I have written approximately 10 feature length scripts and several short narrative scripts.

I am also enrolled in the WIM class and really feeling great about the improvements I’m seeing in my writing. That said, I have a long way to go. I am always so inspired by hearing Hal’s supportive words and voice and that was the big draw for me to this class. I’m really looking forward to, on a weekly basis, connect with Hal and Cheryl. Their presence and input just makes me want to be a better writer!!

Something weird about me. Hmm? A rather long list. I love processing and spinning wool, from sheep to finished knitted project. And, I’m totally smitten with our 6 chickens.

Hey all, Kevin Ash here. I’ve written a dozen or so screenplays, more stage plays, had several optioned, a few writing assignments, and am trying to finally write a film that’s been brewing for a decade. I’ve taken many SU courses and am a Hal champion! I’m pretty sad about the Dolphins right now, even though it’s early in the game… so I’ll change the subject. I also teach film and theatre in a private school and am looking ahead to my retirement to Hawaii within the next 5 years… let’s sell this one and make it this year! 🙂

Oh yeah, I am on my 4th career. Started as an actor in NYC, member of SAG/AFTRA and AEA, became a director and designer in theatre, then an Artistic Director of 2 professional theaters and a film producer, and now teaching. Screenwriting and producing will be next.

    Good morning,

Hello, everyone. It ’tis awesome we will be in class together. My name is Sean Barrett. 50 years old/single/never been engaged let alone married/no children. I have loved film/tv and books my whole life. My favorite author is Stephen King! I have been gifted with an incredible imagination and the ability to communicate through words and pictures at a very high level. I am very excited to start this class! My mind works very quickly, so the opportunity to speed things up writing screenplays/ and possibly television has me stoked!! Nice to meet all of you in advance and I look forward to working with you all! ~ Sean

    — I still have yet to finish a script to my liking

    — I really want and need to move from ideas to concepts to high concepts to finishing a script through to the final draft and pitching it with success and absolute results such as optioned, produced and popping popcorn before I sit down with a room full of friends, family and complete strangers to watch the next potential winner of Best Original Screenplay! I know true happiness and fulfillment lies in finishing the process and smiling over a final draft I can be proud of and excited about pitching!

    — I was almost in the original Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) as one of the kids running after Rocky Balboa as he ran through the streets (Italian Market) to the Philadelphia Art Museum … but I got the flu! Dag nabbit!

    — I was top of my class in The United States Marine Corps in both Security Forces and Mortarman schools. I joined the Marines, because of Thomas Harris’s book, Red Dragon ~ I wanted to be an FBI profiler. Joining the Marines as a mortarman (Infantry) gave me a shot at being selected for Force Recon. I finished 2nd out of over 60 or more who took the initial testing (try out) while in infantry school. Unfortunately, there were no openings for Force Recon at the time. They did select me for Security Forces as a consolation.

Hi everyone, I am so happy to be a part of this course and to meet all of you.

My name is Wendy Lynne (last name is subject to change in 60 days) LOL.

I have written 5 screenplays and one T.V. series and I am terrified to put myself “out there” for others to read my work. I hope to get out of this class the motivation and to be held accountable for getting myself in a daily routine of writing and I think that this class will do just that. Motivation has an expiration date, but if it is turned into a routine that is when it helps.

Something unique about me is that I have a home residence in Texas, but I am working in Albuquerque as a surgical assistant just 20 minutes from the Netflix Studios and hope to get my foot in the door there.

Hi, My name is Mary J. Andrews. I’m the fourth director of the 30+ year old WRCG (Write Right Critique Group) in Lubbock, Texas USA.

I have a 5 book YA Science Fiction series which I would like to convert to a series for a streamer’s market. So far, I’ve been unable to briefly encapsulate the scope of the main series to market it. And, I’m not happy with the pilot yet, either. So I’m starting again with the prequel to the series (book 5). Surely vampires in space and the end of the world can do something, right? This will be my second attempt for a series pilot.

Sooner or later when I get the hang of converting my books to screen, I would like to be able to contribute to bringing other authors’ works to film, too.

Something strange…hmm…long time ago, I almost ran over Frank Herbert (author of the Dune series) in the parking lot of a local university on my way to his lecture. I hit my brake as he crossed in front of my car. He paused and stared at me before finally clearing my path to find a spot to park. After the lecture, when I was introduced to him, he definitely recognized me and told everyone about our parking lot adventure. I was pretty audacious back then, so after multiple apologies, I asked for an interview afterwards and he agreed. Life sure can be strange, huh?

    Hello everyone,

My name is Connie Whitmer. I have completed 1 script, but have taken just about all of Hal Classes, using the techniques to write a Book Series worthy of TV Series. Would like to write the Pilot/ Episode 1 ~ 2hr, Script.

I once went on a 30 day Survival Trip, in the Southern Utah dessert. Nothing to eat but Yucca roots, lizards and snakes (very chewy and tasteless, except for a really nasty aftertaste). If you are ever stranded, and need someone to start a fire rubbing two sticks together, chip an arrow head, attach it with sinew (you find a maggot infested deer skeleton, dry the leg cartilage, beat it with a rock, then chew it for about a half an hour, until it is the consistency of masticated slug, then wrap it around the arrowhead and let it dry . . . I’m your guide!

Hi Mary. I don’t know if you are asking me? I have seen it done, with TV Series. 2 hours, Episode 1 and 2 together. I can’t remember which ones. Cheryl or Hal will probably know. Basically, it is the first two Episodes. I’m doing this class, this way because a regular Script is 2 hours. But the Episode – 1, 1hr, climax will be in the Mid-Point, of my 2 hr Script for this class. If the Series ever gets made, it will probably be divided. Hal has a great Binge Worthy TV Series Class which I sighed up for but didn’t get a chance to follow through – will be using those techniques, as well, for this class. Hal’s Classes are great because you can save them and use them when you do have time. I have taken 13 and used all his techniques for my Book Series.

Hi everyone, I’m Rita Doyle Roberts.
I’ve written 4 scripts, 2 of which are for animation. One of those was created with a children’s picture book to go with it.

My main goals for this class are to redirect my focus and enthusiasm back to writing while also connecting with all of you. Plus, I want to take my recent, unplanned experience and turn it into a great story.

Unusual thing/unplanned experience — 3 1/2 years ago my partner died so I took over his commercial painting business which means I’ve been hanging around on construction sites since 2019.
    (a) I do NOT belong on any construction site.
    (b) I jumped in blind just to keep the crews employed for a little while (she said, now almost 4 years later)
    (c) The only thing missing from this comedy of errors is a laugh track.
    (d) It’s become glaringly apparent that nearly everyone underestimates themselves.

I’ve always enjoyed a good challenge but I’m pretty sure I can do anything now. If I can get a national construction company to trust me with finishing their massive new building… we can all convince a producer to option our scripts.

    Greetings!

    1. Name?

    Patty Jan Ruland

    2. How many scripts you’ve written?

    3–one finished

    3. What you hope to get out of the class?

I have a producer rooting for a holiday script concept, so I am hoping to get this one done in short order, then go out for coverage, then submit to different companies.

    4. Something unique, special, strange or unusual about you?

People think I am emotional (too), but a counselor once told me I am more analytical than emotional.

      Hi Patty,
People have told me the same thing but after spending time on multiple constructions sites, usually as the only female, I’ve found that I am always the LEAST emotional, most rational person there. Constructions workers get their feelings hurt very easily, as it turns out. LOL
So, yeah, your counselor probably got it right.
      Nice to meet you!

Hello again, everyone! I’m Bonnie. I’ve written at least 12 scripts, probably more, I’d have to go and count. I hope to get energized to write a brand new script as quickly as possible. I’m a painter, a Therapeutic Eurythmist, a prolific dreamer and “Teacher of Conscious Dreaming”. I’ve been learning and practicing lucid dreaming, precognition, shamanism from courses on the Shift Network. I just finished a class on story for animation with PIXAR writers and animators, and creating short little videos, all online for the past 3 years during the pandemic. I’ve had 2 scripts optioned, BECOMING PICASSO and FUNERAL FAKERS, both of which I wrote in the SU Master Class. Good to see so many of you from our previous classes with Hal and Cheryl! I hope you’re staying well. I look forward to exchanging constructive and empowering conversations with you. Ciao for now!

If I remember correctly, you let me read BECOMING PICASSO a few years ago. Great concept and script!
I have a first draft script called DREAMTIME about using dreams to inform our waking life.
Along with painting and animation, we have a few things in common. Good to see you again 🙂

    Hi Screenplay Writers,

My name is Lisa Long, and I joined this class because Hal and Cheryl were going on Live Video in it, and I wanted to get back in the flow with them.

I have taken other courses at SU and in their Toastmasters group, and I prefer more interactive learning as I am more of a visual person.

I have been writing to bring my understanding of how the Universe works out to the world in a more significant way. So my motivation is not to “be a writer.”

Instead, it is to share multidimensional concepts in whatever way I can that help people as they wake up because it can sometimes be a terrifying and confusing process.

I was one of the first full-time professional psychics on the internet in 1995 (after an Angelic visit), doing sessions remotely for people worldwide, including doctors, lawyers, actors, people in the White House, Air Force 2, the Police, and the FBI. I still do private sessions now and offer classes in my Academy.

I have written several huge drafts and a few treatments. They all need work. But for this, I am starting new, as Hal suggested.

I plan on finishing a rough draft with great beats of a very creative screenplay in this class in 30 days.

I am in Longmont, Colorado, now. I love living in different places.

Merry meet, Lisa! Very exciting and interesting…I had a few psychic experiences when I was young in the form of wide-awake dreams or visions, two of which were in Los Angeles, CA. One while playing an open mic at a bar near Hollywood…I believe it was on Melrose. Vision ended up being the fire at the Great White concert. The other was while I was driving on 5 lane highway, maybe I – 5 or 105? Nevertheless, it turned out to be 9/11!

Awesome to meet you! The best of success to you, truly!

        Hi Sean,

It sounds like you were tuned into the Group Mind Field of humanity. When Diana died, I was at the Maui Writers Conference and had to sit down as this huge wave of sorrow hit me. I tried not to throw up sitting in an empty conference room. I told my partner there was a massive disturbance in the field. Fifteen minutes later, someone came into the room and said it had just come across the news that she had passed. We are all connected.

Tita Anntares, signing in from the Upper Westside, NYC.

##: I’ve written three full length scripts in last 7 years, each winning one or more contests and placing well in others, none produced so far. Also several short ones.

UNIQUE, I think, for this group: I’m writing stage plays. SU’s ProSeries 50 and Master Screenwriting Class 4 changed my life and art because I would write the same scene for assignments as film script and stage play… and when I returned to a playwriting class for stage plays, the playwright leading it and other participants kept saying how much better my writing was – dynamic, active, almost no exposition, etc .

GOAL, for the 30 days: I’m returning (also returned for specialized SU courses in past, e.g. Comedy, Profound) to stop letting day-jobs and insecurities bog me down and instead start writing the three stories that have been circling my mind yearning to be freed to become typed words… or maybe a new story.

I’ve written a few features and pilots, but not happy with them, started a couple of solid stories in the Binge Worthy for TV class, but alas did not finish them. I hope to be able to get a dozen scripts written this year, even if it’s only the first or second version of them. All of me is unique, special, strange and unusual, but one this I’ll share for now is that my husband and I are starting a car dealership, and there are about 17 cars sitting in the driveway, ranging from Bentleys to convertibles to Rams… hard to choose which car to drive every day!

I have been working with ScreenwritingU on and off for quite some time, and owe Hal and Cheryl an enormous debt of gratitude for everything I’ve learned and am still learning. As a former playwright (with a play, WILLING, on Off Broadway, I came to screenwriting with much to learn. I’m working on several screenplays, including LOVE AND HOMICIDE, MATADORA!, THE THIRD MOTHER, THE SIGN OF A FREE MAN and JERUSALEM ROAD. Two producers have recenlty expressed interest in JERUSALEM ROAD; we are looking for another producer/director with an interest in the Israeli Palestinian conflict to round out the team. If you know of someone who could lead me to someone, I’m all ears!!!!! I’m really looking forward to learning How To Write A Screenplay In 30 Days. It takes me forever to complete one!

    Hi Everyone!

My name is Cindi Delinsky, and I’ve written 5 scripts plus several outlines for others. I started taking classes at SU nearly ten years ago, but I haven’t been writing for the last few years because of caring for a family member with late-stage Alzheimer’s. I seem to have lost my ability to focus, but every now and then, I’ll listen to one of Hal’s calls and feel inspired to get back into writing. I fear I’ve forgotten everything I learned, but that is probably not true. The last few years of not writing do not feel like a loss because I feel like I’ve gained tremendous depth on a personal level that has the potential to appear in my writing. I love the idea of the 30-day screenplay because in the past I’ve spent years working on one script, only to feel it still is not done. I hope to feel empowered as a screenwriter through this course. This fact may not be unique, but this is actually the second time I’ve purchased this class because I did not complete it the first time, and I like the addition of the Zoom calls!

Hello all, my name is Susan, finally back in Virginia Beach, VA, where I hope to stay planted for a spell. I have completed four scripts, the first one landing straight in the garbage can. The remaining three never achieving a final draft status. I have taken several courses with SWU and loved them all; however, I don’t think I ever completed any of them. I suspect that if I complete a course, I should have a worthy screenplay and then I would have to start the real work and fear running into that wall of rejection! All that is about to change.

After walking away from writing for the past three years due to life, and death, the pandemic, and moving every year with my job, I am ready to climb back onto this horse and cross the finish line. Thanks, Hal, for that awesome speech this week. I am feeling empowered to take on the next 30 days and am actively creating 20 high concept ideas to choose from. I look forward to working with all of you here and have a few quick shout outs:

Bonnie and Lisa, I too have a rough draft of an animated script and would love to get a few pointers from you to get it back on track.

Lisa, I am intrigued by your psychic abilities, and if you are offering your services, please reach out.

Cindi, my heart breaks for what you are going through. My mother passed last spring after battling multiple health issues that ended with her in a nursing home. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

And Sean, I love your upbeat positive attitude, with always have a kind word for everyone here; however, I want to thank you for your service and look forward to working with you over the next 30 days.

Oh yeah, the most unique thing I’ve ever done was skydiving and bungee jumping. There is nothing like a natural high reached by an adrenaline rush!

Engaged in American sovereignty since 1989, currently preparing a podcast and symposium to expose those areas to the world, showcasing the leaders and their current achievements.

Created my own field of study into advanced social systems, mostly in the arenas of civilizations of antiquity and temple sciences.

My name is Jonathan Terra. I’ve written three scripts, all pilots for a TV series which changed radically from the original concept, and the second as well. The third version is in still the works.

I hope to learn the art of writing quickly. Scripts dragging on seems to be the single biggest problem I’ve come across, so I’m keen to address it constructively and find effective solutions. I also hope to be able to figure out more quickly whether a concept is more suitable for a film, a limited series, or an open-ended series. This is more difficult than most people realize, and industry observers seem to oscillate between whether the time is ripe to do a feature film (which seems to be the latest view) or a series (many people are claiming the time has past for selling a TV series without serious obstacles, since the big streamers — esp. Netflix — have over-invested in TV series and are now dialing back; I’m not sure what the actual trend is now, since Apple TV and Amazon still have huge budgets to invest in limited and longer series; any insights here are welcome).

I’ve worked as a professor of political science, diplomat, political advisor & consultant, opinion analyst/writer for newspapers & politics websites, and documentary film producer (one full-length independent film was shown on TV and in festivals in multiple countries, while 18 shorter ones funded by the US State Department were broadcast in Afghanistan in 2011-12), among other things. I’ve spent most of the last 25 years living in Central Europe, although I lived in Afghanistan for a couple of years as well a little over a decade ago (where I did much more than produce documentary films, but that’s another story), before things went tragically sideways there.

If anyone has any advice for how to crack the code for getting your emails and support tickets responded to by SU staff, or communicating some other way which elicits a response, please advise… Thx!

Hi everyone, my name is Margaret Gendreau. I’ve written 7 screenplays and 4 pilots. My first pilot was written in the first Bingeworthy TV class. Two years and a rewrite later, during MSC17, it was optioned almost immediately after going out to market, which terrified me – could I do it again and in less than 24 months? After writing an additional three episodes and two pilots on assignment for producers I can say, yes, I can do it again but now the question is – can I write the same quality quickly?

My goal in 2023 is to write 3 (rewrite Gig Economy) new pilots with series bibles and take them out to market. Also, with three projects in development, I’m looking forward to one making it into production.

Not sure if it’s interesting but like my character in Gig Economy, I pursue real estate daily for no particular reason.

    Great luck with your projects!

Something strange? I’m MMA training right now for no reason at all. I permanently have the equivalent of dog zoomies (like when they randomly race around the room), but they’re human zoomies. So, I do A LOT of physical activities in between writing and acting to get them out.
